Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.

As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

I've been reading One Piece since 2007. Rushing for every new chapter as soon as they popped out on the internet, grabbing every volume as they show up in the stores where I live, talking about it with friends and family, reading internet theories, immersing myself into the setting and the characters, laughing and crying and raging, and looking forward to the future and the ever-nearing end. I've known it longer than all the real-life friends I have. It has its highs and its lows, but at the end of the day there's no other story I've gotten into as much as One Piece.

I'm prefacing the review with all this stuff so that you know, when I say this one volume is the peak One Piece, the best it's ever been, you know I mean what I say.

There's Robin's final rescue and the ensuing cathartic comeuppance and, most importantly, her heartfelt thanks to those that came to her rescue, and - hilariously - Luffy just brushing it off with a "Don't mention it". And speaking of Luffy, there's a great final battle with a new special technique and a big endurance contest and, again most importantly, being pep-talked back up by a friend that wasn't even supposed to be there, with a great and memorable speech, a heartfelt reminder of just what he's fighting for in the first place. And then they all need to get the hell out of here, only possible by Sanji's trickery and guile and the surprise appearance of another ally, another crew member that wasn't supposed to be there - and the one time in the story, one of the few times anywhere period, that I always cry at. Then the cry for victory, the reaffirmation that they basically went on against the world and triumphed, and one final somber moment in a lightly falling snow, complete with flashbacks.

Other parts of the story have their own highs - a few of the highs possibly higher than some here - but none are as tightly packed with great and iconic moments, none so crystal-clear condense just what the story is about and why so many of us love to read it. This one volume is the absolute peak. Its mere existence bumps the rest of the volumes down to four and a half stars, at best, because if they were five-starers then this one would go above the scale, and we can't have that.

Okay you have a list of chores to get done before you can sit down, and read this volume.
1.Go to the bathroom.
2.Get a snack and drink.
3.Get a box of Kleenex.
4.Make sure you have optimal concentration.
5.Make sure you are alone.

I'm talking about something as dramatic as this...

First you have a lot of "Hell yeah!" moments at the very beginning.
Get ready to cry because... (and I'm warning you now this is a spoiler! Don't read the spoiler if you don't want it ruined!)

So much love to all of you my friends,

One Piece, Vol. 44 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next eleven chapters (420–430) of the on-going manga series.

This tankōbon finally concludes the Enies Lobby Arc. As the battle between Monkey D. Luffy and Rob Lucci rages on, the destruction of Enies Lobby commences. The members of Galley-La and the "Franky Family" evacuate as the government employees have done, and the Straw Hats secure an escape route to use after Lucci's defeat.

However, once Luffy wins, Enies Lobby's destroyers unite in their efforts to finish off the crew that beat Cipher Pol 9. Just when they lose their last piece of refuge, the Straw Hats are able to escape on the Going Merry, it having come to save them in their time of need.

The crew joins with Galley-La and the Frankies and returns to Water Seven. However, the Going Merry begins to break down during the trip – beyond repair, so with heavy hearts the crew says goodbye to the vessel and gives it a Viking funeral.

This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Eiichirō Oda. For the most part it is written and constructed rather well. It finally concludes the Enies Lobby Arc, which lasted for fifty-six chapters over six tankōbon. Many keypoints are revealed in this storyline as Nico Robin rejoins the Straw Hat Pirates and several power-ups for the crew are introduced as they fought Cipher Pol 9. Furthermore, Roronoa Zoro loses one of his swords and surprisingly the Going Merry sinks.

All in all, One Piece, Vol. 44 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

I'm very conflicted about this volume. One one hand the fight between Luffy and Rob Lucci just might be the best in this entire series. HOWEVER, I think I'm in the minority here when I say I hate the ship's farewell scene. I thought it packed so much more of a punch when it was literally just a ship. But now it's actually talking to them? It has a soul? I'm sorry, but I really didn't like that. It would've hit way harder for me if it was literally just a ship, but each member had their own reasons for being attached to it. Such a missed opportunity. Now it makes the conflict between Luffy and Usopp seem useless. It just makes Luffy outright wrong now, when before you could understand where both of them were coming from. I thought giving the ship an actual personality was a silly way to wrap up that arc.

Still cried for this devastating part everytime! Merry Go!!! We will always miss you!! Ahhhhhh!! This volume reminded me how much I love all of the strawhat crew! They are the best pirate crew ever! Their relationship, friendship, determination and fate! I love them! They are my favourite ensembles of all time! As the Shonen Jump motto has it, "Friendship, Effort, Victory" - and One Piece has never lived up to that so hard. The Water Seven saga comes to a climax and the past ten or so volumes' worth of plots - Robin's capture, Usopp and Luffy's split, the CP9 fight, and the damaged Going Merry - all get enormously satisfying payoffs. This kind of thing is why people read One Piece. The final chapters, focusing on the Going Merry, are doused in sentiment, but the peak moment for me involves Luffy and the end of the "Sniper King" plot - it's Oda at his best, taking what's been an absurd running joke for several volumes and suddenly revealing it as the pivotal factor in the final battle. Glorious work.

After almost ten years I came back to this story. I remember that it was moving, touching and I was sad. Though now, the funeral scene completely broke and shattered me. Damn, that is some great stuff.

Overall this volume is amazing. So many memorable scenes and the emotions are even enhanced because I know what happens and can just enjoy it for what it is. This is so perfect it made me order the third box set. Yay,

"The seafloor is dark and lonely...so we're going to see you off!!"

Knew what was coming and I still sobbed. There's not really anyone who can tell a story like Oda. The man has a direct line to my tear ducts.

A thousand stars if I could.
I have watched the anime MULTIPLE times. I am extremely familiar with the whole story. I will literally sob like a child (and I mean literally wailing, tears streaming down, runny nose, screamining-crying) everytime they have to say goodbye to the Merry. It's incredibly touching. Thank you, Merry, for everything you've done for us. It is time to let you rest. You'll always be part of the crew.
