Second Childhood

Rate this book
John Montague's collection of new poems circles back to familiar subjects, his childhood in Ulster and his recognition that a family fracture was reflected in divisions within his surrounding society. It includes explorations of childhood and adolescence with its awakening sexuality. The books second section continues John Montague's recollections by reconstructing pilgrimages to and conversations with the poet and artist David Jones (1895-1974). Second childhood, published on what would have been his 88th birthday, is a windfall from one of Ireland's revered and best loved poets.

I went to the launch of this collection of poems from John Montague. It was organised by The Gallery Press in association with Poetry Ireland at their HQ at 11 Parnell Square East, Dublin 1 on 21st Feb. The room was packed and I was moved by the readings of these poems by family and friends of John Montague. These poems cover the childhood innocence and adolescence adventures, as remembered by the poet in the twilight of his life. This collection covers a wide range of subjects, like "Afterlife of Dogs" touches upon death as perhaps perceived by dogs and is absolutely touching, another one "Ferrets" is surely the only poem written on ferrets ever. There is another "Bird Boy" which covers anticipation of birds for the boy returning from school. There is one "Alight" that depicts the pangs of adolescence in absolute honesty.
His friend John Boorman read "Kingdoms" which covered the childhood incident where poet "standing buck naked" together jumped into the river.
These poems gives us an insight into the mind of one of the finest poet produced by Ireland and is an absolute treasure. I feel lucky to have read this collection of poems in presence of the family and friends of John Montague.
