Man's Best Friend Rick, Tina and their new family members embark on a journey with Annette to Miami, Florida for a cruise where trouble was brewing. Once again, Rick, Tina, and their furry owners must use their preps and wits to survive the fury of more than a mere hurricane. With first Tina and then Owen going missing, Rick and his canines must race to find them before it's too late.
Rick and Tina Carpenter are in for another disastrous adventure. It seems no matter where they go trouble follows. With their 2-year-old son, fur babies, and friend Annette they take off to Florida for a cruise. Fate not only tests their bugout and prep skills but their will to survive.
Craven’s third novel in the One Man’s Opus series, Opus Adventure: A Survival and Preparedness Story is much different than most books in this genre. The German Shepherds have chapters where what they are thinking is played out. It is also about a local apocalyptic event that lasts mere days instead of years.
The two main characters have grown as their lives have changed and merged. They are fighting their personal demons and winning. The challenges that are thrown at them wreak havoc with their lives and threaten them with great harm and near death.
Unfortunately, the story buildup is too slow. I kept reading and reading waiting to see where it was heading. It also had too many possible mistakes. These two keep me from giving it 5 or even 4 stars.
Boyd Craven is a gifted writer, crafting books with characters, and dogs, that become real to me from page one. I don't just read his books, I devour them. This series will appeal to dog lovers, nature lovers, peppers and anyone who likes thrillers. It's not as dystopian apocalypse as his other books, although Boyd always manages to create situations that scream OMG! I have read a ton of his books, and will read anything he puts out, even if he writes paranormal romances. Read the book and you'll get why I said that. Enjoy!
This series has everything you want, great characters and not one but 3 dogs. It’s has a great plot and the story is a not to be put down til done sort of book, really each book can stand on its own but as a series it works because of the very like able characters that make you want to know more about them.
Thanks for this series, Boyd. I read it, then we listened to it on a 28 hour drive cross country, and I have the rest of my family reading it. I like how you blend in “real life” into your stories and characters. Keep the great stories coming!
I got your Easter egg but have already read that series so here’s hoping there is another series that you wrote that I haven’t read yet. I really like your style of writing.
Ok, it's so great full of action and how many ways to say everyone needs a dog to love. This book sucks you in and all you can do is keep reading. Hope the next book is as good.
Book one two and three in the series follow Opus a Shepard who guards his owner Tina before the arrival of a stranger. Read how he accepts and loves his family
This is really a great 3 book series with great characters including 3 furry faces Opus, Ophelia and Sarge. A story of friendship, family, honor, loyalty and lots and lots of love.
First and foremost: thank you to Boyd Craven for writing a book where Kevin Pierce, the voice of the apocalypse, has to talk… like a toddler. Seriously, this made the book for me. As unbelievable as it was, it was perfect to hear him try and do scenes of “Mamamamama” and “Dadadada”. I know they weren’t meant to be funny, but I hope a part of you wrote that knowing that Kevin was going to have to narrate it later.
I think this is one of those books where if you own a dog – you will absolutely love it. The main characters in it are three well trained German Shepard’s. Sure there are the human characters (husband Rick, wife Tina, and 2-year-old son) but we all know that these Opus books are about the dogs.
I have a dog who is a mix between a Shiba Inu and American Eskimo – while he doesn’t do all of the things that Opus, Ophelia, and Sarge do – he does some of them. And that made me like this book even more. He chuffs and answers me when I ask him questions. It’s pretty funny reading a book where the dogs do the same thing.
There were chapters where Craven would write the story from the Dogs point of view – and those were my absolute favorites. There would be lines like “the human that I’m babysitting” and “up like the sky and down like the ocean” when talking about going up vs down the stairs. Lots of these little lines were in the book but really made the characters likable and to anyone who owns a dog and wonders how they think, it was endearing for sure.
This is an extremely hard book to characterize because it wasn’t a Post-Apocalyptic story (at least as typical stories like this go). But it was more of a Thriller that contained a character who was a Prepper.
Overall, I thought that Opus Adventure was a great book that really warmed my heart. I’m sorry to hear about Craven’s loss at the end and I can imagine how hard writing a book like this would be after losing your best friend like that. You could tell that he added in some of the “feelings” that Opus was going through (being stiff, not feeling the way he used to, still feeling like a puppy) that were probably related to the aging and loss of his dog. It was extremely well done though.
I have read this series at least twice--the first time was the original reading of the 1st book the 2nd (and maybe 3rd) times were because I read so much in between the release of each one that I feel the need to re-read them to refresh my memory on each book. There's a chance I will read them again, they are that interesting and entertaining. The characters are likeable and situations are real-life, especially for these times we live in now... and who doesn't love smart as a whip dogs??? You might even learn something about prepping. I was sorry to see this series end so soon, but I'm already making my way through his newest series, Behind the Curve, and loving it as well! Having read the World Burns series years ago, I will be catching up on others that he's written, whether they are dystopian or not (time to branch out since I'm running out of Boyd's reading material, lol)
4/19/23 Third time around and it's still an awesome read; getting caught back up so I can read #4 in the series!
There are only a few series that I can think of that I would enjoy receiving short story (or full length) updates on for an undetermined amount of time. The characters and or storylines have a way of sticking it makes me want to stay connected. This happens to be one and I'm really going to miss this family, fur babies included. In case you missed the Easter egg at the end regarding Wes and his moonshining in Arkansas, don't sleep on it cause it's more good reading.
I reviewed this book yesterday but my review didn't show up! As usual Mr. CRAVEN delivers and awesome story with great character development and action. This is true of all of his books - no matter the genre. I always look for his books on Amazon!
Boyd Craven hammered out another winner with his latest book Opus Adventure: A Survival and Preparedness Story (One Man's Opus Book 3) by Boyd Craven III The story favors the Canine portion of the families viewpoint. Plenty of action and adventure in this one. Enjoy it, I did.
This series is so different from the normal post apocalypse books I read. It is so much more real. The main character still has more money than most but he does start out with a lower paying career he just gets good at it. Throughly enjoyed the stories.
As I was reading the previous books in this series, it occurred to me that we should get a point of view from Opus and the other dogs. The author delivered! Great story - hope there are more to come!
The third book in the series is as good, if not better than the first two. If you love a good story, love action, and especially love dogs, you have to read this book!
What a really great ending for this three book series. Such interesting dogs ! Mr. Craven is one of my favorite authors and a magnificent wordcrafter. I highly recommend this set of books to everyone !
I want to get a Shepard or two now that I have more room but I have a viscous attack Chihuahua for now lol. I think most families should raise their kids with a good dog or two. Keep writing, I'll keep reading!
Once again Boyd has been able to tell an amazing story of the unconditional love of his "pack"! This book is ow families with dogs interact. Another exciting excellent read.
I enjoyed the series even though it wasn't what I thought I was getting in a story. I really loved the dogs. I have my own fur baby and can't imagine life without her or want to.
Love, love, love this book and the entire series! Very tight pacing and plot that will suck you in and keep you there. Boyd has yet another great book for us transcend I hope he keeps them coming. You gotta read this series!
Once again Craven takes you on a wild ride. I laughed, and cried a little too. There were some tense moments, but all in all? It was an exciting and fun read!
