Born in 1960 and raised on an overdose of television, NASA, and science fiction, Ryk Brown has worked as a cook, rock guitarist, stage lighting technician, and paramedic. He currently resides in Northern California with his wife, daughter, and cat. By day he fixes computers, and by night he creates stories.
Having spent his entire life "thinking stuff up", the advent of digital publishing has finally given him an excuse to write it all down and share it with others. ("Others" meaning someone other than his poor wife and daughter.)
A long-time fan of all things science and space, his goal is to write and publish an on-going series of sci-fi adventures. To be set in his own version of humanity's future, his characters will explore the vast reaches of the galaxy, and perhaps even the universe. He invites you all to join him on this journey through his vivid imagination.

This is book nine in the second half of the Frontier Series but is book 24 of the entire series. I have read this series from book one and have been hooked on it. I believe it is important to read this series in order as Brown picks up the story from where the last book ended.

I will keep this review brief as there is not a lot to say after twenty-three reviews on the topic. The book is a hair-raising nail bitter. Be prepared to read this book cover to cover without stopping. Believe me, you will not want to put the book down. Brown has the courage to kill off key characters in his stories which adds to the suspense of the story. The ending was rather abrupt this time, but I cannot wait for the next installment to come out. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with my favorite characters.

I read this as an audiobook downloaded from Audible. The book is ten hours eleven minutes. Jeffrey Kafer does an excellent job narrating the series. Kafer is an actor, voice-over actor and an award-winning audiobook narrator.

Ryk Brown's universe revolves around the exploits of Nathan Scott, a guy who's cheated death, ended empires and taken on far more than he's able to handle. But Scott knows how to marshal resources and alliances even when defeat is inevitable. He's tactically intelligent to a degree lost on those who underestimate his abilities. And the invaders who have derailed much of what he's built as far as free planets don't really know what they're up against. In "I Am Justice," the ninth in the Rogue Castes series Part 2, Scott and his derelict band of rebels appear to be on the mend. Scott's sister remains near death on the station Sanctuary, but there is hope she may be healed with a specialist who has a revolutionary form of treatment planned. And Jessica and Vlad take off on their own adventure to get extra fighters and wind up possibly signing up a new ally. But Brown isn't one to give his protagonist much of an edge. Scott and his ship, the Aurora, are constantly playing catchup. The enemy, the Dusahn, have superior technology and resources. They got the drop on the Alliance and have aspirations of creating a massive empire. They consider Scott a bump on that path. But scrappiness is at the heart of Scott's band. They pull off the impossible, even when the end looks like the logical conclusion.

Why do i like this book?

Having just finished reading, I find myself wondering why I like, not just this book, but the whole series? Strangely, I sometimes find the absence of the mundane human afflictions almost annoying. It may be that the author prefers to gloss over our human frailties as being beyond explanation but I do wish someone needed to dash for the bathroom occasionally.
Could I ask Ryk Brown to add a little more romance too? Action takes place in more ways than one and a little sexual encounter or two would spice things up in this story no end.
As to its readability and enjoyment, as is, I still love the all action sequences even if much of it is beyond my understanding. The technical aspects are bewildering but I feel, also necessary to the plot. All in all, you might've guessed I enjoy your books, Mr Brown. Even if nothing of your plots changes, I will still read them with suspense and no little excitement. Thank you.

Another great adventure by Ryk Brown. This story has more action than character development. None theses you do gain some insights to the motivations of each of the primary characters. There are some humorous sequences in this book. Ryk Brown has fun when a husband has to tell his wife he's been a secret agent and now their lives are in danger. Or when in the middle of a battle Vald gets angry at Nathan's demands that he fixes the ship faster. These are rare jewels in in an often dark novel where I was unsure if Brown was going to kill off a major character.

This book is not the place to start reading this series. However if you have kept up with the series, this story is a good addition to the series. I can't believe there have been 23 books in this space opera with more to come. I'm glad I'm in a library system that regularly buys the audio book version of this series. If you aren't you should get your library to buy all 23 audiobooks.

24 books in and this series is still as awesome as the first episode.
It still keeps me on the edge of my seat and this episode almost gave me an heart attack towards the end when I thought things were getting very, very bad.
Action packed as usual. Brilliant read! As usual it was annoying having to put the book down to do boring things such as going to work or sleep!
The characters keep being awesome. I am in love with Nathan and Vlad. Cam and Jess are two amazing women that I love and respect deeply. Loki and Josh... well, comedy is behind the corner when they are on the scene. And yes, I love Lucius too.

Thank you for this amazing saga that, btw is in the top 5 of my fave sci fi series of all time...
You created an amazing world with some great characters and you stories have kept me company for many hours.
I am very much looking forward book 10!

Thanks a lot again!!!

An outstanding episode that gets back to tactical space battles on top of the back-alley intrigue and in your face firefights! Don't hesitate to pick this one up!

The stakes continue to rise in this new episode of The Frontiers Saga. Side trips to gather influence and arms, new and improved tech on the way, sheer terror and narrow escapes all await you within this volume. Ryk Brown knocked this one out of the park.

If you're a follower of the series, you will most likely enjoy this book. If you haven't read from the start of the series, however, you will most likely not get the impact of certain events, nor understand the major goings-on. So, if you haven't, go back a read from the start. I actually suggest starting with Part 1 so that you can see the characters and universe evolve from start to finish.

I give this episode a solid 5 stars and call it a Well Rounded Read.

Nine books in but nothing happens that’s really beneficial for the good guys.

I enjoyed this book and I gave it a four because I don’t understand several things why does the author use the word wander instead of asked such as Jessica wondered Nathan wondered instead of Jessica asked or Nathan asked. The writing seems to be we bit unusual. Nothing really good seems to happen to Nathan and his crew, and why are you continuing to kill general tells his soldiers? They’re the baddest soldiers in the galaxy but you’re wiping them out. Hopefully Nathan was somebody in the book will find a station of hidden soldiers to boost their ranks. Besides those niggling questions I have I really enjoyed the series and I am eagerly awaiting the next book.

And now the fun begins. Captain Scott and the crew of the Aurora are in a new part of the cluster looking for allies and ships. The Dushan are about to attack his newest allies with a bold move against two planets at the same time, while hoping to draw the Aurora back to Takara to fight there. He decides to wait and see. He joins his new allies in defending both worlds when a Dushan Battle ship arrives suddenly and causes major damage to the Aurora. The fight between the two opposing forces is fast paced and action filled with the Aurora just barely surviving. I can hardly wait for the next book come out. An all around great read. Ryk Brown knows how to make the action alive.

Pretty good reading, but perhaps it's time to finish the series. While I love both series (I've read all the books from Frontier Sage and Part 2: Rogues Castes), I feel like the story is being stretched. Too many relatively minor situations that should take no more that 5 - 10% of the book take much much more. The last two books should have been one book. Fun read, but I wanted it to end (not just stop).

Nathan and the crew are at it again

Ep. #9 brings us to an exciting and hair raising time in the further saga of their lives. Mr. Brown please re-read your last two chapters, words misused and in Ch. 12 during the exchange between Telles and Mahtize you mistakenly call him Dusahn. Thanks again for a great tale.

Can't Go Wrong With a Ryk Brown Saga Book

When I found out about this book, I just had to get it.
After another sleep deprived night because of Ryk
, I can't wait for the next installment .
If you purchased and read prior Ryk Brown 's books, there is no need to talk about character development, etc. You get what you pay for, another great, exciting book, with characters you know. maybe love, who knows. Just a great read.

Still going great

Very good story if you have read all the preceding books. Vladimir plays a fairly bigger role here. Josh & Loki continue their struggles. This, like the others, has a good mix of action, drama, humor and many other adverbs. Highly recommend the series. I never give 5 stars because there is always room for improvement. Oh, the editing is superb. Especially for an e-book.

A mixture of family and fighting

This time round Nathan is primarily focused on his sister's well survival and her kids well being, it's everyone else that seems to be doing the fighting
Telles is being almost Spy like
Jessica is being, well Jessica
Cameron is holding it all together
As for Vlad, well as one of the elite soldiers says " he's bad ass"
It's a very good book story, the ending is uncertain until the last page, with a few surprises along the way

A welcome return to action

Some odd ideas in this one (the commander taking risks couldn't happen, however I can suspend disbelief and remind myself it is just a story!) although the plot does lurch forward after a little meandering and is set up for future episodes. Again we find that Ryk Brown can do excitement and action justice.

Another great installment of frontiers saga

This book was another great installment in the frontiers saga. If you have been following the story is progressed. If you have nit read the saga start from the beginning, and check it out. This author never fails to tell a good story, where you are invested in the outcome of the characters.

OUTSTAND

The entire series is absolutely nothing short of amazing. Once you think you've figured out where the story/plot is headed it throws you an unexpected curve. And Nathan is no longer the primary character in the series. To me General Yelled is amazing, he's moves around live a ghost. 👍 series.

Best space series

May Rik never stop writing this space series. It's my fav! It's a long one but he has kept me interested and I think it still has good growth potential. Don't watch much tv, I read. This is a winner. Professional writing, great world view & the best characters. Rik rocks!!

Another great entry in a series of great entries

This tome continues the tales of intrepid crew of freedom fighters in their efforts to free the Pentarus Cluster from the grips of the Dushan Empire. Captain Scott and his crew are forced to once again refresh the tree of liberty with that which nourishes it in hopes of a brighter future for all of mankind

Another absolutely FABULOUS read from Ryk.

It's quite rare to find any series that is able to sustain itself book after book. But this is a wonderfully character-driven series, with so many clearly defined characters... and we care about every one of them. These are human stories. Bravo.

A time of transition and introspection

Nathan and the Karusari have welcomed the Rogan System into their Alliance. Nathan's sister faces a dire prognosis. Jessica and Vlad run off on an attempt to obtain badly needed additions to the fleet's ships.
Adventures abound as major events result in changes that may leave deep wounds.

Anyone who chooses to begin reading this story at this point(book 9 of a 10 part) will be doing themselves a disservice. That said I have to heap praise on Ryk Brown for producing a gripping well paced and finely crafted space adventure of inspirational characters and nerve jangling action. I have in recent years become deeply dismayed at the very poor literary skills evident in the pulp sci-fi world, but this author has renewed my love of the genre with the Frontiers Saga. Thank you Ryk, long may you continue.

Such a great read.

One of my favorite SYFY sagas. When you read this saga from the beginning, it is easy to invest yourself in the characters. They become like family. Just an enjoyable read.

Love this series. Lots of action throughout.
Now I can't wait for the next one. Vlad showed what a bad ass he is in this one.
You know Ryk, it is time for Nathan and Jessica to get together. You know what I mean??

Deja vu

I am a huge fan of this series and feel it is one of the best series out there. Although I felt like I was watching a new star wars with this one. The final battle scene could of been a direct rewrite of an earlier book.

One problem

The only problem I have with this series is a book is supposed to last two to three weeks but I can't keep my hands off it. Next thing I know is that I am looking for a new book. So I wish Ryk would write faster.

Step by step deeper we go

Now the battle joins again close at hand. Our main characters are in the thick of it, of course. But then the General moves the intrigue off the charts. Wow. And it ends too soon, again. I love it.
