قبل قراءة الكتاب تصورت إنه انتحر لإنه كان جنديا بالحرب وشهد فظائع. لكن بعد قراءة الكتاب تبين إنه لم يكن مجندا بالحرب قط. كان مراسل حربي للجرائد والمجلات (أي كان يذهب بمليء إرداته) وكان طواعية يحمل السلاح أحيانا وهو ما يخالف قواعد معاهدة جنيف بعدم حمل الصحافيين للسلاح أو المشاركة في القتال. وكان يستمتع بمشاهدة مصارعة الثيران بأسبانيا كل عام، وحتى كان يشارك ببعضها. وكان يذهب في رحلات سفاري لاصطياد وقتل الحيوانات. كان يهوى صيد الأسماك والقروش وإطلاق النار على القروش🤨. الصورة التي استشفتها من الكتاب عن شخص همنجواي إنه كان يستمتع بالعنف والقتل، وإنه ليس مسكينا شهد وارتكب أهوال الحرب جنديا مغصوبا، فأدى ذلك لانتحاره.

It’s not an in-depth view of Hemingway’s life but as someone who knew little about the famous author, I come away knowing more than I did and that is good enough for me. Feels almost like a tv show on the subject, going through his life key event to key event with the occasional quote to supplement. Overall not a bad book at all.

Short but solid

I’ve been reading Hemingway and about Hemingway since I was a teen. This short bio still had things to teach me. These Hourly History biographies are not to be disparaged. They are solid with helpful and essential information.

Great writer, tragic life

In college I read and studied Hemingway and his works. Along the way, his flawed character was disappointing but, to me, greatly influenced the characters in Hemingway's stories. This short but informative book reminded me of what I had previously learned about Hemingway's life, although nothing can duplicate the shock of learning he had taken his own life so violently. Maybe great writers discover great truths from their own flaws and reveal what they've learned regardless of who gets hurt in the process. Hemingway certainly hurt many people during his life journey.

I already knew the basic outline of Hemingway's life story so in that sense I didn't learn that much from this book.

A few things that did stand out to me:

(1) The degree of Hemingway's emotional volatility and potential mental illness. I knew he was an active, adventurous guy who liked bull fighting, wars, hunting and fishing and so on but it seems the man was genuinely mentally unstable, especially in his later years.

(2) The extent to which he constantly moved around and didn't live in one place for long. Not to mention the amount of hunting, fishing, sailing and so on he did. I knew he did that stuff but it's a lot more than I thought. This is obviously related to his emotional volatility and need for constant stimulation.

(3) How much all of his novels are based on his life experiences. Once again, I already knew much of his writing was based on things he had directly experienced but I didn't realize that apparently ALL of his best known works are based on things he went through, whether in World War I, or as an American expatriate in Spain, The Spanish Civil War or fishing and sailing in Cuba as an old man. Obviously a lot of fiction writing is autobiographical so this is hardly unique, but Hemingway seems to have taken it a bit further than most novelists.

So I didn't learn that much new about Hemingway from this book but it painted a picture of a person somewhat more intense and troubled than I had thought.

I also feel compelled to add that despite all the focus on Hemingway's colorful personal life he was clearly a capable writer and obviously took writing very seriously and worked hard at it. I have only read 2 of his works: "The Sun Also Rises" and "The Old Man and the Sea". I liked "The Old Man and the Sea" a LOT - the description, the sadness, the language, the atmosphere, but I didn't care too much for the "The Sun Also Rises" - boring unrelatable characters and a seemingly random plot (I suppose I just didn't get it). Even with that small exposure I can still appreciate his talent and see why he got famous.

So it perhaps a bit unfair to him that people talk so much about him as a personality and not as much about his work.

Ernest Hemingway is one of those authors I've wanted to understand.  I remember being bored to death while reading passages from 'The Old Man and the Sea' in high school.  However, I've always thought that I was missing something important by not understanding this author who won both the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for Literature during his lifetime.

Well, Ernest's early life explains why he was always searching out adventure and the 'manly arts' -- his mother dressed him as a girl to match his older sister.  He also seems to have been an insecure person who had to prove his manliness constantly, in the most dangerous situations.  His life was probably as interesting as his works.  This book is a great introduction to understanding how and why Hemingway honed his writing style the way he did.

Ernest Hemingway was born in Idaho, America in 1899 - 1961. Another wonderful book! At high school graduation a teacher ask Ernest Hemingway, What do you want to do after graduation? Hemingway said to write, travel, see the world and see adventures throughout and that is what he did. He travelled the world seeing France, Italy, Switzerland, Canada and other countries. He was in World War I and II and became a great Author. He was married four times and had numerous children. He wrote many short stories and novels.

This is an excellent and well written book with the lives of some great people. It was straight to the point of the way Hemmingway lived, and travelled throughout his life. A very good history lesson in a short book. I recommend this book to everyone that loves history and loves to read. I have seen some movies that were made from his books and read some of his books. This is a great read.

I feel as though I learned a lot about Hemingway after reading this one hour biography. I was struck by his restlessness. Michigan, Florida, Montana, many many times to Europe, safaris in Africa, bull fights in Spain, adventures and injuries in two World Wars. His writing was very 'masculine' and yet he did have wives and affairs with others during each marriage. It is pointed out that some believe he was manic depressive. His father killed himself and Hemingway at first decided his father was cowardly to do so, and yet in the end Hemingway killed himself as well.

Hemingway left a "mark on the world literature. He showed that blunt and simple prose made of short declarative sentences and repeated, limited word choices could be powerful". The book brings out the essence of this master "craftsman". His was indeed a multi-faceted personality, not averse to showing off his exploits and traits. He led a colourful life but that did not come in his way of crafting masterpieces like "The Old Man and the Sea", "For whom the Bells Toll" and "Farewell to Arms".

Hemingway was a complicated man. He’s portrayed as a great adventurer, but it seems he was constantly in pursuit of proving his masculinity and finding passion in life. He was in many accidents and possibly the many head injuries contributed to his suicide, though his father had also committed suicide. His literary legacy continues and his bigger-than-life persona also lives on. Inspiring and tragic, this was an interesting short biography.

Life, love, self

Love him or despise him, Hemingway lived his life on his own terms without condition. A writer of great stories, told in a conversational style that seemed natural. I liked most of his work but was astonished at his personal life decisions. This was a good, concise bio of a complicated, talented man and as well written as such a full life can be accounted for. The Hemingway I didn’t know

I did not know much about Hemingway and have not read his writings. I only knew that he killed himself and was married several times. So much talent but such a sad and depressing life. His fascination with violence made him a dark person. I wonder if any of his friends actually knew him.

I had read only one of his short stories and knew very little about him except for the titles of novels and that he was a drinker and womanizer as many authors from that period.
As a human being I find him vain, controlling and sadistic.
I will probably read The Old Man and the Sea, and The Sun Also Rises; the beginning and the end of his career.

I'd heard and learned a lot about Hemingway , but this short albeit biography was a delight to read. It tells Hemingway's life expertly. I had forgotten the many brushes with death the man with "muscular prose" had endured. This is an excellent introduction to Hemingway.

I have loved Papa Hemingway for years. But to finally know his own story is amazing. I was blown away by this book. The sad legacy of the Hemingway family is touched upon in this book and dealt with very professional. I adored this book and recommend it highly.
