I just found this book while going through some boxes of books stored away and remember this was the first book I ever bought back in the 5th grade. Great dog stories that I plan to re-read soon. Highly recommended for all dog lovers.
I am enjoying this book again. It was a source of pleasure when I was a child and this second time around, it is even more special. A teary eye has occurred a few times while reading about these wonderful creatures who live with and for us.
Here is a delightful excerpt from a story titled: Garm - A Hostage by Rudyard Kipling
"The driver and I coaxed him into the carriage, drove home swiftly, undressed him and put him to bed, where he waked next morning with a sore headache, very much ashamed. When his uniform was cleaned and dried, and he had been shaved and washed and made neat, I drove him back to barracks with his arm in a fine white sling, and reported that I had accidentally run over him. I did not tell this story to my friend's sergeant, who was a hostile and unbelieving person, but to his lieutenant, who did not know us quite so well."
This is one of my 'take-it-when-you're-running-from-the-burning-building' books. Much-loved; hard to replace. I have other dog-story anthologies, but Florence Peterson did such an outstanding job of finding the best of the best, I haven't been able to match it. Classic stories like Lassie Come Home and short stories or chapters from books by great authors like James Thurber, John Steinbeck and Rudyard Kipling (Garm—A Hostage) keep me coming back to this book year after year.
