He has a big…smile.
It was the first thing I noticed that day until he stood. His grey sweatpants hung off his hips and I didn’t want to look. I really didn’t.
I’m a feminist.
I don’t believe in objectifying men. I don’t catcall men. I don’t ogle the bodies of men. I don’t view men as objects of my affection rather than complex people with feelings, wants, and needs of their own. I don’t treat men the way society often treats women.
I treat men the way I want to be treated as a woman—with respect!
So, when Carlos ran into me while I was reviewing my interview questions in the park, it surprised me to see my photography classmate out of context. I was also surprised to see as much of him as I did.
It wasn’t just that it caught my eye. It was the fact that it held my attention.
It wasn’t just that it was large. It was the fact that it was visibly large.
It wasn’t just that it was Carlos Richmond. It was the fact that I am Akila Bishara.
And I am not seduced by anything other than intelligent conversation, witty rapport, and meaningful actions.
I am not seduced by a dick print.
I am not.
Seriously, I’m not.

“My point is that women are constantly objectified, but men would lose their shit if they were scrutinized, objectified, and sexualized the way we are.”

4.5 🌟

Fictional love stories messing me up again.

Lord! I want what these two have.

This story was close to perfection! I needed an epilogue and the resolve to have been a little longer, but that’s me being a nit-picky and wanting more time with the characters. But I adored this!! Which I wasn’t expecting. Which makes this story all the more better.

The chemistry these two had was unparalleled. I love it when couples have individual lives and it’s explored to the fullest and Danielle Allen did that. They were passionate about their work and in general, intelligent, their energy was amazing and the cover for this book just wraps it up nicely.

If you’ve read the book, you know.

I appreciated how the author explored what women go through. From sexual objectification to sexual harassment. The conversations that revolve around that, the controversial, the disgusting and the good. Our heroine was a fighter! I loved the podcast element, the photography classes and the writing that they contributed as part of their job. It all spoke to me.

I appreciated the cover for this story even more now. And not just because it’s damn nice to look at, but with the message the author relayed.

Think I’m obsessed with Danielle Allen now.

Danielle Allen knows how to write a romance. This is a hate to love romance where the hero and heroine are always thrown together. First, they meet in a photography class where they are partnered up and really hit it off. But then the heroine learns he is part of a podcast of men giving "dating" advice that she finds appalling and misogynistic. She instantly is put off and cannot stand the thought of being around him. But then, she's going for a new job and realizes she's writing a column about dating in the city with the guy from her photography class. The two are not always around each other and can't seem to ignore their connection. But can the heroine trust him when he is part of such an awful podcast? I really enjoyed seeing these two bicker and banter, but also really click and want to be around each other. There was also a great friend group, which Danielle Allen does such a good job at writing. I really enjoyed how our heroine was so dedicated to her work and was ambitious when it came to getting what she wanted. This was also pretty steamy and I could not get enough of the hero and heroine when they were together!

I really wanted to like Sweatpants Season but, it was so boring. I tried to make it to at least chapter six but, I couldn't even get past chapter two. This book just didn’t capture my attention which, is surprising because I'm a huge fan of Danielle Allen. This was the first book by her that I didn’t like. It was way too vanilla and, when I say vanilla, I mean white. This book read like it was written by a white author. The blackness was severely lacking. I find it hard to get into a book written by a black author that's giving me nothing but vanilla vibes so, it's going to be a hard no for me on Sweatpants Season. I won't even attempt to read Cuffing Season.

I was hesitant going into this book after I read the synopsis but I was hoping this would be a more light, fun read than anything else but I was wrong. There were many things I had issues with in this book but the extent of misogyny and sexualization is reason enough for my rating. It’s one thing if the characters grow in the end and see the wrongs that progressed throughout the book but that didn’t happen here. There was just a lot that was brushed off and when things were addressed, it wasn’t to the extent it should have been or missed the whole problem entirely. Like the newsletter. It should have been a big problem no matter the person, but they made it seem like it was only an issue when they realized who it was. That unknown woman is a person too who was being just as grossly and unknowingly objectified.

Carlos acts all high and mighty like he’s the most respectful guy out there but they way he lets the other guys talk on his podcast proves he’s not even close. He is not saying disrespectful and disgusting things but he just sits there and lets them say it all. The fact that he even considers them his best friends is bad enough. I don’t care how they try to spin it, Carlos sucked. A truly good guy wouldn’t sit there while other guys say those things and he would definitely not only disagree with what the podcast stands for, but also be aware of how problematic City Boy and Country Boy are. What makes it worse is that he acknowledged to an extent that they go “too far” but still defended them. It seems like I’m the only one who had such a strong distain for him compared to other reviews though.

Akila wasn’t any better. She was a hypocrite all around. She was on her high horse judging Carlos for the podcast that objectifies women then so openly and consistently sexualized Carlos himself. I can see this book trying to have some resemblance of feminism in it but it misses terribly. What the book was actually about and what it was trying to portray, are completely contradictory to each other. She also saw how problematic the podcast was but somehow didn’t see Carlos in the same light. She had moments of actually holding Carlos accountable but then she went right back to thinking he’s a good guy and couldn’t help but like him. I just don’t understand how she could be so strongly against what he does but still be attracted to him the way she is.

I didn’t like the characters, I didn’t like the message behind this book and I didn’t like how everything was resolved in the end either. This was my fault though, I should have known what I was getting into after reading the synopsis.

Akila knows she shouldn’t be attracted to Carlos but she can’t help it. Carlos is associated with a group of guys that she’s against. This is where things got tricky and interesting. I could see both sides of the each character but I was on Akila’s side more. In addition to enemies to lovers this was also a slow burn romance. I love how Akila didn’t waiver in her beliefs once sex was added to the mix. Akila stood her ground and I loved her passion. Carlos became the man I knew he could and made me so proud.

This is only my second read by Danielle Allen and she’s quickly becoming one of my go to authors. I really enjoyed this book and the message it sends. I found myself nodding my head in agreement many times as I read. A love a book that makes you stop and think and this book did that for me several times. The plot was engaging from the very beginning and the characters are well developed. If you are a fan of enemies to lovers and slow burns you need to check this book out. I am counting down the days for Cuffing Season.

These folks was falling in love the entire dang book and just would NOT communicate. They had all this sexual tension and thought they were just going to be one and done. Wrong! If yall grown folks don't get it together. Eventually Akila & Carlos gets it together at the end y’all geez.

For me this was an okay read I just expected a little More of something. Esp with the title. It’s a very slooooowww burn romance. So slow the characters got on my nerves.
Well written just didn’t enjoyed it as much as I would have liked. 3.25ish/5⭐️ if it wasn’t for Wesleigh I probably would have DNF’d.

I took a chance on new to me author, Danielle Allen and it paid off in a BIG way! I fell in love with Akila and Carlos! These two are magic and passion and fueled by intellectual and physical lust.

It's kind of ironic that the cover of Sweatpants Season is what drew me, because the story overall is about objectification, and I was definitely objectifying this cover model. I mean, goodness gracious that is sexy! Sweatpants Season is a slow burning romance, their simmering attraction had me dying for them to kiss, to rip each others clothes off and bang against the wall. The attraction between Carlos and Akila was palpable.

Outside of the chemistry and romance I simply loved how strong, smart and independent Akila is. She is fierce and stood behind her beliefs one hundred percent. Not only that, but she was authentic and her thoughts were true to life. I have the same internal battles with myself that she struggled with internally.

Now, this brings me to the smart, respectful Carlos. This man, is truly the perfect counterpart for Akila because he challenges her, he protects her and you can tell he respects her even when she is obviously frustrating him. (Men should take notes from Carlos.)

Sweatpants Season, was fun and flirty, but was balanced perfectly with hard hitting issues. I laughed, I swooned, I was turned on and I had gut churning fear when I could feel everything coming to a head. This story is a must read if you are looking for a provocative enemies/co-workers to lovers novel with sexually charged banter!

What a very pleasant surprise this book was!! Granted the cover drew me in like bees to honey, but I knew it was a Danielle Allen book and my heart was safe with her. Akila & Carlos brought all the tortured angst. What started as friends turned to enemies who had to work together that then turned to scorching hot sex. This story was so much more than that though. I loved that Danielle went there and she usually does. She explored what it’s like for women and how they’re constantly objectified by what seems to be the majority of men. Among many things, what I love most about Danielle’s stories are the strong, smart, savvy and classy heroines she writes. I also love the female relationships and they always leave me wishing I had a girl gang like the ones she writes.

This story was very thought provoking and would make great Bookclub discussions. As always Wesleigh slaysss on audio. She just has a talent that is very memorable with each story she narrates. I will be thinking of this story for a while.

This was my first book by Danielle Allen. We’re reading it in a FB book club, and I’m just mad it took me this long to find her and her books. Sweatpants Season was wonderful! I felt like I would fit right in with Akila and her crew and hang because they were such cool and hilarious women. Akila was strong, intelligent, determined, driven and took no ish off anyone. From the beginning, Carlos was this force that bowled her over with his intensity, vitality, strength and passion. But while the two had this immediate connection, they soon found themselves at odds and in competition. I don’t want to spoil why, but the set-up of keeping these two constantly orbiting each other was brilliant.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book nit was entertaining, sexy and funny with awesome dialogue and great characters. And the theme of women empowerment was relevant and great to read. I can’t wait to read more from Danielle Allen!

This was a slow burn to build and show the attraction and chemistry between Carlos (Los Cabos) & Akila.... It was nice to see the two of them had so much in common, which ultimately brought them together. Akila is considered the modern day feminist and Carlos is the voice of reason. The two of them are partners in a photography class and also partnered by an Editor at a popular magazine to collaborate on a series of articles from each of their perspectives. Despite the initial attraction when meeting in the class, the close proximity really provides a full on picture of the chemistry between the two. Of course there are some bumps and bruises along the way, but the couple eventually figure it all out. Wesleigh did an absolutely phenomenal job voicing all of the various characters in the story.

4.5 STARS

I loved this one! Great writing, characters and topics of feminism.

1. I absolutely loved the hero. Carlos runs with a more misogynistic crew, and while he is not, we got to see him grapple with toeing that line seeing and hearing his friends do it. It added a great element to the story. I loved his devotion to his craft and his integrity.
2. Akila was a phenomenal heroine - passionate and focused on her goals. She is willing to take on the patriarchy, and I love that she struggled with her love of Carlos and his friends.
3. These two had great chemistry, in and out of the bedroom. Their romance is predicated on their intellectual connect and love of writing (and many the D Print).
4. If you love seeing women take down those podcast guys on TikTok, you’ll love this book!
5. It was such a great take on feminism and the patriarchy!
6. Great narrators!

Danielle Allen is a new to me author. I absolutely enjoyed her writing and loved the story and characters.

I came across Sweatpants Season by Danielle Allen and let’s just say the cover more than captured my attention. I know y’all looked too, lol. I’m not gonna lie, I was a bit skeptical about the story based on the cover ( I know, I know, never judge a book by its cover), but I read a few goodreads reviews and decided to give it a try. I’m so happy that I did!

Freelance journalist, Akila Bishara, is a smart, goal oriented career woman with her eye on her dream job. In order to bring her website that she will be launching soon to life and add more to her articles she decides to take a photography class. There, she meets the sexy Carlos Richmond. Not only is he good looking and smart, but something about his energy speaks to her causing an immediate attraction. And that was before she saw that impressive print in his grey sweatpants.

You guys, this book was so good! I absolutely loved Akila and the way she stood her ground for the things she believed in. I was infatuated with Carlos and I loved that he was so much more than an attractive face. The story was very well written and I enjoyed getting to know the characters. Not only are the main characters POC, but on her Goodreads bio Ms. Allen states that she is an advocate for diversity in romance 👏🏼👍🏼👏🏼👍🏼. I will definitely be reading more of her books, and even better her books are on KU!!!

It’s almost that time of the year, so I thought it would be on theme to read Sweatpants Season in preparation. 🩳🤪🩳

I’m not an expert on gray sweatpants and dick prints—I wouldn’t mind learning more on the *ahem* subject, to be honest—but I suppose they are the equivalent of female nipples hinting through a thin bra and top, or butt-lifting-enhancing TikTok leggings?

“You seduced me on Friday. You were in the lobby waiting for me wearing those sweatpants. You know damn well what you were doing.”

He laughed. “What?”

“Question two… you know those sweatpants you had on showed off your big ass dick with that big ass dick print, right?”

In all seriousness, I expected a silly fluffy story but this book surprised me with a strong feminist point of view, which I enjoyed and respect. The romance itself is enemies-to-lovers in the workplace, so that’s already an instant winner for many readers.

“Which is probably why I’m single,” I joked with a giggle. “There are a lot of men who seem scared of a woman with fight.”

“Boys fear a woman with fight in them. Men respect it.”

Good banter between characters, which made me grin and chuckle in parts. I enjoyed this book and recommend it while kicking back with a toasty PSL in hand. A really easy read with a simple plot, interesting power dynamics and some well-written sex scenes.

Holy sexiness! Danielle Allen has been my latest romance author-discoveries this year. Her books click with me and provide me with just the kind of entertainment of books. Sweatpants Season was no different. I love how Danielle Allen writes protagonists that I end up easily caring about. Akila was an intelligent and career-driven freelance journalist who had accomplished some amazing goals. I loved how she stood for what she believed in and didn't have any trouble speaking her mind. Carlos was just the perfect complement to her. He was equally intelligent and passionate. He was dreamy with how respectful he was of her. Together, they were very compatible and I shipped them so hard. Akila and Carlos's chemistry was obvious from the start. The sexy times were fire and the romantic progression worked really well - there's a bit of a rivals-to-lovers vibe to the story if that's a trope you enjoy. Their relationship did have a few obstacles including their new jobs as co-writers for a magazine and a podcast show that Carlos hosted with some misogynistic friends, but they never felt excessive or unrealistic. Speaking of misogynistic friends, Sweatpants Season also tackled sexism, toxic masculinity, and sexual harassment. I appreciated the author's thoughtful commentaries through the voices of her characters and their reactions. I had a great time reading Sweatpants Season and I 100% recommend the book for a sexy and flirty experience.

The hero isn't fully described in totality but there are titillating breadcrumbs sprinkled throughout their initial introduction. The description of the hero and heroine involves everything accept their skin tone. So, for me -- an incomplete picture is painted of the couple. The heroine (like her) and the hero (loved him) are both smart, funny and sexy.

There was a moment with the heroine and her renowned art teacher that went nowhere, and it felt like something when I read it. I would have liked to have known how Jennifer fared in her attempts to get the art teacher to notice her. Also, the word wasn't uttered once in this story.

Highly Recommended. Read It!

NOTE: There is an excerpt of Broken Clocks and Luca appears in that story.

Don't judge a book by it's title

I got the message. I dug the message. However, the hours it took to get through and to this message was torture. I wanted to quit reading so many times, but I like this author so I stayed with it. I shouldn't have.

5 "Click Bait" Stars!

Well, well, well, Ms. Dylan Allen tried to pull as fast one on us with this cover. SO I thought I was getting a smuttactacular read with maybe a little bit of a love story to go with it. What I got was a fantastic story with two fantastic character and also fantastic side character with a little bit (well, actually perfectly enough) fantastic smutt to go with it.

-side note- smutt is a term of endearment and by no way intended to be derogatory or shameful in any way.

Okay, back to it. I was vested in Akila and Carlos story right away. From their first meeting, the sparks were flying off the page. They seemed both destined to be together and destined to be kept apart because of circumstances and choices. The journey was completely captivating. Happy reading!

I truly enjoyed this book! This book showed so much with women go through on a daily and it goes unnoticed, I’m happy this author showed that objectifying women is not cool and she flipped the script in a tasteful matter. Akila gave me superwoman vibes. She was this strong, confident, outspoken beauty who made sure she got her point across whether you liked it or not and I truly appreciated her character! Carlos and Akila intelligence together were unstoppable and it automatically drew them together in an intimate way that neither couldn’t ignore if they wanted to. Each message will pull a reader in and every woman that experience this or not will appreciate their femininity more. The most important message that stood out was if a woman decides to wear anything she’s comfortable in whether her body parts are “too revealing” or not it’s her choice and she’s not looking for attention to wear something that she’s comfortable in. Danielle definitely set the bar with this one

If I could give a book a negative score, I would...
I couldn't make it through any more of this horrible "book". The feminism in this book was so overpowering that it actually made me root against the heroine. She was so full of herself and thought she was the epitome of feminism. BUT she kept contradicting herself and was rude and judgmental of just about any man she met. The first interaction she had in her class with another female painted that girl as the most vapid, brainless bimbo in the world. The main character was straight up rude and a complete bitch to that girl, which was completely unnecessary. The way she treated that girl felt like a step back in feminism.
If all of this author's books are like this, I can promise that I will not be reading any more of her work. This book was honestly complete trash

What an interesting read! The cover pulls you in right? It’s also making a statement. This book had its steamy parts but I also love how it highlighted how women are objectified and and then called a B because they don’t want attention from someone. Women have every right to dress up go out and have a good time without feeling like they owe any man speaking to them anything . Akila meets Los short for Carlos at a photography class they are both taking and they hit it off. This changes when she finds out that he’s part of a podcast that often talk down on women. You might be reading this and think, Well aren’t men objectified too? Yes, they are. The cover was what caught my attention. And it’s also something discussed in the book. I’ll definitely be reading more about this author!

What I love most about this book is the chemistry between the characters it’s the exact feeling and passion that makes romance so special. It’s what we’re all secretly hoping for. The message about toxic masculinity and gaslighting was also really well done, but it’s the silent complacency that a Carlos represents that I think is the most important because it’s often overlooked.

Mostly, I'm pretty good at judging a book by its cover, but this one was totally unexpected. I was thinking this would be more e-rom, but no, it's a smart contemporary romance with a feminist message and a condemnation of toxic masculinity and complicity with it. Also, hot.

Irritating

Akila was soooooooooo annoying. She was such a hypocrite and extremely judgmental. She was constantly mad because others were being judge mental and stereotyping, yet she was doing the same thing at every turn. The whole first half was her saying, Your friends said it, so you must think just like them.

I do think she initially had reason to pause when she found out he was one of the Lost Boys, because they were misogynistic a.holes and “birds of a feather,” but that doesn’t discredit all of his other amazing qualities. Plus, just because you are associated with someone, doesn’t mean you are the same person. I am a feminist, completely and totally, but stuff like this gives feminism a bad rep. She was acting like such a judgmental man-hater.

I mad it half way through the book when I just could take her judgement anymore. I didn’t finish the book. I read to escape reality and calm myself. This just pissed me off and irritated me. I had to leave.

This book really struck a chord with me. The story telling was just smooth like milk chocolate. It was just the right amount of sweetness, richness and yummy sensuality.
First of all, Akita felt like one of my girlfriends. She was focused, strong, funny and loyal. Carlos was all of those things as well. Which made their competitive rivalry for the Remix job entertaining and full of angst.

I love the social issue presented by the “City Boys”. It was a pretty compelling social discussion concerning the objectification of women. Really good discussion about that podcast and how they influenced their society. It made me think of social media today.

The writing was visceral and the sex scenes were intensely sensual. I love Wesleigh Siobhan’s narration because she nailed the hero and heroine voices. I couldn’t put this book down and it is one of my favorites now.

First, I should be ashamed of myself, because of how much I enjoyed this captivating story and how many times I RE-READ THAT NAUGHTY BLURB! Lol!!!!
When I wasn't laughing out loud at Carlos and Akila, I was shaking my head at the attraction they were super unsuccessfully fighting.
Both Carlos and Akila are really courageous in standing up for their beliefs. It is extremely difficult to stand up to bullies, but City Boy and Country Boy, those two jerks on Lost Boys, went way too far and could have caused physical harm to innocent women because of their irresponsible words.
Nevertheless, I wished that Ms. Allen had shared some of the male patron's responses to Akila's exhibit.
Awesome Story!!!!!
