Maison: Parisian Chic at Home

Rate this book
A duo of high-profile tastemakers invite readers inside fifteen homes that are infused with the blend of vintage and contemporary style that is the essence of Parisian chic.

Style icon Ines de la Fressange and globe-trotting artist Marin Montagut share a uniquely Parisian sensibility for interiors that combine a variety of design traditions into a harmonious living space.

With extensive photographs, watercolor illustrations, mood boards, color palettes, and practical advice on the indispensable objects that personalize each maison, this exquisite volume is rich in inspiration for creating Parisian chic at home.

Natural materials—wood, wicker, bamboo, cotton, and linen—create warmth and personality. Vintage suitcases, vegetable crates, and jewel-toned pharmaceutical jars transform into charming storage containers. Embroidered cushions, terrariums, and fresh flowers enliven a room with pops of color. Collages, original art, or humble objects displayed in a series add a signature style to each residence.

The authors take readers inside fifteen Parisian apartments—including their own—that demonstrate how to imbue a home with a sense of well-being through a mix of vintage and contemporary styles. Each owner is passionate about home decor—whether in a studio, loft, or duplex—and they continually evolve their interior with new treasures uncovered in flea markets, on their travels, at design fairs, or in artisanal workshops.

I'm never really sure how to rate an interior decor book . . . do I base my rating on my pleasure at looking at it, or how useful I think it will be for me?

This book is arranged like a mood board - with photographs of interior decor punctuated by lots of images and ideas to borrow from. The 'Get the Look' sections feature water colours and a font that looks like hand-writing - a quirky touch which makes the book seem more personal and more reflective of its co-authors Ines de la Fressange and Marin Montagut. The Parisian apartments/style do vary, but they all share a common theme in terms of favouring personal collections, vintage bits and pieces, and an eclectic mixing-up of eras/styles. All of the homes have a strong and artistic presence, but it's not an overly 'designed' look at all. There is also a lot of artful clutter; maybe not for the Kondo-obsessed. I found it very appealing.

I have earmarked a few ideas to borrow, but mostly I have enjoyed reading and gazing and imagining a life in Paris. Definitely a keeper.

Unfortunately lacking in diversity. Could have been the same home through the entire book. If this is your style (the cover picture for instance,) you’ll love it.

If you want an example of a truly excellent interior design book, this one should be your bible. Not only does it explore Parisian Chic, it also offers a variety of color schemes, patterns and breakdowns of what makes each living space unique, and offers tips for DIYing a replica for your own space. I love the mix of photography, watercolor drawings, and various swatches mixed in throughout the pages. This book is an amazing reference for anyone who loves Parisian style, seeks to replicate that style in their own home, or for writers looking to explore interior spaces in France. Merci beaucoup, Inès!

Another beautifully compiled house design book. This one managed to make me feel that each home had an achievable look. It also had such heart. Each home seem to be unique and to reflect each owner's self. This was not a catalogue cut out decorating book.

The best interior design book that encompasses Parisian style that I’ve come across. I love how it gives you a list of items to search for in flea markets to emulate the look of each home. Each profile is a reflection of the owner. It features real homes that feel lived in. If you are a fan of Apartment Therapy, you will be a fan of this! I’m going to frame the dust cover—when you open it the inside features a beautiful mood board illustration.

A fun book to leaf through. The homes are all charming, heavily cluttered yet in that very unfussy Parisian way. (You can see everyone frequents the brocantes!) There's a beautiful patina on everything, and all the chairs look uncomfortable. As with Paris itself, I enjoyed visiting but everything is SO Parisian that it doesn't feel transferable to my space/life!

I wish they wouldn’t simply refer to things as “ethnic”.

Profiles of various couples/families & their homes in Paris, including the authors’. Emphasis very much on “it’s OK to own stuff”, mixing styles/eras, collecting what is personal to you, to make your home a reflection of you & your life. One touch I did like was the “mood board”-style spreads accompanying each profile.

I liked this book very much. It was full of ideas for small charming spaces with lots of windows, my favorite kind of space! I have at least 8 tabs noted for ideas I want to consider and investigate.

Interestingly, I enjoyed the text of this book better than the photographs of the apartments highlighted. Many of the interiors were cluttered and not cozy at all but the descriptions of the inhabitants and their style were fantastic.

Beautiful interiors photography, but felt like impractical interior design for anyone with children or pets (even though people featured in the book do have both!). I don’t think I have a room full of stacked suitcases in my immediate decor future.
