(1) It's just so unbelievable it is cringe-worthy. There is a covert military unit that only the CIA director, the President, and two others know about – one of which is the Middle-man / handler who selects all their missions. Discretion is key, and they even lie to their family about what they do – claiming they have all retired from the military. And yet, the analyst who runs a background on the property doesn’t realize it is owned by a person living her own double life until hours after the mission failed because of that person? And then when that person (Eva) has to be kept safe because now she is a target, Luke just blabs (within hours of meeting her, and then again later within days/weeks) by giving her all sorts of information about himself, his mission, the team, the target, etc. There is a way to give someone enough information to keep them safe without violating all sorts of rules. And so she needed to be kept safe… and Luke’s cover is a security company. So why couldn’t he hire the real ex-Seals to put this woman on lock-down while he salvaged the mission? Oh, because he fell in love with her and wanted to keep her next to him so he could keep screwing her after every near death experience? Right…
(2) And if you can get past the cringes, then you have an issue with just common sense logic! Are you kidding me?
(3) It was so predictable! I know this is a series, and so typically in the first book you allow the readers to meet the “team” so you know where the rest of the books will be headed. But this book just crammed that possibility down the reader’s throat, especially when Luke is telling Eva he wants her to get along with his military family so she is never alone, and she responds: “I have you. And Jessica. And the guys. And hey, maybe they’ll even get a chance to fall for someone now, so then there will be more women in the group.” But wait, it get’s better… because after a second near death experience, as Eva and Luke are about to have sex, “Her eyes flashes closed as a glimpse of the future caught her mind – of her in a pale blue dress with a baby bump.” That's right, as she is laying there in anticipation of sex, having just survived an ordeal, knowing he won’t be using a condom and she is anticipating having the child of a man she has known for less than a month. Que the inevitable fight, break-up, moping, eventual getting back together and then within the epilogue, bam! they announce she is pregnant. Really? You don’t say…
(4) Did anyone edit this book? While I didn’t catch glaring typos, there was just too many pieces that should have been cleaner. For example, Eva is working on set in Virginia, and is renting a place on the beach. Virginia is on the east coast of the United States, which enjoys beautiful sunrises. So when Luke takes Eva down to the water while he is trying to declare his love, the sun is not going to be “slipping from the sky, casting a sheet of orange light across the surface of the water.”
"How long will we be holed up together?"
"Hopefully, only a few days. I'm not looking forward to this."
"Yeah, me either, Captain Commando."
"If you did your research, you'd know SEALs don't like that term."
She lifted a brow. "What makes you think I don't know that?" --Eva & Luke

❤ Happy reading, and until the next reading.
