The escape from Afghanistan was only the beginning. The Trio survived the initial fall, and built a refuge, they thought they had reached safety, but only to find themselves once again abandoned and surrounded by the primals. No contact with their families or commands, no relief from the rabid enemy. The fight continues as Brad and his men struggle to survive in a post-apocalyptic world where the enemy is far more dangerous than anything they had been trained for.
Over land sea and air they will do anything to reach home.
W. J. Lundy is a still serving Veteran of the U.S. Military with service in Afghanistan. He has over 12 years of combined service with the Army and Navy in Europe, the Balkans and Southwest Asia. W.J. is an avid athlete, writer, backpacker and shooting enthusiast. He currently resides with his wife and daughter in Central Michigan.
I developed the Whiskey Tango Foxtrot series from notes and ideas I had put together while deployed to Afghanistan. I had been jokingly asked how we would defend against a zombie attack.
I wanted to tell a story that portrays the military that I know, that displays our actual capabilities. These are my thoughts, I hope you enjoy them, and thank you for reading.
I will, however, start with my one gripe. Chelsea. We get a female character finally and that's what we get? Really? Please no. Just.... Avoid females. I'd love a strong, kick-ass female character, but if we can't have one let's stick to allll men. Ok? And if she's meant to 'hook up' with Brad... Please no. He deserves so much better than her.
Now to the important stuff. Brad, Sean and Brooks finally get a potential ride home only to find themselves neck deep in Primals in the middle of the ocean. And not just slow Primals, we have Alphas too.
We had seen the Alpha phenomenon in previous books, but in this one... Scary shit there. Monkeys may be able to hit buttons, but Primals should not.... That's just soooo wrong.
So the men find themselves on an oil platform 60 miles out in a category 3 storm. What should have been a safe haven, by the Murphy's Law of a zombie (or Primal) Apocalypse, is anything but.
The men, along with their pilots find 'safety' when they land then our 3 heroes work to clear the area. They find a massacre, 8 survivors and thousands of hungry and angry Primals sharing their current home.
This story finds them struggling to survive while they search for another way home after finding themselves abandoned by the people who sent them there. This leads them to some scary discoveries, some good ones and more information about the world and home.
One can get overwhelmed with military jargon in military bases books. From the first of these books that was one of my concerns, but I never have. There is just enough of it, clearly explained (at least for me) in a way that didn't make me feel talked down to.
I love the fact that these guys feel the pain and the exhaustion and even the burn out, but they never stop, they keep fighting. They support each other, they lean on each other, but they always hold their own at the same time. The fact that they are mentally scarred by what they have seen and done is just awesome.... In a writing way. It's makes it and then more real. They aren't machines, they are men. Them having realistic blow back from the physically/mental damage they have suffered just adds more texture to the story. I really feel and get the brotherhood of the military in these and I love every second of it.
By the end of this one they finally seem to be heading where they planned from the beginning, but in an Apocalypse don't get your hopes up... That Zombie Murphy's Law will bite you in the ass.
Like all the others make sure you have the next book ready, you'll be wanting the next chapter as soon as this one ends.
I have read the other two in this series. The first being a kind of intro or rather a short synopsis in my opinion of what the story is about. The second is getting to know the virus and the characters. It all unfolds really in this book. I cannot express to the reader how great this series is! I felt like I was reading World War Z and The Crazies and A bit of D.J. Molles mixed in. Such an excellent story! I am one that is not at all keen on too much military jargon, even being raised around all military branches in my family. I know all of it, just do not care to read stuff too over my head where I am not understanding, or it is taking away from the story. This book does NOT do that. The characters are great and relatable and the story is non stop action and flows excellent! Love the Primals take as it is a virus and they are not exactly "zombies"..As a Zombie fan before zombies were cool, I appreciated this and it was explained so well. I would definitely put this author and his series in my top 20 reads and look forward to the next installment!! Excellent JOB!!
However, I do take issue with the only female they have encountered in a month being whiny and emotional. One would assume that a woman who spends a great deal of her time mostly surrounded by men would be used to their various states of undress. Its like having brothers. I'm not saying she had to gawk at them or help them shed but, she didn't have to act like a prepubescent child either. Then after Brad spoke with her sharply her feelings got all hurt and she wouldn't even look at him. Is this how the author thinks women behave? Does he not think women are capable of being mature, professional and emotionally aloof? None of the men behaved in this manner. Most of them took everything in stride. I assure you most women are equally as capable of giving the same reaction.
Luckily, this wasn't a big part of the story so I didn't let it affect my 4 star rating. I just believe some women, especially those usually surrounded by men would have thicker skin. I do however, appreciate her being competent in her duties.
WJ Lundys third book in this military /horror serise is by far the best.If you like zombie lit and military fiction this serise is for you.Great characters and cinematic action pieces really draw you in.Lundy is a combat veteran so the action really hums. Want something fun and exciting to read? Grab this. Grab it before a primal grabs you!
The oil rig was about as safe as you'd guess in a horror series - reminded me of Monster Planet, though less depressing. Brad and co get out of there, and move along - trying to get home and (in Brad's case) get their men back in Afghanistan collected and linked back up with the military.
Not sure what to make of all of the new characters. Too many people feeding them crap between the last book and this one, and then there's Chelsea. Is she meant to be the romantic partner? Can't remember, but thought i had the impression Brad was married already, and the interactions between them feel more awkward than intriguing.
I'll keep reading for now since these are such short quick reads.
The characters and plot are fairly well developed. There's military jargon obviously but it's done in a way that people NOT ever in it can understand, like myself. The only issue I have with the book (all of his stories really) is that the writing can be a bit choppy. It's not that intrusive except for a few paragraphs here and there. Over all, a really good read that I'm definitely going to read the next.
The pace is non-stop, the action is awesome! One of the best series in the genre. This isn't my favorite book in the series, I'm not a big fan of the whole island set up (without giving anything away). I think that part is kind of boring. But I can't wait for the next book!
Another five star book by Lundy if you've read the other books in the series you know exactly what you're going to get, there ain't a lot I have to say,Nonstop Action from start to finish with a lot of good characters, the only thing different in this book is the zombies in this book are getting smarter and smarter, can't wait to see what happens in the next books
I have thoroughly enjoyed every book in this series, finding each hard to put down as I read about Brad and his journey while he tries to get home. And all of the different people he has met along the way. A great choice for anyone who enjoys military fiction, action adventure, post apocalyptic/dystopian tales and survival stories.
More well paced action from Lundy. This time they're aboard what should be a safe bet during the zombie apocalypse- an oil rig. There's also an island, ships, choppers, pirates, and an admiral. Or is he a despot?
I hoping the series will go somewhere. The characters seem interesting for the author has chosen not to elaborate on their back stories go into depth on the outbreak. I will try one more book to see if the series can get some traction.
I’m loving the twists and turns you put in the story. The military thriller aspect really keeps things moving along and balances out the zombie story. I’m eager to see how the main characters fare.
I'm really loving this series. Great character building and lots of action. The characters face new challenges and have to find ways to survive them. Highly recommended.
When the oil rig proves to be anything but a safe haven, Brad, Brooks and Sean find themselves again fighting for survival. With the help of a few survivors, they mount an escape plan to flee by boat. When they are met and taken to an island of survivors, all is not as it seems.
A fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants zombie adventure, entertaining and thrilling as Brad & friends stumble from one disaster to the next. I received this book in exchange for my honest review.
THIS SERIES JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER. 5 STARS ALL THE WAY.
Brad, Sean, Brooks & Chelsea and the rest of their friends are doing everything they can to get back home, to the United States. No matter what they hear about the U.S. being gone, they will do everything in their power to get there and see for themselves. But with more than the dead standing in their way, it seems they have their work cut out for them. W.J. Lundy has done an awesome job with this series, hooking you with the first book "Escaping The Dead" and he hasn't stopped since. Love how he brought together the different Military Services and shows that in the time of a major crises, they all come together as one family, brothers & sisters. This book and the whole series I definitely recommend to everyone. WJ. Lundy has written some really great books and after reading this book with the rest of the series, I really hope they check out his other stuff. You won't be disappointed.
I just want to start of by saying if it wasn't for some choppy writing in parts and grammatical errors, I would be giving this book 5 stars. I love everything about this book. Dystopian dictatorship within a Zombie Apocalypse, mixed with a splash of romance, loss and the natural drive of survival. I am also immensely interested in the idea the the 'primals' could possibly be capable of cognitive thinking. The point of view is also extremely unique, I have read my far share of 'zombie' novels and this is the first one I've read that originates overseas. To top it all off ..........……**(spoiler)**..................................
the book ends from the pov of a Canadian.

Our boys find a ride out of the mountains to a supposed safe oil platform on their way back to the States. The oil platform is anything but safe. A handful of survivors is found and the remaining 500+ crew is infected. Book three chronicles the taking back of the oil platform deck by deck. Then coming up with a plan to get off the platform and continue home. They still had the helicopter they arrived in along with a fast attack Palestinian boat moored off the platform still in operational order.
I did not enjoy this book as much as the first two, the dialogue wasn't great, and the characterization was such that I had trouble telling people apart. It's the third of five, often these seem to be "bridge" stories, set ups for the next sequence. The plane crash in Newfoundland was interesting, but didn't get into the oil rig set up. Plus the Naval base was a brief interlude, and the reason for leaving was flimsy. But see what you think.....
This one has followed the previous books in being a spectacular read. I never post spoilers and won't again this time. Mr Lundy has continued to deliver a stellar ability to draw the reader in and keep their attention throughout the entire novel. If you don't have the series, GET IT! it's just that good.
Only The Dead Live Forever(A Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Novel Vol 3)
The continuing saga of Brad and the gang against the primals (zombies). I liked this book even better than the others because of the scary anticipation. The primals are getting a little bit brighter and some survivors a little bit more creepy. I wish the crew good luck in the next book. I can't wait for book 4.
