He wasn’t by any definition the ‘leader’ of our group, but he was the grumpiest and the most responsible, so that somehow translated to him policing most of the rules… but he definitely wasn’t the leader. If the leader was anyone, it would definitely be me-
I was light. I was fire. I was invincible.
“She thinks she’s light,” Aros muttered to Siret. “If she jumps off the platform, it’s on you.”
“She sets things on fire,” Coen announced without preamble.
“All the time,” Siret added.
Rome shrugged. “It’s her thing.”
I really wanted to argue with them: it was not my thing. If anything was my thing it was … swimming. Arghh. Of course that would be the first thing on my mind, because I was addicted to se—swimming now. No, Willa! For gods’ sake, this was not the time. My thing was being naked, which was marginally better. Yael laughed out loud, which had a perfect O forming on Adeline’s full lips. I wasn’t surprised: Yael wasn’t really the laughing kind.”
Right, I forgot they didn’t like me to use the domestic labour beasts as a reference point for relationship development. Unfortunately for them, my influence in this department had been limited to my mother’s relationships, growing up. Unless they wanted me to start charging them tokens for swimming lessons, they needed to let me pull references from wherever I wanted. Although, the ‘Abcurse’ way of mating sounded a lot nicer. The bullsen grunted too much, and I didn’t even want to think about what kind of noises my mother had made.
Siret lost it then, his laughter setting off the rest of the guys at the table.
"I really wish she’d stop saying undead,” Aros groaned.
Siret snorted. “You haven’t suffered until she starts talking about it while you’re naked.”
Aros was silent for a click, before shrugging. “Still worth it.”
"How could you tell the difference between mountain sickness and her usual sickness?” Cyrus asked dryly. “Was she talking crazy? Tripping over things? Or did she have a completely normal conversation with you while keeping her clothes on the entire time?”
I crossed my arms over my chest, choosing to be the bigger person and not acknowledge his words. Mostly because they were… well, accurate.
"Will it help if I solve this little conundrum right now?" I asked, still receiving no response. I sighed, moving to stand directly between them. "Okay, here's the situation. Cyrus, big scary Neutral God, thinks that Emmanuelle, lowly dirt-dweller, has a really nice butt."
Emmy blinked, switching her gaze to me for the barest moment.
“And Emmanuelle kind of wants Cyrus to be touching all her stuff even though she complains about it, which means she kind of likes him-“

“I’m sorry, okay? I wasn’t aware that this was something I could do. I mean, they don’t exactly teach you about penis-manifestation in the dweller schools. It’s more about cleaning and bowing and scrubbing pans. Will you let me fix it?”
“FIX IT!” she screamed in response, her hands balling up into fists.
“Alright, jeez. Calm down, it’s just a penis. We all have them.”
“You do?” the Seduction sol asked, her eyebrows shooting up.
“Well yeah,” I waved a hand behind me. “I have theirs. So technically I have five of them. But that’s not really important. Can you please take her arms so that she doesn’t punch me?”

"I have never seen six beings mesh so seamlessly before. A bond to surpass all others."
When it comes to Strength by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington, all I can really think about is... what the hell even happened with this? This series hasn't really been standing strong with me to begin with, but at least with the last two books there seemed to be some semblance of improvement. Now, it feels like I've been transported all the way back to book one and all of book one's terribleness.
Prepare for some minor spoilers... and a small rant.
The premise surrounding Strength seemed promising: Willa and the Abcurse brothers, along with a bunch of other Betas and sols, are sent to Champions Peak, a secluded mountain far from civilization where sols are to train with their pairing Beta gods in order to prepare for ascension into Topia.
Sounds intriguing, right? Especially with the blandness of the previous three books, this part of the story actually seems interesting. There's potential for new characters to be included and old characters to be more developed. There is a chance for some more world building to occur. And a secluded mountain filled to the brim with tense sols and gods ready to get shit done so that they aren't killed by Staviti? This is a receipt for action galore!
But were any of these things present?
No.
Instead, we just get more of the same. Barely anything new has happened. It's more of Willa's antics and Willa fawning over the Abcurses and the Abcurses being freakishly obsessed with Willa. Not only is the main plot being downright ignored, random events are being thrown in that don't add to the plot whatsoever. It's like they want us to forget what the story is even about so that we aren't paying attention to where it's going. Not feeling the "romance" between Willa and the Abcurses? Here, we'll throw you a romance between Emmy and Cyrus, but we're gonna keep any context and understanding of it to ourselves! Oh, things are getting a little boring? Let's just randomly kill someone! That will surely spice things up! But don't worry, we won't actually kill the important characters, we'll bring them back to life just as randomly as we killed them!
Like, I get how this could be interesting if it was done right, but it was not done right at all. When new things were introduced, they were done so tritely. And I'm talking about BIG plot points here. Willa's powers, Staviti's origin story, Willa's still-developing relationship with the Abcurses... all things that should be given the time and consideration that they deserve. They shouldn't take a backseat to all the "perfect and amazing" sex that Willa is now suddenly having.
Speaking of sex, I've never been so bored by a sex scene a very long time. I'm all for sex and erotica but, just like everything else, it needs to be done right. The sex that Willa was having with the Abcurses was just too perfect. So perfect to the point that it was unrealistic. The sex scenes were gratuitous in a book where practically everything else seems gratuitous to begin with. I recently read a blog post entitled "Rules of Writing Erotic Fiction" over on Christian Mihai's blog: irevuo. It gives excellent advice and guidelines on creating erotic fiction. The erotic scenes in Strength read this post, took down notes for every good point mentioned, and then set all of the notes on fire and chucked the ashes out of a window so that they would never have to reference them again. Unrealistic and uninteresting is what I would associate most with the attempted erotica in this installment.
Back to the plot, I know I've trashed on it a lot, but it's mainly because I'm just so disappointed. There's so much potential and the ideas within the book have so much going for them, but they are more often than not just left to fizzle out and die. Like Willa's powers, for instance. Why isn't there more focus on this? She's the main protagonist and a major driver of the plot - anything surrounding her should be pushed to the forefront. But sadly, even though it is book four out of five in the series, we still know absolutely nothing about what she can do, or even what she is for that matter. There isn't anything being done with the plot points that are introduced in the book; they kind of just hover in the air while the characters decide whether or not to interact with them.
Character development is still severely lacking. How has our protagonist remained the same during all four books?! The only thing that has possibly changed about her is the development of her powers, but as mentioned above, those don't get any real development either. The Abcurses still have no role other than acting as man-candy. They stand there, look pretty, and contribute practically nothing to the plot. They still only act as a single entity - Willa may be able to tell each of her Abcurses apart, but we sure as hell can't.
Ugh, I'm just so over this series. This is the staple for the reverse-harem genre? This???
This series isn't even a guilty pleasure read for me anymore. It's just annoying at this point and I'm not impressed. I think the only reason that I have stuck with it for so long is because the reviews for it are amazing. I'm stumped, because I've got to be missing something that everyone else is seemingly obsessed with.
I'm debating whether or not to finish off this series. There's only one book left, along with a novella, but... I'm still not sure. It took me 21 days to get through this one book alone... if that tells you anything.
