Road Rage: The Blog, Unleashed

Rate this book
On October 30th, a man calling himself Simon started a blog, Road Rage. He claimed that he was going to kill several people that offended him with their belligerent driving style. After several claimed murders, the FBI assigned Special Agent Monique “Nikki” Sebastian, to the case to monitor the blog and see if she could start a dialog with the suspected serial killer, to possibly verify his claims. Very quickly, Nikki realized that not only was Simon doing exactly what he claimed, she found that he is not your run of the mill serial killer. Simon seems to function with some sort of moral code and the victims he chooses may very well be deserving of the attention given. Nikki also found that she was not sure who was hunting whom, as the communication between her and Simon became very personal.

As you get to know Simon and the Rage that he carries with him, you will find there is a lot more to this man than some random serial killer. He is a man with very unique “problem solving” skills and he really enjoys his work and the mission he has taken on to help rid the world of some really unnecessary… bad drivers…

“Unleashed” is the first in the Road Rage the Blog series of novels. The books contain adult language and graphic violence. Enter at your own risk because you just might agree with Simon’s mission.

Road Rage had an interesting description that really tells everything you need to know about this book before diving in. Let me give you a warning though, if you’re the type of driver who is a jerk on the roads, this should make you rethink your bad driving. Simon has had enough of bad drivers on the road, though I don’t get the impression he’s the best of drivers, but he wants everyone else to follow his rules for the road. Sure, some items are common courtesy, for example, if you’re driving in the left lane on a highway, you should move over when you’re finished passing vehicles. Simon is fed up and has decided to start making the bad drivers pay.

Simon seems to have a lot of skills. He’s a skilled stalker, has all the abilities needed to hack anything he wants, and is sadistic in his torture and killing of those who drive poorly. He will then blog his rage, his actions, and eventually his torture and killing methods. And he has quite the following on the blog, not that everyone believes he’s actually doing the killing so he’ll have to give clues to make sure they know it’s the truth.

What I didn’t like. These authors write about how terrific a FBI agent Nikki is, how tough she is, how she closes cases. It’s absolutely ridiculous to me that they would try to make a character a tough agent who then at the slightest hint of attraction from a serial killer falls in love with a man leaving bodies in his wake. Who would lose all her professionalism and just allow it to continue. But, not only make this woman so weak-willed that she can’t do her job, a job that she supposedly lives by, because of her new found love. But, not only is Nikki willing to compromise her beliefs, and her job but so is her boss. No big deal, serial killer running around on the loose but, hey, that’s ok. This would have been a 5-star book for me, if not for this huge issue. I mean, pretty soon it will have to say: oh, we can’t allow women in the FBI because as soon as one sweet talker comes around they’ll fall into a puddle at his feet and be useless in their jobs anymore.

Minus the female character, I thought this was a great book, that is quite terrifying, lol. It’s an interesting concept and one that could probably be pretty accurate, minus the perfect killer with the perfect skills. I was really engrossed in this book and it did not take me long to read it, I couldn’t put it down. Simon definitely ran the spectrum of victims, not just the douchey jerk on the road, but what about the single mom, or what happens when your target is the husband of one of your blog readers. We get the inside look into how Simon chooses his targets and what he carries out on them. I’d definitely recommend this book, and I’d also definitely recommend you pay more attention to your driving!

Road Rage is unlike any thriller I've come across and it totally creeped me out. Simon is a serial killer with purpose. You only end up in his crosshairs if you happen to break one of his rules of the road - at least at first. In between Simon's blog posts, we get some grisly details of his "consequences" and a budding relationship with the FBI agent assigned to the case. I'm not sure which parts were more chilling, the blog posts, the acts themselves, or the emails between Simon and Nikki. Along the way, we get a few twists in the story, including a couple of other serial killers, and a thoroughly jaw-dropping ending. As this is the first in the series, I'll be interested to see where it goes from here.
