Tales from the Seaside is a humorous collection of short stories reflecting on life by the seaside, attempts to successfully wrangle two small children and the result of being inspired by the sun, the sand and the sea. The perfect beach read, it will have you chuckling in your deckchair.

One of the nice things about short story collections by authors is that you can see them stretching their writing muscles.
Freed from the need to frame a longer narrative, the short story is a playground, to test out different styles, different ideas. That's what Claire Buss does very nicely here. There are poems, a wittily constructed fake work module, a script, all capturing the beauty of mundanity, the delightful decay of British seaside life.
Pop down to any seaside town and you can see the characters from this book, picking their way delicately to the water then scampering back, their boldness vanquished by the chill of the water, or bickering about holiday destinations, or complaining about needing to go to the toilet. It's a slice of life, perfectly captured.
I particularly liked Maud and the Runner, a story of people watching growing into friendship. Claire also includes the opening chapters of two of her novels to give a glimpse of her longer work.
What I enjoy here is the subtlety, the gentle recreation of our own world, all while holding it up as perhaps something ridiculous, perhaps something essential.
It's a short read - and charming throughout its length.
Great Tales! Great Audible Listen🎧 Fun & Delightful!
Tales from the Seaside By: Claire Buss Narrated by: Helena Little
Claire Buss does it again, she pens another great collection of short stories that are just as enjoyable and entertaining as the ones from Suburbia. These are as interesting and creative, I love how she started them off with “WK101 Writing With Kids - Summer School Module” which is just hilarious. Also love how she ended it, so poetically, so real and so beautifully said in “Pick Up Your Plastic”. This collection is just a delight, one you can enjoy all at once or a few at a time. They are the type of stories you can revisit and enjoy all over again, they make you laugh and are thought provoking. Claire Buss, thank you for another great collection, if possible I think I loved these even more!
I listened to the Audible edition, Helena Little continues to deliver a great performance. She sets a great tone for each story, adds the right amount of humor and/or drama in all the right places which enhances the story and your listening pleasure. Thanks for another great & entertaining listen🎧
I really enjoyed this collection of short stories - one of which stands far and above the rest for me, and it actually had me in tears at the end. I did expect a more overt seaside theme to this collection, although I grew up in a seaside town and honestly, the fact you're growing up in a seaside town is not something you think about much. A lot of the stories are about motherhood and offer some poignant insights into what it's like to be run ragged with young children. A minor grumble: the stories end at 74%, and while it's not a lot of end matter, it is relative to the length of this collection.
All in all, a great read, and yes - as the blurb says - perfect for an afternoon by the seaside. In a deckchair, ideally, with an ice cream in t'other hand.
I must say, I don't recall the last time I saw the word "pootling' used in it's proper vernacular. Too funny... Another wonderful collection of short stories from an author I do quite enjoy even though this is only the second work of hers I have read. I do believe I shall immerse myself in some of her longer tales in the future as there are more than a few to choose from I now understand. I think my favorite in this collection was titled, 'No Time.' Even though I'm not a mother I could sympathize with the author having been a stay home parent myself for a time. A sarcastic and so very true account of the life of a mother for all intents and purposes. The poetry was amusing as well... Well worth a look.
I loved this book. Perfect bedtime reading but be warned, you will find yourself saying "Just one more." until the book is finished I found after reading one I would sink deeper into my sheets and feeling more content and wanting to find out what the next story would have in store for me. I have to say Maud and the Runner was my favourite. It was beautifully written and underplayed. Maud was so well written I found myself imagining her entire life even though you only have a glimpse at her golden years. I am a fan of the Author and can't wait to see what else she has in store for us next.
Enjoyable and refreshing in its variety and depth.
Excursions to the beach. Excursions on a bus. Excursions of the imagination. All complex. All expressive and thought-provoking. Each one will take you somewhere different.
Some of these pieces are fictional, others are more observant reflections on the author’s own experiences. Readers will find them all quite relatable and realistic in their portrayal of the lives of ordinary people. Subtly embedded beneath the surface of many of these stories is a layer of quite incisive social commentary that turns the lens back on the society in which we live. The stories are long enough to explore an interesting idea, and short enough to fit comfortably into a break in a busy day or enrich an evening before bed.
