Build the bridges for English language learners to reach success! Ten years ago, the first edition of Margo Gottlieb’s Assessing English Language Learners changed the dialogue about how educators envision educational equity for students. Since then, the ELL and dual language student populations have grown exponentially, and so has the need for forward-thinking and effective approaches to facilitating students’ academic language development alongside their content knowledge. This thoroughly updated edition of Gottlieb’s classic delivers a complete set of tools, techniques, and ideas for planning and implementing instructional assessment. The book
A focus on academic language use in every discipline, from mathematics to social studies, within and across language domains Emphasis on linguistically and culturally responsive assessment as a key driver for measuring academic achievement A reconceptualization of assessment "as," "for," and "of" learning Reflection questions to stimulate discussion around assessment policies and practices to maximize opportunities for teacher input and student engagement This book is an essential resource for pre-service and in-service teachers, educator teams, and school leaders striving toward equity in every classroom.

It must belong in every TESOL professional’s library!" —Andrea Honigsfeld, Associate Dean and EdD Program Director Molloy College
This book does a really nice job of explaining the difference between assessments for, assessments of, and assessments as learning. It is geared very much toward novice teachers but is a good manual to have on hand in the classroom.
I read this for a graduate course. Some good resources & important things to consider when designing/implementing assessments for ELLs. If I were a primary teacher, I probably would have found the resources more helpful.
This is one of the better books I've read about educational equity. The language and concept of assessment "as", "for", and "of" learning was a pretentious waste of time. It was an effective way for the author to present her thinking clearly, but it wasn't anything new.
I am taking a class to get an endorsement to teach ELLs in a public school system where I formerly taught. This book has very good reflection questions and examples of assessment rubrics which will be helpful in my future teaching.
I really gleaned so many things from this book to help me understand English Language Learners better and also how I can better serve them as an educator.
Read this for a course. I found some frameworks helpful, but found the organization confusing at times. Overall a solid resource, I was just hoping for more.
This book was a great reference for ESL-7003. It is filled with information and ideas to lend the novice teacher to gain a better perspective for the ESL students he/she may be teaching
