It was better than the first volume!

Story-the plot thickened with new revelations and more suffering. *suffering in progress* Despite being a time travel kinda story and repeating the same days again and again, it never got boring thanks to the characters.

Characters- the best part of the novel is its characters. We have been introduced to new characters: twin demon maids-Ram and Rem, sarcastic librarian magician Beatrix and eccentric owner of the mansion Roswell. Subaru while being an interesting silly brave character, made the story more enjoyable by interacting new characters and of course his "lover" Emilia. There were not a single character I hate, as I love all of them for some reason.

Enjoyment- if suffering counts as enjoyment... Then yes! I enjoyed Subaru's bad luck, terrible and heartbreaking moments and on the contrary side, cute and funny events now and then.

Writing style-There were scenes where I laughed as if I am watching the anime with silly jokes. There were scenes where it was so shocking and twisted that I cringed. There were scenes where main character's agony resonated in me and I became breathless. The writing style was incredible! I want more!
Onto the next volume!

The computer I'm using shut off before I could save my review and I don't know whether that will happen again so this will be short.

This book starts off light with Subaru making jokes and flirting with Emilia (characters were smiling all the time), and then things get serious, Subaru changes and a potentially interesting plot is introduced. Props to the author for drawing me into Subaru's emotional journey and I'm excited to see what will happen next.

Warning, this book ends with a cliffhanger, but it's worth it.

A bit of a slow-paced read BUT I am totally back in my Re:Zero obsession now that Season 3 was announced the other night. Rem is my favourite character and this basically introduces her and her twin - cute maid twins 🥹
I’ve been loving the visual novel/video game of Re:Zero on my Nintendo Switch aswell, so I’m spending a lot of time with these characters lately 💕

What an improvement!

The first volume of Re: Zero I honestly was a little annoyed with it. The way it was written, the descriptions and the characters. nothing really appealed to me. This volume though? It doesn’t even seem like it was written by the same person. It was such a shock. I can’t help but wonder what happened to the author between then and now.

In replace of that choppy, too anime-ish writing style the first time around we get a much more serious, emotionally driven story with fleshed out characters. There are a few dumb Subaru moments--he can’t help but continue those jackass like posses--but nothing unlike the last time where it diminished the entire story. Nothing is repeating itself, there are the right amount of ellipses and not every other line sounds cheesy or unneeded.

There are three things that are kept unfortunately.

First is the tendency to say the same sentence twice but in different ways. Rem will comment something snarky and then Subaru will say she’s being snarky. We get it, you don’t need to repeat yourself like that.

Secondly, everyone is yelling! All the time! Even when the moment should have been calm! So many exclamation points!

Thirdly, and this one had some improvements done to it but not enough that it didn't escape my notice, there are no descriptions as to what everyone is wearing. Rem, Ram and Rosweel all got descriptions, at least--that's more then what anyone got in the first light novel--but sometimes I never would have known what Emilia or Subaru were wearing if it wasn't for the drawings in the light novel.

All of that though I can get past. That five star ratting is there for a reason.

The second light novel volume of Re: Zero starts off a few days after the ending of the first volume with Subaru waking up in a mansion. As Subaru explores his new world--finally getting out of that hell hole he calls Return by Death--he comes across new characters.

Firstly Beatrice, you pessimistic charmer. Despite all the shit-talking she does I like her. Beneath all the bravado she gives off she is a kind person, although the way she does it is sort of round-about like.

Once Beatrice is done both physically and verbally abusing Subaru he’s greeted by the two main female characters that take up a good majority of this novel, Rem and Ram (my dyslexia is going to forever mix them up). Outside of the typical tropes they have, being twin maids and all, they are so thoroughly done in character that it made those sad, emotional moments with Subaru all the better. I know what's going to happen with these characters from watching the anime and I’m actually really happy that I did that. There are some really important emotional hints that you want to watch out for when it comes to them in the future novels. Most importantly the story of the Red Demon. All these little things that are woven in when it comes to Rem and Ram you won’t realize about until you’ve watched the anime or you’ve read on. The subtleties in their characterization was superbly done.

Moving on from the stars of that novel, Subaru recovers and has breakfast with the master of the house, Roswaal Mathers. I think that Roswaal is the one character I have the most problem with. His words are stretched out and he's so . . . cartoon-y that I can't take him seriously. Then that goddamn bathtub scene . . . ! I know that Roswaal is not someone to underestimate--he even got a few pages telling how he’s consorting with Ram and on what she thinks of Subaru. Not only is he secretive but he is the sponsor for Emilia’s candidacy to the throne.

Oh, did I forget to mention that?

This volume you find out what all that fuss about that pendent from the first volume is about.

Apparently Emilia is one of a few in the process of being chosen to become the next ruler of the kingdom. The explanation behind that is done so simply yet wonderfully that it really fleshes out the world Subaru finds himself in yet again. Another improvement over the first volume.

The thing though is that if Emilia is constantly being judged as a half-elf why is she a candidate anyway? Another thing that the future light novels will reveal.

What I like about her being a candidate is that despite not have a lot of free-time she tries to make time to talk with lesser spirits or even with Subaru, showcasing her kind nature (which failed the first time around because I thought she was just mean in the first volume). Emilia in her character is done much better and now I’m really starting to see why Subaru is falling for her. It's not that she’s just pretty but she is kind hearted. She even wanted to believe in Subaru when the odds were against him.

Understandably there is not enough space / time in the book to go over the other candidates competing with Emilia.
In replace we get something much better.

Subaru’s suffering.

Grab the popcorn.

If you thought that Subaru was done with his time-traveling pain-in-the-ass nightmare then you're wrong! We’re all so far off the mark because his suffering has gone up! He dies multiple times and is constantly finding himself back in the room he first woke up in at the estate. And each time he resets it messes a little more with his head.

The first time around, he didn’t even realized it happened. Slowly dawning on him that he died, he recoils from the defeat. He tries to redo everything the same as his first time around in the estate but with the second time around things change here and there. And then--

BAM! Dead again. He keeps dying late at night. Figuring out that he need to change his course of action, he keeps trying to do everything he can to make sure that he (and no one else in the manner, as he thinks that he can’t be the only one dying) makes it through the night. First time around he’s a butler. Second time he is yet again a butler and getting better at the job. Third time around things change. And then the fourth time around is the fucked up part (which makes it the best part). Fifth time is where the third volume starts after his suicide.

With each passing moment of his life renewing a little more of Subaru is taken away. He goes from trying to repeat things and make the best out of it, to having it all shatter and sending him into a deep depression. And despite knowing that he has formed relationships that others can’t remember, taking reassurance that he’s not alone, there’s a part of him that will always be on his own from now on.

Ah, that splendid suffering.

Doesn’t that make you want to read on? It ain’t the maids and their skimpy skirts that’s keeping you reading, don’t let your dick fool you. Its that mind altering madness that you want to eat up.

In this book we learn about the Kingdom Subaru's now living and the responsabilities Emilia has upon her shoulders; which leads to Emilia and the meaning of the badget she lost at the beginning. Roswaal, who's the one at charge of the mansion and a powerful user of magic. Beatrice, the cute little librarian with amazing power. And the maid twins, Ram and Rem, that apparently are like the Red and Blue Demons from the fairy tales.

Just like the first novel, we get to laugh, to answer a few questions (though, we make some more), and of couse, Subaru gets killed again.

He learns that he's like in some kind of Death Loop, like if it was a videogame. Who dragged him into that world? We just don't know. Also, that his 'magic' is somehow the Dark. He stinks like the Witch of Jealousy that's why he attracts bad things. Aaaand he can't tell anyone about the Death Loops.

But the most important thing, I think, it's that he realizes he likes Emilia and everyone at the mansion, even though every time he gets killed, they forget about him. His motto is 'I won't forget them even if they do' and that itself... it's a big deal.

I really think he's a great character despite everyone's thoughts. I mean, if I were him, I wouldn't even know what to do. Of course nobody wants to die, but if you can protect someone by doing that, well, maybe... and just maybe... your life wasn't a waste after all.

So my opinion of volue wasn't spectacular... and I get his with more than 50% of volume 2 being a total drag. Nothing interesting going on, no reason to give a plate of fetid dingo's kidneys about anyone, especially Rem and Ram (why are they so popular?). One the time loop actually begins the story becomes enough more interesting to bring this up from the 2-stars I was going to give it to 3. Sadly, it can't get past that because even with the loops what happens isn't as interesting. And then it ends on a cliff hanger. Sure, cliff hangers aren't bad in and of themselves, but to do it in a book that for me left me wondering if I should bother with the series, dropping a cliff hanger just makes me wonder more.

Okay, that all sounds rather negative and I suppose it is. I suppose it is because I really wanted to like Re:Zero. I enjoy time travel/loop stories for the most part, but once again I am left wondering who to care about. Emliia is about the only one who interests me at all thus far. Well, with the quarantine going on I may have little else to pick from for a bit. So who knows, maybe volume 3 will be headed my way.

Verdict: Sadly, unless you have a strong attachment to these characters it really hasn't been worth the time.

So, I ended up getting pretty hooked on this book, it was still slightly slowgoing, but the character development and plot starts kicking into a bit of a higher gear hear so it was fun to go through. I'm starting to get used to the author's style now, and the main character is very goofy, which can be quite fun at times.
Still a few issues with the description's of characters, but they're really not that major.

For those who are interested in watching my Youtube review, please click on Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- Vol. 2. If you don't want the Youtube review, then just keep reading.

All right, everyone! Prepare to have your mind thoroughly fucked!

I just finished reading RE:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- volume 2, and if you thought volume 1 was screwed up, then this one is going to make your sorry ass run for the hills.

Volume 2 starts off in what I can only assume is several days after volume 1. Natsuki Subaru has finally left the time loop that he was stuck in. I guess the writing God, Tappe Nagatsuki finally decided to take pity on Subaru's poor soul and let him pass onto the next stage—or not. After all, more suffering is all that awaits Subaru in this volume.

The first thing that this volume does is introduce several new characters. Beatrice, the loli guardian to the Mathers family's forbidden archive of super secret magical books. We don't learn a whole lot about her despite how often she appears, but we are given several huge hints that there's more to her than meets the eye. Of course, given that she's a blonde loli, I'm expecting some kind of immortal vampire back story, or something.

Our next character introduction is Roswaal Mathers, a noble who owns the estate that Subaru has found himself in, a mage of unrivaled power, and Emilia's sponsor.

Wait. What? Sponsor?

Yeah, so, apparently, Emilia is actually one of several candidates in line for the throne of Lugunica. Surprised? Well, maybe if you watched the anime you aren't, but if you haven't—surprise! Emilia might become queen. I find it kind of interesting that Emilia is one of several candidates who could become the ruler of a nation, and I know that's going to become an important part of the story in later volumes, but for now it's just a side note.

The main focus of this volume comes from the introduction of the two maids: Rem and Ram. Rem and Ram are twins—maid twins. You do know what that means, right?

If you answered: a chance to indulge in your maid fetish, then you are correct! I'm pretty sure there are many people out there who are sitting on their beds, the latest volume of RE:Zero in their lap, fapping to Rem and Ram right now.

Now that we've gotten our character introductions out of the way, let's focus on what happens during this volume. It starts off with Subaru waking up in a mansion that he's never seen before, meeting with Emilia once again, and becoming a butler of the Mathers house. Why a butler? Naturally, it's so he can spend time with the hot twin maids to stimulate his imagination and fap to them every night.

Actually, I feel like he decided to become a butler because he wanted to be close to Emilia, but he didn't want to be a freeloader. It's too bad Emilia is busy learning to become a ruler. That said, I do appreciate how Emilia still makes time to speak with him despite being so busy. Anyway, Subaru spends his days learning the ins and outs of being a butler, enjoying the time he spends being verbally abused by Rem and Ram, and getting a promise out of Emilia to go on a date with him.

And then he dies.

What makes this death so interesting isn't that he died, but that he didn't even realize he died until after it had already happened. He woke up in the bed that he'd been in when he first arrived at the estate, the wounds he gained during his time as a butler gone, and Rem and Ram standing at the edge of the bed just like they had when he woke up at the beginning of this time loop. In the last volume, Subaru at least knew his killer, that crazy psychopath who likes carving out people's bowels. This time, he died and doesn't know the whos, hows, or the whys.

His second time around, Subaru strives to figure out how he died by trying to do the same things in this second loop that he did in the first. It ends in failure, mostly. I mean, he did discover that his death the first time around was caused by a curse. Unfortunately, he died during this second loop, but this time he was physically killed by someone. Needless to say, the suffering isn't going away any time soon.

I think what made this volume better than the previous one was how it didn't feel as redundant. In volume 1, Subaru's dialogue is redundant and over the top. Of course, it is still redundant and over the top in volume 2, but I feel like it's somehow become charming instead of detracting. Maybe because Subaru suffers a lot more in this. Who can say?

What really makes this volume stand out, however, is Subaru's internal struggle. He tries so hard in this volume, only for all of his expectations to be betrayed, and for him to betray both himself and Emilia, the girl he's been fawning over. We're also given a few clues about how Subaru might have come to this world. There's nothing truly definite yet, but several times, it's mentioned by different characters that Subaru has “the stench of the witch on him.” In volume 1, we learn that the “witch” refers to Satella, who is known as the Witch of Jealousy. While we don't learn anything concrete in this volume, it's fairly clear that Satella is somehow involved with Subaru's presence in this world.

This volume offers a lot more substance, a lot more dilemmas, and a lot more suffering than the previous one. If you want what's probably the most original take on a “sent to another world” light novel series, then I would highly recommend buying RE:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- volume 2. You won't regret it.

Good story but it's brought down by a dearth of dialogue tags. A lot of the time, I didn't know who was speaking. You have to pay attention to the way each character talks, but sometimes their speech resembled one another so I wasn't sure.

Vol.2 of this novel includes Subaru finally making his way to another checkpoint. That checkpoint is a mansion. In the mansion he meets a couple of people including two maids, the mansion owner, and a librarian? In all of this there remains once question, will Subaru be able to make it to the next checkpoint and save Emilia?

My favorite character is Rem. A reason why my favorite character is Rem is because of how caring she is of her sister and how much she praises her sister. Another reason why Rem is my favorite character is because of how hard working she is.

I like the plot of the story because it is unique how the main character knows he is in an alternate world and tries to do all he can to make his way through the alternate world. The story is like no other I have read and I have not ever been more attached to a story like this one. It has diverse characters.

I would love to read this book again sometime.

This second one was way better than the first book, the characters and plot felt well written and the suspense / intrigue was more exiting, we finally get a little information about the world and some supernatural aspects of life there. As I read it I was wondering what would have happened if Subaru had read the Gulliver's Travels. He’s detective abilities still are shameful and his tendency to look at it as an RPG gets him killed more than once.

This is less so a review of the novel itself but more of a reflection on how reading it relates to the direction of my life.

After what has likely been more than a year I have finally picked up the light novel again (nevermind the fact that I read almost the whole of arc 5 before ><) and what really struck me this time was how blatant Subaru's self hatred and frankly unhealthy behaviours are - however, in this series there is no semblance of "tragedy porn" or that feeling that the media is just a vehicle for an endless pit of misery. Rather, it very much feels like a part of a person's holistic journey both in terms of self improvement and in their growing relationships with other very complex characters. I guess as someone who has been caught up in his own world for so long this picture of growth means a lot - I can't even put my finger on the feelings it evokes or the thoughts that it should inspire but I'm realising that the books I read are simply part of my own journey in life; perhaps it is best that I leave these feelings unlabelled and my analyses unsaid, because those have meaning insofar as I experience than rather than because I need anyone else to validate them.

I'm thinking of doing a quick run-through of the anime after I have caught up to Vol 27, just to see whether the anime really stripped the novel of its depth or whether - as a young student - I simply lacked media literacy. To me, Subaru's optimism in spite of his immense anguish serves to establish him as a really inspiring figure :)

This is somewhat weird to describe, at least in a metatextual sense. I enjoyed the first volume well enough, and so purchased nos. 2 and 3, which together form a single arc. Months passed between buying these volumes and actually getting 'round to reading them. What finally pushed me, and this is the weird part, is that I broke under the weight of constantly seeing Rem figures produced while continuing the money-sink that is the anime-figure-collecting hobby, and eased the burden on myself by preordering a prize figure (!) of Rem in like an itassha racing flag-girl outfit based on Subaru's tracksuit, or something. The figure, cheap as it is, being a crane-prize, has a pretty okay butt, which doesn't exactly have much to do with reviewing this light novel, but whatever. So, moving on, I ended up preordering several more prize figures (they're like 2000 yen, so it's nothing to me, even if I feel stupid for preodering fucking prize figures) with the idea of a) reading the arc in which she's introduced in the novel, b) assuming I'll enjoy it enough to continue, and c) hoping Rem is okay enough as a character when I already quite enjoyed Emilia from the first novel.

My "research" (that is, actually reading this book) has born adequate fruit. Rem is alright. I think, actually, that this installment is more about Beatrice being a better character, but that's because there is quite some distance between Subaru and the maids, particularly after he starts dying. I would imagine the maids get more of a focus in Vol. 3, with Subaru having vowed to save them in his next life, so maybe it's semi-ironic that that volume has Betty on the cover.

It's still hard to truly enjoy Re:ZERO to the extent that I believe others enjoy the series, as Subaru still feels too much like Kazuma from KonoSuba. That is, he feels like a parody of an isekai protagonist, which I guess he kind of is, but I think the intent is to be "subversive" whereas in actuality it comes across as "par for the course," because I'm really only familiar with parody-isekai like the aforementioned KonoSuba or also Isekai Maou and No Game No Life. And I genuinely don't believe any isekai story will have half as good character development as the original Digimon Adventure anime, which luckily existed before the dark times, before SAO.

Subaru is a goofy dumbass most of the time, and it's hard for me to care. BUT... Tappei Nagatsuki does very well to highlight Subaru's fear of death. The best-written passages in this novel (as well-written as possible for the light-novel medium, especially after the horror of being translated into my beloved mother-tongue) are those when Subaru first wakes up after his Return by Death has kicked in, and the novel's tone takes a darker feel for a second, when even the violence and terror of the scenes of his death(s) don't often feel too weighty. I'm including under this umbrella the first time Subaru experiences the blackness that grips his heart when he tries to tell Emilia about Return by Death, which I thought was the best moment of the volume.

I'm hooked enough to continue reading, but it would be stupid not to since I already own Volume 3. At this rate, I'm quite sure my interest will remain long enough to purchase and read the third arc, after which I may as well continue onward (though I've been told to move to the web-novel translations for Arc 4 and on).

Nagatsuki also did well to establish this novel as its own thing while also being part one of two. Subaru ends the novel with the resolve to try to find out just what the hell is going on, and so Volume 3 is set up to be answers to Volume 2's questions. A decent way to divide things.

One complaint, which I feel will plague the series in the future: every chapter ends in Subaru dying, so it becomes predictable, to the point that looking at the table of contents and subconsciously noting the page numbers for new chapters would ruin the "surprise" of the event of any of Subaru's deaths. But I guess this is the novel's schtick.

As far as light novels go, there are few as imaginative and as complex in story telling as Re:Zero. It was hard to top a great first volume, but Tappei Nagatsuki actually pulled it off!

This is the first of two books that make up the "Mansion Arc". Subaru is stuck in a new loop, dying, repeating and finding out new details on each try. Same mechanic as the first book but with a key difference: as he lives through more than one day, he builds deeper relationships with the other characters... just to have them reset every single time. Add to that the fact that the story takes a turn towards darker concepts and his death experiences get proportionally more cruel. Not spoiling anything but this book marks the point in the story where Subaru actually starts taking his role seriously, and drops the playful carefree way in which he approached everything foreign.

The new characters are great, the duo Ram/Rem dialogues are super funny, Beatrice is annoying but her jabs at Subaru sometimes top Ram's, and Roswall is more mysterious than on the anime (as in he's still weird, but comes off as a puppet master).

And, you finally get a glimpse of what is happening with this world, who and what Emilia is what she is doing, why the crest from the first book is important and finally an introduction to the very important concept of the "Jealous Witch".

Fantastic improvement in storytelling and pacing, the story of Re:Zero reaches a brilliant continuation here that Tappei-Sensei gets almsot entirely perfect.

Some of my favourite characters of the series are introduced in this arc (I suppose) and they all treat Subaru(kun) the way he deserves.

One of the brilliant ways that this story works is how it gives you everything right at the start but you don't realise it until the end, Subaru's problems always come from his inability to be honest and let people in.

Just like the problems the other characters have similarly. And it is a masterstroke here in showing people who are genuinely good people who do things wrong for the right right reasons.

It's a fantastic read and I love this world even more now I'm reading the books as well as the anime adaptation.

Roll on Volume 3 and my love of the best Blueberry in the whole of the world who needs to be protected from all things shows her stuff. (yes, I am and I don't care. I love the girl)

It's not perfect, small bits here and there aren't needed in my view, the " -." sections used to fill the onomatopoeia used in Japanese for shocked sounds or gasps take a little getting used to, but that's a tiny gripe. It's a huge jump in the writing and story telling and as always, the art is spectacular.
