Angels: Who They Are and How They Help--What the Bible Reveals

Rate this book
The remarkable truth about angels, the agents of Heaven, unveiled through Scripture.

For centuries, people have been fascinated by stories of angel sightings, yet many contemporary beliefs about them are based on misconception and myth rather than solid, biblical truth.

Responding to our modern cultural interest in angels, popular Bible teacher Dr. David Jeremiah provides an in-depth, biblical look at these agents of Heaven and their role in our world and our lives. What are angels? What is their role in God's plan? Are they present? Do they appear? Do they give us personal insight about our work and our worship?

In this broad and thorough survey of Scripture, Dr. Jeremiah clearly and simply separates fact from fiction as it relates to angels. His enlightening findings are supported with illustrations and insights from prominent teachers, such as Billy Graham, Corrie ten Boom, C. S. Lewis, and more.

Dr. David Jeremiah, founder of Turning Point Radio and Television Ministries and senior pastor of Shadow Mountain Community Church, felt God’s calling on his life at a very early age. Born February 13, 1941 in Toledo, Ohio, Dr. Jeremiah was raised in a family deeply committed to ministry. At the age of eleven, Dr. Jeremiah and his family moved to Dayton, Ohio where his father, Dr. James T. Jeremiah, was the Pastor of Emmanuel Baptist Church, and in 1953 became the President of Cedarville College in Cedarville, Ohio.

As Dr. Jeremiah was sensitive to God’s leading in his life, he followed in his father’s footsteps. In 1963, Dr. Jeremiah received a Bachelor of Arts from Cedarville College. In that same year, Dr. Jeremiah married his college sweetheart, Donna Thompson who also was attending Cedarville College as a business major. He went on to earn a Masters degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary in 1967. He completed additional graduate work at Grace University and was granted the Doctor of Divinity degree from Cedarville College in 1981.

In 1969, Dr. Jeremiah began Blackhawk Baptist Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and developed a Christian school grades K through 12. In the 12 years he served as pastor, Blackhawk Baptist Church grew from 7 families to 1300 members. He also launched The Bible Hour television program.

Dr. Jeremiah heeded God’s call, and in 1981 he and his family moved to California where he became the senior pastor of Scott Memorial Baptist Church, now Shadow Mountain Community Church.

Shadow Mountain Community Church is one of the largest churches in San Diego County. It is also the home of Southern California Seminary and Christian Unified Schools.

As Dr. Jeremiah began his ministry at Shadow Mountain, he felt God’s calling to continue the broadcast ministry he started in Fort Wayne. In 1982, Turning Point Ministries became a reality.

Today, Turning Point's 30-minute radio program is heard nationally and internationally on over 1800 stations and translator/satellators. In recognition of Dr. Jeremiah’s commitment to teaching the Word of God, he received the Broadcaster of the Year Award in 1999 from the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB), in August 2002, received the Award of Merit from the Western Chapter of National Religious Broadcasters for Excellence in Broadcasting and Faithfulness in Service, and in 2006 Turning Point received the Best Radio Teaching Program Award. Dr. Jeremiah has served on the Board of Directors for the NRB since 1996.

Turning Point launched a television program in 1982 in San Diego and went nationwide in 2000. Now seen around the world through cable and satellite technology, as well as on terrestrial stations all across the United States, conservative estimates suggest that close to 200 million homes around the world have access to Dr. Jeremiah's Bible teaching each week. Turning Point Television offers a half-hour Bible study message and a full hour worship service with the same great preaching. Carried on several national and international networks such as TBN, ION, and INSP, Turning Point Television has most recently been added to Middle East TV Network and BET, the Black Entertainment Network.

Dr. Jeremiah is a sought-after conference speaker for organizations around the country. He frequently speaks at Cedarville College, Dallas Theological Seminary, Moody Bible Institute, Billy Graham Training Center, Phil Waldrep’s Senior Adult Celebrations and numerous NFL, NBA and Baseball chapels.

Along with his speaking schedule around the country, Dr. Jeremiah also finds time to fulfill another passion in his life, writing. His books are always gripping and right to the point. Some of his books include Escape the Coming Night, The Power of Encouragement, What the Bible Says About Angels, Prayer The Great Adventure, which brought him The Gold Medallion Award in 1998, God In You, Gifts from God

Informative and Biblical

It is nice to read a book about angels that is Biblically based and is not based on speculation. David Jeremiah keeps your interest and also makes you desire to serve the Lord more effectively.

A wonderfully thoughtful discussion of angels and their true “biblical accuracy” that is not often portrayed in our understanding of the lexicon. This was enthralling and beautiful, and I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about angels, especially if you don’t know where to start. This book is comprehensive without becoming obtuse. It’s great for someone who is starting their understanding of angels. I would have loved for a chapter on angels in different religions or their role in literature and art, but I feel that was not the book’s purpose as it was clearly anchored by Christian depictions and biblical references. A really enjoyed this one.

A nicely laid-out book, structured in a logical order, but the good information on angels is buried under a lot of proselytizing. One must be patient and dig down to keep track of the information on angels per se, of what the Bible and popular belief say about angels. I was hoping for more anecdotes or personal experiences to illustrate his points. For example, he talks about how he didn't at first believe that angels carry the dead, but over time, he came to realise that it was so. At that point, he goes into a related anecdote, but not about him, of why he changed his mind on this. And one is left with questions. Very frustrating. Anyway, at least I learnt and confirmed the basics and Jeremiah liberally peppered the text with references, quotes, and other helpful inclusions. I would give this 2.5 stars, rounded up to 3 as Goodreads doesn't have half stars.

While this book is similar in a lot of ways to a book by Billy Graham, this one might be a little better for those wanting to know more about what the Bible says about angels only because it dived a bit farther (not deeper, just explored the topic differently). Either one would be an excellent choice, though.

This book was very helpful in understanding angels and their place in the heavens, on earth, and in our lives. This book takes a scriptural approach to all things angels, including demons (Satan's angels).

What was interesting in this book, other than the topic itself, were the little tidbits that made you stop reading and think about what he was saying. For instance, have you ever thought about the fact that the angel Gabriel looked the same to every person in the Bible who saw him? Angels do not age. So from Daniel to Mary, mother of Jesus, he looks the same. Interesting to think about, isn't it?

David Jeremiah is quick to point out that although angels are a part of our lives, we are not to pray to them or focus more on them than God. Angels are simply a part of God's plan. They were created to do all sorts of things in an effort to aid Christians.

Read this book, and many things you think you know about angels will be dis proven and your eyes will be opened to the truth about angels and how they fit into the lives of Christians.

PRAISE GOD!!!

This book is going to be the most special book of my life.
You see, my beloved grandmother has cancer.

(Unfortunately I found out in the middle of this book, it has spread after a long battle.)

In a talk we had over the phone yesterday; she brought up David Jeremiah. Ironically, I had been reading this very book. I told her, “I am reading a book on angels by Pastor Jeremiah!” She told me, “That’s great. Keep going!”

I did not know how her illness would spread before starting this book. It’s been a long battle. I believe God purposefully had me purchase THIS book, in particular. Cancer is brought up. One of the most beautiful thoughts of this book? “Death is different for the Christian.” We KNOW no matter when a loved one leaves; we will absolutely see them again.

I had been praying that whenever her time comes; whether it is sooner or later, that angels will come and get her. Pastor Jeremiah answered that question beautifully. They absolutely will come and get her, with smiles on their faces.

I pray those that don’t know Christ, accept Him. God loves you. He is sovereign and sent His own Son for us; Jesus.

Pastor Jeremiah even gives us some amazing insight as to who, “THE Angel of the Lord” is during The Old Testament.

Savor this beautiful book.

Through out the pages of this book Dr. David Jeremiah leads readers on an in depth conversation about what the Bible provides on the topic of angels. There is a what, when, why and often how about angels and included is a scriptural index that makes your own referencing much less complicated.

I have always had a personal belief in angels, but not put much thought to it. There are some people who have become fascinated with the angelic beings and it is interested how Dr. Jeremiah puts this into perspective. The book is a little hard to chew, meaning that you can really only absorb bits of it at a time. Yet after mulling through the details the educational value is high and it really drives you back to scripture.

I admit I enjoy their choice of font for the book as well.

This was a study for Ladies Bible class. I probably would not have finished it otherwise. While I did learn a few things and a few things made me ponder, I questioned a lot of his conclusions as they were either not backed by facts and/or Scripture or they were just the author’s admitted opinion or conjecture. I’m okay with not knowing that much about angels since we are not to worship them - as author points out from the very beginning.

This book explored what the Bible says about angels. It was written in an easy-to-follow, somewhat casual writing style. However, the font was small and light, making the book difficult to read.

When Dr. Jeremiah concentrated on what Scripture had to say about angels, the book was excellent...though he did identify a few beings in the Bible as angels that I'm not convinced are angels (like he assumed that "the elders" in Revelations were angels, which not everyone agrees with).

Apparently that wasn't enough material to fill up the book, so he included a lot of speculation about angels. I was rarely convinced by his ideas (especially in chapter 12 and parts of chapters 6, 7, and 13), though usually there wasn't anything I could point to in the Bible that directly disproved it. I appreciated that Dr. Jeremiah was careful to point out when he was speculating versus what came directly from the Bible.

When Dr. Jeremiah was paraphrasing a passage from the Bible about an angel encounter, he would often change the wording of what happened to something I didn't think was quite accurate. The shorter passages stayed pretty true to the Scripture, but I'd highly recommend that you look up the longer passages or ones you don't recognize to see what the Bible really said.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated by angels but who isn't familiar with what the Bible says on the subject or who wants to know everything the Bible has to say about angels.

“Another enjoyable, factual, relevant book from David Jeremiah.”

Drawing from some of the greatest ‘Heroes of Faith’, Dr. Jeremiah presents ‘Angels: Who They Are and How They Help–What the Bible Reveals’.

Many believers mistakenly focus on portions of the Christian walk leaving others for their passionate interests in such things as angels.

In this book, Pastor Jeremiah directs the focus to the origin, purpose, and persona of angels using biblical references and previous works of such heroes of the faith as John Calvin, M.J. Erickson, Lewis Sperry Chafer, C.F. Dickason and J.M. Wilson as well as C. S. Lewis, Corrie Ten Boom, and specifically Dr. Billy Graham.

You may find that angels are not exactly what you perceived them to be. In this book Dr. Jeremiah writes of the true characteristics of angels…

“Real angels have been and are and shall forever be awesome warriors for God, agents of his wrath and power. We don’t wonder in the least why people in the Bible who see angels are so often struck with terror at the sight.”

It is further clarified that angels are not to be worshiped, as some in our culture would have us to believe, giving a clear view of the importance of angels as messengers and / or warriors only and not deity (Revelation 19:10).

If you are one who has had an interest in studying the subject of angles in the bible, you will certainly enjoy this book and find a wealth of biblical based information and resources to further your study.

I think what I've liked most is the way Dr. David Jeremiah presents this material. I've just finished the section on being guided through biblical history with a view on the angels. The guide shares that we should watch the angels hands and then shows how their hands focus on touching us. Along the way, the guide takes us back and goes through history again with our eyes only on the messages, and again, only on their warrior position in heaven. I loved how he broke out those elements and helped me understand what angels really do and what their purpose really is.

I've never fallen for the cherubic child angel or the pretty tree topper version. But I didn't focus on the reality either. I let angels sit out there in space somewhere, not dealing with what I understood or didn't understand about them.

Now I comprehend the purpose God has given to angels (though I'm sure this book is not comprehensive because God is not done with all of us yet.) But I think the most important thing about this book at this time is busting down the misunderstandings about God's creation and use of angels.

I highly recommend Angels: Who They Are and How They Help in your own study of the bible. As Dr. Jeremiah points out, angels were created by God and are not to be worshiped. They carry out a mission for God, from God, to us and for us.

People all over seem to be fascinate by angels and long to know more about them. Some claim they have seen angels and yet others deny their existence. In this new book, Angels by Dr. David Jeremiah, he teaches us about angels according to the Bible. In fourteen chapters - 222 pages - Dr. Jeremiah covers what angels are, when they appear, the part of angels in death, and much more. Included in the back of the book is scriptural index for easy reference.

I personally enjoyed the teaching in this book and found it helpful in understanding angels as an adult and answer the questions my children have, too. Dr. Jeremiah is an excellent teacher and explains things in simple terms that anyone can grasp. The stories and examples bring it to life for those of us who have never had our own "angel experience" and you will want to hold onto this book for future reference. The only downside to this book is that it is not what I would consider a light read. While it is a wonderful book, and very helpful, it does take time to digest it. However, what learn will be worth the time.

Angels have become a part of pop culture today with many misconceptions of what they are and their purpose in our lives. People have imagined fanciful ideas of what they want angels to be. Dr. David Jeremiah has taken a who, what, where, when, why and , how approach from scripture to explain what our proper relationship to angels should be.

Taking examples of angels from scripture the author reminds us of some very interesting facts. For example, angels are always one-way messengers. They are God’s messengers to us and never our messenger to God. Although we do not know how many angels there are, Dr. Jeremiah explains from scripture that there are multitudes – innumerable.

There is an explanation of how and where angels appear to man and several stories of modern day likely appearances of angels in protection of people. The description of fiery beings surrounding missionaries is a fascinating story. The most powerful to me was the chapter “Coming to Take Me Home” which not only moved me to tears, but gave me great peace at the same time.

This is an interesting and thoughtful look at angels that will dispel any misunderstandings the reader may have.

Angels by Dr. David Jeremiah is an indepth study on the truth behind these mysterious messengers of God. The worship of angels has been going on for millenia, Paul wrote about the dangers of it in his epistles. Now there are books and groups teaching about angels who help their people find good parking spots or great deals at the mall. That is nothing like the angels portrayed in the Bible, and the author does his best to put aside the myths and focus on what we know from Scripture. There is much to be gleaned from these writings: they are messengers and warriors, they are sexless and ageless, and we can learn much from them. They live to worship and obey the Lord. I do wish that Dr. Jeremiah had included more anecdotes about angels today. The few stories were fascinating and did much to hook the reader, but they taper off quickly in the book and would have been powerful examples to demonstrate each point the author wanted to make. This book sets to rest many of the myths about angels and will encourage readers to keep their worship where it belongs: on God.

short review: David Jeremiah brings his expert Bible-teaching skills to a little-known and not widely understood topic—angelology. He breaks down what the Bible says about angels, how we should view them, and what role they play in the Christian life. A great, comprehensive overview, one that will answer your burning questions and queries about the subject. It delves into the depths of angelology while also instructing Christians how to have a healthy view of angels and their place in God’s plan.

reading notes:

I had this on loan from my workplace to review, and I was working through a whole stack of loaned books. Needless to say, I read this so fast that all the angel names kind of blurred together and my takeaway was "Angels are real and they aren't cute fairies." Which I knew, but I couldn't articulate it in the level of detail which this book has now made possible. "Giant flaming swords," lest anyone forget.

Dr. David Jeremiah brings to light the biblical accounts of angels and that they worship God. If we focus on angels we are taking away from God which is wrong. He distinguishes between biblical angels and "angelism", as well as also states that all angels are not from God, after all lucifer was an angel at one point as well. Dr. Jeremiah provides reliable resources, such as accounts from Billy Graham or Corrie Tenboom.

I was impressed with this book and appreciated his down to earth take of these angelic creations. It's a bit heavy, but in a good way. I think if you are looking for a through study of God's word on angels you will enjoy this book. I will be probably reading it again when I want to study more on angels!

This book will give you a literal view of angels—they’re nothing like what we imagine them, and they’re nothing like what contemporary fiction makes them out to be, either (angels serving God or fallen angels both). They are warriors—glorious, perfect, merciless warriors.

The best thing about this book is that Dr. Jeremiah is very centered with what the Bible says. The Bible is our ultimate source of truth, and if we have a “religious experience” that contradicts the Bible, if we begin to worship Angels more than God, if we get wrapped up in what he calls “Angelmania,” we have a serious problem.

Angels is insightful and clarifying, and it answers many questions both that I’ve had and others I’d never even thought about.

I enjoyed reading Angels by Dr. David Jeremiah and recommend the book to anyone interested in exploring the world of the angels. After reading the book, I found many opportunities to start conversations about angels, discuss our perceptions and quote scripture verse about these messengers. I enjoyed going through the book and following where Angels appear in the Bible. Scripture by scripture, David Jeremiah showed me what angels - and what angels are not. I enjoyed taking this book chapter by chapter - learning more and ore about the Angels of the Bible.... sadly, something I had never taken the time to do before.
I found this book to be a great learning tool and I recommend it to everyone wanting to learn more about angels.

I'm very glad I won this book in the Goodreads Giveaway drawing. I've never actually given much thought to angels on a conscious level, but I have certainly taken them for granted at a subconscious level so when I saw this book, I decided I wanted to learn more. David Jeremiah does an indepth study for us of what Angels are and what they are not using hundreds of bible references to back up his answers. I was really impressed with the amount of detailed thought that went into this book and found that I learned quite a lot. I actually think about and am a lot more aware of angels' purpose and presence than I thought and I'm glad I took the time to learn more about them. Definetly a good one for anyone who believes in angels, and maybe even for those who don't.

I got this book because I've been seeing things about angels that I don't know what to think about. My grandmother has little cherub angels on her dresser. I've seen elegant female angel statues but don't recall angels ever being referred to as female in the bible. I wasn't something that helped separate fact from fiction. This book was that and so much more.

I'd previously read The Truth About Angels, I think it's by Terry Law. I really enjoyed the book but this book by David Jeremiah takes things further. It separates fact from fiction but also has enriched my Christian path, showing me what I am and am not, by showing what angels are and aren't.

This is a book that if you're interested in the subject matter, you will likely want to add to your collection.

If you ever wondered how angels really “work” and what they do this book is for you

In this 270 pages plus book Dr. Jeremiah goes over almost every aspect scripture tells us about angels. I really wanted to know about angels as they always portrayed in pop culture as a man with wings and a sword who fights demons, but in reality they do so much more. Their roles are numerous but are all connected to serve god and ultimately help us in becoming closer to god ourselves. The authors goes through great length at citing his sources and it seems he is really an expert in bible studies. The language is very relatable and complex ideas are explained well. It gave me the answers I was looking. Thank you David, looking forward for your next book !

First my thanks to WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for providing me a copy to review and a copy to giveaway. I found Dr. David Jeremiah’s book to be quite enlightening and had me looking at angels differently than I had in the past. I appreciated how he reminds us that Angels are all around us yet we are not to worship them as idols.

"Remember, however, that angels are always one-way messengers. They are God’s messengers to us, and never our messengers to God. No one in Scripture ever prays to an angel, and neither should we."

This is definitely a keeper for the shelves and for that I give it 4 stars.

I read this book as part of a women’s study group. While we will never know everything about Angels, this book shows us several key things the Bible reveals about who they are and their purpose of being there for us when we face critical issues. We can all strive to be angel-like in this world! We’re required to consider & understand good & evil, angels steer us but we make the decisions on whether we will follow. Dr. David Jeremiah helps in showing us what the Bible reveals, to better recognize & understand these messengers from God! If our hearts are right, God may allow us to recognize an angel...!

I appreciated this book filling me in on all the scriptural text regarding angels. I learned a great deal. One interesting thing occurred while I was reading. The bookmark I was using was one I have had for many years. It had an old-fashioned picture on one side of a little girl walking on a bridge over a brook. She was holding the hand of a young woman. On the back side of the bookmark it had written “A Prayer to My Guardian Angel”. When I got to Dr. Jeremiah’s section on guardian angels that explained why we should not pray to angels I stopped short. Wow! I never heard that perspective before. Don’t pray to angels only to God. Dr. Jeremiah is right: only God can answer prayers.

This is the second book I have read by David Jeremiah and it was excellent just like the first one. The focus of this book is to look at angels from a Biblical perspective. Jeremiah wrote this book with the intent of dispelling many myths people have about angels and their purpose. I have always been intrigued by angels and how they operate within God's plan and after reading this book, I feel I have a solid Biblical basis to comprehend both how angels glorify God and how they interact with mankind. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding angels from Scripture.

I was seeking to understand these heavenly beings from a biblical standpoint because they have become so misrepresented in society. To experience God and His wisdom is awesome, but to picture how big He is through this book and it's biblical context and soundness and get intimate with the understanding of angels was beyond what I had hoped for. I highly recommend this book for everyone because of its beauty, depth and reality it will transform into your life with plenty of time in the bible and with Christ. Read it!!

Have read several of David Jeremiah's books, and have enjoyed them. He has a way of presenting complex and difficult Biblical concepts in ways that novice Bible readers can understand and not be overwhelmed by. This is the lowest rating I've ever given any of his material. I believe that there simply wasn't enough scriptural material for this book, and therefore it was fleshed out with a lot of conceptual (not scriptural, but not heretical) comment and "fluff". I read it off and on over a period of time. I hated to not finish it, but it was a struggle for me to do so.

David Jeremiah’s Angels provides readers with a scripturally based, clearly written discussion of angels and their roles in the Christian life. Throughout the book, Jeremiah does an excellent job dispelling secular and religious myths and misconceptions through Biblical documentation. He also references revered Christian scholars that adds credibility to his clearly presented viewpoints. After reading this book, I am challenged to reread Billy Graham’s Angels Angels Angels, which I think will be a good companion book.
