It’s the bottom of the 9th. Bases are loaded. Your favorite player is up to bat. He swings. He hits. It’s a…..grand slam! It’s true, fans love a good game. And we love players that inspire us. But who inspires the players? Who do they look to for guidance? Dugout Devotions takes an inside look at several popular Major League Baseball players and their successes both on and off the diamond. Recounting personal stories about their walk with Jesus Christ, these superstars serve God and provide a great counterbalance to the negative stories about athletes. Through these daily devotions, these players will inspire you once more but this time it will be you in the batter’s box. Get ready to knock the curveball out of the park for the grand slam in your spiritual life.
An avid sports fan for many years and supporter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Dugout Devotions touches all the bases and hits a grand slam with this reader. I especially enjoyed how the author and his colleagues were able to show our modern-day sports heroes as real people, dealing with real issues, in the real world outside of the stardom of baseball. This book is a “Must Read” for every Christian baseball fan in the world. Great job Mr. Del Duduit. This book is worth reading twice!
Dugout Devotions by Del Duduit was an interesting book that I really enjoyed. The book was full of behind the scenes to MLB players, coaches, and scouts on and off the field spiritual life and discussing challenges that they faced and how God has helped them overcome those challenges. I enjoyed reading the problems the players faced the most and how their faith helped them stick with it in the hard times. At the end of each chapter, there are specific passages you can study and how you can apply them. This book showed big problems some of the biggest names on the diamond faced and how the challenges knocked them down but their faith in God remained. I really enjoyed reading it and would recommend it to other Christian athletes because all athletes will struggle at some point, so this doesn't just apply to baseball players. This book was intended for athletes that follow God and I think it succeeded because it showed how pro athletes have used their faith to get over problems they faced.
I love God and I love baseball so this was a great devotional for me. I am also currently going through a tough time in my life and God was talking to me through these devotionals. This book includes devotionals setting out what players, managers, scouts, coaches etc. go through in their lives in baseball and how God is a big part of it. I then sets out how to deal with the issue in 10 or more constructive ways. There are only 30 of these-wish there were more. I was shocked to learn of some of the players I didn't particularly care for are Christian. I will look at them differently now.
This is a fantastic read for sports fans. The author capitalizes on years of being a sports writer to provide life lessons from some of MLB's greats. Dugout Devotions includes many ballplayers and coaches giving powerful witness to God's faithfulness. There's lots of Scriptures and a chance for readers to Step Up to the Plate and apply the Word of the day. Highly recommend for ball fans and as a gift for the baseball lover in your life.
It's kind of dry for inspirational stories ~ maybe because it includes details for readers less informed about the details of baseball players/coaches/etc lives? It's also kind of more like a call to Christ that happens to use baseball stars as examples rather than a revealing of religion's role in baseball or an illustration of Christ's influence in these athlete's lives. I'd recommend it more for use as a workbook for someone who wants to be a better Christian (and likes baseball).
