They say that time heals all wounds. For Kisa, however, the more time that passes, the more of herself she begins to lose. Grief has made her a shell of her former self; eating away at every feeling and driving her slowly to the brink of madness. No matter how desperately she tries to feel something, nothing gets through. For millennia Dolor has walked the world, watching humanity evolve and devolve before him. After all this time, he has grown content where he is. With true friends at his side, he's created a profitable establishment; a BDSM club for the supernatural. Being one of the most powerful beings in creation has its perks, and he wants for nothing. Until Kisa... It's pain that brings them together. Something she needs to feel, and something he needs to exist. What they don't know, is what's about to be unleashed. Will Kisa put her life in Dolor's hands? Can Dolor teach Kisa to dance in her darkness, or will her pain consume them both?

Amazing first book for this new author! I really enjoyed this read, it was written beautifully. The book sucks you into this new world filled with great characters and keeps you impatiently waiting for the next book. Looking forward to learning more about the FMC and MC, also the side characters. Great job introducing us readers into the wonderful new world you've developed.

I would give it 6 stars if I could.
I'll try to describe how much I loved the book. Let me start by saying that I read it in one go without a break. The plot is great and original, the author's writing style is superb and consistent, character development and world building are amazing, not to mention the creatures and ideas. There are so many layers to the story and the characters, and I can't even go into them without giving spoilers, so just trust me on this.
A lot gets answered towards the end but keep in mind that this is only the first book in a trilogy and not a standalone, and there is a lot left to be revealed and answered later. But some of the things that do come to light are quite unexpected and incredibly well thought of.
There are numerous great characters in this book, I can't even list them all, but good or bad or in between, all the characters are great, well developed and well placed in the story. I will, of course, mention Kisa and Dolor, and their amazing connection. Wow, what a connection, not to mention sizzling hot scenes, and the way the author managed to portray and convey the pain and sadness, and the complete lethargy left in their wake. The story made me feel so much of the characters' emotions, that I found tears running down my face at times. Amazing.
I cannot recommend this book enough, however, please stay away from it if you have issues with alternative expressions of sexuality, as some of the scenes are quite explicit.
I cannot love this book more, and I will be re-reading it (which is not my normal practice, but I love this book so much) before the next one comes out, possibly in December 2018, if we are lucky.
************************
So, as promised, I am re-reading this amazing book, and I am amazed how many more details come to forefront, details I haven’t noticed the first time. I have to emphasise that the prologue of this book is one of the most interesting, most powerful prologues have ever read. Something similarly powerful occurs somewhere in the second book.
Here is a beautiful quote that caught my attention. Dolor’s monologue, just before he senses Kisa:
“Reaching up and running his fingers through his thick hair, Dolor sighed. Shallow, their pain was shallow and unexciting. These humans created this pain with their mediocrity, their pathetic existences continuing throughout the cycles of meaningless sex, alcohol, and soulless careers. They loved material objects and then despaired when the love of another being eluded them. They were pawns, and they hadn’t desire to become kings. Satisfied in their dissatisfaction, they merely… existed.”
This author pretty much ticks all the boxes. Her books are pure perfection, gripping, great ideas, steamy sexy, pushing limits, speaking truth, diversity, original, fresh, extremely well written, characters well developed, and interesting world built. She writes in a clear and loud voice, and conveys all kinds of beautiful messages.
This book, and I am assuming the rest of the Trilogy gives hope to the brokenhearted, sets out a manual for BDSM beginners, and explains the healing properties of controlled physical pain inflicted with love and care.

SLIVERED by Kandi Vale
A Dark Paranormal Romance.
Review by Kristy Gilbert
"Just a taste, Kisa. Play with me. Let me show you how to feel." His words touched something deep inside of her. To feel. She so desperately wanted to feel.
That is a snippet from Kandi Vale's breakout novel, Slivered. This is the first book in The Slivered Souls Trilogy and I already am counting the days until the next one. This novel was engrossing and flows in such a way you are done with the book before you realize it. I guarantee you will be wanting more. Something's always happening, it is a true page turner. Kandi Vale’s settings are easy to visualize, and some areas even make you wish you could stay and explore. The characters in Slivered were not a cliched product of their circumstances and that was truly refreshing. Kisa and Dolor the main characters are entertaining, sexy, and incredibly relatable, they are also backed with an amazing crew of secondary characters. This was also a great "warm up" for anyone who isn't familiar to the BDSM culture, and you can tell it's only going to get worse/better. Kandi Vale understands pain for pleasure as well as the soul shattering agoney you can get from just living life and she blends it beautifly.
The protagonist, Kisa is successfully functioning, despite how difficult her life has been. Her masks however are becoming more difficult to keep on. Dolor is loving his life right now hundreds of years worth of work is coming together nicely. he didn't need a distraction but he found Kisa's pain a delectable delicacy he couldn't ignore. As he knocks down her walls, he is discovering she is more than a meal. Meanwhile outside of all the internal conflicts, the supernatural world closing in on Kisa. They know she is different, powerful and vulnerable, they will do anything to possess or destroy her. One thing they don't know, however is Kisa is full of surprizes and has more back up than even she knew.
I have become an instant fan girl, and I found myself doing something I rarely do with a book, immediately rereading it! . Attachment to the characters happens almost instantly and on a personal level. With strong topics like death, addictions, and anxiety, I surprisingly found myself laughing with the various characters more than feeling sorry for them. There is a organized chao to this novel that will keep you enraptured. Kandi Vale is frustratingly, spectacular and has truly created something sensational. I wouldn't be surprised if her books quickly became synonymous with Karen Moning, Laurell K.Hamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon. Slivered is the kind of book you only put down for emergencies and just maybe for your children.
Slivered is available August 1st on the Kindle for 2.99 and it's free for the Kindle Unlimited members. It will be available in paperback soon, you can follow Kandi Vale via her author page or The Kandi Shop they are both found on Facebook.(The link to her author page available below.) She is very active with her fans and it's a good way to get a heads up on book two. You will want that immediately after finishing book one! Kandi Vale has created a new universe with Slivered that anyone into the dark paranormal romance genre will love to explore.

Wow! This book is SO GOOD! I don’t even know if I have the words to give it a proper review, but I am going to try! First I will mention that this book has some mature content in the form of sexual situations, so if you do not like reading books with this kind of content, then this book may not be for you. Now moving past that, the storyline of this book is well thought out, and the characters are well developed. This book is in the Paranormal Romance category, but also has some action, drama, and even some comedy, depending on what kind of sense of humor you have! There are times while reading this book that I thought I knew what was coming next, but the author had other plans! Once you start reading this book you will NOT want to put it down! Once you are finished reading this book you will be a little sad that it is over, but then you will remember that it is a Trilogy! You have two more books to read before it is truly over! The writing is consistent. The plot takes a few unexpected, but intriguing turns. All that I have left to say is, I cannot wait for the next installment of this story, and GO GET A COPY OF THIS BOOK, PEOPLE!!!!!! You won’t regret it!

I'm devastated.

It's over. I got to the last page. I didn't want it to end!

I know it's only temporary but I got sucked in, swirled around like a fine glass of wine, and then abandoned as I let myself go to the experience.

I need more Kisa. I crave more Dolor. I really want that bookshop experience.

Thank you Kandi Vale for the opportunity to slip in, roll around, and immerse myself in Slivered. Can't wait for book 2.

I love love love the book. The author’s imagination is magnificent. How she pulled all those elements of friendship / team spirit / drug abuse / PTSD / soul mates and NEW mythical creatures into a fabulous page turner of a story is just WOW!

In addition to the above add mystery, a tad of kink, a splash of romance AND a bookstore.

I love the whole thing and cannot wait to see more of Kisa & Dolor with Mattheus in books two and three (and the Vicious Valkyries!!!!).

Just finished this lovely book. I was captivated by the storyline and the characters kept me engaged. My go-to genre of books is paranormal romance, which this book is. However, Slivered to me was like a breath of fresh air. The book was different than the vampire based books that I normally read. I really enjoyed this book. I would sincerely recommend that others give this book a read. I can't wait for the next book.

I'm not sure how to review this book without giving away spoilers. I'm going to try and do my best.

Dolor has lived his life surrounded by fear and pain. A life he knows well and has turned into a BDSM club. Perfect for him. When he see's a woman on the cross he watches her reaction, there is none. Until he gets a hold of her. There is something about her, something that isn't quite right. Is she that broken that she needs to feel this pain to survive, like him? Or is there something else going on with this beautiful human?

Fear and pain rule Kisa's life. There's some guilt too. Her only sanctuary is her roller derby team, who rally around her. Running on empty she meets Dolor who breaks down her walls and lets her fly. She unprepared for everything he has to offer her and wants to offer her. Some of these things are a hard pass. And just as things start looking up, things change and the floor drops out again. This can't be happening? Oh but it is.....

I enjoyed this book and for the most part I held my breath reading it. I was intrigued by the world being built, Dolor's story, Kisa's story. What I would have liked more of was Restless's story about being a safe haven. Maybe in book #2 when things settle down. It is a good read and will keep you hooked to the story. I wanted more and was not ready for this book to end.

The battle of good and evil is timeless. Every day people struggle with making the right decision. Dolor was created with goodness in mind, however no one took into consideration the toll his career would take on his soul. Kisa was living her life with her one true love when an accident occurred that left her hollow.

Slivered is a paranormal book unlike any other paranormal book I’ve read. Yes there are shape shifters, but it’s demons and angels, shadows and lights and pain and healing. Kandi Vale just makes everything work. This is a story about friends, love, healing and life.

Slivered is paranormal with BDSM. I HIGHLY recommend this book!!! Your mind will be blown away and you will be impatiently waiting for book 2 the same as I am.

Kandi Vale has lead out with a stunning piece of work for her first series! Beautifully written characters to keep you company, an intriguing new supernatural world to tickle your imagination, new creatures to add to your lore collection, and an accurate portrayal of the BDSM scene- without bogging up the storyline with any 'just sex' scenes. Every person, action, and moment was important to me. A difficult balance to create, yes, but here it is! I never experienced a dull moment and was heartbroken when I ran out of chapters to read! I cannot wait for the second book to be released! Well done Kandi, well done!
So go ahead! Buy this novel, take some time off to read through it, and be prepared to be kept on the edge of your seat begging for more!

Ms. Vale has brought the world of Vampires to it's knees in this debut novel! I could not believe she is a new writer! Superb writing lead to Her setting the bar higher for other writers in the paranormal genre! Her use of words and amazing storytelling both captured and held my attention all the way through the emotional rollercoaster that is Slivered! Oh and what a story it is!! Fall in love with Dolor, and cheer on Kisa the entire way through the book! The book shop *sigh* is all I should have to say! Some questions were answered by the end, but there is much to learn in the rest of the trilogy! I can not wait for book two!!

There is something so refreshing about a book that can incorporate BDSM without being cringe worthy. Slivered drags you into a world of pain and fighting your inner demons, and leaves you wanting so much more! When I reached the last page I kept trying to flip to another page just hoping it wasn’t over. Dolor & Kisa make me just want so much more! I cannot wait to see how their troupe of misfits evolve in the next book.

Exhilarating, exquisite, sexy.... This rollercoaster rides you right on the brink of pain and pleasure. Had me biting my lip in excitement! She makes you feel the pain, the pleasure... I cried, laughed, and squirmed in delight. This hollow feeling, the book ending... Kandi leaves you craving for more. You would never guess this is her first book, perfection. She reels you in, not just any normal paranormal romance, take the bite and get ready for the ride of your lives!

This book was different than any other I have read and I'm not quite sure how to even write my review to describe how I feel about it, especially without spoilers, but I am going to try my best. The author takes time to lay the groundwork for the characters, and leaves little breadcrumbs about both the characters' pasts as well as what is coming in the future. I kept thinking I had things figured out but I really didn't, and by the end I was really impressed by the creativity of the paranormal world and what it means for the characters - I haven't read this scenario in any other paranormal book and I love that it is a unique experience for me. The book didn't really hook me, hook me until about a third of the way in (though I think this is at least partially because my reading kept getting interrupted by that pesky life stuff) but once it did I read the rest in one sitting, happily so. Dolor is one of my favorite kinds of heroes - he's growly and possessive and alpha male, ooh la la! Kisa is a very interesting and likeable heroine - I felt her pain and loss and the subtle strength she has dealing with all of the heartbreaking obstacles life has thrown her - her story is very moving. Dolor's best friend/business partner Mattheus is intriguing as well - I enjoyed every time he was on the page and hope to see more of him/his story too. As appropriate to their characters, the BDSM kink they explore is pain, and this was tastefully done and woven into the book well. It is also on the light side of the pain kink on the scale of what I have read, which I liked, and though the "burn" level is hard to classify (it's so subjective to the reader!) I really felt the burn level of this book was perfect for the characters and story. I wouldn't call the ending a cliffhanger, but it does end leaving you wanting more so I am looking forward to the next book to see how these two deal with the revelations at the end of this book, and of course to see their romance grow.
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

**Spoiler-free review**

Slivered was a wild, emotional ride through a well-crafted urban fantasy world.

I believe I will call this the anti-cliche' book! Kandi flipped the script on all the old tropes and whiny females and exchanged them for original characters that you will find yourself emotionally invested from the beginning. This novel is perfect paced so you will not find yourself bored and skimming through sections. Instead, you will be dropped into a fresh take on an urban fantasy world that is packed with action, mystery, intrigue, real-world problems, pain, and a real depiction of the BDSM lifestyle and mental illness.

Kisa and Dolors romance is unlike anything I have ever read, and anything but insta-love. Her hatred and curiosity towards him drives her into an unfamiliar world that is able to provide her with the emotional relief she has longed for most of her adult life. The sexy parts of the book are intense and smoking hot. They are a mix of raw, sensual pain and a burning desire for each other they are unable to deny.

Once you have finished this one, you will be craving the second book (and maybe some Swedish Fish).

This was a fantastic story! I loved the character buildup and the storyline was just fascinating. So many intricate details all put into one tiny package.

I just recently started getting back into paranormal story reading. This book is a whole new world and whole new spin for me. However I love all the elements the author threw in to keep it interesting. Kept me guessing and wanting to know more. Not to mention the build up of a relationship between the 2 main characters. Can't wait to see what happens next in this trilogy!

Blown away! This book grabbed my attention from the very first page and I could. Not. Put. It. Down! For a debut novel, Kandi’s work is amazingly polished and intricately detailed. She builds a complex world that sucks you in and doesn’t let you go until the very last word of the very last page. Dolor and Kisa are deep, fully dimensional people that grab you by the heartstrings (and lower things) that very quickly became real to me. The secondary characters are also interesting and it’s clear they have stories of their own that I hope we get to read about someday. I have to say, I don’t usually gush this much, especially over a first novel, but this one just won’t let go. I have a very short list of authors whose books I’ll buy sight unseen, no questions asked. That list just got a little longer with the addition of Kandi. If you like hot, dominant monster men with strong take no prisoner women, then do not pass this book up. It’s definitely worth the read.

I loved this book!

From the first page you can tell that Kandi is creating a world that is her own. It wasn't so different that I got lost (in a bad way), but it was unique from the start. It was new and familiar at the same time.

Kisa was instantly relatable. Her pain, her isolation, her struggles. Dolor is totally alpha male, but in a real way; not in a "I love him in the book but would hate him in real life" kind of way. He's dominant but not domineering.

This book does somewhat center around BDSM and I can say that either Kandi is in the lifestyle or she really did her homework (unlike some authors). The scenes are realistic and Kandi does a great job writing a scene between someone experienced and non-experienced.

I can't wait until the next book, and the next one.

4/5 - this is a solid debut book
-
-
-
This book is about Kisa and Dolor. Both in the pain business but on different ends of the spectrum. Dolor is a sadist dominant and Kisa is a masochist submissive. It’s a good ship. Dolor is a good Dom. He’s fair and takes care of Kisa after all scenes. No angst or triangle. It’s not exactly insta-love or a slow burn, it’s just a good pace.

Bullets about the story:

BDSM Club
There is play: flogging, spanking, caning, nipple clamps
Subspace and subdrop are discussed and aftercare
Pain-eater
Soul-eater
Loss of love
Lots of sexual teasing
No sex, penetration - like ZERO!

C L I F F H A N G E R

I’m needing book 2 now. I have questions that need answers!!

Yes I recommend this book.
