The Final Scream

Rate this book
The importance of the 1970s for the horror genre cannot be disputed. Cultural and social change was all too prevalent, resulting in a sudden shift in expectations for the loyal horror fan. Some could argue that this decade gave birth to the slasher film, while a new style of unforgiving exploitation cinema was also emerging. This third book within the First Scream to the Last series will catalogue a wide selection of genre pieces from arguably its most influential era, allowing the reader to capture this polarizing decade throughout each year. Once again supported by insightful contributions and interviews from various artists, The Final Scream serves as a valuable resource for a very special moment in horror history.

I enjoyed this. It brought back memories, and will act as an invaluable guide in future when looking through TV listings. A few details did bother me, so I'll get those out the way first.

There were occasional spelling mistakes, including a particular bugbear of mine which is the confusion of 'grizzly' (either a particular type of bear or an adjective meaning grey or grey-haired) and 'grisly' (causing disgust or horror). Given the subject of this book, this cropped up a lot! I also thought the book would have benefited greatly from an index. Finally, although I liked the approach of splitting the decade up into years, I found it difficult sometimes to remember which year I was reading about: a running header showing the year in question would have been greatly appreciated.

Such minor niggles aside, I know this is a reference work I will be returning to time and time again. I also know I now want to pick up volumes 1 and 2 covering horror films of the 80s and 90s.

Informative, and definitely recommended for fans of horror cinema!

A list of horror movies from the 70s with a brief synopsis and occasional interviews that add some insight-sometimes.

I like using the lists from these books to find new horror movies to watch, and with the exceptions of Halloween, Jaws, the Exorcist, Alien and a few others, I didn’t know many of the movies the 70s offered.

I was left wondering after reading all three books in the series: how come Alien made the list, but Predator was left off the list. Jaws and Orca made the list, but Tremors was left off. So many questions, and not an answer in sight.
