El protagonista de La nube de smog lucha sin ilusión contra una de las grandes amenazas de las sociedades la contaminación atmosférica. Decidido a conservar la lucidez, su actitud no le impide indagar en la opaca realidad que le rodea. «La nube de smog es un relato continuamente tentado por convertirse en algo ensayo sociológico o diario íntimo; pero ante esas tentaciones [el autor] consigue oponer siempre su táctica defensiva, a base de gags cómicos y de encogerse de hombros, lo que le permite permanecer suspendido en ese clima que le es tan propio, entre transfiguración simbólica, actualidad extraída de lo real, desahogos de humor y poema en prosa. Imagen e ideograma del mundo al que tenemos que hacer frente es el smog, la niebla humosa y cargada de detritos químicos de las ciudades industriales. Cada uno de sus personajes tiene su propia manera de contraponerse a ella. Smog is a hoot. A stand-up comic could use Smog for the basis of an hour long stand-up routine. Do we have a future Chris Rock or Eddie Izzard or Lewis Black in the audience?
Smog features a young, single newspaper writer come to a small Italian city to take on the job of managing editor for Purification, a magazine put out by the Institute, an organization dedicated to improving air quality.
When our first-person narrator, a man I'll call Matteo, arrives as the offices of the Institute, he's taken aback as he's lead through spacious halls and galleries decked out with giant mirrors, lavish wall hangings, thick carpets and marble fireplaces. Ha! I bet Matteo was a bit shocked as he pondered the discord between such a private display of opulence and the austere public mission of the Institute.
Matteo is introduced to Commenndatore Cordá, the Institute's head and editor-in-chief. Italo Calvino proves himself a master at portraying a man who can be seen as the very embodiment of velvety ease, success and expansiveness and yet also a blustering buffoon and diabolical clown.
Keeping in mind Smog as the novella's title, there's more than a small dose of irony when Matteo watches this executive slicker in action. "And as he spoke, he picked up those papers and at the moment I noticed how they raised a little cloud of dust, and I saw the prints of his fingers outlined on their surface, which he had barely touched. Now the Commendatore, in picking up those papers, tried to give them a little shake, but just a slight one, as if he didn't want to admit they were dusty, and he also blew on them gently. He was careful not to put his fingers on the first page of each speech, but if he just grazed one with the tip of a fingernail, he left a little white streak over what seemed a gray background, since the paper was covered with a very fine veil of dust."
Back in the squalor of his dust-covered rented room in one of the city's more rundown districts, Matteo attempts to go to sleep. Again, Italo Calvino's storytelling magic shines through. As Matteo lets us know, his room is directly over the kitchen of Urbano Rattazzi beer hall where he can hear loudspeakers transmitting orders: "Two ravioli with tomato sauce" or "Side dish of French fries." Poor, poor young man. It's after midnight but the beer hall will continue serving hot meals for the next few hours.
And when Urbano Rattazzi closes for business, time for the kitchen workers to drag out the metal beer drums, clank, clank, bang, bang, and start rinsing them out, squirt, squirt, bang,. Then, at about six a.m., after the beer truck comes to pick up the empties and drop off the fulls, kaboom! kaboom!, the sound of the machines for polishing the beer hall floors can be heard. If all this isn't enough, in moments of silence Matteo can hear his deaf landlady Signorina Margariti in the next room carrying on intense soliloquies without surcease, all in a loud, shrill voice punctuated by long bouts of laughter.
Oh, Matteo, to top it off, your life is about to receive a serious injection of drama - it's three a.m. and you are jolted out of sleep by the telephone in the hall that's ringing off the hook. You jump up to see who is on the line but you already know even before you hear her voice: it's your girlfriend Claudia.
Ever since your first scrumptious Claudia kiss, you have always wondered why such a beautiful and vivacious young woman (and rich too!) would fall in love with an average looking journalist such as yourself, a guy with a flat personality, lacking ambition and scraping along from day to day. Then you remember: she mistakenly thought you part of the world of high society, famous artists and talented writers. She sensed she made a terrible error but since it wasn't in Claudia's nature to admit she committed a blunder, she went on projecting talents and greatness onto you.
Then when gorgeous Claudia pays a visit to this soot-covered gray city to meet up with her heartthrob writer boyfriend, Italo Calvino is given oodles of opportunities to portray the collision of beauty with its grimy opposite. I encourage you to read for yourself but permit me to close with Matteo and Claudia wearing her huge black hat, the couple up on a mountain and Matteo in an ecstatic mood: "A sense of vastness had seized me; I don't know whether it was Claudia's hat and skirt, or the view. The air, though this was autumn, was fairly clear and unpolluted, but it was streaked by the most diverse kinds of condensation: thick mists at the base of the mountains, wisps of fog over the rivers, chains of clouds, stirred variously by the wind."
Smog is included in The Watcher and Other Stories. Again, I urge you to seek out this humorous sixty-page novella and luxuriate in Italo Calivno's splendid storytelling.

Why write?
• It may be a job, as for the narrator, who’s a writer for a magazine, or for me, as a technical writer.
• On GR, it’s purely for the love of it.
• For a novelist, it’s probably both profit and pleasure.
• In a journal or diary, it’s a private habit or compulsion, with no thought of other readers.
Does a writer need to believe in the message?
• A journalist may write more powerfully and easily if they believe what they write, but it’s more important to write what and how the editor and readers demand. They can fake it, as long as it’s not utterly opposed to their own beliefs, and even then, they might write as devil’s advocate.
• What I write for work needs to be clear and accurate, and although I enjoy my job, I don’t need to love the product.
• But on GoodReads, unless writing satire or a spoof, as a few do brilliantly, I think it’s essential to write from the heart. It is a personal forum, even when writing to strangers - except many of the strangers become friends via the comments and discussions that ensue.
Does it matter if anyone else reads it?
• With a journal or diary, it’s often vital that no one else ever reads it.
• For a journalist or novelist, sales pay the bills: buyers count as readers, even if they don’t. But there’s professional pride: an engaging comment on a news article, or a favourable review on GR are welcomed.
• I rarely know if anyone reads my user guides. They’re necessary, but probably only read a last resort. I can’t complain; as a user, I follow the same approach.
• That’s why I love reviewing here: the confirmation that people do read what I write, and that some of them find it interesting. Discussions with fellow readers inspire what to read and how to improve my own reviews.
These are not the most obvious themes from this story, but that’s why they interested me, as well as the fact I can relate to them more than living in a polluted city. The narrator confronts all three questions.
The Story
This gentle coming-of-age satire becomes increasingly cynical over its 50 pages - and none the worse for that.
A young man recounts moving to a new city to be managing editor of a government department’s periodical, “Purification”. The initial irony, outlined in painful (the narrator’s) detail, is that the city has a major pollution problem. Dusty papers are picked up “delicately by the margins as if they were nettle leaves”.
“Once my hands were washed and dried I immediately felt better, as if I had regained the use of them.”
The young man is borderline OCD, so his expectation of having to “fake a passion for the subject” seems misplaced, but he’s diligent in work, despite his anxiety about dirt. He eats in cafés at odd times, to avoid people, and is distressed by the mere sight of a stray crumb.
“One of those characters who talks as if their words were typewritten.”
He describes office life: how he chooses subjects, the circles of refining his text (each change, leading to others), and tailoring his writing to what he learns his boss wants. Fortunately, or necessarily, he claims he “had no ideals, nor did I want any”.
The second, deeper irony he unveils is that his boss is a factory magnate:
“The clever captain of industry coexisted in him with the visionary and each needed the other.”
“It wasn’t clear whether his real battle was fought for or against the cloud.”
(Un)Reliable Narrator?
“Claudia’s voice, tawny and speckled.”
“I had the sensation of sparks, dazzle” as she talked.
One might expect a detail-obsessed journalist to be the epitome of accuracy, but I’m not sure he is, at least regarding his wealthy, famous, glamorous girlfriend. I never understood what she saw in him, and wondered how necessary, let alone true, her visits were. Perhaps, in this early work, Calvino is beginning to play with different versions of reality.

کتاب عجیبی بود. خیلی خوب شروع شد. فکر کردم قراره درباره آدمی باشه که وسواس داره و خب زیاد باهاش تونستم همذاتپنداری کنم. ولی بعد هرچی میگذشت از این قضیه دور میشد و به صورت پارهپاره از چیزهای دیگهای حرف میزد ولی خیلی گنگ، طوری که ازاخر نمیفهمیدم کتاب درباره چی بود! به اندازه کتابهای دیگهش دوست نداشتم.
در کنار همه اینها، ترجمه خیلی بدی هم داشت که شاید این نافهمی بخش زیادیش بهخاطر اون بود.

This review is for 'Smog', the English translation of Calvino's novella.
What an odd tale this is (but then, it is Calvino). The closest relation to it I've encountered among the maestro's works (and I've read most of them) is 'The Argentine Ant'. The protagonist moves to a new town where he encounters a menace with which the inhabitants have learnt to co-exist - fog/dust ('Smog'), hordes of ants ('The Argentine Ant'). Beyond that, I've read nothing else like it.
The protagonist leads a relatively easy life. He edits a magazine, Purification, sponsored by a rich industrialist, dedicated to solving the problem of smog but which nobody reads. And yet he is angst-ridden - about his posh girlfriend from another city discovering the circumstances in which he lives, about having to talk to the other regulars at the cheap restaurant where he takes his meals, about the constant noise from the cafe-bar below his rented room, about the dust.
The people around the protagonist find ways of ignoring the degraded condition of their world. His girlfriend, Claudia, pretends to see neither the dust in the city nor the semi-squalor in which he lives. His colleague, Avandero, runs from the city every weekend to go skiing, seeking the purity of the pure white mountain snow. His boss, Commendatore Corda, asserts that the pollution problem will be solved, without appearing to do anything about it. His dining acquaintance, Omar Basaluzzi, escapes into the fantasy of Marxist revolution.
The ending is bizarre and beautiful, finishing up in the countryside among acres of clean white bed linen. As for the meaning, I guess there's a morality tale in there about the perils of accommodation and inaction. I suspect it also reflects Calvino's unease about the state of our modern cities.

El smog, que proviene de la unión de las palabras en inglés «smoke» (humo) y «fog» (niebla), se trata de una forma de contaminación atmosférica debido, principalmente, a las emisiones de los coches, de fábricas e incluso a la combustión de carbón.
Este es el primer libro que leo de Italo Calvino en este año del centenario de su nacimiento. Cronológicamente también es uno de los primeros (1963). Es la historia de un periodista anodino, algo de lo que él se encarga de recordar, que llega a una ciudad donde la contaminación del smog está tomándolo todo sin que a nadie le importe mucho. Me ha dado por pensar cuando empezó a usarse el término smog. En inglés se popularizó en los años 40, pero en español no lo tengo claro. El caso es que me sorprende que en italiano se usara en los 60, aunque fuese solo en ciertos ámbitos como el periodístico.
Es una novela corta interesante por el punto de vista de un protagonista aburrido, disciplinado y celoso de su intimidad, pero sin ningún interés, salvo el que despierta cuando va acompañado de Claudia, la modelo por la que todos giran la cabeza.

دنیای آلوده ی ما
کتاب در مورد آلودگی محیط زیست و رایط آب و هوایی جهانی است حالا شما تصور کنید با این موضوع چه رمانی میشود نوشت؟.بالطبع موضوع خوبی برای نوشتن نیست ولی میتونه تلنگری برای ما باشه تا دنیای پیرامون رو متفاوت نگاه کنید
قسمتی که خیلی منو جذب کرد این بود
دیگر از آب و هوا سخن نمیگفت در حالی که زمانی جمله ای عادی برای شروع مکالمه بود
برای یکبار خواندن خوب بود واصلا خسته کننده نبود

Justo ahora, en Barcelona, mi nueva ciudad, estoy estudiando el concepto de lo urbano. Formas de comprender lo caótico, lo fugaz, lo incoherente de la vida moderna, llena de contradicciones y, aparentemente indescifrable. Leyendo a Calvino solo puedo disfrutar, fascinarme ante su inteligencia y la manera en la que este escritor comprendió la ciudad, los ritmos acelerados, la manera en la que este italiano abrazo la conceptualización total de lo que es lo urbano.

کالوینو نابغهست. ساده ترین جملات و کلمههاش شبیه عمیقترین رازهای دنیان.
و سعی برای کشف این رازها واقعا لذت بخشه. هرچند که شانس موفقیت هم خیلی زیاد نیست. :دی
بنابراین، با اینکه نفهمیدم کلِ قصه میخواست چی بگه(اگر فرض کنیم میخواست)،
همچنان دریافتهام از جملات پراکنده کتاب اونقدر ارزشمندن که نتونم دوست نداشته باشم این کتاب رو!
ضمن اینکه ایده کلی جالبه! شاید به قاعده همیشه «درخشان» نباشه ولی جالبه.

Es primera novela que leo de Calvino y creo que hay algo, pero no se identificar bien qué.
Es una novela simple de leer, sobre un tema que en la actualidad ya se considera como parte de la vida misma. El smog o la contaminación que respiramos diariamente, ya forma parte de nosotros, ya está en nuestro ADN, ya xd.
La narración comienza por un personaje, del cual desconocemos su nombre, recién llegado a una ciudad. El personaje es bastante plano, sin grandes intereses en nada, ni nadie. Se nota aplicado a su trabajo, eso denota disciplina y además de ser alguien muy respetuoso con su vida privada. Comienza a trabajar en una revista como editor de la misma. Luego nos damos cuenta que la revista misma es algo sin mayor importancia que es llevada a cabo por los mismos que contaminan la ciudad. Es algo curioso, porque en la actualidad esto nos parece algo normal, pero recordemos que la novela es publicada el año 60, es decir hace caleta de tiempo xd. Quizás, eso mismo es lo que resalta de la misma, la capacidad de reflexionar sobre algo que en su tiempo no debe haber sido tema importante.
Calvino tiene una forma de narrar que es sencilla de leer, muy clara y por sobre todo, hace varios guiños humorísticos, cosa que siempre se agradece. Disfruté la novela, como se pueden disfrutar muchas otras, lectura de una tarde, lectura sin más.
Es una novela simple de leer, sobre un tema que en la actualidad ya se considera como parte de la vida misma. El smog o la contaminación que respiramos diariamente, ya forma parte de nosotros, ya está en nuestro ADN, ya xd.
La narración comienza por un personaje, del cual desconocemos su nombre, recién llegado a una ciudad. El personaje es bastante plano, sin grandes intereses en nada, ni nadie. Se nota aplicado a su trabajo, eso denota disciplina y además de ser alguien muy respetuoso con su vida privada. Comienza a trabajar en una revista como editor de la misma. Luego nos damos cuenta que la revista misma es algo sin mayor importancia que es llevada a cabo por los mismos que contaminan la ciudad. Es algo curioso, porque en la actualidad esto nos parece algo normal, pero recordemos que la novela es publicada el año 60, es decir hace caleta de tiempo xd. Quizás, eso mismo es lo que resalta de la misma, la capacidad de reflexionar sobre algo que en su tiempo no debe haber sido tema importante.
Calvino tiene una forma de narrar que es sencilla de leer, muy clara y por sobre todo, hace varios guiños humorísticos, cosa que siempre se agradece. Disfruté la novela, como se pueden disfrutar muchas otras, lectura de una tarde, lectura sin más.

La Nube de Smog se encuadra en el apartado realista de la obra de Calvino, aunque aquí la ciudad moderna -tema ya presente en otros libros del autor- se dibuja como un entorno torcido, lleno misterio, poco habitable, a medio camino entre el sueño y la pesadilla, donde vidas alienadas, miserables y en la penumbra no parecen menos extrañas que las que discurren en las fiestas nocturnas iluminadas con luz artificial o entre preparativos de la escapada de fin de semana. La narración va de hecho pasando por múltiples episodios sin conducir a ningún lugar claro. La nube de smog es una presencia pesada pero poco precisa, que conecta finalmente con la inquietud ante la amenaza nuclear.
Aunque la portada no lo indica, esta edición incluye también el relato La hormiga argentina. En él también se combina lo real con lo fantástico y volvemos a encontrarnos con vidas atrapadas, por la pobreza, la inseguridad, la burocracia, el progreso (desigual) o la falta de solidaridad social.
Dos textos breves de Calvino que parecen escritos sin excesivas ambiciones, pero que dan miles de vueltas al grueso de las cosas que puedan encontrarse en una biblioteca cualquiera.

Algo que me gusta de Calvino es su forma de construir metáforas que hablan de muchas cosas: al leerlo, al reflexionar sobre lo que se está leyendo, los significados se echan carreras. Quizá por su lucidez, en "la nube de smog" he encontrado no solo un retrato bastante poco amable de las sociedades industriales, sino también una profecía sobre la forma de "limpiar" toda la suciedad generada en ellas. Está eso que ahora llamamos "ecowashing" y que no deja de ser un lavado de imagen para engañarnos y hacernos creer en una supuesta conciencia ambiental. Y también está eso tan moderno de sacar la porquería y que se ocupen otros más pobres, que sean ellos quienes limpien el desastre. Una obra cortita en la que hay mucho, como esos trucos de mago en que empiezan a tirar de la punta del pañuelo y salen cientos de ellos, eso me ha parecido esta novelita. Muy recomendable.

Sobre “La nube de smog”. Luego de un inicio sobrio, en tonos grises y sórdidos de aire existencialista, la historia va perdiendo fuerza y forma. Creo que buscaba acercarse a la propaganda, pero ni siquiera eso se definía del todo.
Me gusta mucho Calvino, pero este debe ser el más flojo de todos los libros suyos que leí.
Sobre “La hormiga argentina”. Imposible no compartir la frustración y la impotencia de los personajes ante la presencia de esas hormigas que lo invaden todo y contra las que ninguna estrategia parece funcionar. La tensión se sostiene hasta el final de este relato que, además, no deja de ser entretenido.

Esta novela corta aborda de una manera interesante el tema de la contaminación del aire. En general, me parece que está bien escrita pero su estructura es un tanto fragmentada aunque se mantiene el hilo conductor de la historia. Los personajes están bien construidos aunque no son del tipo que sea fácil sentir empatizar con ellos, en especial el personaje principal.
En cuanto a la trama, esta se basa en la perspectiva del personaje principal sobre la contaminación, creo que toda la historia se mantiene un poco "gris" en tanto a la personalidad del protagonista y a la falta de emociones.

فکر می کردم مثل بقیه ی کتابایی که از ایتالو کالوینو خوندم جذاب باشه و داستانی متفاوت. ولی این جوری نبود. خیلی عادی پیش رفت و تموم شد.

Hasta hace poco sólo conocía la faceta humorística de Italo Calvino. Este año he leído "Seis propuestas para el próximo milenio" que me sorprendió pero favorablemente, por la calidad de sus razonamientos y por la cultura que destilan. Ahora "La nube de smog" me ha sorprendido también pero por todo lo contrario. Encontramos en este relato corto problemas muy actuales; por ejemplo, la búsqueda de empleo. Nuestro protagonista va a buscar trabajo a un remoto pueblo y, la verdad es que no puede quejarse, porque ha conseguido el puesto de redactor en la revista "Purificación".
No debe uno extrañarse del nombre de la revista pues su objetivo es combatir la contaminación, luchar por el medio ambiente y concienciar a la gente de los problemas que la contaminación acarrea. Y es razonable y hasta necesario ya que el pueblo en cuestión se ve envuelto e una niebla espesa y pegajosa que va dejando su huella en forma de una película negruzca y con cierto grado de grasa sobre todo lo que toque. Aparte de ese extraño elemento, la vida transcurre tranquila para nuestro redactor que sólo ameniza su rutina con las llamadas y las visitas esporádicas de Claudia, su novia. Podríamos pensar que la dirección de "Purificación" está en manos de algún ecologista. Pues nos equivocaríamos, la dirige el ingeniero Cordá, responsable de las emanciones tóxicas de su fábrica, que es lo que causa la nube de smog.
El tema no puede ser de más actuaidad, la contaminación, la especulación, la corrupción política, las estafas. Parece como si el año de su publicación no fuera 1958, sino 2012. Todo se repite, los mismos errores; por años que pasen, siempre habrá alguien que se enriquezca a costa de otros; siempre habrá políticos corruptos que nos dirijan discursos vacíos porque no tienen la determinación de acabar con los abusos. Y no hablemos de la improductiva verborrea de los sindicatos que nadan entre dos aguas.
Al final, no se ven soluciones, todo queda en agua de borrajas, inclusi su relación sentimental donde no se ve ni romanticismo.
Me parece una obra muy floja para salir de la mano de Italo Calvino. LOs personajes están poco perfilados -quizá quiera diluirlos en la nube- y los temas a los que me he referido no están tratados en profundidad. Deja un sabor a inconsistencia.

Siempre una delicia Calvino. Esta es una obra más bien menor sin grandes ambiciones (aunque es ambicioso realmente alguno de sus libros?), pero con toda su elegancia, su capacidad observadora que lo emparenta con Perec, su humor tan fino. Creo que Calvino es mi verdadero crush de los últimos años :)

En la contraportada dice “divertida” y esperaba encontrarme con una comedia, una parodia de la vida urbana. A medida que leía, me adentraba en una ciudad sofocante de hollín, en la decadencia del mundo urbano que se eleva a costa de aplastar la naturaleza. No ha sido una lectura humorística aunque sí fue una lectura que disfruté mucho. A mi parecer, la novela narra el drama de un hombre con un empleo mediocre donde lo que hace es una fachada; trabaja en una empresa estatal, otra fachada. Su vida transita mientras él resiste al arraigo porque todo es considerado provisorio. Si todo es provisorio, su estado es efímero, apenas un tránsito que nadie recordará.

En una nueva ciudad, el narrador trabaja en una revista y arrienda una habitación barata, sin baño interno, sin agua caliente, la casera es sorda, hay mucho polvo, la mujer habla sola, la habitación está sobre una cervecería restaurant que trabaja hasta tarde, tipo 2-3 am, y tanto ese lugar, como la ciudad y la oficina, todo se llena de polvo. Es esa nube de smog del título.
La novela en sí se lee rápido, pero no la disfruté tanto como el texto introductorio en donde Calvino responde a un crítico que habló sobre el estilo del relato. Lo hace con agudeza, humor y argumentos, hablando no sólo de las limitaciones de las traducciones sino de lo cuestionable que resulta el estilo de ciertos escritores que abusan de los adjetivos.
La novela en sí se lee rápido, pero no la disfruté tanto como el texto introductorio en donde Calvino responde a un crítico que habló sobre el estilo del relato. Lo hace con agudeza, humor y argumentos, hablando no sólo de las limitaciones de las traducciones sino de lo cuestionable que resulta el estilo de ciertos escritores que abusan de los adjetivos.
