Heart of the Mountains #4

This Courageous Journey

Rate this book
As the fifth daughter in a family of nine, Noelle Grant spent her life striving to be unique. Her love of telling stories helps define her goal—to be known around the country as one of the top news correspondents of her time. And what better way to uncover sensational tales than to travel through the mountain wilderness to visit her brother? The trip comes together perfectly as she journeys with family friends who will be settling in the same area. Her first inkling that things may not be as perfect as she’d imagined shows up in the form of the mountain man hired as their guide for the final leg of the journey.

When Daniel Abrams agrees to guide the small group of easterners along his usual route northward to the Canadian mountains, his gut tells him he’s making a terrible decision. But if he doesn’t take them, who will? The crew’s leader refuses to consider turning back. As they start out, Daniel can’t help but notice the woman traveling under the care of her friends. Though she appears too genteel to last long in these mountains, she soon reveals a strength that draws him more than he should allow.

When the dangers of this wilderness become more than the group bargained for, Noelle must choose to delay her trip northward or proceed alone with the man she’s come to trust against all reason. She never dreams her decision will place her—and the man she loves—in a situation more hazardous than any story her imagination could conjure.

I can always count on this author to take me on an adventure in the wilderness! The harsh circumstances bring out the true qualities of the characters, and it's rewarding when they learn that they are stronger than they ever imagined. Noelle is a woman of determination, and she takes it in stride when the plans for her journey go awry. I appreciated that she took the time to pray and feel guidance from the Lord for her decision to keep going and trust Daniel. This is when the story really picks up, and the seemingly never-ending series of dangerous obstacles facing them draws them closer together where they must rely on each other for survival against the looming winter storms as they struggle through the mountains toward their destination. Even though this is a series and the characters in each book are loosely connected, they can be read as stand-alones.

In This Courageous Journey, we meet Simeon’s little sister Noelle Grant (don’t worry though – you can definitely read this as a stand alone too) and her group’s wilderness guide Daniel Abrams. As in each of these Heart of the Mountains books, the journey through the Canadian Rockies is treacherous and gives me a new appreciation for those who braved the often-fatal terrain to forge a new life. With my relatively pampered life in comparison, i don’t think i would have even made it up on the horse, much less lasted more than a day through blizzards and grizzly bears and storms and bobcats and all the hazards that go along with each of those. These characters and their courage – knowing that, while Noelle and Daniel are fictional, there were real people who endured these journies – is so inspiring.

The setting might have varied weather extremes – from lightning and thunder to waist-deep snow and frigid temps – but the romantic tension sizzles and sparks and really should have melted all the ice and snow they encountered. Those kisses. Whew. Beller excels at building the tension until it just can’t go anywhere except a kiss and raspy voices that mutter “You undo me, woman”. SWOON. And yet at the same time, there is an exquisite tenderness that undergirds and motivates the passion, making their journey – from strangers to friends to more – one that readers will root for from the beginning.

Tucked away in the adventure and romance is a gentle thread of faith that has a two-fold message. One is that God is with us, even when things seem to be getting worse instead of better. He’s there. He’s good. And He loves us dearly. The other part of the thread is a tender reminder that the way we see ourselves, even the way others see us, is a pale – and often inaccurate – reflection of the strength and worth God sees when He looks at us. And since we are never outside of His watch, our truest self is held there in His heart for us to find as we know Him (and ourselves) better along the journey.

Bottom Line: If you have not yet discovered this edge-of-your-seat, heart-in-your-throat series you are really missing out. I experienced the whole gamut of emotions while reading This Courageous Journey – moments that had me gasping out loud in shock, sighing in (sometimes very short-lived) relief, swooning at the passionate kisses and love, and even nearly praying for their safety. That’s how invested I was in this story and the characters that Beller has so skillfully crafted. Adventure, humor, romance, and faith are all a part of this riveting novel which is not to be missed!

High steaks, high emotions, and high adventure! This story pulled me in, the descriptions and the setting painted a beautiful picture in my imagination. The dynamic characters held my attention, and had me cheering for their successes and holding my breath when they found themselves in tight spots.

These characters took a hold of my heart and had me completely invested in their lives, they gave of themselves to see to the care of others and served as a reminder of how we should treat each other. On one hand I couldn't seem to turn the pages fast enough to find out what would happen next. On the other hand I didn't want to reach the end and have to say goodbye.

Even though this story is #4 in the series, you can read it as a stand-alone and not feel lost. I haven't yet read the first two books, and I'm eager to fit them into my reading schedule. I give this story 5-stars and highly recommend that you make time to read this story!

Wow what a journey you are about to begin as you turn the pages of this action-packed book. This is the fourth book in this series, but you can read as a stand-alone, but you might not want to!
Besides blinding snow and bitterly cold weather, the author shows us compassion for fellow man, when one is hit by lightning, wow, you wonder about survival, but concern is for helping the injured one.
The author entertains us right to the end, and I have really enjoyed this series, the majestic beauty of the Rockies, as this story takes place in both the US and Canada, and how God is present throughout the travels.
As we journey along with this group, then couple, you will never see what around the bend!

This Courageous Journey was quite a read and the second book I have read recently where I was feeling the effects of the story. For instance if the author was describing a very cold scene, I got really cold. My feet got so numb reading this story I thought they would never thaw.

But what a story it was. Noelle, setting off on a journey with another family and their guide, Daniel, could not possibly realize how harrowing her journey would be (I wonder that if she did, would she have just stayed home?). Noelle is headed to her brother’s place in Canada and also to see that her dreams are fulfilled by writing for a well-known paper the adventure stories of all those she meets.

Daniel is quite an enigma to her and at first he remains a closed book to her. As their adventure continues and becomes all the more perilous, Noelle and Daniel realize how much they need each other on this journey and possibly the journey of life.

The things author Beller put these poor characters through had my fingers turning those pages fast and furious. The story of Daniel and Noelle and their adventure will stay with me for quite some time.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

The wilderness landscape and perilous winter weather play a major role in the adventure and romance which unfolds across the American and Canadian Rockies.

Noelle is a driven and determined young lady with big plans and dreams. Daniel's unique heritage creates an additional layer of vulnerable authenticity to his rugged mountain-man persona.

As always it's a joy to revisit old friends and Beller delights faithful fans with these throwback moments to previous installments without alienating new readers in the process. This Courageous Journey is an excellent addition to the Heart of the Mountains series.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and was under no obligation to post a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Noelle Grant, trying to make a name for herself as a journalist, decides to travel to see her brother in the Canadian wilderness. Her guide, Daniel Abrams part Indian, doesn't seem to think she will survive the trip. When the rest of the family friends decide not to make the full trip, Noelle and David head out across the mountains alone.

This is a beautiful story of two people from very different backgrounds that discover that God's plan for their lives just might include a future together.

The descriptions of the Canadian wilderness are amazing. The story is filled with worry, courage, strength, trust, and lots of struggle. This Courageous Journey is a beautiful love story. The Christian element comes through which makes it inspiring and a story filled with hope.

This Courageous Journey was a story that was hard for me to set down. I loved returning to the wilderness setting, fraught with dangers and difficulties. This is the fourth book in the Heart of the Mountains series, yet it is easily read as a stand alone novel if you haven’t read the other books.

Noelle and Daniel were characters that I really enjoyed reading about and their journey was one with plenty of situations that I didn’t see coming. Noelle was an amazingly strong and resiliant character. I was impressed with all that she had to persevere through in this novel. The emotional and spiritual journey that Daniel ended up taking while on this trek was quite moving, as well. I definitely recommend This Courageous Journey, as well as all of the books in this series, to those who enjoy historical romance novels.

THIS COURAGEOUS JOURNEY is the story of a woman who desires to be a journalist and the man who takes her on a dangerous journey to her brother in Canada. The characters are easy to fall in love with, the plot is full of twists and danger, and the romance is sweet and heartfelt. An overall enjoyable journey for inspirational romance readers.

I adored Noelle and Daniel! They are both fabulous characters with their own insecurities, strengths, and dreams. I love how they began a little at odds, but developed a friendship and then love over the time they were together. They face some obstacles in their journey and their relationship, but pushed through showing their strength and love for each other. There are some emotional moments and some places that really tugged on my heart. The romance was so sweet and I could feel the chemistry between these two quite easily. The inspirational aspect of the story was on the lighter side until the end when it's a little stronger.

I had very few complaints with this story. I did want a little more depth with some of the characters. Bo felt rather vague to me as to his age and personality, as did some of the other secondary characters. I didn't feel they needed stronger roles, but I did want them to be more defined, especially as not having read any of the previous books in the series. I did feel one part of the inspirational aspect was a little abrupt (in the cabin with Noelle and Daniel towards the end of the book). I think it just needed to be worked in a little better, but otherwise I enjoyed this aspect of the story.

In the end, was it what I wished for? This story had some exciting twists, an emotional pull, great characters, and a sweet romance making for a truly enjoyable story! I really loved these characters, the romance, and how the story played out in a treacherous journey to Canada. I hope to read the other books in this series and will be looking for this author's next release.

“This Courageous Journey” is the first book I have read by author Misty Beller, but it will not be the last. While this was Book 3 in her Heart of the Mountains Series, it can easily be as a stand-alone. This reader loved it so much I am going back to read the other books now.

Author Beller is a talented storyteller. I quickly became invested in this book and stayed that way until the end. My emotions were all over the place while reading this book. I felt like I was on the journey with Noelle and Daniel. Frightened, happy, cold, excited, scared, tense, exhilarated, intrigued, worn out, awed, and even extreme romantic tension all transferred from the pages of this book into me.

This is the tale of Noelle Grant who ventures through the Canadian Rockies with family friends to see her brother. Their guide, Daniel Abrams, is a rough mountain man, but when the two get together sparks fly. The journey is filled with danger and breathtaking adventure. They encounter fierce wild animals, severe weather, treacherous trails, and many trials. It took courage and faith to complete the trip.

The author did a fabulous job with her story. It was well researched, planned, and written. I love learning things from fiction books I read. This one taught me things I did not know. The author’s style of writing is nice. It flows smoothly and is easy to follow. Characters are well defined. I enjoyed the faith that Noelle had. If it is a Christian novel, I expect there to be some mention of faith, God, and prayer. This one excelled there. There are lessons in this book. God is faithful and always with us. When we do not know what to do, we should ask God for guidance. God gives us strength to carry on.

If you are a fan of love stories, do not miss this one. The tension is so thick between Noelle and Daniel that I could feel it as I read. When he said “woman, you undo me” I started cheering her. When they kissed, oh, my! Oh, my! Author Beller knows her way around a good romance.

I highly recommend this page turning book. It is adventurous, romantic, historic, and inspirational. The book sweeps you up and takes you on a perilous journey across the Canadian mountains during a time you can only imagine. By the end of it, you feel like you have experienced it. It gets a 5 out of 5 stars from me. Celebrate Lit provided a copy of the book but I was under no obligation to write a review. These are my own, honest opinions.

This has been a wonderful book to read. Noelle is a great character and she made the story so enjoyable to read. I loved her strength, endurance and determination. The author does an amazing job of describing the journey Noelle took . I love reading stories like this because it reminds me of my granddad. He traveled many miles in the 1800s to homestead his land. Like Noelle he had a treacherous journey that at times he said was discouraging.

Daniel is a good man who has taken on the task of getting Noelle safely to her destination. He is very good at steering Noelle in the mountains and watching out for her. I loved reading about the wilderness and having to hunt for food. The author paints a perfect picture of what it was like to be out there in the snow, rain and rough terrain. I love the mountains, but I'm sure I couldn't have survived what Noelle and Daniel went through.

The story does not lack adventure when Noelle finds herself having to step up and help Daniel out when an injury occurs. Her courage was incredible and I loved how she never gave up. Her love for God was evident and she relied on Him to keep her going. She started her journey as a young woman who was unsure of herself to a confidant woman who continued with her journey, even though obstacles tried to stop her. I would love to have the courage she had. The story showed me how God is always there and faith will sustain you.

Daniel and Noelle each go through trials and I admired how they leaned on each other, but also turned to God. There is romance in the book but it certainly isn't the focus of the story. If you are looking for a story about determination, courageous and trust, this is the perfect book to read.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

You can't go wrong with Misty Beller's books. If you have been reading the Heart of the Mountains series, this wonderful story of Daniel and Noelle will re-engage your heart and mind as they travel through the wintery wilderness from Montana Territory to Canada in the mid-1800s. If you have never read Misty Beller's writing, this book is an excellent sample of her storytelling and it can be read as a stand alone though it is book 4 in the series. No matter how many times I've read her books, the author never fails to amaze me in her world-building and creating the backdrop setting of stark wintery beauty of the mountainous wilderness as it displays the majesty of the One who created it all. The coming-of-faith component in the plot is tender, real, and believable. The characters are flawed but so lovable.

Daniel is a loyal, steadfast, and tough mountainman born and reared in the wilderness. He's a loner by nature and has a tough time getting past his heritage. Despite his taciturn and introverted nature, Daniel is quite likable and admirable in character and Noelle, though the opposite in temperament, falls in love with her guide. Noelle's bright and optimistic outlook, as well as her strong faith and resourcefulness, endears her to the wearied soul that Daniel is and a sweet yet tumultuous romance develops between these two who never set out looking for love. It is also nice to see the other characters from the series make appearances in the book and I look forward to the next one, which will feature Noelle and Simeon's brother.

I received a copy of the book from the author/publisher as well as via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

As I was reading this particular book because it took me back to when my family and I took a trip out west in 2005-2006.
Fortunately we didn't encounter any bad weather but we couldn't take the horses up the Great Divide because there was about 20 ft. of snow on top. From where we stood we could actually see the snow. (I've got pictures somewhere). I was like bummer!! But at the same time, I understood. At least we could see it. We did however get to ride the horses in the lower elevations so I knew what Noelle must've felt as she rode through the Rockies. My son even got his own horse and he was 4 at the time.

I admired Noelle's courage and I especially loved that she kept a journal. (Maybe she's got a great idea). It might help relieve stress on some days.

Noelle a woman who has a strong faith and courage, especially going into the mountains. The guide Daniel the conditions of blizzard, uneven terrain, animals was definitely not for the faint hearted person. Her book she gave a good detail account of what they endured. I love to read.  Books are so very important to me.  I discovered a group that reviews books by new and established authors.  I have been a member for over a year and have enjoyed the privilege of reading books by Misty Beller.

I love this series.  How can you not love Daniel and Noelle?  Daniel is smart, quiet, strong and handsome.  Noelle is dainty but has a strength that can get her through the toughest of times.

Daniel and Noelle can conquer any obstacle together.  GOD was with them on their journey.  He made sure they were safe from harm.  With GOD anything was possible.

I received this free to review.

Guest Post from Misty

Ever Been Struck by Lightning?

One of the fun things about being a writer is the crazy topics I get to research. Without giving away too much of the story, part of my research for This Courageous Journey included uncovering what happens when lightning strikes a person. It turns out anything can happen!

Surprisingly, about nine out of ten people struck by lightning live to tell their story. Each person’s experience seems to be different—some are knocked unconscious, while others are horribly aware of everything happening. One person who was struck said it seemed as if time slowed to a crawl and a white haze surrounded him like a bubble, as excruciating pain shot through him.

People usually try to determine the path the lightning traveled through them, based on where burn marks appear on both skin and clothing, but sometimes that can be difficult if jewelry or coins were touching the body. Survivors might suffer a variety of short- and long-term effects, including—but not limited to—cardiac arrest, confusion, seizures, dizziness, muscle aches, deafness, headaches, memory deficits, distractibility, personality changes, and chronic pain, among others. That may sound like an awful list, but it does beat the alternative!

As I considered the possible effects of a lightning strike when I was writing This Courageous Journey, I was reminded once again how magnificent God’s creation is. Both the incredible power contained in one streak of lightning, and the beautiful inner workings of the bodies He created for us. As the Psalmist said, we are “fearfully and wonderfully made!”

This Courageous Journey is engaging, interesting, and while true to the historical fiction style I love, it also had a fresh and different tone to it. Misty M. Beller has written the Heart of the Mountains series, and while I haven’t read the first three books I thoroughly enjoyed this one on it’s own and now will be reading the entire series! I am so glad I listened to the other readers on the blog tour when they advised this was a book to read and that I didn’t need to read the others in the series to thoroughly enjoy the book. I was so excited to pick this book up at any chance I had. I found the characters refreshing and interesting. While complex there was also a simplicity to them that made them believable and by the end of the story I felt like I knew them and had made new friends of Daniel and Noelle the main characters. I love that Beller explores race relations, social expectations, and also the struggle with how God wires and how that can conflict with the world. You’re sure to find something to challenge your thinking or inspire you.

I will say, I recently read a novella that took place on a wagon train, it was called “The Christmas Prayer,” and while I reviewed the story as good, I also reported that I was left wanting more. The good news is THIS book provided it! Also set on a wagon train I was able to dream with the characters, delve more into who they are and the relationship dynamics they were creating and to really know where their story would take them. All the areas I was left wanting more with the short novella by Wanda E. Brunstetter this book took me there and beyond. (That being said I still recommend The Christmas Prayer as a quick seasonal read.) The authors are different and the stories, ultimately not the same, but since the setting was so similar it was the perfect book to pick up now to satiate my desire for more.

I also love the unexpected twists (read more of Misty’s guest post on my blog for a sneak peek, and find her $50 gift card giveaway!) the deep relationships, and the internal struggles that the characters are processing. This novel fulfilled those desires and then some. The book lead me to Misty’s website, and she will gift you the first book in the series for free. But be prepared you’ll end up wanting to pick up the others too. I can’t wait to dive into the other stories in the series and am so excited about another new and exciting series she has coming out.

On a formatting note I love that this book is a bit larger and with larger font. Again a refreshing change. And I really enjoyed that each chapter began with a guiding thought from a character, and also journal entries from Noelle’s heart. It make the story engaging and interesting.

Whether you want a bit of romance, an engaging story to escape with, or a wee glimpse into history this is one to grab!

Thanks to Celebrate Lit Blogging for gifting me to book in exchange for my honest review.

A treacherous journey through the Rocky Mountains

My rating is 4.5 stars

Noelle had a close relationship with the Lord. When faced with the need to decide whether to continue her journey with just Daniel or to delay until her brother can accompany them, she cries out to God for wisdom and direction.

I was amazed at Noelle’s strength in adversity. When faced with seemingly impossible circumstances, she sought the Lord’s help and did her best. She wasn’t always unafraid but seemed to know that in the rugged, snowy wilderness, giving up or not trying was equal to a death sentence. Yet despite that, she was insecure and longed to be in a place where she could make a difference. To matter.

Daniel was most confident in the wilderness – alone. The skills he learned from his Father’s people, the Blackfeet, served him well. Yet the fact that he was Indian and Caucasian made him feel that he didn’t have a part of either world. He was fearful of being judged for who he was.

There were so many things to appreciate about this story. The spiritual lessons were inspiring and integrated very naturally. The descriptions of the majesty of the Rocky Mountains, the blizzards, and the perils made me feel as if I was there and gave me a sense of the vastness and isolation of the region. I don’t recall ever before having a story convey the sense of what it would be like to be completely and truly lost in the mountains in the winter, yet my reading of This Courageous Journey did that quite well.

I have read other books where the travelers encounter one problem after another and, frankly, they left me feeling like everything was overdone, unrealistic, and contrived. Despite the fact that Daniel, Noelle and their companions faced hardship after sickness after peril after near disaster, this made sense and worked well in the narration.

Daniel and Noelle’s growing attraction for each other also came very naturally. Fighting the elements in the way they did, as well as spending significant amounts of time together is bound to either cause two people to develop a close bond or to hate each other! Their caring for one another as they journeyed touched my heart.

Another fantastic journey in the Heart of the Mountains series. This is book 4 and we get to travel with Simeon Grant's baby sister Noelle and her friends and keepers along a treacherous journey headed into the Canadian mountains to join her brother and his family. Noelle has always had an adventurous heart and mind but thus far has yet to achieve what she feels is life worthy. She plans to be a writer and send sensational stories back east to newspapers to become famous and also share with readers what this vast wilderness is truly like.

Daniel Abrams is a trapper and has also guided groups into his homeland but he isn't sure about this ragtag group he has agreed to get into the Canadian mountains to family. They set out and things go pretty well for the most part but the mother and child in the group become ill and when they arrive at a small fort the family chooses to stay there instead of continue on the difficult journey. Noelle is determined to press on and join her brother and his family and the only logical solution to her is for her to travel with Daniel the rest of the way. Not far into their trip things fall apart and Noelle is tested to her limits along with Daniel but God sees them through and together they survive.

I loved everything about this story. To watch Noelle grow from what would appear as a pampered young woman that wouldn't survive a snowstorm to being the take charge woman she was and to see Daniel open his wounded heart and finally give it was beautiful. This is the best series, they are all standalone books but you really should read the others they are all so beautifully written and give us a vivid picture of what life must have been like during this time and how our ancestors survived. I received an early copy to read and review and give my honest opinion. I loved this book and highly recommend it.

BACK OF THE BOOK BLURB
(copied from Amazon.com)

A Christian Historical Romance Novel

As the fifth daughter in a family of nine, Noelle Grant spent her life striving to be unique. Her love of telling stories helps define her goal--to be known around the country as one of the top news correspondents of her time. And what better way to uncover sensational tales than to travel through the mountain wilderness to visit her brother? The trip comes together perfectly as she journeys with family friends who will be settling in the same area. Her fist inkling that things may not be as perfect as she'd imagined shows up in the form of the mountain man hired as their guide for the final leg of the journey.

When Daniel Abrams agrees to guide the small group of easterners along his usual route northward to the Canadian mountains, his gut tells him he's making a terrible decision. But if he doesn't take them who will? The crew's leader refuses to consider turning back. As they start out, Daniel can't help but notice the woman traveling under the care of her friends. Though she appears too genteel to last long in these mountains, she soon reveals a strength that draws him more than he should allow.

When the dangers of this wilderness become more than the group bargained for, Noelle must choose to delay her trip northward or proceed alone with the man she's come to trust against all reason. She never dreams her decision will place her--and the man she loves--in a situation more hazardous than any story her imagination could conjure.

MY REVIEW

This is another great story about traveling the wilderness with the faith to get you through the many set backs. rough terrain and determination to keep moving. Like they say 'Faith can move mountains'. Another winner for Misty, so far there are seven books in the series, I have now read four and enjoyed each one!

MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK

This Courageous Journey is the fourth amazing book in the Heart of the Mountain Series by Misty Beller. And Miss Beller’s Writing just keeps getting better and better. Join Ms. Beller as she takes you on another journey though the beautiful Canadian mountains.

Through her love of stories, Noelle Grant decides to visit her brother. Hehr brother that lives in the Canadian mountains wilderness. This journey should sure give her some stories to write about! And a Trapper in this wilderness, Daniel Abrams agrees to guide the small group of easterners along his usual journey, but this time, the journey was a very difficult one for everyone. After they have traveled a long bit, some choose to stay at a small fort the group has stopped at. Both Noelle and Daniel face challenges that make them wonder where they will end up on this journey. This is truly a book that the characters need to trust God for their every move. I love that Ms. Beller weaves the Christian life, trusting God in all of our situations and just depending on God for everything.

And I’m not really one to give away a lot of the plot, so I’ll just encourage you to pick this book up and read it! You will fall in love with these characters, just as I did. And you will be pulled into this amazing story more and more as the story goes on. I hope this is not the end of this series! I would love to read more of these Canadian Wilderness stories!!

Misty Beller continues to amaze me. I enjoy her writing so much that it's like spending a weekend with my best friend. We go on an adventure (crazy weather involved as well), we cry, we laugh, and we share stories of swoony kisses and moments. Okay, I'm not sharing I'm just reading, but you get the picture. I have been completely mesmerized with this series, and I hope there is more coming!

Danger, adventure and romance aside, the thing that pulls me into Beller's books is her characters, heroines specifically. I think each book shows an even stronger heroine then the last and Noelle is probably the strongest of them all. Beller continues to masterfully write a women who is strong, yet sensitive. Capable, yet vulnerable. She write a character that we can all empathize with and yet stand in awe of at the same time. I'm not quite sure how she manages to capture them all this way, but she does and beautifully so.

Each story in this series gets a little more dangerous than the past. Lightning striking? Yeah, it doesn't get more dangerous than that! But that is just a small piece of the adventure. There's romance too, and the heat is turned up with this installment. No need to worry romance fans - Beller delivers in some surprising ways. Overall, this is a story that will capture your attention, and leave you hanging on the edge of your seat until the very end. Beller is an author that I always enjoy reading, and one that I know I'm going to love!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This Courageous Journey by Misty Beller pulled me into the story from the moment I began reading. Noelle Grant and Daniel Abrams possess a determination and drive that made me want to read more to find out how everything ended. Noelle is the 5th of nine children and aims to move to Canada where her oldest brother is with his own family. From illness to Indians to lightning strikes and even blizzards and more the adventure never quits. I found myself desiring these two characters to get together. Rather than being absolutely perfect, they both possess a realistic nature that pulled me into the story.

This book is the fourth book in Misty Beller’s Heart of the Mountains series. Noelle desires to become a prominent journalist at the beginning of the story. But by the end, she realizes what she truly wanted and needed was to belong. Even though Daniel initially underestimates her ability to adapt to the wild land she is heading for, he comes to recognize her ability to survive.

While Noelle is a definite Christian, Daniel has to come around to that way of thinking. The hardships Daniel has faced in his life truly come to light in the story. Ultimately, his love for Noelle and the faith she has demonstrated bring Daniel to God. The book does not preach at, but rather speaks to the reader.

Truly, this book captivated me from the beginning to the end. I loved how Misty Beller wove the fabric of the story together in a way that made it seem very realistic. If you are looking for a historical book in the Christian genre, check out this book for yourself.

She's determined to go on, can he keep her safe?

It's a little hard to believe that this is the fourth book in the Heart Of The Mountains series, I keep thinking I've listened to only a couple but then I realize that I'm actually half done with the series. Needless to say, I've been enjoying them quite a bit and each one more than the one before.

As with its predecessors This Courageous Journey has a small cast of characters, most of the story features just the hero and heroine. This is something that sets it apart from most historical romances and it's something I really like. It gave Noelle and Daniel the chance to interact, for the romance to develop, instead of just “Hi, nice to meet you, let's get married.” It also gives readers the time to really get to know and like Noelle and Daniel, which is how it went for me.

I've been listening to this series in audiobook form and this one was no exception. I've come to expect a quality production in sound and narration, which, is exactly what I have gotten. The narrator is has been the same so far and I appreciate both the continuity and her pleasant reading voice. She's so easy to listen to and has done full justice to Misty M. Beller's tales of wilderness adventure and romance.

All in all, a good story and a good audiobook. One that I would recommend to any lover of historical romance with a faith message.

At first, I felt that another guide falling-in-love-with-his-guidee troupe is a little over done. HOWEVER, as the story developed Misty brought other unique aspects to this troupe providing opportunities not just for the hero to save the day, but also the heroine. While at times you could predict the next turn, I still found myself turning the pages wondering how the story would arrive.

Noelle is a heroine who enjoys her femininity, but also rises to the occasion; she has a tough backbone, but isn't rough. The journal entries provide a glimpse into her thoughts where she shows honest reluctance at some of the new experiences while also showing a willingness to encounter new experiences with an open mind. Faith wraps her life, but, as many of us do, in the trying to get through everyday she loses track of that faith until God orchestrates a reminder. Without going into spoilers - I'm thankful that I haven't had to go through the same reminder situations, though!

Daniel is your typical guide-type hero, but at the same time does an admirable job of not trying to bulling Noelle into thinking his way; he lets her make her own decisions, but at times to both of their detriment.

Overall an enjoyable read, even if a bit predictable.

If you are in the mood for a wonderful listen, sure to clear your head and make you feel good, this one is for you! This inspirational series is beautifully written and is full of adventure and love. This installment lets us meet Noelle who is going to her brother Simeon's house. She is being guided through the Canadian Rockies by Daniel. These two have some slow burning chemistry, but given the times and the circumstances, they do not act on it, at least at first! The Rockies hold some danger as they go through, the weather being less than cooperative and unexpected situations that do occur. There are a couple of things I really love about this story. Tit's very graphic in the visuals of the Rockies. I love when you can picture a scene in your head, and Misty M Beller does this perfectly. She also creates very strong female characters. During this time period, I think a lot of women were strong, but to hear a character like Noelle, who weathers the storms, defeats sickness and helps Daniel in his time of need shows the real inner strength of her character. Daniel shows great emotional change during his trip, giving the story real depth too. It's a great journey.

Leonor A Woodworth has a beautiful voice, and I find her narrations melodic and soothing. She always picks great books to narrate, and her voices for the characters are always perfect. She is wonderful to listen to.

Another book in the Mountain Men series. Misty Beller will capture your attention in the first pages and will keep you turning the page. Her books take place in the early 1800's in the mountains of Canada. She brings in the hardships they suffered, the freezing cold (you will almost shiver with the characters), even the scent of unwashed bodies. All your senses will be touched. The heroes and heroines are strong, independent and stubborn. They won't give up. Noelle is traveling with another couple to her brother's. City girl going into the wilderness. Daniel is the guide. Remember, wild animals, Indians (good or bad-read to see), frozen water, blizzards, scarcity of food and of course, romance. A good clean Christian historical book that will keep you reading.

I received this book as an ARC from the author and all opinions are my own. I've read all the books in this series and thoroughly enjoyed each of them. You also get to meet a few of the characters from earlier books. Each can be read as a stand alone. Misty M. Beller is a terrific author, does her research and makes the characters come alive. Highly recommend her and her books.

Noelle Grant was traveling west and then north into Canada to be with her brother, Simeon and his family. She had been traveling with a family and a guide, Daniel Abrams. After a long, ardous journey, the other family decided to stay put when they arrived at a fort before entering Canada, but Noelle was determined to go on to meet up with her brother in Canada. That is if Daniel Abrams would continue to be her guide.

They met with one difficulty after another, at times, neither seemed like they would survive, but with God on their side and a lot of hard work and determination, would they finally reach their final destination or would they give up on something that could be wonderful?

I was given a complimentary arc of this book. I have read several of Misty Beller’s books and they all describe some of the severe and difficulties that would face a pioneer in the 1800s. They are inspiring to read and hard to put down. I willingly offer my review of this book and encourage anyone who enjoys historical romances with a clean but romantic storyline to read this book and enjoy it as I did.

This Courageous Journey

When Daniel Abrams, a seasoned mountain man and trader agrees to guide Noelle and a small group to her brother’s farm in the Canadian Mountains he never imagines the adventures and hardships that await them. Daniel views Noelle as a city girl who doesn’t have what it takes to make it in wilds of Canada. She quickly proves that she is made of tougher stuff than he thought, but will it be enough? Can Noelle break down the walls that Daniel has so tightly built around his heart and will she realize that she is special just the way God made her or will she continue to seek the approval and recognition of the world?

The Author, Misty Beller has done a phenomenal job of writing a novel that vividly captures your imagination and makes you feel like you are traveling with Noelle and Daniel in the wilderness. Although this is the fourth book in Heart of the Mountains Series, it can be read as a stand alone novel. I loved this book so much that I can’t wait to read more of Misty’s works!

I received a copy of this novel from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
