PENSAMIENTO Y POLITICA EN EL MUNDO ARABE

Rate this book

A comprehensive review of Arab intellectual output from the era of the Nahda until the present times, complete with the numerous sociocultural contexts that had a role in shaping it.

The book starts off with describing the richness of Arab thought and the diverse modes of cultural expression throughout the centuries, in spite of current political attempts in religious garb aiming to obfuscate it. This links to the question of religious vs national identity and how it lays at the heart of many attempts by Arab thinkers to come up with a solution for the current woes that affect the Middle East. Following that is the problem of enacting a concrete epistemology in regards to understanding contemporary Arab thought, not in small part due to prevailing Orientalist as well as counter-Orientalist viewpoints (e.g. “authenticity vs modernity”) that have gained traction in the wake of colonialism. Afterwards, the ever changing sociopolitical and economic factors are analyzed, ranging from the Ottoman collapse and rise in British and French imperial presence to the creation of the state of Israel and the subsequent Cold War, which birthed the radical fundamentalist movements as a result of increasing oil prices which benefited Bedouin societies such as Saudi Arabia. Throughout all these monumental events, Arab thinkers were desperately trying to make sense of the worsening circumstances and the growing disunity of the Arab world in general, which could be attributed to inexperienced political elites whose inability to govern effectively may hail from the time of Turkish and Persian rule of Muslim polities. This was especially present during the Nahda, a period of Arab renaissance characterized by intellectual openness and a yearning for all things modern, which on the aftermath of the Ottoman collapse, set the stage for a nascent Arab nationalist movement spearheaded by the likes of Sati’ al Husri as well as other provincial nationalisms focused on sub-identities (e.g Lebanon, Syria, Iraq etc.). As a result of the devastating Arab defeat in 1967 with Israel, this led to a profound identity crisis among the intelligentsia, effectively splitting it into two opposing camps, one progressive and secular camp with Marxist characteristics with the other being a reactionary Islamic movement with millenarian aspirations. The latter blamed the revolutionary nationalist movements for the failures that have characterized Arab politics, judging it to be as a result of a secular outlook on life which was deemed too materialistic and at the same time imported from outside, thus being seen as contrary to the natural state of the Arab personality. Consequently, the 1979 revolution in Iran which saw a clerical class rise to power only exacerbated the situation, drawing a substantial number of leftist groups to side with the likes of Khomeini and angering the growing Wahhabi movement who saw them as a rising competitor in the religious domain, leading to a tense atmosphere in intellectual circles concerning the discussion of Islam and modernity and how they intertwine with each other. We are then treated with an overview of Arab Christian thought as a religious discourse in addition to the ways in which Arab intellectuals have contributed to the fields of the humanities and social sciences, whose stunning analysis go deep in understanding the various challenges facing their societies (i.e. lack of industrialization and technological innovation) yet receive almost no recognition in contemporary Euro-American academia. Finally, the author calls on both Arab intellectuals as well as the youth in order to set aside the theologico-political controversies and excessive emphasis on the “authenticity vs modernity” debate in order to bring about meaningful change to the MENA region as well as raise awareness of the vast intellectual diversity that Arab thinkers over time have contributed to enrich.

A very welcome addition to the literature on Middle Eastern politics from a well known and accomplished thinker, such a work has been pending for quite some time due to the excessive focus on political Islam that academia tends to cater to, thus missing out on the hidden world of rigorous thinking in the minds of Arab intellectuals.
