Ryker

They all think they know me...

I'm just a kid who has no direction and a bunch of problems. I decided long ago that the world can piss off. I'm the only one I need. I keep myself safe. If you don't rely on anyone, no one can disappoint you. Right?

Griffon

I'm not easily liked.

No, let me be honest. Most people hate me. I'm the a-hole. The boy-man who lives and breathes sarcasm. I have no friends. I barely have any family. And the new people I meet are always charmed, at first, but eventually they steer clear of me too.

Except for the guy sitting across from me.

The one who has bigger problems than you could ever imagine.

Who knew eventually he'd be a problem, for me, and...

One that I want.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

The tone of this book is really how I like to read. The writing is hard-core, first person POV and the story is written as if we are inside both characters’ heads and the writing is sometimes dialogue, but also bursts of intense thought from both characters. Griffon opens the book and he’s sarcastic and cutting and calls it like he sees it. He’s not going to be for everyone, but I was feeling him. The guys meet in rehab and are immediately drawn to each other. They are both 20 and they fall in love fast with all of the crazy emotion of being an addict and falling in love for the first time. They both feel like they have no one and the author gets the intensity of their feelings just right for their age and situation and the intimate scenes are raw and powerful.

Once out of rehab, they meet up again, not without some drama, and quickly realize how far apart their life experiences are. But, they want to be together. There is lots of family drama that takes some time to uncover and when it’s revealed, it’s drastic and traumatic and even though it mostly takes place behind closed doors and the scenes are blurred at the edges, the impact is intense.

Review by The Blogger Girls.

This is one of those stories where the characters and style of writing just suck me in. They had such a story to tell, and I was on board from the get go when Ryker and Griffon meet in rehab. They don’t just hit it off right away or have any kind of instalust or love either. They end up realizing they sort of get each other in ways others don’t. Or that they understand the circumstances that lead to their addictions, even if they don’t know all of the details. So, they clicked, opposites attracted in more ways than one, until they end up replacing their current addictions with their addiction to each other. The whole time I kept thinking this was such an unhealthy way to go, using their relationship and feelings for each other as a replacement for their other addictions. What happens if/when things go south? Will they fall back into the same old patterns?

Much of this story was fleshing out these two wonderfully flawed characters. It has a gritty realistic feel to it that just rang true for me. I loved the way it was told and how it made me feel and care about them. I wanted them to succeed and find happiness on their own and with each other. Life doesn’t just get easier for them once they return to it, and there are a number of setbacks, but that all made it more interesting to me.

Sometimes, I start a book, and within a few pages or so, I can just feel it is a five-star book. This most definitely had that feeling when the story began. It continued throughout most of the story, but, unfortunately, about 3/4 of the way through, things happened that just didn’t make sense or left too much off the page for that feeling to last. We were so involved for most of the story, and then, in the end, it felt as though details were left out or events skimmed over leaving a sense of longing for a different outcome.

However, I love a book that leaves me with a book hangover where I can’t get the characters out of my head and where I really don’t want to let them go. That was for sure the case here. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author and hope to make the same connection with the writing style and gripping characters in the future.

3.5 STARS, I enjoyed the novella prior to this one a bit more but it was interesting. The author keeps doing these WFT last sentence endings that leave you with a ???

Messed Up

This is a messed up story about two messed up young men. I’m not sure I liked either one of them. Their personalities were so alike that I had a hard time keeping up with who was speaking. Lastly the beginning was slow and the ending was rushed.

Griffon;
Have you ever been afraid of yourself?
Yes, I’m afraid of myself.

Warning: SPOILERS

I only have one issue with this book, but unfortunately it's a big one and the reason I didn't rate this higher. It's the last part of the book, starting with when Griffon left Ryker while he was getting hurt by his dad. What the fuck was that? This guy that you claim to love is getting beaten by his father and not only do you LEAVE him, you ghost him for a week while he deals with the fallout by himself (by cutting himself). When the two are reunited there is no talk about what happens. All is just magically forgiven and forgotten.

In addition to not liking that, the whole potential climax of the book is completely skipped over. Ryker spends the whole book talking about how he wants to bring his father down and take everything he has, so I'm thinking this is leading up to the climax of the book and there will be this epic show down between Ryker and his father. Instead, ALL of this happens off page. We are told after the fact what happens, and then the book just ends. And I'm sitting here thinking: whaaaaaaat? And not in a good way either. I felt cheated out of an ending. The author spent so much page time developing these two awesome characters, and it's like she just got tired of writing and ended it with a few sentences.

What I did like, and the reason I gave this a full 3 stars is the characters of Griffon and Ryker. I liked them from the first pages they appeared on. They are so incredibly fucked up, and they have got this unhealthy obsession with each other (honestly mostly coming from Ryker) and I loved it. I liked that they weren't a magical cure for each other, and I like that their problems with addiction and self harm didn't just vanish when they fell in love. I also really enjoyed the way this was written. The writing painted a very vivid portrait of these two and I felt like I really got to know them. Characters can easily make or break a book, and they made this book. I just wish the ending did the rest of the book justice.

3 stars!

This is an interesting book for me as I expected it to be amazing based on how much I enjoyed Him Her Me You Us and even though I like Ruin I don't love it. There is a lot packed into this book and at times it is extremely dark as well as having many beautiful and poignant moments between Ryker and Griffon. The pain, loneliness and sadness they both experience drives them to do whatever they can to alleviate it even if their solutions cause more harm in the long run. Together Ryker and Griffon have a chance to face and conquer the demons that haunt them if they can learn to trust each other. I like how the author kept us guessing as there are many unexpected twists and turns in the story. The secondary characters are great, especially Baby and Pierce, but the ending is pretty abrupt and left me wanting more. Unfortunately more than once I found it difficult to follow the story as the POV's would change several times without warning and there are some editing issues as well but as I read an ARC copy these may have been rectified before it was published.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

There's a lot to like about this book. The author does a good job with the narrative, of showing, not telling, and allowing events to unfold organically.

However, the pacing is uneven, maybe a little choppy, so maybe the author kind of lets things get away from her? The conflicts that drive the plot are slowly revealed and the book becomes more exciting towards the last half.

I was a little confused about the two MCs at first. For example, as the chapters alternate between Ryker and Griffon, they were not easily distinguishable and I kept getting them confused. They became recognizable as individuals in the second half.

I think it was a good effort. Good foretelling using Richard II as a literary device.

There are a few grammatical errors, mostly related between "to vs. too".

Suspenseful, erotic and beautiful

I will be quite honest that I did not read the dialog of this book. I'm a huge fan of Daya's work and she keeps me open minded and when I saw her newest book out, I had to get it. With that being said, this book had it all. Suspense, drama, sadness, love and a whole lot of spice. I don't usually read books about two men but I did enjoy this story. I had a lot of WTF and what's going to happen moments, but the story came together beautifully and I really enjoyed. As always her stories captivate me. If you can keep it open mind and enjoy books with suspense, drama, sadness, love and a whole lot of spice, give this book a read.

Excellent book - Dual POV
Ruin has been a much anticipated release for me. I love the authors writing and I have enjoyed reading her early books and it makes me smile to see how much she grows as a professional as her writing just gets better and better.

Griffon and Ryker each have backgrounds that lead them to each other. Both are similar but the jagged edges are different in each character. It's a great story and written, edited very well with an excellent playlist as usual.

The Novella War Babies, was one of my first reads by Ms. Daniels and I welcomed the appearances of Pierce and Baby in the Ruin novel. Keep writing!

This is a truly bittersweet read; dark for moments, full of suspense always, this book will keep you reading, and reading until the end.

The writing is excellent, the story flows effortlessly and the conflict unfolds in such an organic way you find yourself in its centre without barely noting how that happened.

The main characters are three-dimensional and their reasons easy to understand; the secondary ones were great, too.

A recommended read.

I received this book as an ARC, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

Painful and Excellent!

This story was absolutely amazing! So many different emotions to deal with. I loved it. A story so deep, painful and intense. You will laugh at times and cry without a doubt. Ryker and Griffon are so amazing together as they battle the same drug addiction demon and individual demons as well. Their love story is beautiful, tragic, HOT and not for the faint of heart. A well written story that is addicting and will leave you craving more. Well done Daya Daniels. Well done!

Managed to struggle through 35% of this book. 1.5 hours of my life I’ll never get back.

I don’t care how much pre cum a guy produces - if his dick is wet and dripping before anything has happened he had a disease.

”And I know when his lips touch mine, I’ll be forever changed. I know he’ll ruin me.”

This story was fine until a critical moment when one main character let the other one down in a major way. It had a big impact on my enjoyment so I rated it down.
