Geoff Todd is retired. Ok, so he was a soul collector. It’s still a job, right? And he retired though he still has one foot still in the magical world, so to speak. He had no idea when he picked a community to retire to that it would be thick with magical people. He’s mostly mortal, but he retains a little bit of magic. He also shares his home with an unusual cat. Clarence is a huge pain in his ass, but he’s been asked to keep an eye on him and they are slowly coming to terms with their co-habitation. Then there’s Sylive. Ah, Sylvie. Geoff really likes her, but he’s from the 1940s and is clueless about nearly all things modern. Including dating. That leaves Clarence to give him dating advice. What could go wrong? Scratch that.
This is a great quick read with lots of paranormal goodness, a talking smartass cat, other magical people and creatures, and a budding romance. Oh, and ghosts. Geoff and Sylvie’s first date does not go as he planned. Not in any way. But what did he expect when he’s surrounded by magic and sometimes mayhem? It’s been a couple of years since this story so I’m not sure if this series is going to continue, but I hope it does. I’m looking forward to more.

2020 bk 28. I had to stop reading Evan Evans - my sequel in the Death Retired Mysteries arrived. It didn't take long to read - These are a little more than a novella, but packed with fun (and terrifying) moments. In this one a sullen, angst driven teenagers destroys Geoff's date with Sylvie by demanding that they solve his murder and relieve his brother's belief that he had a hand in his younger brother's death. Along the way, the pair are assisted by Clarence (who has switched from porn to broadway musicals), Hector (who plucks a whisker from Clarence without being mauled), aid Belle (a tree nymph), and encounter a Kichkandi (they exist and they are nasty). This is a wild ride in the world of paranormal dating!

Geoff doesn't know much about dating in this century. I mean he was a soul collector so long he lost touch with humanity. Now he's back in the human world and wants to take his sexy neighbor out on a date. His companion, Clarence, is a ghost in a bobcat's body. Clarence is his link to modern living, i.e, he handles research, fashion and dating advice. He finally gets his date with Sylvie set up and it is hijacked by a ghost claiming to have been murdered. Well, even though he's retired he cannot pass up murder. As they search for answers they run across some dangerous specter's and could end up being the next casualty. I am loving this series and can't wait to see where they go next. I volunteered to read an advanced reader copy and am under no obligation to leave this review.

Geoff finally gets up the nerve to ask Sylvie for a date, but unfortunately for him, they are interrupted by a ghost, begging Geoff to help him move on. What is a retired soul collector to do but investigate this death? Maybe Sylvie can use her newly acquired family magic to help. A fun episode filled with creepiness and humor. I like how Geoff is trying to come to terms with his new humanity, in the face of today’s standards. And I adore Clarence, his supernatural bobcat roommate, who has an expanded role in this story. Can’t wait for more of their tales! Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing this book.

Awesome book! You have a retired death , Geoff,with a bobcat possessed by a ghost called Clarence. Now let’s add the romance factor Sylvie and we have a story brewing. Clarence and Geoff have an interesting relationship which involves negotiation and quite a bit of humor. Geoff is interested in Sylvie who has inherited some powers and is learning how to use them . Add in a sexy demon and a witch and you have a very interesting group of characters! Now let’s add in the mystery which Geoff and friends will solve with a few twists and you have an awesome book! I highly recommend this Bork and the series!

An excellent follow-up to the equally excellent first book. I just wish there were more of it.
Length aside, I adore the way the author builds different aspects of the world and mythology. This series is the perfect mix of grounded fantasy and fun, light-hearted amusement. It also contains two of my favourite things - the building of a group of characters that come together almost like family (granted, some of the characters are more peripheral to the group, but I love it anyway.) And a wide variety of different creatures and fantastical things.
Can't wait to read the next book in the series when it's released.

Geoff has finally asked Sylvie on a date in this book, but will a troubled teenage ghost sabotage their date? The gang is back on the track of helping another ghost find justice and peace in the 2nd book in this series. The further character development is wonderful, along with trying to figure out exactly what Tamara is. No witch could possibly have the powers she does, can they?
I just love these characters and these books. They are relatable and hilarious. Cozy mysteries are my favorite and the delightful twist of the paranormal in these makes them even better. If you haven't checked out Cate Lawley's book yet, you should.

Death, investigates, well, a death!
Geoff and Sylvie's first date gets hijacked by a ghost, an insistent ghost!
He needs to tell his brother he's not responsible for his death.
But when investigating where his car left the road, the duo soon realise that it wasn't an accident, it's murder!

Geoff and Sylvie's date turns paranormal!!! They make a great team in solving the case and helping out the ghost. I felt like the characters were even more developed and evolved as individuals as well as a couple. What a strange first date.

Death has a bone to pick
The second Death Retires book is as fascinating as the first one. This series has an unusual premise and reading the stories is a joy. As the series evolves, I can't wait the learn more about the characters.

April 6, 2021Preferred the first book to this one but still a good read. Managed to read it in just over an hour after being disturbed twice have downloaded the third book in the series so can't wait to get to start that too.

A fun story
Truth be told this felt a bit less of a book than the first one in the series but it moved the overarching story along nicely enough and I still enjoyed the characters so I'll rate it 4 stars. Probably more like a 3.7 stars but close enough.

This is a great fun read.
Geoff, a retired Death, is trying to go on a date with his pretty neighbour Sylvie. However, as always in these circumstances, life throws him a curve ball and suddenly there's a young, recently deceased ghost upsetting things and desperately asking Geoff to look into his death, which he says was murder.
Things go from bad to worse as Geoff takes Sylvie out for the evening and the young ghost starts to appear at awkward moments to plead his case and ask over and over for help.
Well where there are ghosts there is usually trouble and Geoff gets into all sorts of bother whilst trying his best to do what he feels is right without upsetting too many people. Things rarely turn out well when ghosts and murder are involved and this story doesn't disappoint in that respect.
Full of funny quips, a talking bobcat, a demon and lots of twists and turns, this story is full of enjoyment. I love the Death stories. They never fail to make me happy and satisfy my reading needs.
