"I was in her universe, the one that controlled and spurred more of my demons than I could ever hope to harness."

Well, what can I say about Mick? He's so similar to all the Lakefield Men we've already met, yet he's so much different. Mick's story is a lot darker, grittier than we are used to. This book is about corruption, power, greed, crazy and shady people as much as it is about falling in love withthe one person that can sooth your soul.

"He was both gentle and rough. Sweet and naughty. Aggressive and giving. So many polar opposites wrapped into one person."

Alysa and Mick are a perfect match. She's the light to his darkness. Both are fighters, fighting their own battles until they realize that no one can hurt them when they fight together as one unit. They are very intriguing characters with some emotional issues on very different levels unfolding through a gripping, thrilling and angsty storyline.

And let's not forget to talk about their unbelievably hot chemistry in and out of the bedroom. Be prepared for some steamy scenes that will make you blush.

"He filled a room with darker and possible dangerous demeanor, his eyes roaming as if directly looking for a threat."

Mick is a fantastic start to a promising new dark series I really can't wait to continue reading!

"He'd taken a bullet for me, killed for me, loved me and scared me."

All I have to say is WOW. This book signals the start of a darker, grittier side to the author that is slightly reminiscent of Jay Crownover’s world in her Point books. We had it all here: corruption, rich men who think they’re more powerful than God, crazy people willing to do their bidding for a piece of the pie, and the men and women brave enough to start a war to take back a city full of greed from men shady enough to grow their own orchards.

Alisa and Mick grabbed me from the start and didn’t let go until the very last page. Alisa has been fighting to breathe clean air and live her own life for years, but she’s always been careful because she’s seen as a pawn by her own family. Mick has his own battles to fight and thinks he’s unworthy of her love, but he just can’t convince himself to walk away. Sprinkle in some fantastic characters like Alex, Mason, and Paul (yes, I loved him), and you’ve got a group of insane men willing to fight for what’s right in their world.

The saddest moment in this book was the last page, because it meant that I’d hit the end...for now. I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

Every time I read one of Jennifer’s books, I’m blown away. Truly. Reading the Lakefield series in succession, I saw Jennifer’s way with words go from great to amazing. In Mick I was left broken, with my pieces stitched back together, left hanging by a thread. I connected with Mick on a level I hadn’t with anyone in her other books. Although Brock will always be mine (hah S Van Horne had to give up her boys so I’m claiming him), Mick broke my heart.

We all got snippets of Mick in the last of the Lakefield series, though you don’t have to read those books before this one I HIGHLY SUGGEST IT, but that was before he was broken. We got little bits of the cold man, but that was before his soul was left withered and dried up. There was nothing he could do, nothing anyone could do, to breathe life into his life. There was no light to his darkness, no saint to his sinner.

…Until Alisa stumbles into his lap. From the first, they have a pull towards each other. As much as Mick wants to stay away, he can’t. And he doesn’t want to. Besides the fact, Alisa wouldn’t let him. She may have been sweet, choosing to see the good in everyone, but she got what she wanted too. And what she wanted was Mick.

This was darker, grittier, bloodier than I had been expecting (I’m lying, I totally stalk Jennifer’s updates so I was expecting the darkness), but it was so amazingly well written, you end up rooting for the bad guys. Because this isn’t like Lakefield, where the guys toe the line and sometimes blur it to their advantage. Mick is a bad guy. Alisa sees it, accepts it, loves him despite the demons that hold him back.

Everything about this book felt natural. The progression, the emotion, the bonds that were created. It was the definition of “page-turner”. If you’ve read my other reviews of Jennifer’s books, you know I dubbed her the Queen of Plot Twists… she doesn’t disappoint here either. Every time you think you’ve got something figured out, she twists it up on you, leaving you like one of Pavlov’s dogs, drooling at the sight of a new release.

And if you’re looking for a dark book that can make your glasses fog… look no further. Alisa and Mick burn the sheets in ways that had me reaching for a little paper fan in the middle of the night.

This book has it ALL.

Mick doesn't know what he is going to do, all he knows is he can't be an FBI agent anymore. What he has seen and done has blackened his soul. He keeps to the shadows and returns to his hometown to figure out his next move. Dragged out to a local nightclub by his brother, he is stunned by a ray of sunshine named Alisa who drags him out of his depression. Determined to protect Alisa from the world, he cannot help but ask her out. When he finds out that darkness is surrounding her, he is obsessed with keeping her safe. Will Alisa accept him and how far he is willing to go in order to accomplish that?

I gotta say, Jennifer Vester is beyond book crack! She is book meth, heroine and crack combined. I am seriously addicted to the magic that comes out of her computer. I have binged on the first 4 of her Lakefield series, which were phenomenal. This is a romantic suspense in truest sense of the word. The romance does not take a back seat to the suspense, the two are woven together seamlessly. I absolutely loved this book. Mick is so hot and Alisa surprised me with her strength. The two of them together were amazing. The secondary characters, especially Mick's brother Mason and Alisa's brother Alex were intriguing. I am sure they will be getting their own books, hopefully soon. If you enjoy Kristen Ashley or Harper Sloan, please treat yourself to Mick. 6 stars for Mick!

Holy freaking god! We meet Mick in the last book in the Lakefield series. You could just tell that his book was going to be grittier and darker than those.
With this being said I LOVE MICK! Hot Damn that man has it. The looks and definitely the alpha domineering demeanor that is freaking off the charts. The book starts off with Mick unsure of what he is going to do. He is kinda stuck in limbo with the actions that took place before he left the bureau. In walks Alisa the light to his very dark soul. She is so sweet and innocent that he feels the need to protect her at all cost. Even if that means protecting her from himself. Alisa being so warm hearted and just a little bit naive does not give up on him. She comes from a very influential family that lets just say is not very nice. There are a few situations that make Mick realize there is more to life than finding yourself at the bottom of a bottle.
I will not give spoilers, because I feel you should read the book for yourself and discover just how awesome this book really is. This book is not just a romance, but also a great mystery.
This is definitely a great start to a series, and I can't wait for the next one.

Jennifer Vester you have outdone yourself with this story! I thought it would be hard for you to top your Lakefield series but I was wrong! While everyone should read that series if they haven’t because it is fantastic, this book is a phenomenal start to a new series of corruption and greed that will change the way you think. It is gritty, dark and full of heat that stirs up all your emotions and you will love the ride Jen takes you on.

Ms. Vester is the queen of plot twists and just when you think this story can’t get any better she will blow your mind.I couldn’t put down this page turner and everyone will devour this story in one sitting. This book is raw, intriguing, sexy and intoxicating and I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. I wish I could read this book all over again and I am sad that it is over. Jennifer your story telling ability is natural and it shows as your talent brings these stories to life like we are living and breathing them with the characters. Mick is a stand out story that everyone will be talking about and is one of my all time favorites of 2018!

Omg I freaking loved this book, Mick is dark and broody after his last case at the FBI crushed him, he moves back to his home to town and in with his brother Mason while he continues to drink himself into oblivion. Things change when his Dad Chief of Police tricks him into going to a crime scene, thats not the turning point its the girl he meets at the bar he goes to afterwards to have a drink with his brother. There he meets Alisa and while trying to scare her of what can be lurking out there he falls for her and she for him. Soon he finds out there is more to Alisa and her family and now Mick has a purpose again in life but the things that he, Mason, the mysterious and closed off Jack as well as Alisa's brother Alex will have to do may be too much for Alisa as she will find out what steps Mick is willing to take and they aren't all above board. I can not wait to see what happens next for these guys as they continue to try and bring down the ruthless empire that is run by the King family.

This book was extraordinary and it blew me away. When the author announced that readers should expect something different from this book I was looking forward to it. I never expected how much I would love this book. Mick is darker than her previews books but it is so good. I was only supposed to read a chapter of it but I spent all night reading this book. Running on two hours of sleep was exhausting but it was worth it. Mick was such a strong hero. After leaving the FBI he returns home. Mick witnessed something that made his soul darken. In comes sweet Alisa who Mick thinks he will ruin if he gets too close to her. Alisa comes from a very corrupt family but Mick is willing to do anything to protect her no matter what line he has to cross. But will Alisa accept him after she knows how far he is willing to go to protect her ? This is definitely a must read and I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Mick never pretended to be a nice guy, tried to scare er off and let her know it was best but it was too late. The line had been crossed and there was no turning back. Things were no longer black and white they had crossed into enemy territory and it was on. Alisa was a King after all and that should make a difference. These two and their stories. I love this author and the characters she sets loose on us. They are characters with issues and emotions and it just makes for good gritty reading especially with the intrigue and adventure going on.

This is a hard core start of a new series. There is a sub story that will flow throughout but they really are standalone reads but completely worth the read. This author has included every component needed to make this story emotional and a great read.

After reading The Lakefield Series, Mick goes in a totally new direction. Jennifer takes us on a dark and twisted roller coaster of a ride.
After Mick leaves the FBI he gets more lost in his life and turns from the good man he was to one who indulges in a corrupt and unlawful way. Whatever happened to him turned his life totally around and now he thinks he doesn’t deserve anyone or anything good.
Alisa just home from college meets Mick and knows he is for her. No matter who or what he does or is into she loves him. She knows she will be what he needs to help bring him back to life.
This book was a pleasant surprise from Jennifer Vester. Going deep into the dark underworld of Kingston and the lives of two special people. Mick is a must read and hopefully we get the rest of the characters stories soon to see how everyone plays into the plot. Congratulations on a very well written story.

I think what makes me gives books like this 5 stars is because of how damn well the author writes it - no matter how many times I’ve seen similar story-lines....it is about how it is written and this is an example.

I love everything about Jennifer Vester’s writing - it is so appealing to me that I find myself reading from start to finish in one sitting.

The alpha persona in each of the strong male heroes in each series she’s written, is uniquely distinctive to the point where I can actually visualise the man himself - I am a sucker for character castings, so it helped me a lot to get stuck in the story.

I am super excited for Alex - I still haven’t grasped the type of person he is, but it will be interesting to see what his POV is.

Mick ... what a fantastic surprise.
This book is a close relative of the author’s previous Lakefield series. These characters are developed in the same way.. they have great depth and the story that is built will continue in the subsequent books.
Mick’s time in the FBI has left him broken... but when he meets Alisa his need to protect her .. even from himself is all consuming.
Alisa comes from the most powerful family in their small town... her family is brutal and a huge problem for her to escape.
She is light to Mick’s darkness... their connection is intense and gives the reader butterflies.
Looking forward to Alex’s story’s

I was provided an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.....
I loved the guys from Lakefield, those alpha H’s that were intensely loyal, uber protective, passionate men....swoon 😊. BUT, Take all those things and add to it men with a dark side, willing to take on corruption and defending those that need it, any way they can. The men of Kingston are just those kind of men........SWOON!! 🤗 Mick and Alisa are well written, complex characters. The book, after the first couple of chapters, is well paced, twists, turns, and introductions to some really dispicable ongoing characters. If Jennifer Vester can maintain this intensity, she has another great series on her hands.

OMH! Mick & Alisa's story is SO GOOD!!! Mick is in a dark place, but Alisa is his light & from minute one they're a fabulous couple. This story is intense yet easy to read, steamy yet sweet. Along w/ the romance, there is a great world being built, one where the lines between right & wrong get a bit smudged. Sometimes you have to do the conventionally wrong thing for the always right reasons. And oh the journey to their HEA - and the introduction of so many other characters I want to see have their own stories!!

Thumbs WAY up for this one! Definitely a favorite! : )

WOW! We first got a tease of Mick in the Lakefield series. Now we get to read about him. This book is darker and gritter than you may be used to if you are a fan of Jennifer Vester's. But is it worth every second of your time! This book will grab you by the throat and not let go until the end and leave you wanting MORE! I can't wait for the next book in this series.

I loved this story. It’s about Mick and Alisa they meet at a bar not her usual kind of place. Mick could tell she didn’t belong and he felt the need to protect her. Mick has a dark background from things he has seen and done being in the FBI. Alisa might just be the ray of sunshine he needs.

You meet Mick in the last book of that series, and you can tell he's a little bit darker than those guys but in this one you see just how much darker. His job at the FBI left him with some mental scars, and because of something that happened in his job he left the FBI and returned home to Kingston. A city that's filled and fueled with corruption and greed, and run by the King family.
Alisa just got home from college and is out with her cousin when she meets Mick at a club. After some drinks, talking, and touching (nothing big) they part ways with numbers exchanged.
Alisa is sunshine to Mick's darkness, and it's fate or kismet in my opinion. Meant to be. But Mick is damaged, and Alisa is pure. When her life is put on the line will Alisa be able to handle his darkness when she sees it firsthand? Or will Mick find exactly what he's been looking for in Alisa.
Don't trip when you read this, but this is NOT like the Lakefield series. (If you haven't read the Lakefield series get on that stat!!) It's way different, but it's so very good. This is a bit darker than she normally writes, but I highly applaud her on this one. I hope she continues on the route as this is one of her best book by far. Is is absolutely no doubt a 5 🌟 for me. Kudos to the author on this one.
