When the horrific death of her father leaves Jenna Banks an orphan just before her sixteenth birthday, she is plunged into the world of Hilltop Academy – a world where machine gun-toting Agents protect her from unseen forces and tracking down monsters is the norm. Yet even in this mysterious otherworld, Jenna discovers she has abilities above and beyond those of her fellow Hilltop students. Unfortunately for her, she’s not the only one to make this discovery. Another tragedy sees Jenna and her new friends transferred from England to the vast Academy base in Colorado. Watched constantly and unable to trust anyone but her closest friends, Jenna has to think on her feet, calling on all her natural cunning simply to survive. Then the surprise to end all surprises completely blows her world apart.
Fade is the story of Jenna, who is a fairly normal teenager whose entire world changes in the space of a day when she finds out that she's got some burgeoning powers to see... something. Then her only surviving parent dies in a horrible explosion and Jenna finds herself orphaned and then working out her grief and her new powers in a special academy for kids just like her.
Jenna can see creatures that are known as Faders, as they can turn invisible and fade through solid surfaces. People like Jenna are known as Trackers, and are trained to spot these Faders in public for a special branch of the military.
When one Fader in particular keeps hunting Jenna, she is transferred from England to the United States and from there, begins to find out just how strange her new powers are.
I quite liked Fade. I listened to the audiobook as it is much easier for me to take in large quantities of books at work. In this case, I listened to it in one sitting, both because it was quite enjoyable, and because it is only about seven hours long. ^_^
The book was a fairly standard YA Urban Fantasy. At least, it felt so to me. YA featuring a teenage character who finds out they have special powers and is then sent to a special academy to learn to use those special powers is hardly a new idea. This book even references its similarity to both Harry Potter and X-Men. It knows what it is. That said, I did find the idea of the Faders quite interesting and unique. I thought it was described in enough detail to really make it easy to imagine.
Jenna is a pretty easy character to root for. She's witty at times, and her banter with her other friends brought a grin to my face a couple of times. Like a lot of YA, this one doesn't feature a ton of sex or swearing, but nor does it noticeably hold those things back. Things that are rather gruesome do happen at times. The blurb eludes to a great surprise, and I'll admit that the surprise that it appears to elude to was not at all surprising to me, but was still brought on in an interesting way.
And hey, in the end, it surprised me after all. So, that was neat.
The narrator, Georgie Leonard did a great job here. This book has quite a lot of accents, spanning from many parts of the UK and into America, and she managed to make most of them sound really convincing, which made the whole book a good experience. I can say with near certainty that the narration made this book more entertaining than I would have found it had I read it instead.
So, all told, I thought that Fade was an interesting and engaging book with an interesting set of characters. I may yet investigate further into the series. Because I do not have enough audiobooks, obviously. ^_^
I received an advanced/review copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content and honesty of my review.
Let me begin this review by saying that this book took everything I thought I figured out about the story and completely flipped it upside down. There were so many twists and turns in this book that I’m surprised I didn’t get whiplash! Not only was it surprising and not at all what I expected, but it was written extremely well. Sometimes when I read twists in books, I can tell the author was trying just a little too hard to make it more interesting, but I didn’t feel that way here at all. E. G. Bateman has created a fantastic novel with incredible world-building, a fascinating story, and characters that felt real with unique and honest personalities.
Jenna is really put through the ringer in this novel. Her father dies, leaving her an orphan, and she has to go to this new world she previously knew nothing about, leaving her best friend behind. She has these new powers that she struggles to control and doesn’t fully understand, and then she discovers that those powers are unique to her alone. While she’s thankful for her new friends, she still feels alone. She misses her dad, she misses her best friend, and on top of it all, she’s a teenager navigating a new romance. To say her new life is complex is a grave understatement.
As the story progresses, Jenna finds things are not always what they seem–and “complicated” doesn’t even begin to cover her findings. To discover the truth, she and her new friends have to team up and take on challenges they never expected to face. At the heart of this story is a tremendous foundation of friendship, and these ties prove to be invaluable–particularly toward the end of the story.
There’s just a touch of romance and I’m hoping the next book explores this relationship further. 🙂
I greatly enjoyed this book. It kept me hooked and there were multiple times I had to lift my jaw off the floor as I read the plot twist. There’s one scene in particular that had me actually gasping out loud and saying, “NO WAY!” It’s not often that I’m caught so off-guard that I don’t see even a hint of it coming, but the author definitely got me. Such an awesome story and I honestly can’t wait to find out what happens next!
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys young adult paranormal/fantasy.

Amazing.... I just read this even if I started long time ago. It isn't books fault it was mine *must study* thing. I coudn't wait anymore so I have finished 98% in just one day. This is amazing, I read little intro novel and it helped me a lot to understand all this. I hope you find time for that book too. It is must read before this (in my opinion). So lets talk about this book. I thought Marcus was spy from begining bu it is not. He was evil. I hope he doesn't come back somehow. *ow I've just spoiled smth* I think Connor is great, he is so cute. I think I love him more than anyone. Jenn is amazing I just love how she always makes rational desicions. I hope nobody followed them. But before end big applause for Neil Banks! 👏 *okey I won't spoil more things* I truly recommend it to everyone! This is amazing new world and it deserves much more than just five stars...
An excellent book with an engrossing plot, interesting characters, and lots of mystery. Jenna, surprised by her emerging powers and her father's unexpected death, is sent to an academy, but is still hunted by evil faders, only to discover that everything she was told is wrong. A most enjoyable tale.
I am so excited by this first book in the Faders Trilogy! Full of plot twists and edge of your seat suspense! Just when I thought I knew where it was going, BAM it takes a hard right! I could not put it down and am so excited to start the next book in the series! Highly recommend!
This book was absolutely AMAZING! I don't know what I expected, but this wasn't it! So very glad that I read this and am willing to share the joy with anyone who will listen!! It's a definite awesome read with twists and turns!!
Fantastic, unique storyline!!! Just when you think you know what going on, BOOM, a twist that really throws you!! There is one scene that was wicked, but you'll have to read it to find out!!! A recommended read!!!
This first book in The Faders Trilogy is a captivating read with fresh ideas, fast paced action and great characters. Each book continues to develop the unique faders universe. I was hooked from the begginning and saddened to turn the last page. Waiting...waiting...waiting for book 4.
Fast paced, well written story that pulls you in from the first chapter. The characters are well developed. Unexpected plot twists that work. I’m onto the next book of this series and expecting to not get anything else done today. 😊
Very interesting and intriguing, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I also really enjoyed the author, E G Bateman's style of writing and wit. Now for book 2, The Network!!!
This book starts out with a simple enough premise.
There are Faders--non-human monsters, who can fade in an out of existence, walk through walls, and emit a yellow mist while doing so, and there are trackers--humans built with the special genetic ability to see faders and hunt them down.
But what if the enemy is not who you think it is? What if you've been lied to your entire life.
There were minor punctuation errors in this book (mainly missing or extra speech marks), and a few random capital letters where they shouldn't have been, but it was not enough to affect reading enjoyment.
I did wonder
This isn't a romance, although there are numerous romantic relationships mentioned throughout, so if that's what you're looking for, this might not work for you. It's definitely not the focus of the story.
This story is told primarily from first person perspective, although there are chapters, written in the third person, which are from other character's POVs.
I received a free copy for an honest review. The thing I liked most about this book was that I didn't see the "big" things coming. The little things are easy to spot and as for the rest, I can usually see it coming because it's obvious. I wasn't able to this time and I'm sooo happy about it. I liked Jenna as a main character because even though she didn't know what she was from the beginning and had to learn to cope with it, she didn't throw a hissy fit about it. She figured out how to use her powers and did something about it. Orla, Zoe, and Hannah are amazing partners in crime. I can't wait for more of this series.
This book is a good read and I quite enjoyed it. Much of the book is in the UK (Bit of a spoiler sorry) this made me a little confused but not very much. Also I think grammar rules are a bit different but nothing tremendous. Non of this impacts the reading experience too much. I very much enjoyed the countless twists in this book. They're awesome! Also the characters in general are really likeable and relatable. I love the uniqueness of the faders and their secret world apart of our own. Four stars for sure.
I won a copy of this book in a prize draw and at 62 years of age I’m probably not the target audience. However 50 years ago this is exactly the kind of story I devoured and I’m pleased to say my inner teenager wasn’t too far away. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Took me a little while to settle into it but there is a twist that takes the tale in a direction that I found more in line with my way of thinking. I’m off to buy the next instalment.
This was a good introduction book for a universe and series. The characters and locations were interesting and detailed. There was action, intrigue, surprises on who the good guys are in the story etc. It will be fun to see what the characters get into next. I recommend this book and look forward to future books in this universe.
I really enjoyed this book. I like the characters. I didn’t see any of the plot twist coming. This book is about a girl named Gena who is sent to a special Academy after she realizes she has special powers. The powers or not what they seem though.
This is a fascinating, unusual read. The characters are interesting and well developed and the plot twists had me guessing all the way. I did not see that coming resonated through the last third of the book. Definitely reading the next one!
I really enjoyed this opening adventure. Lots of action, good character development, and an entertaining premise. Can't wait to continue the story to find out what happens next.
It was a quick read, entertaining but not anything ground breaking. When I started I was afraid it was going to be full of the standard YA drama, but it wasn't.
Awesome! What a rollicking good ride. Action starts right away and never stops. Reminds me of Lindsay Buroker’s writing and I’m hooked. I got the audio for books 2 and 3 to slow me down! This is imaginative, riddled with humour despite the horrors of the storyline. (You only get a five star rating when I’ve read your book more than once, it it’s only a matter of time!).
