The Weird: A Supernatural Horror

Rate this book
Critically acclaimed bestselling author, Matt Shaw - #1 bestseller in Horror Fiction with hundreds of 5 star reviews.

There's something in the shadows which lurks there unseen except on the odd occasion when we think we see them in the corner of our eye. We turn to look but there is nothing there. At least that's what we think. But they're always there and they're always watching and waiting and shaping our dreams into the nightmares based upon our weirdest phobias... Their goal is simple; to scare us to death so that our souls burst from within leaving nothing but an empty space for them to fill.

When we wake in the morning, we are no longer the same person. We are gone, trapped in the shadows...

Biography

MATT SHAW was born, quite by accident (his mother tripped, he shot out) September 30th 1980 in Winchester hospital where he was immediately placed on the baby ward and EBay. Some twelve years later (wandering the corridors of the hospital and playing with road kill when he was on day release), the listing closed and he remained unsold, he was booted out of the hospital to start his life as a writer and hobbit – beginning with writing screenplays and short stories for his own amusement before finally getting published when he was twenty-seven years and forty-five seconds old.

Once Published weekly in a lad's magazine with his photography work, Matt Shaw is also a published author and cartoonist. Has to be said, can be a bit of a flirt and definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, somewhat of a klutz.

With only 55 pages, I couldn’t fathom why there was so many digression, like how Sarah didn’t like to pack.

I don’t have a ton of thoughts on this one. Shaw is really hit or miss. A chunk of his books feel very rushed, despite having really intriguing premises. This had a ton of promise, but desperately needed more editing on both a copy and developmental level. Nothing was done badly, but everything just felt very uninteresting and forced. And the ending just came across as like a ‘what’s a quick way to wrap this up’ sort of affair. Very underwhelming, to say the least. Not Shaw’s best, so taper expectations going in.

um....i think the reason i am giving this such a low rating is because of the typos i found in it...the repetition of sentences literally one after the other. and also...WHAT? lol i feel as though this story would have been a much better movie than it is a book. this will not deter me from reading more Matt Shaw, though.

Enough to give you nightmares.

Well another great book from Mr Shaw. Strange, freaky and shocking. Makes you think about those spa retreats 😁 A good read with a different and unusual storyline that keeps it exciting. Never knowing which way it's going to go or what shocking ending is going to come. Always a pleasure to read his books and this is no exception.

Short but good story. I liked the gory creepy descriptions. I wish it would have been a longer book.

A disgusting insight into the absurdity of what some of us fear.

Read in one sitting, it's been a while since I managed such accomplishment. 🤓

Matt Shaw has been on my radar for a while, as the kind of horror writer I would enjoy. I bought a few of his novellas, and picked up "The Weird" at random tonight, only to read it in one sitting.
So I guess you can say it was good !

It was fast-paced, going straight into action in the very first page.
I enjoyed it, and the story was told in a way that makes you want to keep turning the pages.
But for a novella to blow me away, I need a bit more though.
Also, quite a few typos and words missing, which is always a shame when reading a book.

Still, will read more from him, I think he's got a great voice in the horror genre, it was quite original.

“Thank you for a pleasant evening. I hope you all have the same outcome they did.”

Set somewhere in England.

A spa retreat that claims it will cure people of their (very unusual) phobias.

For a disparate group of troubled folks, mysterious invites begin to arrive.

The characters are thin, but they include:

Sarah (36) - balloons
Russell (34) - period blood
Corrina (45) - fish

Jacqueline, the creepy group leader.

The pretty girl. And the shadows…

The nightmares—for all the guests—continue. And escalate.

Menacing location, with odd behavior all around. (The phobias are the least of it.)

Weird certainly lives up to its title.

Bizarre. Weak explanation. Asinine ending.

I know now…They’re in the shadows. They’ve always been there. It’s just now they’ve found a way to come out from where they lurk…

I’d give this book a 1.5-low 2 on a good day. Was it terrible? Repeat sentences and misspellings aside, no. However if you’ve ever seen The Faculty (1998 movie) you’ve essentially seen the same trope, different entities.

This book isn’t really all that good. I gave it two stars only because I’m in it.

sorry for the low review……

I’m a big fan for Matt shaw but this book dragged all the way thru. Not very scary and it was more a sci fi book.

It was an interesting idea and could have been done better. There was inconsistencies in the story that took the enjoyment out of it for me.
