I believe May Sage can do no wrong. After reading her Strands of Starfire series, I wanted to try her fantasy one and she, once again, exceeded my expectations. I have read both books, Song of Night and Song of Winter back to back so this review will encompass both.
Vale and Devi's story is divided in three novels but it's basically one book called Frostbound Throne, divided in three parts. I fucking loved these books. Proof is, I couldn't stop reading after Song of Night and had to immediately buy and start Song of Winter.
Think ACOTAR + Lords of the Rings with faes, elves, dragons, orcs and magic. Phenomenal. With her signature writing style, May Sage wrote an epic story set in a magical realm where deceits is key, secrets abound and war is brewing.
I absolutely loved the characters. All of them. Vale, our hero, is powerful, dark and moody and to die for. Devi, our heroine, may be even more powerful, sassy, loyal and smart. Together they formed the perfect pair and May Sage developed their relationship in a way that felt real. They were acquaintances first, attracted to each other but simple basic needs and never acted on it, then they became friends, close friends and learned to truly trust each other and then came the realization that it was more than friendship and basic sexual attraction.
I loved getting to see them understand their feelings, even if it was a little frustrating at times. I may have screamed at my kindle a time or two. But, above all, I loved their friendship and their easy banter, it made for an even more enjoyable story.
Speaking of, the story itself is amazing. Full of intrigues and twists with great and well developed characters, I was never bored, only wanting more as each chapter came to an end. May Sage wrote a very evocative story, it pulled me in and my head is still spinning from all the goodness.
As I've mentioned, I loved all the characters, not just the main ones. Vale's mother, Shea, was full of surprises and oddly endearing. Kallan, Vale's best friend, loyal to a fault and as impossible as his friend, I really liked him. All the others who were slowly introduced to us throughout the book, but I can't speak of them all because I don't want to spoil anyone. Some of them really took me by surprise and brought an interesting addition to the story.
I am beyond ready and excited for the final part, Song of Winter does end on a cliffhanger but it's a good one and makes the wait bearable.

Underwhelmed with this installment. Second books are terribly hard to write, I imagine, and this one fell victim to that blasé grey area: the plot has to move forward yet you don’t get that satisfying conclusion. It’s just...middle earth. Or Kansas.
Anyways, we didn’t get much chance to observe Vale and Devi’s banter. There was little humor and to be honest, not much to grasp on to, relationally. Before we knew it, there was action, action, action and then we were in the heads of other characters (...a lot), and then Vale had a life-altering (perhaps off the page?) conclusion about his relationship to Devi. Then it was over.
Yeah, there was some sex. But that was pretty poorly written. And fast. And really, really unsatisfying as a reader. You have FAE and an ELF and SUPER powers (hello, mind power?!?) and wings and fae ears...these people are having quick, missionary sex? Why why why didn’t the author draw out (for intensity) all the little touches, massages, sleeping together (just sleeping) throughout the book...I wanted ALL the tension and build up and there was just none.
I’ll still read the third book...I think. But i was disappointed on multiple fronts, perhaps mostly with Rook. Again, another one dimensional villain. We are meant to feel sorry for him, but we don’t know him well enough to do so. This book felt rush and too short. Not enough attention paid to characters’ relationships and plot development for this to adequately address the sweeping narrative that’s attempted.

I thought this was a pretty great 2nd book, even better than the first. Granted, I think that maybe there's just too much power being thrown around, so much so that every obstacle faced is easily overcome. In the past, that has bothered me. I think magic should be earned and should come at a cost, but in this case, weirdly enough, I'm mostly okay with it. I think it may be because I appreciate the brevity of the novels and the pacing of the story line. The author gets done what needs to be done on 300 pages or less. At this point in time, that works for me. Now on to Book 3!

This is as good as the first, another solid 4.25.
Great,fabtasy light World building, good pacing, good side characters, two main characters with great chemistry and watching the writer take time to build their relationship makes a great balance between the plot and romance.
Definitely recommend.

Not as good as the first, but still excited to see the end of the trilogy. Unlike the first, this book followed predictable patterns and tropes. Nothing felt "new" but I am interested in the end and how the final battle will play out.

Love it!
I Love this story. The characters and plot are evolving at a nice rate. The story itself is upbeat and moves along smoothly.

Better sequel
I would give this book 3.5 Stars. It was much better than the first book, less profanity that seemed random and I enjoyed all the characters we meet this book. The reason I didn't give it four stars was mainly because the ending was rather abrupt and we never found out why a huge twist happened and how it was possible. It may be addressed in the third book but that seems totally unnecessary.

4 stars for this sequel.
Still as good as the first and picks up right where the first one left off. You get more background in our characters. I love that we got a glimpse of POVs from other supporting cast as well. Hangs ups for me is the mixture of language. But that’s more of a personal thing. If we’re doing “come forths and yonder” I just expect that throughout the book but that’s just me. Other than that very exciting for the next and final installment!

Excellent, read the first one if you haven’t already. Loved this excellent worlds and love that instead of happening in alternate earth this is a weird dystopian future. Read it, and it’s been edited so no obvious grammar mistakes. Plus, it’s told in third person.

Was this written in haste?
The parts that were supposed to be climactic were delivered with all the passion of unsubscribing to SPAM emails. Gah! And here I really enjoyed Court of Sin, Book One.

I actually thoroughly enjoyed this book.
In comparison to the first Frostbound Throne novel, Song of Winter (Court of Sin #2) had amazing pacing, sophisticated character development, and a plot full of surprise twists. I appreciated that Song of Winter's prose did not make use of profanity unnecessarily (unlike its predecessor) but rather used it to elevate and distinguish this story as adult fiction rather than a young adult novel. The slow-burn romance was very well done and felt like it was truly developed rather than being insta-love like a lot of book romances tend to be. Devi is an AMAZING female protagonist who also isn't reduced down to just some clumsy girl who falls in love. And, not to applaud a fish for swimming but...I found it refreshing that Vale truly treated Devi as an equal—instead of him "LETTING" her make decisions, she TOLD him her decisions and he respected them. I had so many questions left at the end, which I am sure will be answered in book 3 (I've noticed May Sage has basically NO plot holes and I very much admire that). All in all, this sequel novel was a MAJOR step up from Song of Night (Court of Sin #1).

So, in the first book I was kind of waiting for things to take off, there was a lot of backstory and explanation required, but in this book we we're finally moving forward. I love relationship and banter that Devi and Vale have, it's one of the best I have read. I love foreshadowing in books and while I guessed Rook's involvement back in the first book, I wish Devi's reaction would have been a bit more heartbreaking I guess.I mean he was her friend for years, I assumed she would have been more upset and empathetic towards his cause. I also didn't understand when she called the orcs creatures and was against them coming into the realm. It just seemed like something she would have understood and agreed with. Dang that ending! I love how Devi kicked ass, when Vale was shot with the arrows. Best part hands down.

this read will suck you in! It starts with events that left me with a desire to devour the whole read in an hour (the fastest the better).
The plot in this book is tangled so read it carefully as every word matters here. A lot of things are coming to the light, some are completed, but most of them will begin new things that are going to develop in this book and the next.

2.75 stars. What started out as a strong story with intriguing characters and good world building, eventually devolved to a story that I had to force myself to finish, with a fair amount of skimming in the last 25%. Really once the author attempted to explain away the world of fae and elves that we were immersed in to having once been humans that were turned into ZOMBIES, and then experimented on by mother freaking ALIENS... I mean, it just all went to hell; she totally lost my initial buy-in. The story lacked refinement, and all of the obstacles that the h and H encountered were so easily overcome that I questioned why it was even worth the author mentioning. A true disappointment; it had so much potential.

Another book in the series that I wish was 200 pages longer. I think I’m uselessly comparing these books to the laborious long and drawn out high fantasy books I’ve been reading. Still, very enjoyable, checks all my boxes. This was more of a filler, the journey before the big battle, type of book but there was more delicious lore and info dumps that I didn’t really mind. The last few chapters, again I wish were longer since they held the bulk of the action, but gripping enough to make me want to read the last book. The villian- well they could use some work, particularly since we met them once (1) + a weird out-of-body pov that seemed kind of random. I’m assuming there will be more about them in the last book, but even though they are supposedly orchestrating everything the seem- awkward.

Book two was perfectly written. It seamlessly blends in with the first book without missing a beat. This series was perfect to begin with but just got even better in book two. You should really read book one before this one. It is not a standalone. You need the moments you get from book one to truly understand book two. Book two also ends on a cliffhanger, if you ask me it was not so bad that i can’t wait for the last book in the series. Now if i am asked if i want to wait that’s a totally different answer.

Waiting impatiently for the next book
This is my first series of May Sage's. I love the world building. The characters are much more dimensional and interesting. I love that the women are strong, but are still women. Not written as men. Allowed to have moments of weakness and be rescued and romanced.
I am totally shipping Kira and Kallan. I would love to see more dimension to their characters as well as a lot of fun adventures. They are a lot less encumbered by responsibility.
I am looking forward to the next book in the series which shouldn't be too long in coming. If it's anything like the others, I won't be able to put it down.

Omg this series is Apollo good!
I need the third book like right NOW! I have BLASTED through the first two books in the last two days. I really like that they aren't really long books. I have read many "similar" series recently and hate that they drag on and on, but May does a fabulous job of storytelling and providing all necessary information in a delightful way without droning on and making me want to quit reading. The characters are fabulous and since I cuss like a sailor, I find the dialogue right up my alley.😂 These are the first books I have read by this author but I am now a devoted fan and will definitely have to check out her other books.

Eagerly awaiting the next book
This series is turning out to be one of my favorites. The hero and heroine are the definition of a power couple in more ways than one. I was happy that a lot of my questions were answered in this book and she included just enough information about the past of both characters to keep me interested. I can't wait to read the conclusion of Vale and Devi's adventure, but I am also eager to experience more of this universe in future books. Hopefully, the red headed elf with the fiery temper will get her own story as well.

Needs a better editor
I really like this storyline; it is a novel take on dystopian and fantasy genres. However, the spelling, grammatical and typographical errors in this book were extremely distracting. Seriously, you know there are problems when the one the main character’s name is misspelled. Unfortunately, I have gotten accustomed to poor grammar in today’s writing, but this was extreme. Were there any beta readers? Where was the editor? I know I will continue this series because I find it interesting but PLEASE, find a proofreader!

So much has happened!! I can’t wait for book 3! But in this book we get answers to some of the questions that have been plaguing us, we get to see all the villains revealed, our heroes fail, triumph and live to fight for a brighter future that still isn’t guaranteed, and we see more of the BA Fae Queen who isn’t to be trifled with, the secondary characters even get romance and expanded roles, the writing is superb, our main characters grow and expand. Check it out for yourself!

A quick entertaining read
This is the first series I have read for this author. The MC were well created and matched. The world building is done well and the story line kept me interested enough to want to read more in the series. I would def try it out if you are looking for an easy entertaining story. Things that I struggled with - the ending isn’t really an ending since it feels like the equivalent of a commercial break. I don’t mean a cliff hanger, but more like... they were having a romp after practically dying and then boom that’s the end.

Wow... By far my favourite book series so far by May Sage
I'm a big fan of May sages books and this most definitely did not dissapoint. This book continues straight after the first where we were left with an intriguing cliff hanger and characters that make you want to find out even more about them. I can't wait for the next book and I'm so excited that it takes place in the same realm as some of May sages other books. Roll on book 3.

Started out loving the story's mystical fantasy setting, but for some reason the author felt a need to explain everything away. *SPOILER* The powerfully magical, almost god like beings are just aliens from space, their magic is actually advanced technology, and the powerful main characters are the result of a special genetic breeding program. The sudden shift from fantasy to sy-fy was just too jarring to finish.

Loved It
I read the first book today, then quickly bought the second book and stayed up until 4am finishing it. I’m very tried but also very happy and excited for book 3+. I can’t wait for the rest of the books. This will probably end up being one of my favorite series. (I’ve read Shannon Mayers series before and a lot of others I don’t have enough time to name) I love a good paranormal series. I wanna read the next book now...ugh I hope you enjoy it too.

I LOVEEEEE THIS SERIES!
I can’t say it in many words how much I love these series! I have forsaken sleep just to read both books! I loved Devi’s and Vale’s characters and the complexity of other characters as well! I love how Devi’s relationship with her family is unpredictable, well none of what happened was predictable to be honest and I loved it!

I can’t say it in many words how much I love these series! I have forsaken sleep just to read both books! I loved Devi’s and Vale’s characters and the complexity of other characters as well! I love how Devi’s relationship with her family is unpredictable, well none of what happened was predictable to be honest and I loved it!
