Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

when oda isn’t busy dragging fights out for ten volumes straight or having the sense of “humour” of a five year old snotty-nosed brat, he is very good at creating an emotional story and i hate him for that

Brook makes for an unusual Straw Hat: he doesn't have a tragically dead mentor or friend in his backstory - there's his whole crew, but in a way they're all still alive in his dial - and it all comes across as strangely hopeful and going forward in comparison to what the others all went through. His dream is not nearly as nebulous or difficult or far-reaching as the dreams of the others: he knows exactly what he has to do and how to do it. All he needs to do is to make a return.

Finally done with Thriller Bark and it's off to new adventures... but not without adding in one final mystery. But at the time of this reading we're nearing the endgame of the whole story, and Oda's been greatly streamlining his writing to get us there faster and with no inconveniences, so I suppose this one mystery will go unsolved for all time. That's fine: you should always leave a few mysteries for the next generation (which I'm sure will arrive, because this cash cow cannot be allowed to die).

Zoro's iconic moment is in here, if I remember correctly. Truly impactful stuff. One of his best scenes in the series.

This volume was quite fun! Focusing on Luffy's fight with Moria and the way he defeats him is epic and everyone shadows return which was fun to see and the way they partied and showed Brooks origin was emotional, that one was painful and his connection with Laboon wow! But the crew get their 8th member and a musician! Loved this volue and a good end to the THRILLER BARK saga and then we go to the fisherman island one! They come across a mermaid Camie and have to fight some "makuro gang" and their leader Duval who seems to have a connection with the strawhats! This volume was good and had some big moments and all, and explored some good recent pasts and ZORO had an amazing moment when facing that guy Kuma! Lots of stuff happened and we begin the new world saga here I guess!

This volume starts off with Chapter 482: Morning is Coming(Arrival of Dawn).

Finally the final showdown between Luffy and Moria is coming to a close. This was one battle that I honestly thought that Luffy really struggled in. Though most of this Arc was comical to a point, and there was a lot of character growth for many of the chracters. Also Brooks is an awesome character, and I love him down to the Bone!

I'll write more when my editing mode hits.
Happy Readings!

( 01. ) AFTERMATH :: ˖᯽ ݁˖˚. ᵎᵎ
⤷ The strawhats have finally completely defeated Gecko Moria and Oars, the mad beast. The pirate gang rejoice and save Luffy’s and the crew who have suffered many wounds and bruises as their thanks for saving them. Thriller bark falls and everyone’s shadows are returned! After using his “gear” transformations, Luffy is knocked unconscious from the overuse of them and is about to be taken away by the “Rolling Pirates Gang” and healed but before they’re able to, Bartholomew Kuma appears out of nowhere. The World Government demands that the Strawhat Crew and everyone on Thriller Bark Island must be annihilated to ensure there’s no witnesses of Gecko Moria’s defeat and the fact that the Strawhat Pirates have bested another one of their Schikibukai’s as it’ll “Tarnish their prestigious title.”
Bartholomew Kuma reveals that he has eaten the “Paw-Paw” devil fruit and is able to teleport anyone to a place of his choosing and repel anything with his paw hands! He decides to start by fighting Zoro, and he accepts the challenge immediately believing that if he were to die there then he wasn’t worth living anyways, he made a promise to Luffy to become the greatest swordsman and if he’s unable to stand up ready to defend and protect his crew and especially the vulnerable unconscious Luffy, then he’ll never forgive himself so he doesn’t allow any of the crew to join in the fight as it’ll humiliate him if they butt in. Every one of Zoro’s attacks don’t effect Kuma or even touch him as his paw hands allow him to repel the attacks, without laying a finger, Kuma is able to wear him out completely. Once Zoro is finally able to cut him, he realises Kuma is a cyborg like Franky and is made of material stronger than iron, meaning he’s able to physically wound him. Bartholomew Kuma gives background on what he is and how he was made:

I am called a “PACIFISTA” I am the World Government’s HUMAN WEAPON. , but not yet complete … I was created by the World Government’s resident genius; “Dr . Vegapunk”. He possesses the world’s greatest mind! His scientific prowess is said to be 500 years ahead of mankind.

Combined with the devil fruit, Bartholomew Kuma is indeed incredibly strong, however this was expected for one of the Schikibukai’s! However, acknowledging the gap in strength between himself and Kuma he refuses to give up the fight. Kuma attempts to make a compromise with Zoro, telling him he and the crew can leave in peace if he allows him to take Luffy’s head! Obviously Zoro says no, instead he offers his own head … he says he’s doing this because although he’s not as popular or strong as Luffy, he must save his crew and there’s no other way of doing so but sacrificing his life:

What good is ambition if I can’t even save the life of my captain? Luffy … is the man who will become KING OF THE PIRATES!!!
៸៸៸ We love to see the crew believe in his dream just as much as he does himself, but sanji appears next to Zoro, telling him he can’t give up on his dreams so easily, that instead of Zoro’s head, Kuma should take his instead “Black Foot Sanji” who although isn’t a cause for concern for the World Government now, he will be in the future so it’s best to take him now whilst he’s still weak. He tells Zoro to tell the rest of the crew to “ Start looking for a new cook and that he sends his regards … “ and yes I did start tearing up because they’re all just willing to give up their dreams in order to protect the crew from danger and keep Luffy’s dream alive. :(

Zoro nonchalantly knocks Sanji unconscious with the back of his sword, completely ignoring Sanji’s speech and retakes his stand, ready to fight. He tells Kuma that if he were to lay a hand on Luffy after Zoro has shown he’s a man it would be shameful. So as now promised, he doesn’t kill Luffy, instead he gives Zoro a ”Glimpse of Hell”: he extracts sum total of anguish and suffering Luffy has endured during the battle with Gecko Moria and in order to keep the promise, Zoro must accept his agony into his body. Zoro is already new death with his support in the battle, the amount of pain extracted will most likely kill him, Kuma makes that known to him, even giving him a tiny amount of the pain to show him how bad it truly is, that small amount shocked Zoro to his core, he is in so much pain from that drop alone and that’s not even half of whats been extracted.

The next time we see Luffy, he’s all bandaged up however is in no pain at all, and is surprised to feel so good after the gruelling battle with Gecko Moria. Sanji refuses to believe that Kuma just let them go that easily and goes out to look for Zoro. He finds him standing on top of mounds of rocks, with his blood splattered everywhere … Sanji repeatedly asks what happened between him and the Schikibukai however Zoro just replies:

NOTHING … AT ALL.
៸៸៸ And I think that this response is the perfect portrayal of who Zoro is as a character, he’s willingly agreed to sacrifice his life for the sake of his captain, Luffy. And let it go unnoticed just like that. He doesn’t seek attention or praise, he simply sees it as the only sensible and moral duty of a crew member, to sacrifice one’s life to keep the dream of his captains alive. He was 100% willing to die for Luffy and his dreams, he believe so deeply in the fact that Luffy would definitely become King of the Pirates no matter what hardship he endured and to show his own appreciation and belief, took all his pain away and gave it to himself. I love Zoro so much, I’m having a hard time picking between him and Nami but I think after this, he’s gotta be #1, he’s such a goated character and even his speech at Water 7 about Usopp having to apologise before rejoining the crew, and all the previous volumes before this, Zoro is so eager to sacrifice, to stand in front of danger and protect those he loves or those that are weaker and for that, I love him the most!

A day after the battle, the crew prepare to start leaving and start packing their food and supplies in order to set sail. Brook plays a song on the piano: “Bink’s Brew”, a song sang by many pirates in the old days, during hard and happy times. He tells Luffy that he has one of his Nakama waiting for him at the start of the Grand Line, Luffy happily recounts the time he bet “Laboon” and how he promised to come back and finish their battle but until them, he could no longer harm himself waiting for his old crew ( Brook’s crew who unfortunately all died before they could come back and brook’s couldn’t leave Thriller Bark due to his shadow being taken! ) We get to see Brook’s flashback with his lively crew, when he met Laboon and the story of how he never got to see him again … he asks his crew to sing their favourite song one last time until he’s the last one standing on the ship, playing “Bink’s Brew” as every member dropped dead from disease, Brook was lonely for 50 years, with his own crew’s bones as company. He’s finally found another crew to call home and they promise to go see Laboon again on the “right side” of the grand line, he asks Laboon, wherever he is, if he can wait a few more years and he’ll come see him again! This is the end of the “Thriller Bark” island arc. They officially accept Brook into the crew and when on their way to the next island, they see the “Red Line”, they all get emotional, recalling early memories of the crew and their own personal journeys to East Blue. Luffy says that he’s going to sail around the other half of the world, where they’ll encounter the “Red Line” again and that time, Luffy promises to be King of the pirates! Finally, they’re on their way to fish man Island, where they’ll be getting further and deeper into the grand line!

( 02. ) ACE AND WORLD GOVERNMENT :: ˖᯽ ݁˖˚. ᵎᵎ
⤷ After Gecko Moria was defeated, his assistants Dr . Hogback and Absalom (Perona’s whereabouts are still not known) discuss what’s been happening in the newspapers; Blackbeard has been titled as the new replacement for Crocodile. However that’s the unimportant part … we find out that Commander of Whitebeard’s Second Division, “Fire-Fist” Ace is currently awaiting EXECUTION in the great prison of ”Impel Down”!? Since Ace is know as Whitebeard’s Top Henchman, the World Government believes they’ve scored a “Big Win” however it’s said to be that this situation may signal a big change in the age of pirates!

( 03. ) NEW CHARACTERS :: ˖᯽ ݁˖˚. ᵎᵎ

Lola
Once she gets her shadow back, her pirate gang tells the crew about ”FishMan Island” and what the mermaids look like. Wondering how they know so much, Lola and her gang reveal that they themselves passed through ”FishMan Island” and after they ended up in Thriller Bark they couldn’t leave without their shadows! They tell the crew that instead of “going through” the New World they were in fact “coming from” New World!! Super interesting to see characters who have already experience the New World, it makes me excited for the crew to get there themselves!!
Lola gives Nami a:
Vive Card, also known as the "Paper of Life; is a piece of paper made from a person's fingernail clipping, t is completely waterproof and fireproof, though it can be torn. The pieces can then be given to a friend whom one would be separated from. The torn pieces will point to and move towards each other no matter where they are in the world, allowing one to always be able to tell which direction the other person is in. The life force of the owner, the person whose fingernail the Vivre Card was made from, is reflected on the paper. If the life force of the owner is weakening, the card will begin to burn away. It will grow back to its original size if the person recovers, but will disintegrate completely if they die.
Because Vive Cards are only used in the new world, the crew doesn’t realise that it’s the same kind of paper that Ace gave to liffy when they met in Alabasta, when Kuffy pulls out Ace’s Vive Card it’s burnt at the edges and therefore means Ace’s live is on the verge of being snuffed out!
Lola tells Nami that her mother is also a Pirate and she wants to give her the paper as she sees her like a “sister” now after she saved her and her gang, she says that it’s bound to come in handy. Luffy refuses to worry about Ace, knowing that his big brother wouldn’t want him to come “saving” him and would rather meet up with him when the cards back to normal again … but the reader knows, unlike Luffy, that Ace is on his way to certain death and if Luffy doesn’t find out soon, his brother will die before they reunite. I thought this would be the time we get more backstory on Luffy’s childhood with ace, however we didn’t get any of that, I think they’ll probably do that when Ace is on the brink of death or when they reunite …? And then itll just completely break my heart like Oda does every time…

Camie & Starfish
When trying to find a way to get to ”FishMan Island”, the crew encounter a ‘sea rabbit’, not seeing it as a real threat, Luffy attacks the rabbit, however once punched, something is spat out from its mouth! A mermaid and a starfish crush into the ship and once they get their bearings, introduce themselves as Camie, “The Kissing Gourami” mermaid and her talking pet Starfish, Pappagu, whose also her teacher. I actually realised who these people were before they introduced themselves as they’re from Cover Stories which are created on the title pages of each One Piece volume of, they’re from “Hatchan’s Seafloor Stroll”:

Having escaped from the marine ship where he is held, Hatchan (From Arlong Park) returns to beneath the sea and helps a panda shark. This sets off a series of trades and adventures, culminating in the discovery of a new friend, Camie the mermaid, and the fulfillment of his dream - a takoyaki stand.

Camie gets a call that Hachi has been taken by the Makuro Gang ( who constantly target crime) and have teamed up with the Flying Fish Riders to capture him and sell him for a good price. If Camie wants to rescue him, she has to meet them at ”Sabaody Archipelago” on Grove 44 which is the base of the Flying Fish Rider’s Kidnapping Gang … Nami says that her and the crew will help in exchange for directions on how to get to ”FishMan Island”, however she’s yet to discover that Hachi the Octopus is the same fishman who worked alongside Arlong! With the help of the marine fish Camie recruited for help to get to ”Sabaody Archipelago”, the crew make their way to this mysterious island where the unexpected is waiting for them …
Pappagu tells the crew of the heinous island of ”Sabaody Archipelago”, in this are, people are sold and bought like cattle and treated like slaves, mermaids being the highest pay … meaning Camie’s life is in potential danger if she goes to the Island.

Duval
The boss of Flying Fish Rider’s Kidnapping Gang who wears an iron mask, apparently no one has ever seen his face behind the mask! Pappagu tells the crew that Duval and his fish riders have been searching for someone and stop every ship that passes through their waters in order to find their target. Once Duval sees the Strawhat crew approaching, he sends out his fish riders to apprehend them and without warning, they suddenly attack the Thousand Sunny ship, they have the advantage as the fishes are able to fly for 5 minutes and can attack from above. From the flying riders reactions, the Strawhat crew must be Duval’s target and they prepare to gather the crew up and take them to the boss, including the mermaid as they sell for insanely high prices. At the Makuro Gang’s hideout, Duval is notified that it is indeed the pirate ship he’s been searching for is in his waters:

The very pirate ship I’ve been searching for all this time…! I will KILL him. The man who ruined my life!?
៸៸៸ He must have some sort of grudge against the crew, thankfully, it seems like he’s adamant about killing a certain person in the crew rather than all of them … I wonder who he’s talking about?

The arc finally came to an end. Also it was really amazing to see how zoro and sanji were willing to sacrifice their lives for Luffy. Also there's a hint for the next arc that is just exciting. I'm officially in love with these characters. Every part of them is amazing and they make this story just adventurous and magical!

One Piece, Vol. 50 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (482–491) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon concludes the Thriller Bark Arc. Geckō Moria, like Monkey D. Luffy before him, is given the strength of all the shadows he has absorbed. However, Moria has absorbed more shadows than he can handle, and with each successful blow Luffy lands on him he loses some of the excess shadows. When Luffy drops the whole of Thriller Bark on him, Moria loses all of his shadows, which quickly return to their original owners.

No longer fearing the sun, the Straw Hats and the inhabitants of Thriller Bark begin to celebrate, only to be cut short by the arrival of Bartholomew Kuma, who has been sent to take Luffy's head, something nobody on Thriller Bark will allow. Kuma easily deals with all of them, but before he can kill Luffy, Roronoa Zoro convinces him to spare the Straw Hat captain. Kuma leaves and they resume their celebration.

With Brook free to walk in the sun, he joins the Straw Hats in leaving Thriller Bark and moving on to their next adventure.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. It concludes the Thriller Bark Arc, which lasted forty-eight chapters over five tankōbon. As one of the shorter story arcs, not much happens besides the main story, but Roronoa Zoro gains a sword – Shusui and Brook joins the Straw Hat Pirates as the newest member of the crew.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 50 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

This volume has two of my absolute favorite parts in the whole series: Zoro vs. Kuma and Brook’s backstory. Even though I’ve rewatched this part of the anime so many times, reading it for the first time was still amazing!!

I’m a slow reader so it’s usually hard for me to finish a whole volume in a day, but this time I binged it easily. It was such a fun experience! Plus, there’s something special about reading the physical copy.

With the wheel-spinning Thriller Bark arc finishing, and a new member recruited, Eiichiro Oda can get back to advancing One Piece's main plot. Most of this volume concerns the crew's return to the world-spanning Red Line, a sign they've made it halfway round the world. And - perhaps appropriately - most of the plot beats the book strikes feel like remixes of previous memorable moments. The meeting with an apparently unstoppable foe with inscrutable reasons for sparing the crew; the lengthy and tragic new member flashback; the chance meeting with someone who gets the next bit of story underway.

Some of this works well, some doesn't: Zolo's self-sacrifice doesn't expand his character at all, but is a great use of what we knew already. The technical flash - all that cross-cutting through locations and times - of Brook's backstory covers up the fact that we've learned most of it already. Still, the series is as stylish and funny as ever, and momentum is certainly returning.

This volume has one of my all time favourite scenes: nothing happened. When Zoro takes on all of Luffy’s pain and suffering for that one moment...it’s incredible. Zoro is the best of the crew, hands down.

Also...Luffy meeting a mermaid and immediately asking her how she poops is hilarious
