To make matters worse, her own people forbid her from becoming a vampire’s mate. They aren’t sure what Henry’s bite will do to her and want her focused on her original mission: tracking down the vampires behind a ruthless movement to enslave mortals.

Against these odds, Cerissa must find a way to bond with the man who holds her heart, and do so without paying the ultimate price – the loss of her wings forever...

After reading Dark Wine at Midnight, I had many questions. Questions, which I eagerly wanted answers for, and so I as happy to receive a copy Dark Wine at Sunset for review. Unfortunately, because of the many books vying for my attention, I did not get around to reading it until now. My only regret is my waiting so long to pick up this book.

I enjoyed this installment a lot. Filled with suspense and twists that kept me guessing throughout the story. A few humorous scenes had me grinning from ear to ear. Barwin created a perfect blend of suspense, mystery, romance and humor resulting in an addictive and enjoyable tale.

Dark Wine at Sunrise picked up immediately, from where book one left off. I got the answers I sought from the questions which arose in book one. However, there are still more questions that I needed answers for as the danger has not passed and Henry and Cerissa will have bigger obstacles to overcome. Cerrisa is still seeking investors to invest in her lab and she is committed to completing her assignment, which involved uncovering the mastermind behind the underground vampire group. Meanwhile she tries to keep her relationship with Henry secret from her people.

In this installment, I learnt more about Henry and Cerissa. Henry is a centuries old vampire. His sire refuses to relinquish her hold over him. Her actions created problems for him in both his professional and personal life. She was Henry’s weakness and not in a good way.

I gained insight into Cerissa and her people, the Lux. I loved Cerissa. I found her to be strong willed, smart, brave, protective, caring and funny.

After meeting her people, I understood her need to do things outside of the laws they created to keep their people in check. I admired her bravery in that regard.

Henry and Cerissa’s relationship has grown. However, they still had obstacles to overcome. One being Cerissa’s fear of rejection on Henry’s part if she revealed her true form to him. In addition, secrets from Henry’s past, posed a threat. Eventually, they opened up to each other. I am still laughing at Henry’s reaction when he discovered Cerissa’s true form.

The supporting characters made things interesting. There is Rolf, Henry’s business partner and deputy mayor. I found him to be an unlikeable character. I did not trust him and was suspicious of him. Then we have Tig the Chief of Police. A former assassin and a tough as nails female vampire. She is not one to give up, which was clear in her determination to solve the mystery of who tried to kill Henry. She had her work cut out for her. Aside from solving the assassination plot, she had to stop a serial killer was targeting both mortals and vampires. As the story progressed, the connection between the cases as well as Cerissa’s became clear.

I loved the world the author created. Vampires mating with mortals, but not allowed to turn them until they were centuries old. Silver and sunlight were their enemies. There was vampire who was priest, who residents, both vampires and mortals go to seek absolution and counselling when the need arise.

Conclusion/Recommendation
Dark Wine at Sunrise kept me glued to the pages, with its intense and suspenseful storyline and interesting characters. Looking forward to the next book Dark Wine at Dusk

"...with your itty-bitty...little bat...fangs."

May Contain Spoilers

Thoughts

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review; thank you for the opportunity to read and review this novel. This in no way sways my review or opinion of the novel. Due to this being a review of the sequel, this review may contain spoilers.
Back in the early months of 2017, author Jenna Barwin reached out and asked me to review the first novel in her supernatural adult literature series called Dark Wine at Midnight. I was ecstatic, being a new blogger and all, that an author would want my opinion on her novel. Balanced with a blend of sultry scenes and a grand mystery to solve, Dark Wine at Midnight was impossible to put down.

Afterwards, I became a member of Jenna Barwin's ARC Team, which presented me the great privilege of having an ARC of her grand sequel, Dark Wine at Sunrise.  Breathtakingly seductive and intensely nerve-wracking, Dark Wine at Sunrise is a tremendous addition to the Hill Vampire series.

Story | Content

The novel starts almost immediately after the events of the prequel, revealing to readers the aftermath that came of those intense final chapters instantly. In comparison to it's predecessor, Dark Wine at Sunrise draws readers into a multitude of events occurring within and around the Sierra Escondida community. The killer(s) from the first novel are still unknown and creating havoc, a divide is brewing between the humans and the vampires due to invisible forces, the Lux grow impatient with Cerissa's lack of information retrieval and blindness to her original goals...and this is ALL happening as Cerissa and Henry face other trials as they begin advancing in their relationship.

...talk about a lot of mini plots, eh?

To my delight, Dark Wine at Sunrise provides readers with an abundance of answers than the first novel did. The revelations regarding the Lux in particular made the story much more enjoyable, for Barwin provides enough information to garner some idea of what they truly are without completely giving away all the answers. Of course, Barwin can't provide us answers to ALL of the secrets within the novel...but where would the fun in that be?

The "erotic" scenes were rather tasteful, providing enough heat throughout the story without driving away from the main plotline. Again, Barwin successfully curves the desires of the readers and makes them feel the desire that's portrayed by the characters -- this includes both the sexual and non-sexual aspects of the book.

The content illustrated in Dark Wine at Sunrise is horrifically dark and heart-wrenching, yet full of electrifying passion and "weak-in-the-knees" sensuality.

Characters | Character Development

Between the first and second novel, the main and secondary characters remain primarily the same; there are few additions to the novel, which I found enjoyable since it allowed Barwin to focus more on the already known characters.

Dr. Cerissa Patel, our main heroine, grows far more rebellious and strong than she appears in the prequel. Willing to stand up for her morals even at the cost of her life, Cerissa takes further steps away from "obeying" and starts to "defy" those who confine her to one way of life. Though I love the strong and independent elements of her character, it was wonderful to see her more sensitive and emotional side as she begins to grow closer to Henry and creates stronger bonds with others in the community.

Henry Bautista's character seems to constantly be playing a game of tug-o-war; from progressive to possessive, Henry struggles between the ideals of the world he was raised in and that of the contemporary world. With Cerissa's aid, Henry gradually loosens the old ways and sees the beauty of a more equal society that allows those who have been historically silenced to finally have a voice. He's a rather unique character to focus on, since part of you wants to strangle him while the other wants to care for him.

There are a number of other very enjoyable characters that have immense character development throughout the novel. If you are looking to read something that focuses not only on a multitude of plot lines but also characters WITHOUT going overboard, this may be the next best read for you.

Language

Barwin's tasteful and tactful writing style is what draws this novel home; from eerie and tense to seductive and alluring, Barwin has a knack for knowing how to balance all the different moods displayed in the story through her incredible eye on word choice and phrasing. The serious and more dangerous parts make you feel anxious, having this unstoppable need to finish the book to know the answers.

Where I find Barwin excels is the erotic parts of the novel -- I never thought I'd see the day that I would be not only reviewing but praising an erotic writing style. Barwin uses playful and vivid imagery during these scenes, yet knows exactly what word choices make the story more passionate and utterly captivating. Rather than sounding "dirty" or "obscured", these scenes feel real and powerful and stunning. If you're a very vivid and emotional reader...I suggest reading these parts ALONE.

Overall

Barwin's Dark Wine at Sunrise is an extraordinary read that leaves readers the desire for more; the mix of mystery and action with a taste of playful yet steamy  intimate scenes gives readers an array of moods and tones to explore throughout the novel. Though the first part of the novel was a tad slow, the slowness was a necessity and the rest of the novel made up for it. The sparks of truth revealed about Cerissa, Henry, and other characters connected to the vampire community will leave readers in awe. Is Barwin's Dark Wine at Sunrise on your 2018 TBR list?

‘An intoxicating novel, packed full of thrills and spills. I loved it!’ A ‘Wishing Shelf’ Book Review

REVIEW
Dark Wine at Sunrise is the follow-up novel to the very successful Dark Wine at Midnight. Very much a paranormal romance, the first book follows Cerissa, a scientist, who works for the Lux. She has been assigned to a vampire town called The Hill to determine if they are planning to return to the old ways and overrun mankind. The first book is a fast-paced, gripping adventure with strong elements of mystery and a hefty dollop of forbidden romance. But, for all that, it ends with a cliffhanger and, I felt, lacked ‘POW!’ Thankfully, Dark Wine at Sunset picks up where Midnight left off, and, trust me, it’s even better than the first.
Plot
The central premise is well-thought out and the characters are interesting and well-defined. There is plenty of pace, particularly towards the end, and the author has littered her story with an array of twists and turns. I loved this line from the blurb: Research scientist Cerissa Patel has only one desire: to feel her lover’s fangs slip into her neck. Says it all really! Atmospheric and sexy.
Writing Style
For the most part, I enjoyed this author’s writing style. She is very capable at describing setting and characters but without being overly flowery. The author’s no Hemmingway but that’s okay; often, with fantasy adventure, if the writing style is too complex, it kills the pacing of the story. Well, that’s not a problem here. The pacing is excellent, although, as in the first book, it needs a chapter or two to get going.
The author is also confident with ‘speech’ with plenty of ‘showing’ and not ‘telling’, a good sign of a confident author. Finally, the author is not scared to keep a sentence short and simple where it’s needed; and, by doing so, helping to improve the pacing where speed is needed.
Characters
The characters (I liked Henry the best), as with the fantasy world, are vividly constructed, and the author works well with speech, using it to develop the characters and the story all the way up to the exciting end. The chemistry between Henry and Cerissa is kept high; intoxicatingly so. In fact, the author seems most comfortable when working with her two stars.
To Sum Up
So, who would I recommend this novel to? Well, anybody who enjoyed Twilight will probably enjoy this. Although, saying that, Twilight is for YA; this is not. The sex and the killings – in fact, the dark, almost chilling atmosphere of this book is not for a thirteen year old. However, if you enjoyed Twilight when you were thirteen but that was, say, six years ago, then, yes, this is for you. Just darker – cooler too, and, to be honest, better written. Twilight was so slow, sooooooo romantic! Lots of interesting stuff happens in Sunset; Twilight was like watching grass grow. Sorry, I’m rambling. If you enjoy falling into a fascinating paranormal world; if you enjoy suspense; and, if you enjoy vampire romance, you will love this. In Jenna Barwin’s world, evil is so evil, it’ll creep you out. But, of course, if you enjoy a good vampire novel, that is probably what you want.
Enjoy!

Dark Wine at Sunrise

I have been waiting for this book to be released. I wanted to know how Cerissa and Henry were. Will he survive his injuries, will they be allowed to be together. Will Cerissa be forced to leave the community? The first book in this series had me hooked.

Cerissa, still looking for investors into the lab but needing to know how Henry is. Henry, under house arrest and not able to see Cerissa. Both waiting on the Council’s decision!

Jenna wove a very interesting plot, one of suspense, twists, love and laughter. “with your itty-bitty...little bat...fangs.” Yeah, I had a giggle but you would need to read the book to understand the whole sentence! The way the futuristic medical instruments worked on her friend. The human feelings Carissa felt and how she dealt with such an important decision knowing what could happen for going against Lux rules! All well thought through and written book.

Can’t Waite for the next instalment!

Awesome, engaging, paranormal romance mystery
Book was well written and had great mix of suspense, seduction and paranormal elements. I was fully absorbed in the book to the very end. You get grabbed right from the beginning with the vampire council members wanting to punish one of their own resident vampires. This book is book two of a continuing story, if you did not read the first one the author did a good job of describing what is going on and who the characters are. I love the main characters, Cerissa and Henry, both are strong and independent with just the right amount of heat between them. Henry seems to still be in danger so they have to protect him, but also must try to figure out how to be together while still trying to figure out who is behind the would-be assassin. It does not help their relationship with the added pressure of internal politics from both Henry and Cerissa’s communities.
This is a full length book with lots of strong detailed characters and background, and an awesome plot that keeps you guessing to the end. This books does have an ending, but it is not the end of the story, I am eagerly awaiting book 3. I voluntarily reviewed an arc from the author.

Best Time for Dark Wine is at Sunrise
(Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of the book, decided to read it and provide my honest review.) Dark Wine at Sunrise (A Hill Vampire Novel Book 2) by Jenna Barwin is a magnificent piece of writing. Since I did read Dark Wine at Sunset, I was eager to re-engage and continue with the mystery-thriller. My appetite was already wet from Book One so I settled in ready for a high expectation read. What will happen to try and solve the murder and attacks that occurred in Book One? How will the plot evolve to dig deeper and by doing so what will be discovered? All these questions before I started reading. The author’s World and Character building in addition to the written word, the dialogue is beyond breathtaking which as a reader successfully pulls you into the storyline immediately. As the storyline, plot, and dialogue align in harmony a dynamic all-engulfing experience occurs where you no longer remain a passive reader. At the end of book one I had questions that I felt could have helped the reader understand more of the “world” some of the characters were from. Specifically, what is the Lux or the Lux Enclave? The Protectorate? Those questions are answered throughout the storyline in book two and not in obvious ways. If there was a 6th Star to give I would, but 5 Stars it is for this outstanding and exhausting yet exhilarating read. Dark Wine at Sunset continues the story of intrigue, false personas, espionage and deep boundless love. MY RECOMMENDATION: A Must Read. –Tex.

4.5 Stars.

It had been a little over a year since I read Dark Wine at Midnight, so I was worried I would get lost with Dark Wine at Sunrise. Those worries were quickly staked! This is a brilliant sequel that builds on Jenna’s universe while providing just the right number of nods to the first book so that everything makes sense. I dare say you could even read this novel without reading the first book, and still enjoy it (though you’d miss out on the first book, and that’s a great read too).

Without the world building to do, Sunrise hits the ground running. It also builds great chemistry between Cerissa and Henry. They are equal parts lustful, caring, playful, and brave. California wine country makes for a great backdrop to this tale of blood, Lux, and Vampires, yet the stakes (!) feel substantial and worth caring about, especially near the end when the pieces of the mystery puzzle start to fall into place.

The mystery and the romance deepen with Dark Wine.
Each time I thought I had a proper suspect a new twist was introduced. Between the suspense of trying to figure out who was behind the Cutter and who was leading the movement to the entangled romance of Henry and Cerissa - I felt like I was imploding. With every answer, I found it seemed I was presented with a new question.

Sunrise picks up pretty much right where we left off.
The council is preparing to sentence Henry for crimes against the community. With Rolf feeding the flames of contention against Cerissa the Hill's council may be blinded to true objectivity and fairness when it comes to his sentencing.

The pieces of the puzzle are still not fitting properly. With the investigation into the attempted murders at a standstill and their assassin still in a comma, Tig is feeling the pressure to provide a resolution.
I have to say I really enjoyed the way Tig took control this time. The council is hampering her investigation. A couple of the older members are so quick to shut down her ideas and to gloss over the truth it led me to wonder why? But when their decisions bring the danger to her front door she has had enough. I wouldn't want to be in her line of sight at the moment.

As things between Henry and Cerissa become more 'permanent ' Hard choices must be made and the secrets they feel the need to hide from each other become dangerous burdens.
Can they find a middle ground?
Will Henry accept Cerissas true form?
There are so many negatives against them before they even start.

The pieces start to fall into place for Tig and Jayden as they slowly close in on the killer. But the facts just aren't adding up fast enough.

This ends on a happy for now. We do get to meet the Lux council and I have to say I'm not impressed. Like the older vampires, it's time for a reality check that also includes a little look at the power structure. Though I did like the varying beliefs that Ari presented to Henry with regards to the Lux. Pretty interesting to ponder upon.

If you enjoy your romances with the edge of a thriller and a touch of mystery then this is a series for you.
The unique world building and well-developed characters round out a complex story line with intricate secondary plot lines.
I need book three now! Please.

An amazing follow-up to the first book in this series "Dark Wine at Midnight!" I was impatiently waiting for this book because I loved the first one so much and I was hoping it would be as well written as the first, and Ms. Barwin did not disappoint! If you like a well written paranormal adventure with a twist, this book is for you!! I'm now impatiently waiting for the next book in the series, it can't get here soon enough for me. I highly recommend this book to anyone who even barely likes a hint of paranormal, even if they dont, this series will surprise and convert them to this genre.Dark Wine at Sunrise

"Dark Wine at Sunrise" was an amazing follow up to the first book "Dark Wine at Midnight". This book was well written you will become completely captivated and engaged in the story. Cerissa and Henry, are both strong and independent characters. Cerissa is still trying to get investors for the lab. Henry has been put under house arrest making it so him in Cerissa are unable to see each other. They must wait on the counsels decision. This book had mystery, suspense, action, hate and love. A great read that kept my interest from beginning to end. I voluntarily received an advance arc copy for an honest review.

Dark Wine at Sunrise is the second installment in A Hill Vampire Series. As in Book 1 there is A LOT going on, so I would definitely recommend reading Book 1 first! Even though I know what was happening from the end of the first book, I felt like I was still slogging through the beginning of this book. And I truly enjoyed this world that Ms Barwin has introduced to us! It, honestly, took me awhile to get into this installment - the start feeling like a chore to read. Maybe that was just me. But suddenly then intrigue grew and I couldn't help but be, once, again, involved and riveted to all the happenings on The Hill.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review

OMG! This book was so good! Its a must read, but book 1 needs to be read in order to follow! Cerissa and Henry are amazing together, the only thing stopping them from being remarkable is all the secrets they both keep. This book continues off of where book 1 ends and let's you get to know the characters more. You can tell a lot of people are keeping secrets and with the threat that everyone is facing, everyone is a suspect! I enjoyed this book so much and I can't wait to continue this series! Its fast pace and will keep you on the edge of your seat. Jenna Barwin your amazing! I look forward to reading more!

I voluntarily agreed to read this book and this is my honest review!

Have book three ready to go when you finish this second one -- it is terrific. The characters and story are woven together perfectly. It has everything -- suspense, romance, and beautiful writing. The little details are great, including the way each chapter starts with a quick note of where you are -- whose house or winery for example -- and it makes it so easy to feel like you are there. It is a well-crafted world with every little detail correct. I love that the vampires have names that are accurate for their times. Historical details are correct too. This is well-researched, well-planned, and well-written. Can't wait for the story to continue.

Dark Wine at Sunrise is the 2nd book in this series. Loved it! A town full of vamps kept me reading into the wee hours. I found that a couple of the secondary characters kept the story alive as well as the main ones. The big rescue scene was sooo well written! If you like paranormal, vampires, action and romance you will enjoy this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book.

I loved this second book of this series but I struggled with parts. I fell in love with the characters while reading the first book but all the questions I had were answered in the first third of the second book making me feel like I had all I wanted. But this author's writing sucked me back in. She got my attention just like she did in the first book and she's quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Fantasy romance at its most engaging, this story has everything a reader could ask for. Mystery, suspense, hate, love, sex, gender bias, religion and species bias. The action, both violence and romance, are realistic and clear. The characters are fully believable, easy to love or hate. Sometimes both. Overall a fast paced and easily read novel. I really like the question of whether the Lux are an ancient alien race trapped on earth or fallen angels working to find their way back to heaven.

It was a pleasure getting back into this story and revisiting these amazing characters. I enjoyed how the plot thickened (hehe) and the many twists that kept me guessing right until the end. Add in a conspiracy, along with the tension between humans and vampires (and the Lux!) all made for an exciting read. I would definitely be interested in finding out what happens next! Dark Wine at Sunrise starts where Dark Wine at Sunset ended. Henry is in trouble still and Cerissa is trying to save him and the town. The town is out to get them and everyone that is against them (the town).

I loved this story as much if not more than the first one. The love interests do have an ending, but the story continues. I hope that makes sense. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy for my honest review. I can't wait to see where the story goes next.

Mystery with a surprising theme

This book is romantic, yes, and like the first one, it got my juices flowing at least once. However, the romance is a bit of a back seat driver to the main plot which is a bit closer to a crime mystery. A lot of detective work and character suspects play a main role. Also the author works in a bit of a surprising theme about what it means to be free and the nature of religion and faith.

Very satisfying read.

As with the first book, this one was slow reading through the first half but then picked up like a speeding train. Lots of suspense, more delving into Henry and Cerissa's relationsnip and insight into Cerissa's species. Cerissa endangers her very existence to heal a friend, and Henry rushes to the Enclave to rescue her. Cerissa continues her assignment to get to the bottom of the VDM and another cog in the movement is brought to light.

Book two, how I loved you as well. These are a slow burn romance but not "sweet" as such. There is so much depth and detail to the storyline that the physical pieces of the relationship are far from hidden, but at the same time are not the focal point. I feel like I'm getting great value for my money, there is so much storyline in each book. Number three? Can't wait!!

I'm not a fan of traditional romance stories. This series is too close to those.
I am interested in the VDM sub plot and will continue just for that.
