Omega War #3

Dark Moon Arisen

Rate this book
The war continues!

The Omega War is in full swing. Earth has fallen to General Peepo’s army, and the surviving Human mercenaries have taken refuge at the hidden Winged Hussars’ base in New Warsaw.

On Earth, the defensive forces fight to keep the hearts and minds of their fellow Humans, but Peepo’s plans are slowly converting the people to her way of thinking, and the Mercenary Guild troops continue to root out the forces arrayed against them.

Outnumbered and on the run, the situation is bleak, but none of the Horsemen like being on the defensive. When they get intelligence that Peepo is massing resources at a secret base, they decide to launch a decisive counterattack that may open Earth up to recapture.

Meanwhile, Dr. Sato, the Hussar’s brilliant but unpredictable scientist, unwittingly reactivates a 20,000-year-old doomsday weapon with a mind of its own. If it can’t be stopped, all the Four Horsemen’s plans might become meaningless.

Forces are moving both in the shadows and in the light, but who will rise victorious? One thing is for sure…a Dark Moon has Arisen.

I obtained this book through the Kindle Unlimited program. Yes, I am a year late getting it read and reviewed. I have no excuse.

As I was sorting through the appropriate windows to write the review (Amazon, Goodreads, word processor) I found an opportunity to be grateful that the chosen title for this installment was “Dark Moon Arisen,” and not “Bad Moon On The Rise.” I spent decades associating that with a plumbing facility on the eastern side of a northbound hallway, and didn't need the earworm.

Perhaps others will find meaning in other aspects of this story, of which there are several. However, probably because I have so DRASTICALLY read these books out of series, my attention was riveted on the actions of the stupendous genius with all of the lively curiosity of a three-year-old, while possessing not one-fifth of the self-restraint, Taiki Sato.

I am currently Papa to two, no, wait, that's THREE three-year-olds, so I know whereof I speak. If anyone needed to be placed in stasis when not under the direct supervision of a competent adult with spanking privileges, it's Sato. Yes, surely it's the case that he will produce some marvelous technological break-throughs for you; however, that ONLY serves as a reason not to administer a lethal solution to him post-haste. It is not, repeat NOT, an excuse for allowing him unsupervised access to a playroom. Do you want to have banana squished into the bottom cavities of all the Legos? Do you want to have the entire ship converted into plasma? Because this is how you get banana-stuffed Lego plasma ships. And not in a nice way.

Somewhat along those same lines, but not as lethal, and far more amusing, are the SalSha. Is there ANYONE who doesn't love the SalSha? Give me the names! Bring them here, right now! True, you cannot have a universe composed of nothing but SalSha, but a universe without them wold be a sadder place. Admittedly, the space analogue of the motor pool sergeant would have a vastly different experience. They do have a propensity for bending and scraping the craft they are given to pilot, but MOST of the time, that will buff out just fine. Most of the time. And they are always sorry, afterward. However, their own experiences with the voracious grahp on their homeworld have instilled in them a respect for danger, and an understanding of what it means to be a part of the team, that transforms them from clowns in a demolition derby to precisely the sort of people you want with you in tight spots.

I just read that an editorial decision was made at DC comics that none of the main characters were to be permitted to have happy lives at home, so no marriages, etc. This was to preserve an 'edgy' feel to the characters. Well, poot on that! I think it's a GOOD thing that folks get to have some romantic satisfaction, even if it DOES bring complications. What of it? There are going to be complications in the life of the calmest person, living in the calmest town imaginable. Winged Hussar leader Alexis Cromwell has enough responsibility; I applaud her personal alliance, especially since she isn't violating the rules by taking advantage of someone in her chain of command.

Lots of lovely scenes of exploding space-ships, lots of other aspects of the best of space opera, and plenty of combat scenes which combine super-duper techno whizz-bangs, with the good old fashioned knuckle sandwich to the nose. If you are looking for characters to inspire you, you will find them here.

A final word: I find the names of the four recently acquired battlecruisers to be a bit off-putting. I have no problem with 'Arion,' a mythical horse with unmatched speed, nor with 'Shadowfax,' the horse Gandalf took from King Whatsis in the 'Lord of the Rings.' But 'Phaeton' wasn't a horse; he was a guy who couldn't manage the horses that drew the sun chariot through the sky, which necessitated a lightning bolt from Zeus. And Nuckelavee? Horrid, horrid sea monster horse that ate people and destroyed crops, and NO ONE (well, one little old lady-thing) could control it.

The Four Horsemen Strike at the Merc Guild

An excellent addition to the ever-growing Four Horsemen Universe. The third installment of the Omega War Series leaves you wondering how the Merc Guild will respond to the Horsemen's retaliatory strike.

Now that the Four Horsemen have finally rendezvoused at New Warsaw they can finally figure out how to strike back at General Peepo and the Mercenaries Guild. But with things moving fast, they don't have much time to get the new ships acquired from 2nd level hyperspace into fighting shape. Trying to move things along, Alexis Cromwell gives the mad scientist Sato permission to investigate one of the 2 Egleesius-type ships that they haven't been able to breech and examine, while the Horsemen go off to raid the Merc Guild's space dock. Unfortunately, Sato, pushing the limits of Cromwell's allowances, he sets into motion events which may create a situation from which there will be no recovery.

Another awesome book in the 4HU series. This time, the Four Horsemen fight back against the Mercenary Guild and General Peepo, by taking the space shipyards at Golara, and adding some of the ships waiting there to the Winged Hussars forces.
Meantime, Dr. Sato is stranded on a planet killer ship, along with a rescue team from Bert's Bees and members of the Golden Horde. After accidentally powering up the ship, Sato determines the ship's target is Capital Planet of the galactic Union, killing millions of innocent aliens. The Four Horsemen risk their lives to stop the ship before it can detonate and destroy the planet.

It's all or nothing, and the stakes are huge, but the Horsemen manage the impossible.

The Four Horsemen are taking the fight to Peebo

One of the ships in storage has come alive thanks to Sato. Unfortunately it is a planet killer and once it is awoken it starts its final mission to kill Capital Planet. They have to stop it from doing that!! Read to find out what they go through to make that happen!!

Always satisfies but leaves me wanting more.

From the first book I read in this series I was hooked and it keeps getting better. With such engaging characters and witty story telling, I consume the stories with a ravenous appetite.

Please keep doing what you are doing, I will keep reading.

Excellent

This is an excellent continuation of the Four Horsemen series. It continues to develop the characters of the leaders of the Four Horsemen and continues the storyline. All in all in excellent read. I read this on Kindle unlimited.

More interesting every book ...

As we learn more of the ancient war, this universe gets more depth, and recent events gain new meaning. Makes a more interesting read, and a great addition to the combat. Well worth your time and money

Another Great Addition

This is another great addition to the Four Horseman Universe. The authors bring characters to life in ways you feel their joy and pain. I stayed up all night reading.

Two main stories, one with the Winged Hussars and the rest of the Four Horsemen continuing to acquire ships to help them in the battle with Peepo. Then the Hussar's mad scientist makes a terrible (and probably foreseeable) mistake and causes the human forces a ton of problems.
