Murder, Ye Bones

Rate this book
Private investigator Penny Trubble is all for an island vacation, but warm sand and surf comes at a cost. Her friend, Danior Vianu, is spending the summer working at a relative’s paranormal resort in San Paolo, Brazil, where the paranormal activity that is part of the resorts charm has gotten a bit too real for some; several guests, including a personal acquaintance, have gone missing, and Danior wants Penny to find out why. What she finds is trouble.
The vanished guests appear to be victims of a long-dead housekeeper who practiced voodoo using the bones of her victims. The past comes back to haunt them when Daemon Wraith, searches out the mysterious Voodoo Queen.
Working together to find a connection and stop the supernatural killer, Penny and Daemon are compelled to research the history of the haunted island. Has the Voodoo Queen found a way to transcend time in her quest for blood and sacrifice or are Penny and Daemon dealing with a copycat?

The book was okay. I found the grammatical errors and major problems with point of view very distracting. I had to go back to figure out who was talking many times. Also, Penny would go from first person point of view to third person and back to first in the same scene. Huh? The descriptions were often confusing and rushed. Example, Penny gets locked in the basement. The scene seems really short. There is no sense of time really passing. Yet, when she gets out, everyone has been looking for her. It just doesn't flow to me. Overall, the story was okay, but the very sloppy writing style really sort of blew it for me. Loved the cover and concept, but not well written.

Probably the best one in the series!

Great plot with an unexpected twist that will completely give you a different view of who did it. Okay I got it half right (one of the clues was just too obvious). The characters have strengthened in this book and seem much more alive.
She comes to the resort with three others to help, not only with the physical task of running the resort but also to do what they could to find two young girls that have gone missing. The girls looked so alike that they could have been sisters. Is this a serial killer's type of victim? However when six skeletons are discovered in the walls of the library, they learn a bit more of the history of the resort. Apparently a Voodoo Queen was responsible for multiple deaths and some of the victims were still missing even if the police had long closed the case. Add in a body washed-up on the beach, a body trapped in her submerged car, a body in a grave and more skeletons in the basement. Plus an attack and someone to free and easy with a strong shamanic drink for a read that moves fast but flows smoothly.

**This review is for the audiobook on Audible.**

Murder, Ye Bones: A Penning Trouble Mystery by Rachael Stapleton, narrated by Ellora Sen-Gupta is Book 8 in the Bohemian Lake series. As a whole, the series is made up of 3 unique storylines, each containing its own set of characters. Because they are all residents of Bohemian Lake, it's common to run into them in other books throughout the series. For me, this is the best part because I feel like I'm getting a 3 for 1 deal! Rachael Stapleton's ability to create a complex world of characters and storylines that cross-over and intersect with one another (all while keeping readers laughing and in high suspense) is unbelievable. Seriously, that kind of stuff happens in Hollywood. Rarely do I see it played out in books in such a consistent and effective manner. Needless to say, there's NEVER a dull moment. This episode follows private investigator Penny Trubble (my favorite of all the characters) to a paranormal resort in San Paolo, Brazil to find out what has happened to various guests who have gone missing. Filled with twists, turns, and a bit of voodoo, this audiobook will keep you engaged and guessing through to the last page!

The narration by Ellora Sen-Gupta is great, and I thoroughly enjoyed her performace. Her volume, voice, pace, and tone were all perfect in my opinion, making this an easy listen. Because everything is professionally recorded and edited, there's nothing that will confuse or distract you while listening. Although I'm sure both the Kindle and print versions of this book are just as good, I'm glad I chose the audiobook.

I give 5 out of 5 stars to Murder, Ye Bones: A Penning Trouble Mystery: Bohemian Lake, Book 8 by Rachael Stapleton, narrated by Ellora Sen-Gupta. It is entertaining, funny, and very well-written. Although this could be considered a stand-alone, I think your overall experience will be heightened if you start with Book 1. I recommend this audiobook and series to those who enjoy well-developed characters and storylines filled with mystery and humor. I'm looking forward to the next in series, and I'm sure you will feel the same.

Thank you for reading my review. I hope it was helpful. Happy listening! :-)

This is the third in the excellent Penning Trouble series by Rachael Stapleton and I have to say they just keep getting better and better. This one is set in Brazil and is centered around Voodoo. This book is creepier than the previous books and that is one of the reasons I loved it. If you have read the other books, then you will recognize the names below, if not, what are you waiting for? Danior Vianu and her boyfriend Emilion who both work at the Vianu B&B, go down to Brazil to help Nana's cousin who has bought the Paranormal Plantation. Lise Trix, who also works at the B&B offers to help as well and quickly follows them and disappears (there is history here, so read the other books). Nana Vianu sends Penny to her cousin's resort along with Daemon Wraith, a paranormal investigator, to try to find Lise and while there try to find out what happened to another guest. It seems as though history is repeating itself as several young women disappeared in the past and was attributed to a Voodoo Queen. She was hanged for her offenses, so what is happening now? There are numerous twists and turns to unravel to discover who is responsible for the disappearances. Daemon is featured prominently in this book and it is nice to get to know this character more. I feel things are in store for him in the future. If you haven't yet read the other books in the Bohemian Lake world, then check them out. There are currently three separate series set in Bohemian Lake and one of the things I really enjoy is there is a bit of crossover between them with a few of the characters. One of the funniest is Eve! She is one of the best characters I have ever read. When you read these books, please leave a review so Rachael will keep writing them.

A fun if not convoluted story.

Penny Trouble, private investigator is in San Paulo, Brazile for some fun and relaxation while her friend Danior Vianu is working at a cousins paranormal resort.

When a couple of guest goes missing, Danior wants Penny to find out why. With the help of Daemon Wraith, they uncover several bodies. Things appear to tie back to the Voodoo Queen who was accused of murdering several young girls decades ago. Is the Voodoo Queen really dead, or is someone following her footsteps and re-creating past horrors.

Rachael stapleton has a good story with well developed characters, a few good laughs, and lots of suspense along with some red herrings to bring you to a surprising conclusion.

Penny Trubble, a private investigator is looking for a personal acquaintance that has gone missing at a paranormal resort in San Paolo, Brazil. The problem is, it looks like a long dead housekeeper is the cause of the missing guests, as she used voodoo on them. Then Daemon Wraith, ghost hunter extraordinaire, joins in the search for the mysterious Voodoo Queen. Is this the work of the long dead Voodoo Queen or is this a copycat? You will need to read the book for the answers. By the way, this is not to be taken seriously! It is a fun read, so enjoy! I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Murder Ye Bones (A Penning Trouble Mystery, #3), my ninth read from author Rachel Stapleton and it won’t be my last. Extremely well written, the characters, well developed. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make a reader get invested into the characters and thereby the book and this book has it all! No matter the genre you can always count on a good read, I will be reading more by prolific author Rachel Stapleton. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Please, Ms. Stapleton, hire a proofreader. The plotlines and characters are really good, but I was highly disappointed in this 3rd volume. Unlike the first two books, Murder Ye Bones appeared to have no proofreader whatsoever. The first several chapters were just abysmal. I almost quit reading. Mistaken words such as your/you're, totally incorrect words, skipped words, and really odd incorrect comma usage made it a very difficult read. About halfway through the book this magically improved (or I became immune). It was really odd.

Penny is called to investigate missing girls that disappeared without a trace. But nothing is as it seems. With suspicion that an old legend of a Voodoo Queen is at fault for the disappearances, more facts come to light.
This is the first in this series I have read and was hooked from the first few pages. It builds you up throughout the book and keeps you on the edge of your seat to an ending I never saw coming!

Penny Trubble is off to Brazil for a vacation while searching for some missing girls. Penny and Danior are staying at Danior 's cousins paranormal resort. They meet up with some interesting residents including the Voodoo Queen. Old bones are found and the recent girls are still missing. Are they connected? Is voodoo involved.

Great story! Love these characters.

I love all of the Bohemian Lake Books but this was my favorite. I loved how it wasn’t a typical murder mystery. It doesn’t take place in Bohemian Lake but you still have the Bohemian Lake feel.
