A Darker Hollow #3

Hybrid Reset

Rate this book
If vampires had yearbooks, I’d probably be listed as “Lucas, the Least Likely to Succeed.” After all, I’m living in the basement of a spooky old house about to fall down around my ears and a blood thrall named Liam brings me the blood of small game, so I won’t starve to death. It all started when some werewolves attacked our coven and killed off all the vampires, except for a few of us who managed to escape the bloodbath. But as the youngest, I still didn’t know how to hunt or even survive the sunlight, so I was stuck here in this old mausoleum of a house.  That is, until the werewolves came back. They found me right away, of course, and to my shock, they had Valerian, the leader of my old coven, living with them as the mate of the alpha wolf, Finn. Valerian and Mason, the beautiful blond mate of both Finn and Valerian—don’t ask; it’s way too complicated—both begged Finn to let me stay. He did, but he put me under the control of a big, mean, gorgeous, sexy wolf named Connor.

Don’t get me wrong. My old sire, Tolan, the sadist, trained me to do as I’m told. But sometimes, I forget and that really gets on Connor’s nerves. I see the relationship with Valerian and his mates and I want something like that for myself. I want to belong to someone. I want someone to love me. And more and more I think I want that someone to be Connor. But that may be something he can’t ever give me.”

A new pack, a new beginning, a little betrayal, some frequent fighting, a lot of sex and even some spanking, and you have a rousing and romantic adventure with the Hybrid wolves.

A werewolf who has lost his mate, a vampire that's lost his coven. These two men should mix like oil and water...and they do, but there's also something immensely intriguing about one another that neither man can deny for very long. Everything is against their union but it's whether or not they're willing to fight for one another to be together that really matters.

It felt like I was missing something. As soon as the book opened I was wondering if I should have read the first two books in the series. The answer is yes, even though this can kind of be read as a standalone. A bit of background was explained at times and I appreciated this because there were so many dynamics and connections that led this little misfit/hybrid pack to where they were that I would have been lost and even more confused without that. That being said, there were a LOT of words. The amount of background explanations along with the descriptions just didn't make the plot move forward. They were kind of more FYI moments.

I wish the story had been more focused on Lucas and Conner because there was so little on the building of a relationship. I mean, at what point did they actually want more than to give in to the intoxicating smells and chemistry they had? The discovery of one another so as to give them more than an impossible second blood match seemed to be missing. It read like Conner and Lucas just had to suffer through this torturous relationship because there was really no other option since fate stuck them together in more ways than one. There was so little to these two men, for whom the story was written, that I just don't believe in them as a couple.

Their page time was further reduced by the situation between Mason, Finn, and Velerian. These three men really needed their own third book to sort through all the stuff they've got going on. Instead, they made room for themselves in Lucas and Conner's story and ended up not giving either relationship pairing justice.

So it sounds as if I'm not a fan of the book. And that's not entirely true. While I didn't jive with how the story was put together and the distractions based on confusion and other relationships' issues, I did really like the intricacies of their world. There's so much here that makes me want to go back and read about how they got to this point in the first place. And the drama with the hunters? Their connection to Lucas was both a surprise and a little predictable. I had a feeling there would be a connection like that, but to the degree it was and the result it brought about between Lucas and Conner, that was a welcome surprise. Overall, the story had immense potential but needed a bit more of an objective eye when it came to beta reading, I feel.

Lucas is a new-ishly made vampire struggling to survive after an attack on his home killed almost everyone else.
Connor is a werewolf, travelling to a new state with his new misfit pack. It turns out that Connor's new place is Lucas' current one.
Connor takes an immediate dislike to Lucas despite knowing in his soul that Lucas is his blood mate.
While I enjoyed this story, I did find it a little confusing at times. I haven't read the other books in the series & it quickly became apparent that I would have enjoyed this one a lot more had I read the others in the series first.

Fair warning: this is a review, a rant, and a spoilerish summary all in one. And long, very long. I'm too pissy.

Last night when I started this series with this book (yes, I like to start series out of order) I was really excited... until I read something that made my blood boil. But let's go back to the beginning so you can understand.

I used to be a fan of the Dark Hollow Pack series from one of the authors of this collab... until now. It was really good, interesting characters and an engrossing plot. the series has 15 books and like any long series, it turned repetitive and annoying in some parts, which made me want to take a break from it, hence I didn't read the last 2 books. Heavens knew I did the right thing. One of my fav characters is Jeremy, the villain-throughout-the-series-turned-good-guy in book 12, Bad Wolf. He and his mate Connor are one of my top couples from it.

I didn't connect the dots when I read that one of the MCs from this book was called Connor too. So imagine my surprised when I was reading the first pages from Connor's POV and find out Jeremy was dead. Killed in the last book. Furious cannot even describe how I feel right now. Obviously, in the last book (Civil War) there was a war and a lot of blah, blah, and as the final book, I imagined the author wanted to go with a bang. And what a bang it was. Because of course someone had to die and of course killing the former bad guy was the only option. Why not kill the annoying Nicky or the jackass Marco? Probably because fans would stop reading this author (not that I wanted ANYONE dead but I rather have one of them than Jeremy).

About this whole series, as I had to check the first books after this horrible surprise: it's like a copy from DHP series, making some old characters appear just so they can link the series and make fans want to buy it. We exchange the hunters for vampires as obviously, the wolves cannot have a little peace because that would be like asking the author to write something 'new'. The characters are also carbon copies from DHP (Nicky, Logan, etc), which didn't help to improve my opinion. Not to mention Connor was completely different from that time, there were only glimpses from his old self. He gets another mate, he talks to his old pack, 'new issues' (ha, that made me laugh) arise and at the same time some problems are getting in everyone's way so they have to fight, f*ck, fight some more and f*ck some more, then rest while they wait for the next installment, which is going to be something along those lines again.

In other words, for me DHP series ends in book 13 -if things don't go from bad to worse starting with it. And this one... well, it's not even worth my time. As annoying as I found Nicky, I prefer the original than any copy.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This series is continuing to intrigue me. I liked getting to see Mason, Finn and Valerian continuing to build the trust in their relationship. Connor has been mourning his dead mate for a long time and has trouble accepting his pull to Lucas. Lucas hasn’t had the best life since he was turned into a vampire and he still has trouble knowing what to do.

They are beginning a new pack that will be welcoming and it’s going to be a little bit of an adjustment. Finn and Valerian are still trying to feel accepted by their mates and for different reasons and Mason’s open defiance doesn’t help matters.

I was glad to see Mason, Finn and Valerian recognizing the work their relationship needs and taking some of the steps they need. I could feel Connor and Lucas’s pain and worries regarding their situation and how to act. I don’t always like when it takes a life or death situation for someone to completely accept how they feel for someone. I feel bad that Lucas wasn’t able to get the closer he hoped for and how what happened may affect his mother.

I liked cover art by E Keith it gives a nice visual of the house and of Connor and follows the style of the first book.

An interesting reworking of the the vampires vs werewolves story.

This book centers around a vampire protagonist - Lucas - turned against his will, the child of a 'somebody' family instead of a 'nobody' who wouldn't be missed. The man that turned him - the MONSTER - that turned him is dead, the coven he'd been forced into, enslaved to, all dead, and Lucas is slowly starving to death in the moldering remains of the plantation estate that had served as the coven house.

Enter protagonist #2 - Connor. The werewolf. Beta of the newly formed hybrid pack. It's a hybrid pack because the pack alpha has two mates - one is a vampire and the other is... yet to be determined beyond the fact that he's a supernat. Connor's mate is dead and he's just as dead inside. Except the sick, weakly little vampire they found lingering in their new pack home smells like mate. Which can't be right because wolves mate for life and they only mate once. Except his alpha has _two_ mates, the vampire and the yet to be determined supernat. But Connor doesn't _like_ vampires. He barely tolerates his alpha's mate only because he has to.

So why does Lucas smell like his? And why does Valerian - the vampire mate - claim Lucas as his, as part of the pack. Something which the pack alpha - Finn - agrees to. And why did his alpha saddle him with the responsibility of taking care of the whiny little vamp? Also, why does he want to rip of fellow pack member Seth's head because Seth seems interested in _his_... in the vampire. It's not like Lucas is Connor's - his inner wolf's opinion to the contrary.

But Lucas, though he may be submissive, isn't weak. The vamp who created him abused, tortured, and raped him repeatedly until Lucas forgot himself for a while. But being back with Valerian, being amongst the wolves is reminding Lucas that he isn't a coward and that he does have a choice in things - even if that choice is permanent death.

The question is - will Connor get his head out of his ass before it's too late and he's lost yet another mate?

I enjoyed this book. It was well written, the action moved and flowed and it was a good set up for the continuation of the series.

3.75* Hybrid Reset is the third book in the Darker Hollow series and cannot be read as a standalone. While the first two books followed Finn, Valerian, and Mason, this book follows Connor and Lucas and focuses more on building the pack and getting to know those included. I didn’t like this one quite as much as the first two, though it is a good read. I really liked seeing Lucas’s POV of everything that happens and learns his worth.

Connor is a wolf from the original series and pack from the Dark Hollow Wolf Pack series. He lost his mate Jeremy and realized that becoming a part of the new pack might help him get some distance from his grief.

Lucas is a, relatively, newly turned vampire that has no idea how to “vampire”. His entire coven and his sire (sadistic as he was) were destroyed by Finn, Valerian, and Mason in an earlier book in the series and prior to this he was never taught how to hunt and feed. Liam is a “blood thrall” who helps keep him fed and keeps him company during this time. (I really want to know what happened to Liam!) Lucas is about to give up hope when Valerian insists that the new pack return to his old coven home and finds Lucas and Liam.

(May contain spoilers from here on.)

“Connor, what do you think? Do you believe in ghosts?” “Maybe not,” I said, staring toward the old mansion. “But that sure looks like a ghost staring at us from the front porch.”

Connor instantly dislikes Lucas, though he realizes almost immediately that Lucas is his blood mate and the reason he survived when his previous mate was killed. This book focuses on the push and pull between Lucas and Connor while Connor is still trying to process his grief and learn to communicate with a new mate and Lucas isn’t even sure he wants to be alive / a vampire anymore. Something happens when Lucas tries to go home that forces both of them to realize they need each other to survive.

Connor lost him blood mate. Living in a fog, unwilling to let his emotion out. His alpha has two mates, a wolf and a vampire. He follows them to a new home where they all plan to start a new pack. Living with a vampire is bad enough but moving into a an old house full of vampire smells is not how he wants his life to to be. Especially when one of those smells is very enticing.

Lucas has been barely surviving. Getting by on the blood of small animals, found for him by his thrall Liam. Wishing he had the courage to walk into the sun and end his life, he barely exists. When his old leader Valerian returns with his new mates, they bring him Connor.

Connor knows right away that Lucas is his blood mate. It takes Lucas a little longer to figure it out. Lucas decides that he needs to leave after Valerian tells him the wolves will never love them. He's tired of his existence and decides to end his life once and for all. He goes home because he wants to see his mother one more time. He's definitely not prepared for what he finds there.

I liked the continuation of the story, but who knew werewolves and vampires could be such drama queens? A little over the top at times but an enjoyable read. Looking forward to learning more about this new pack.

I received an arc of this book for review.

Lucas is barely surviving. And then strangers come to the house he never left. Connor lost his mate and struggles daily to survive. Can Connor and Lucas find reasons to live within each other?
Hybrid Reset by Shannon West and T.S. McKinney is third in the Darker Hollow series. While I could figure out the dynamics I believe reading it in chronological order would have been beneficial.
I must admit it took me a minute to like Connor. I understood he was dealing with pain but boy did I hate how he treated Lucas. Lucas didn’t ask for the life he is currently living. He is pretty clueless about what it means to be a vampire but he is trying. I really didn’t like Connor’s treatment of Lucas. He attempted to keep their sexual relationship as just that even as Lucas’ emotions were engaged. Ms. West and Ms. McKinney did make it easy to understand why but I didn’t like it. They also made it interesting to see how this group of misfits were struggling to become a cohesive pack. Their histories made trust difficult between each other. I love that danger was used as the catalyst for change and acceptance.
I enjoyed the destination even as I struggled with the journey. But overall Ms. West and Ms. McKinney gave me a well-written story.

Perhaps I should have started with the start of the series instead of this book, but we get a run down of past events anyway so I didn't feel like I missed much.
If I had any doubt who was mated with who, they made sure to mention it repeatedly every time the person was in focus.

I wanted more of the couple it was suppose to be about, to see where things developed, too little time was given to let the reader get to know Connor and Lucas together and we only got to see the physical and Connor still being hung up on his former mate. So not sure how Lucas went from feeling alone to having full trust in Connor in such a short time.

Might have just been me but it didn't deliver what I think it should have.

Conner and Lucas have a very entertaining and intriguing love story. Conner fights against it st first because he already had a mate he loved and lost. He also finds it hard having a Blood Match with a vampire, since he is a werewolf and the two have always been mortal enemies. But this new pack they are in is a hybrid pack of vampires, werewolves and something else no-one has a name for yet. And in that pack Conner and Lucas finally start to see that they belong. HYBRID reset is Well written with great story and characters.

I received this book as an Advanced Readers Copy and am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

Skipped the first 2 installments based on reviews. The authors did try to redeem Finn and Valerian in this book. Connor and Lucus made a nice couple but their relationship was undeveloped. Rushed ending with telling. Weak HFN for Connor and Lucus. Undetermined and unresolved ending for Finn, Valerian and Mason. Also, per reviews, Connor's character changed from the The Dark Hollow series.

I am loving this series.

What makes a book shine for me are two things. The emotions I can feel and how complex and we'll thought out the world of society the author created. Shannon West and T. S. McKinney nailed both. Their take on supernatural has kept me intrigued and wanting more. In fact it just keeps getting stronger with each book. I wanted so much for Conner after his loss and Lucas is perfect for him. I still have some doubts about others in their lack and I can't wait to see what happens next. I would like to see Liam eventually get a story. Plus there are still some issues that need to be resolved.
