The Villain #3

The Butterfly

Rate this book
The Butterfly is a standalone sequel to The Villain Duology, a Dark Regency Erotic Romance series.

Propriety forbade them…
From the moment Niall Gibbs lays eyes on Lady Olivia Goodall he is entranced. Even as a young boy her fragile beauty calls to something deep inside him, making it difficult to stay away from her. And stay away, he should, since she happens to be the daughter of his master: an earl who would not take kindly to the attentions of a stable groom. Yet, as they grow to adulthood, Olivia and Niall’s visceral connection becomes undeniable. The two skirt danger and shun propriety for any stolen moments they can find, even knowing their love can ever be.
Tragedy ruined them…
When Olivia goes off to London for her first Season, Niall doesn’t think to ever see her again. However, she returns a year later, ruined with a newborn babe in her arms, and a mind riddled by torment. Following a brutal assault and months spent languishing in an unwed mothers’ asylum, she finds herself plunged into an existence of pain, darkness, and regret. Niall would give anything to bring her back into the light, including descend into the darkness along with her.
Love will save them …
As Olivia tries to fight her way back, it seems as if they might stand a chance after all. But Niall can never forget the difference in their stations, while Olivia still wrestles with the ghosts of her past. Can they overcome it all to find the happiness that has eluded them for so long?

Victoria Vale writes erotic romance that refuses to stay in its lane. She hops between history and suspense, blending danger with desire until the edges blur. Her stories are marked by bold heroines, irresistible heroes, and heat that never behaves the way it should. Love Me Darkly (2025) proves passion is always at its best when it misbehaves.

EDITED: DNF

why did ppl like this book
i mean whyy
what could i not see that so many other people saw!!??

hero:
spends his life fucking every pair of open legs he can find
whilst fantasising about the h the entire time (bc he’s just a commoner nobody who doesn’t deserve the highborn noble lady)
doesn’t respect the ow he fucks at all
but ofc has a problem with the h when he finds out she kissed a few other men while away
talk about being a hypocrite

the hero fucks multiple ow while fantasising them to be the h and the h even catches him with one of the ow
then ofc he runs after her and somehow they end up kissing (he was fucking ow just 5 secs ago ma’am what is wrong with you)
one thing lead to another and now their current situation:
before her first season, the H and h screw around a little in the summers she used to come home while still preserving her maidenhood for her husband ughh
whether the H was fucking ow or not during the times h was away was unclear

but what i found un-fucking-forgivable was that
while the “love of his life” was going through hell after being raped and mistreated so damn horribly and having forced to go through an entire pregnancy all alone

this guy was still fucking other women
i mean what?? while simultaneously taking care of the h and being like “i love you sm”, “ i’ll always be there” blah blah blah

while the girl you love has had her entire life destroyed, too traumatised to even be touched, you go around fucking other women bc you’re a man who has needs!??

and when asked by the h if he had still had sex with ow while he was with her his reply was:
“they were simply vessels for my pleasure, the one i’ve really ever wanted was you…”

VESSELS FOR MY PLEASURE
bitch what????

maybe i have too high morals or shit but if the person you’ve loved your ENTIRE LIFE gets raped and abused and you go around fucking other people while BEING WITH them, then you’re the shittiest person ever
in my book thats cheating idgaf if they were “officially” together or not

Safety
NOT SAFE AT ALL
H biggest manwhore ever
h virgin obvi
rape
5 years healing process for the h
H by her side though spends the 5 years STILL fucking ow
lots and lots of ow drama, the h even catches H fucking ow
h hears lots and lots of rumours about the H’s sex life at various points in the book
barely any om drama the h kissed maybe 2 or 3 while she was away from home

I really enjoyed this read! It was a fun add-on to the Duology to flush out Niall and Livvie's story! It is a story of healing and finding love, and thought it was well done in that regard!

This is not an easy read.....

But if you read athe Villian Duology, then you already know. I highly recommend that before delving into this book. Which is why I’m really not going to write a review.

I will say this. The love story was sweet, but I was always ready for the bad times. It was told in back and forth years. Present to past which always gets me flustered but I followed along ok. It also runs parralel to the Duology books while in the present years which is why I say read that first.

The epilogue makes the book for me.

2. Maybe 3. Unpopular opinion, it’s not the book, it’s me, it was too slow, I couldn’t get used to the back and forth in time, I skipped a lot of the looking back at young puppy love growing stronger and despite rape, trauma and madness, I found the romance too sweet, the hero too devoted, the heroine too good AND to top it, there’s a fairy tale ending.

Just not my cup, but the writing is very good, I actually felt like I was in the heroine’s mad head, seeing her demons and feeling her pain. And I loved to read about Adam and Daphne, the couple from book 1 (which I liked, now I have to reread it).

This book in the series is different than the first 2 as it addresses the crime of rape and the mental health issues that can follow. I found it a difficult read for me due the times and news of the day in real life so perhaps it would have been better to put it off till later.

How does she do this!! I can't even begin to convey how much I love Niall & Livvie's story. His love for her flies off the page from the beginning. My heart breaks for the pain Niall suffers at the hands of his father but his best friend Adam is there to save him. I love that Adam and Olivia (Livvie) were there to help Niall after the episode at the swimming pond. When Olivia re-tells her story with Bertram I was crying. She went through so much pain. I hate that she had to suffer but once she was rescued Niall and Adam never left her side. I love that he had that special nickname for her and when they were together he always told her she had all the control. I love when Niall when to talk to his father one more time he ended up saving someone he did not know about. Victoria gives us readers a story that has family love, strong characters, heartbreak and LOVE! The ending made me cry happy tears and I cannot wait for the next story!

The Butterfly is an interesting blend of pure repetitive tedium from the previous book in the series with some true brilliance addressing sexual assault and the aftermath

Saint, plain and simple, Niall is a saint and you would be so lucky to have such a man on your side. Compassion abounds in this story. The two scenes that stand out are when Livvie decides to play the harp the first time and when Livvie retells her story. This story overlaps with The Villian/The Dove and it was interesting to see a different side of what happened. The story of Niall and Livvie as young children to adulthood focuses on their friendship, compassion and love. A beautiful story.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

Another amazing adventure into the heart and mind of a strong heroine. At first I was afraid that the jumping back and forth from present time period day to past events was going to make the story hard to stay with but Victoria Vale is a master at her craft and made it work perfectly. Olivia is a stronger character than first believed in the first two books of the The Villan Duology. Her faith in love and the the strength she has within herself will leave you cheering! Niall is just an amazing character, strong as ever but tender when needed. You’ll learn more about his background as well which was an added plus! I couldn’t put the book down! This book was sent to me as an ARC for an honest review and this is my review.

I love all Ms Vale’s books. This was such a great story. The love between Olivia and
Niall was so strong it lasted thru years, hardships and secrets. There is a HEA.
Olivia and Niall were of different stations in life and would never be able to
have a life together. When Olivia was in London for her first season she was raped
And became pregnant. The father (and his family) of her child put her in a home for
unwed Women. Olivia was subjected to horrible treatment. When her brother Adam
was able to find her she was a broken woman. Read the rest of this great story for the
full journey that Olivia and Niall traveled to reach their HEA. You will not be disappointed.

I love the journey of Niall & Livvi. At first I wasn't impressed with the jumping back and forth in time but as I kept reading, I understood the importance of doing that. I strongly recommend reading the Villian & the Dove before this book but the Dove especially. The process of Niall helping Livvi overcome her fears with understanding and tenderness was an emotional journey. Plus the heated moments was definitely a Mistress Vale trademark. I have read several of her books and this one is a favorite. In the top 3 that I have read so far. To have a love that strong & lasting is a dream we all hope for. Thank you Mistress for sharing your amazing gift with us.

Wow!
Don't know why I thought I had read all the books on his series but I hadn't and I'm so happy that I found that out.
It was a glorious read with every sensation and emotion under the sun. Some really lifelike characters too and a story that is so powerful. Wow! Wow! Wow!

What can I say other than Ms. Vale has done it again.

The Butterfly is sweet and romantic and shows that nothing cannot be overcome with enough love and support.

Niall has loved Livvie forever. Since seeing her when she was about 6 and he was 11 he fell hopelessly under his spell. But she was the master's daughter and he was a stable hand.

Through a series of well positioned flashbacks we see how this unlikely duo meet and fall in love. We also see the obstacles placed in front of that love.

Then tragedy besets Livvie she is raped, impregnated and imprisoned and she loses her mind....or so we think.

Through love, understanding and sheer force of will, Livvie is able to overcome what happened to her to help others and bring the villain to justice for the benefit of all women.

In the end of course there are happy ever afters......helps when the man you love is best friends to your brother/guardian and he just found love himself.

Ms. Vale's writing brings you in and keeps you captivated with well developed characters and feasible plotlines.

She is one of my must read authors.

Olivia and Niall's slow-burn love story

Olivia and Niall’s book isn’t as dark as the previous two books in the “Villain” series. It’s a sweeter, more emotional slow burn that shows how the secret friendship and puppy love of two people on opposite sides of the English class divide grows into deep, true romantic love.

Parts of this book run parallel to events in the Villain duology, but they’re seen from different viewpoints, usually Niall’s or Olivia’s. Through Olivia’s eyes, you get some sweet, tender glimpses of her brother Adam’s true feelings for Daphne.

Not all of it works. The take on sex, abortion and rape as well as how men and women interact is too modern. At times, it feels like an awkward #MeToo lecture not a historical romance. It's out of place and pulled me out of the story.

Is it crazy to wonder if this decidedly-nicer, MeToo-compliant story is an atonement for the dubious consent, forced intimacy and unequal power in the very hot but very non-PC Villain books?

I read this as an ARC and holy hell Victoria Vale, you did it again. This book is the sequel to The Villain Duology, which consisted of The Villain and The Dove. The book centers around two characters I met in previous books, and yes, you definitely have to read The Duology first. Without the background of the other two books, you won't appreciate the story's point of view and you will be lost within the references of all that went before.

Niall, who began in the old Earl's employ as a stableboy (working for and with his father), and Olivia who was the step-daughter of the old Earl, and step-sister to the man referred to in the title of The Villain, the new Earl Of Hartmoor, have been in love nearly all of their lives, having been children together at Dunnotar. Olivia grows up loving Niall, but in Regency England, no permanent connection can be made - that just isn't done. Eventually circumstances in the form of the old earl interfere and off she goes to London for the first "season" and experiences a violent attack and horrible events following it (none of these events will be noted here because I'm not going to post one spoiler - this book was so different than the first two, I want you to read every single word without knowing what's going to happen - and if you've read the first two, then you already know what I'm referencing).

This book is the love story between Niall and Livvie. Plain and simple. It is not dark like the Duology was, it is filled with a story of love and faith and determination and forever. It is probably the sweetest love story Ms. Vale has ever written, bar none. I've loved her other books, but this was a masterpiece of enduring and forever love that she wrote from the heart. This follows the same time frame as the Duology but is written with Niall and Livvie's point of view. It is also very well written, it has a superb pacing to it, and at not one point in the entire book did I feel it was wanting in anything. The author gave us what we needed to complete Niall and Livvie's journey into love along with answering all of the questions we had when we finished reading The Dove.

The Butterfly brought back a time in my life where I read romances - didn't matter what era, didn't matter who wrote it - and loved being teary eyed when the Happily Ever After rolled around. I found myself in more than one place tearing up, not only for Livvie, but for Niall and Adam and Daphne, as well as the other women who have an important place in this book. I always cry at happy endings, but I cried for Livvie in places too. She withstood many horrors before finally coming back to Niall, but she comes out of the depths of hell to survive and to grow stronger, basking in Niall's love. And when you read the book, you'll find that is the absolute best ending for them. And one added note: BEST EPILOGUE EVER !!!!!!!

The book ends in a true happily ever after and when the pre-order is delivered to me, I'll read it again, because Victoria Vale just can't write fast enough to suit me. Special note to author: instead of basking in the glory, get writing, we're waiting for your next one. ;-) And thank you for writing this and all of the other books you've penned - this one was one of the most compelling and sweet romances I've read in a long, long time.

We first met Niall & Olivia in the Villain & The Dove & I'm thrilled they had their story & boy what a story it was! Enthralling, engrossing, heart wrenching & totally captivating. I could wax lyrical about this brilliant book but suffice to say read it & I'm sure you'll be as captivated as I was.

This is one of the best love stories I have read in a long time! Butterfly by Victoria Vale is book 3 in The Villain Duology series. Get the tissues out ladies for this one because you will need them. I hardly ever cry when reading a book but this one had me in tears. Nothing better than a good cry when reading a great story! It is very tragic yet beautiful at the same time. This story is about unconditional love which is why I loved it so much. Victoria has a true talent for writing and a very creative mind. Her characters, Olivia and Niall, come alive and you can’t help but fall in love with them both. This regency story is original, a bit steamy and even though it is in a series can be read as a standalone. It is not often that I get to read a true description of what that period of time deflects and I appreciate Victoria’s honesty and true telling of that time in history and what it was like. To put this simply, this book is amazing! This story has rape, vengeance, madness, caring, a loving brother, tragedy, loyalty, true friendships, kindness, nightmares, cruelty, evil, and unconditional love. I highly recommend this book, you won’t be disappointed!!

Every time I read Victoria Vale book I think it's the best - until the next release.
I recommend you read the Villain duology first so you'll have more clear picture about what is going on around Olivia and Niall. I received ARC from the author and couldn't be more excited to read it and, of course, it didn't disappoint.
The storyline is well made as always - you can have a little peek of Adam and Daphne's story too. It's hard not to fall in love with the characters (specially the males) in every book . Here we go with all the hardships Olivia has been through, also the blossoming of the love between the two. This jumping back and forth gives us the important moments and periods of Niall and Livvie's life as children and relationships - with family and with each order.
The unexpected twist at the end makes you fall in love with the heroes all over again (sorry no spoilers )
Great write from great author!

The Butterfly is Ms. Vale’s third book in the Villain Doulogy series, not including the Hart novella. I’ve read all of Ms. Vale’s regency books, but this is the first review I’ve written. Ms. Vale’s writings are very powerful, with intriguing plots and thoughtful and complex characters.

Lady Olivia Goodall was the loved stepsister of the original hero/villain in book one Lord Adam Callahan. Loving and impetuous, she is in love, but it wasn’t meant to be to the outside world. Tragedy showers the family and it will take her loving brother and the love of her life to bring her through it.

Niall Gibbs never though he deserved what he really wanted, Olivia. But love will have the last word and love will keep them together.

I absolutely love this series and I did not receive this book for free to review.

I loved Niall and Olivia's story. We meet them in the first two books so I was glad to get to read their story. In the beginning of the book we go back and forth from their present to the past. I normally am not of fan of the back and forth but it was not the whole book and we needed their backstory to understand their present. Niall and Olivia could never be together because she is a Lady and he is a servant. Olivia has suffered greatly in her life and Niall has been there the whole time helping her. It was a beautiful romance.

This was Olivia and Niall’s beautiful story. I loved these two from The Villain and The Dove. While Ms. Vale writes this book in a way that you don’t have to read the other two before, I highly recommend that you do. Livvie and Niall will just melt your heart. I love Niall. Like my husband should be jealous kind of love! We get to see how they met and are from two very different parts of society. Even with that and a terrible tragedy, love prevails. Livvie is a survivor and such a strong woman. I think this is my favorite book by Victoria Vale!

This covers the events that lead up to Adam and Daphne's story told in the Villain dueology (if you've not read I highly recommend you do) we get both Olivia's and Naill's recollections told in the past and present, of a young love that goes against all rules of society and not meant to be, of a traumatic time for Olivia and her struggle to overcome, of Naill's devotion as a boy that grows to a passionate and enduring love as a man, above all a its wonderful love story.
Did I enjoy their story I certainly did, I would definitely recommend and look forward to reading more of Virginia's work

While we caught a glimpse of Olivia and Niall in The Villian Duology, this is their book! We knew about Olivia because she was the reason for Adam's revenge. The Butterfly is about healing and recovery. To get to that point, we learn about Olivia and Niall's history from their childhood, adolescence, and Olivia preparing for her London Debut. And for Olivia to recover, we learn what happened to her in London.

I loved Niall and how he cherished Olivia. I loved finding out about their history. Olivia was an amazing heroine who overcame so much.

Victoria Vale wrote an amazing book!

I reviewed an ARC provided by the author. Thank you!

Another amazing book by Ms. Vale. This is the story that fans of the Villain Duology have been waiting for! We get the back story of Niall and Olivia and see what was happening behind the scenes with them during the duology. I love the representation of these two flawed characters and how they finally find their HEA. This book covers some sensitive subject matter, but I did not feel like it was as dark as some of Ms. Vale's other books. Overall, it is a wonderful read and I highly recommend it.

I was waiting so much to read Niall and Olivia story. I've read the first two books in the series and without a doubt this is another winner. It was good the flashbacks throughout the book to see where Niall and Olivia Love started and to understand their characters better. It was good to see Adam and Daphne pop in. This book is a keeper and bring on the next installment.

I did not think ms. Vale could top the villain and the dove. Was I ever wrong. Niall and olivia's love is so strong it leaps off the pages. The circumstances they have overcome to finally be together as they should have is astounding. Every girl needs a niall to be her hero. You will not be disappointed with this great read.
