Pete Adler is a man with problems. He’s a shy social outcast with no real friends. His luck with women has been spotty at best. A hostile work environment has made his life a living hell for months on end. For Pete, the weekend comes as a welcome respite from these things, but early Saturday morning he finds a beautiful and scantily clad dead woman on his couch. He has no idea who she is or how she got there. Is this a frame-up? Did he kill her in a blackout? Answers to these questions are elusive at first, but then the last woman he ever dated shows up on his doorstep out of the blue and things get seriously complicated from there. Blood is spilled. More bodies pile up. Pete is pushed to his limits as he is forced to do many strange and horrible things. A deadly game is being played and Pete is the ultimate pawn, with his fate coming down to a race against time.

What would you do if you woke up to find a dead stripper in your living room? After my initial shocked wail of "WTF," I would probably bark out an hysterical bout of laughter and then grill my husband six ways to Sunday. Pete Adler, the protagonist in this story, is single, meek and does not have my potty mouth. He makes an error that I surely would not have made (even if my husband was guilty). Consequently, our meek mannered antihero falls prey to not one, but two aggressive psychopaths who employ blackmail, violence and extreme harassment to force Pete into playing their game. Pushed to the very edge, Pete must make some life-altering choices. I read this book in two sittings, eager to know what would happen next. The closing scenes will not fade from my memory any time soon.
"That's the kind of broad you’re dealing with. A cold calculating evil genius c**t straight from the deepest, darkest depths of hell."
Imagine waking up from the best sleep you have ever had, you stretch, yawn, and walk into the living room. Before you can get fully awake, you spot something in your living room that wasn't there when you went to bed. There's a dead stripper on your couch, half-dressed, and cold as ice. What would you do and how would you react? I'm not sure what I would do but I sure as hell wouldn't have done what our friendly neighborhood protagonist did.
This was my second experience that I have had with Bryan Smith and this one went better than the first. My first experience wasn't bad but it was a tad bit too much for my first go-around. I enjoyed what I read and decided to try something else by him and it was great. I cringed, I laughed, and I got doused in blood. I call that a good time.
Dead Stripper Storage was demented and a lot of twisted fun. You couldn't help but love Pete and he definitely surprises you in this. I’m not sure how I would react to finding a dead stripper in my house but it was a lot of fun finding out what someone would do in those circumstances. This was sick and twisted and I can't wait to read more by this author.
Poor Pete Adler. His colleague, Shane Watson, is a bully who makes his life at work a living hell. When Shane is terminated from his position, Pete thinks that things are finally taking a turn for the better. And then he wakes up the next morning and finds a dead woman on his couch.
"...all she was to him was a pile of highly inconvenient dead meat."
It's not long before Pete discovers that someone is toying with him. He's too afraid to contact the police because he knows the evidence seems incriminating. He doesn't want to spend the rest of his life in prison. Yet, spending his life as a pawn in someone's sick game isn't any more appealing. How will Pete cope with his dreadful predicament? No spoilers, here...you'll just need to buy the book and find out!
This was a great story--a quick, straightforward, engrossing read. It started off more like a mystery at first then picked up pace and developed into a suspenseful thriller that kept me guessing. I was definitely fully immersed in the story as I yelled at Pete for some of the choices he made and analyzed how I would react under similar circumstances.
Very entertaining! I wonder if there will be a sequel....
There is no secret that I try to read anything I can by Bryan Smith as I feel he is brilliant and one of the authors whose style mimics the late-great Richard Laymon, especially in terms of insane scenarios. However, this one was somewhat of a dud for me.
Oh, Pete... that’s exactly what I was thinking the entire novel. The problem with Pete is that he is a whining idiot and impossible to sympathize with his plight. He never evens seems to rise above his situation either. This is literally the only novel from Bryan in which I had to prompt myself to keep reading. I’m glad I did because I liked the ending but I truly think Bryan has written much better stories than this.
Bryan Smith’s new horror novel is a deliciously entertaining thriller, filled with hilarious dark humor. The initial hook of finding a body one morning on a couch with no idea how it got there is pretty great. Deeply twisted characters and fun dialogue had me turning the pages at a lightning pace. However, once the twist is revealed, the story seemed to falter a bit. The motivation of the antagonist felt artificial and although I still continued reading, the second half was definitely not as good as the first half. I think author Smith could have worked a better and more subtle – and complex – reason for what was happening. The ending was enjoyable enough that I felt satisfied, and would even be interested in reading a sequel. This was a good, not great, entry from one of horror’s more underrated authors.
I am literally out of breath after reading all of Bryan's stuff and this one is no different! What would you do if you woke up, couldn't remember the previous night very well, and there was a dead stripper on your couch? Read this and find out how psychos in the workplace could affect you! 😁👍
This is a fun little read but offers nothing new to the genre and I know I will forget what little plot there is in a few days. Engaging but not unique or memorable.
A fresh story that rachets anxiety levels chapter by chapter. The epilogue isn't needed and takes away from the story that precedes it, feeling tacked on and overly expository.
What would you do if you woke up to find a dead stripper on your couch? If you're anything like Pete, you'd absolutely panic—and just when you think things can't get worse, they spiral completely out of control. From blackmail and manipulation to violence, death, and desperate choices, Pete is dragged through one chaotic turn after another.
This was a wild, fast-paced read that I devoured in one sitting. Smith’s writing is sharp, dark, and twisted in all the best ways. He’s definitely become one of my favorites!
