I'm the author of The Menon Women Series books - The Wedding Tamasha, Priyamvada&Co., and About That Summer.
My debut novel, The Wedding Tamasha, a sweet romantic tale about love, family, and traditions, was a winner of the Amazon Pen To Publish Contest in 2017. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...
Also part of my story collection are short stories - The Girl With A Secret Crush, Three Of Hearts, Mr and Mrs Nambiar, and Ahoy Amrika.
No maturity in writing. A girl has crush on a writer and they meet by chance and then what happens is the story. It's like someone's imagination is put in words.
I absolutely loved the language. Subtle, apt words. Perfect brevity. Similar experience I had with J. Alchem’s Undelivered Letters. Maybe that’s one of the reasons these both authors won P2P competition.
Malini, the girl with a secret crush, is the protagonist and her character is developed and fostered well. A few lines into the book and you could see Malini in front of you. I loved her cat’s name- Peepal. Her crush (not cat’s, Malini’s crush) Vikram is a bestselling author, who is obviously unaware of his fans (or maybe crush-es too), and he is facing writer’s block and need to get out of it. Malini is the savior as she’d read his book again and again and knows them inside out. Vikram’s first impression is rude, narcissist and somewhat arrogant. I feel it is exaggerated a little. But anyway, he shows his soft side when Malini gets trapped in a weird situation. All is well then.
In my opinion without the epilogue too, the story makes sense. For short stories, I like open endings where the reader could visualize and imagine further story by themselves.
Honestly, I really liked this story. It is just 30 pages but I thought it was written quite lucidly and neatly. One of the major issues I have with reading short-stories is many of them lack the perfect pacing the narration requires, however, that cannot be said in the case of “The girl with a secret crush”. I thought everything moved at an excellent pace, to cram everything in 30 pages without making things seemed rushed as well as to retain all the emotions and feelings the author wants to convey is according to me a job very well done.
Malini is a proof-reader in a publishing house. she nourishes a crush on best-selling author Vikram Mathur who is also a very important client of her firm. She has a very limited life and most of it revolves around her work. She works diligently when it comes to reading and rectifying Vikram books and making them a success. Obviously, Vikram is oblivious of Malini’s existence. Then one day, she gets a chance to finally meet Vikram in person, naturally, she is nervous but also very excited to meet the man himself. Unfortunately, the meeting between the two of them is a disaster and Vikram isn’t anything like Malini imagined him to be.
The best thing about this story is that I identify myself so much with Malini. No, I don’t stalk authors but there are fictional characters whom I love and care for as if they were real. As do many readers I am sure so I certainly understand Malini’s psyche. She loves the characters that Vikram has created and therefore feels drawn towards the man himself who created them. I totally get it. Vikram, on the other hand, comes rude and impertinent initially. His character is a metaphor for all those authors who cannot take criticism in a positive light but I am glad that he realises his mistakes soon enough and works to rectify them. honestly, I loved what the author did with his character. I also loved the fact that Malini even though smitten with Vikram doesn’t take his bullshit and speaks her mind. Obviously, things get settled between the two of them and they have their happily ever after but I loved that the conflict shown between these two-people felt real rather than sappy.
Overall, it’s a sweet story about love. Being a short story there isn't much scope for character and plot development so that's isn't an issue at all. It isn’t something completely original or something which has never been done in a story before but as long as the story has good writing, language and structure I am really okay with it. On a completely unrelated note, I could have done without that epilogue. I liked the ending better without the epilogue, it wasn’t bad or anything and I believe it to be a preference based on the reader but I liked the idea of an open ending and somethings left to my imagination.
P.S- Review copy provided by the author, in exchange for my honest opinion.
Narrated completely from girl's angle this is a short and sweet story about a proofreader who's secretly in love with a famous author. The story had a lot of things just skimmed over, but did spend the right amount of time on the moments that were important. A short light read.
Looking into the mirror, she talked to herself, “Malini Vaidyanathan. Unmarried. Twenty-nine years old. Cat lover. Lives alone. Has a crush on Vikram Mathur. Is meeting him today.”
Malini works for Jayco Publishing and is a very big fan of Vikram Mathur's books. She has read all his books and also has a secret crush on him. But, Vikram discusses about his upcoming books with Sanghamitra, who happens to be Malini's colleague.
It so happens that once, Sanghamitra is on a leave and Vikram wants to discuss about the plot for his upcoming novel. She asks Malini to meet him on her behalf. Malini is super excited and shocked both at the same time.
Finally, they meetup and Malini suggests a plan for the Novel which Vikram opposes. He says he would discuss it with Sanghamitra once she is back. Malini feels offended. The meeting was about to get into a bad shape.
So, what happens to the girl with a secret crush on the bestselling author? Will she ever be able to let out her feelings? What about Vikram's upcoming novel?
Frankly speaking, I did not like the book. The plot seemed really excellent. As I kept reading, I was curious to know what would happen next, when the story abruptly ended. No, I really expected more from the author. The book didn't seem appealing at all.
Malini S Vaidyanathan, 29, a literature graduate, joined Jayco Publishing fresh out of college as a proof reader. In the eight years that she has worked here, she has proof read 14 books of Vikram Mathur, but has never met him. Even the bad pay and no promotion do not demotivate her. She has a secret crush on the writer as reads and re-reads his books. So one day, when her boss, Sagarika, is on a much deserved vacation, she gets a call from Vikram that he has a major writer’s block and needs to discuss the story problem of his latest book. Sagarika tells Malini to fill in as she is the one who knows his work the best. But narcissistic, arrogant, cynical Vikram is not like the hero of his books and to top it all, he does not like anything she says. A short story with well-developed characters. The story is fast paced, simple and sweet. The author has described the emotions of the characters in details. This may be the prequel to a novel in the offing, one can hope.

Do you ever had a crush on an author and fell in love with his characters in the book?
Well, I believe we as a reader, every now and then fall in love with fictional characters. The same goes with Malini Vaidyanathan who not only love the characters in the book but secretly had a crush on its author too.
Insights:
The book "A Girl with a secret crush" by Sudha Nair introduces you to Ms Malini who works at Jayco as a proof reader has a crush on an author named Vikram Mathur whose each and every book was proof read by her but unfortunately Vikram Mathur knew nothing about her existence.
Circumstances led Malini to meet Vikram to discuss the character and plots about his upcoming book. Vikram disagrees to her suggestion and arrogantly leaves her. She found him to be rude and bullheaded author.
Later, Vikram changes the plot as suggested by Malini which turned him to be the best selling author. In return Malini gets promoted. Here, their love story began. It ended on good note of getting married.
Review:
As it is the bestseller book on amazon kindle I got notified today morning. Decided to read and ended up with the conclusion that the story line was neither too bad nor it was too good yet was an interesting piece to read. I loved the cover page. The story could have been improved more adding few more details about the characters and their living.
Strength - The plot and writing style of the book.
Drawback - The story is too short. It could have been elongated or more descriptive. It seems an early epilogue to the book.
Target - Anyone who is looking for a light read can definitely go for this book. You can read it in nonchalant mood while having tea as it is just 36 pages book.
Rating - 3.5/5
So choose this light read if you are bored in this quarantine and tag me in your review.
Last Sunday, I saw this book on Prime Reading and I knew I had to take it. I had been searching for the short story for a couple of days by then so this came as a total surprise. I started reading it rightaway; and to be honest, it was a welcome change for my train ride. I was getting terribly bored and I was already finished with the book I had brought along. (Not my fault, the train was late.) So I picked it up and I was actually a little surprised after reading it. The main reason behind that is that it was a typical meet-and-fall scenario. Girl meets guy, girl hates guy, girl falls in love with guy, girl and guy have a happily ever after. Typical, no? Of course, there was a lot more to the story than that but this was the basic outline. The other complication was that the guy was an author and the girl his proofreader-cum-his fan.
It was a little boring to read, to be honest; even if it was short. I'd suggest this book to be read by someone who is a beginner in stories and for reading.
The writing was good here; and I think that is the only thing that I even liked about this book in the first place. (Sorry, just can't write more on the topic.)

"She was in love with stories. All sorts of stories." - I feel these words are written thinking about me.
Malini Vaidyanathan is a proofreader with a deep crush on author Vikram Mathur (who doesn't know her existence). Malini had to meet Vikram for professional reasons one day, who was facing writer's block with his recent book. What Malini finds is a bullheaded arrogant male, but suddenly her wardrobe malfunctions and Vikram walk in to help her out.
Before Malin's malfunction she had visited Vikram to discuss his new book or the changes required for the book. Firstly he didn't take it smoothly and was offended but later took her idea which resulted in turning the book into a bestseller.
At the end Malini gets promoted and she takes over Vikram's account. This professional relationship gave way to their true love and an amazing marriage.
Malini is a proofreader in a publishing firm and all she does is to read the books and suggest the best so that the plot makes wonders and grips the reader's attention. Malini has a secret crush on Vikram who is an author of few books. She never got a chance to meet him, yet she read all his books for proofreading and suggested the best with Sanghamitra, her boss. Sanghamitra delivers the same with the author Vikram but she was on leave for vacation. Exactly at that moment, Vikram wants to speak with Sanghamitra, so the boss asks Malini to heed forward on behalf of her. This gives a chance for Malini to meet her dream come true...
What happens after they meet and what leads Vikram to change his persona is an enhancing depiction to read. Can rejoice by this short read tale.
It's time for another #bookreview, everyone has a crush on someone once in their life. ~ The girl with a secret crush by Sudha Nair is a short debut story. ~ Malini a girl who's working in a publication house as a proofreader and loves the cats. She read the book of Vikram a writer and got a crush on him for the last 8 yrs without met once in life. She reads his books many times but, one day she got the opportunity to meet with him. When she met him, her view towards him quite changes because the meeting does not go well. Lately, After some time they met situation changes, and things getting start changes. ~ It's a quick read short story, I like the story but the plot gets better Book Rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5/5. ~ Share your favorite debut short story? ~veenita~
The book is just 32 pages and of that only 75 % is the story rest 25% is a brief article from another story. The story is kind of stereotypical Bollywood type love story. The protagonist is a literature graduate and working as a proofreader. She like books of a writer who is a client of the publishing house in which she works. She develops a crush for the writer later on they both end up together. Read the book to find out how it happens. My academics are not associated with literature, I can't comment on the writing style.

The character of Malini matches to single girls who are happy in thier solitude. The character of Vikram is also depicted well. The feeling of love is kept so pure, I thought the romance will be converted into lusty adventure as lust sells more but there are good writers out there who is able to translate the feeling of love. Enjoyed reading. Thank you Sudha Nair
The book narrates the love story of Malini, a proof reader at Jayco Publishing and Vikram, her client and the famous bestselling writer.
Though it a short story it has tight plot. And isn't rushing like other short books I have read. Some of the scenes are narrated so well that while reading you can see them being played in front of your eyes. Hats off to Sudha Nair's writing skills.
Short yet sweet read. You won't regret to read this wonderful peace of work.
The story is about a girl, Malini who works as a proof reader and her rendezvous with Vikram ( Her secret crush and an author). The story actually gripped me and kept me to complete it in one sitting. The character Malini felt real to me as the way the author had described her. The feeling she faced when meeting with one's crush was very relatable and the way she handled Vikram's demeanor. I wish Vikram's character was more elaborated. However, the book did have a pretty good ending.
It is a story about a proofreader who is in love with the author whose manuscripts she reads. She is in love with him and how their love story progresses is something to read in it.
The plot was different and I loved how the story paced. Some love stories are dragged with low significance and they take the essence away. This one was short and to the point. Loved how it ended.
For all those who are new to Amazon Kindle, pls read this.Takes less than half an hour to finish and the vivid description with which the author has described the surroundings (in a short story) really makes you imagine as if you are there to witness malini's sweet dream to come true. Highly recommended 👍
I didn't like the book. Story looks really immature. It's about a proofreader who fall in love with his favourite author and got a chance to meet him accidently and later, story follows. The only thing which I like about the book is the plot but it was not written and edited well. Editing is extremely poor.
Lovely story premise. Malini is simple, adorable. Vikram comes with his own persona and charm. They meet under conflicted circumstances but fall for each other. As they say fun is in the journey not the destination. A page-turner.
I didn't find single profound sentence, moment in the book. It can be story for a TV Episode but no need of publishing a book for it. For Teenagers maybe a romantic read, for adults it's too dramatic to feel the romance.
the story was progressing so nicely but what an abrupt epilogue. i thought there were missing pages. makes me feel incomplete now. so stupid. dunno why so many stars and review. some of the authors other books are good though.
Three stars because it was so short. Didn't feel like a book at all. Barely an hours read. And the sudden start of the second story with its continuation in a website makes no sense.
This was a short and sweet read. It had all the ingredients of a perfect romance. I just felt that the epilogue was rushed. Sudha could have added a chapter or two to show how Vikram and Malini's love story progressed.
Nothing big, The Girl With A Secret Crush was a quick feel-good read with a predictable and all the more sexy ending. And that's exactly what's required at some point in life. Just a quick one to get you up on your feet and inspire you to keep reaching out to what you really want.
