Sebastian only wanted one thing in life. A nice safe profession that let him stay behind the town's walls. His mother had other ideas, however. She insisted that he follow in his father's footsteps and become the town's greatest hunter, and as such she refused any and all apprenticeships he tried to secure. Sebastian's one solitary hope was that he possessed magic, and would be accepted into the Mage's Guild as a novice. Sometimes life gives you what you wish for, but in a way you never saw coming.
I love this book, all the characters were funny, real and quite humorous. The author knew where he is going with the story and I avoided too many plot holes. The whole story is mostly first person and I really appreciate that.
Sebastian as an a MC is really good MC and is quite a genius.
Reading this book is like listening to an excited 10 year old that barely takes time to breath. Every single piece of dialog in this book is just a mash of incoherent ideas thrown together and showed out in a torrent.
As in the author's inability to use punctuation properly and you have a book that is a chore to read.
Lastly, this is yet another author that wants to draw out a story that should be told in a single book into a series. Nothing is resolved in this book. The ending is just a stop off in the story.
The author switches between past tense and present tense and back multiple times in the same sentence.
Lastly, the worst part of this book is the author's insistence on using the word "anyways". 43 times the author used this word. It was used improperly every time.
Was a very nice story, but it needs an editor and to be longer. I enjoyed the story and the writing. There was enough action, and the characters were good.
But the book just felt short. It could easily be doubled and not felt too long. More details would have made me better connect to the characters. The magic system I don't think is thought out too well, but at least the characters themselves admit that the MC is weird and doing weird things.
This is a post apocalyptic novel, where it sounds like magic came to Earth and twisted the land and peoples and creatures. Not too much is explained, but it does sound interesting. The society that grew from the apocalypse seems rather simple and I hope that in the next novel the author will do a good job flushing out the politics.
This is a simple fantasy story about a simple boy, from a small town, who didn't know he had magic, who finds he has skills, and finds he has a girlfriend, and tries to become useful, and surprises everyone. It is both directly and indirectly derivative of LOTR and many others. Still, I found it enjoyable. The writing is competent. The characters are little more than two dimensional, but are generally likeable. The plot has enough action, but not too much. Its a good way to spend a lazy afternoon.
The beginning was a bit rocky and abrupt and the MC ‘s evolution seemed too rushed. I enjoy the whole of it but it seems that a lot of material was left out of the book. I am looking forward to the next novel but I am hoping to read more of the backbone concepts and like I said it seems as though potentially large portions were left out.
Pretty much for children and young teenagers. It was lightweight, and much of the reasoning and explaining of the magic used in the book was "What did he just say? What? That makes no sense" to me. The young mage in the book was way too quick and getting from "no magic" to "the most amazing mage". I should have stopped reading it early on. When there was about an hour left in the book, I kept falling asleep. That should tell you something. It took me forever to get past the last 30 minutes of the book.
Not a bad start to a series. Somewhat predictable, but I enjoyed it all the same. So if you’re looking for a Game of Thrones type saga, this isn’t it. If you want to be entertained, then this book should do the it. Looking forward to the next one. I hope we have a bit more character development next time.
This story was a good start and was thoughtfully written. It is a bit abrupt in areas with repetitive wording, but a good start nonetheless. Characters could also use a little enriching, and stronger descriptive world-building. More thorough editing will assist in less detraction from a smoother read.
Start of a new post apocalyptic series with magic... And crafting. Yay. Set far in future of some tech downfall magic is a thing. Our MC is a mage. An enchanter specifically. This is his noble beginnings. I enjoyed this story. Escalated quick near the end but a fun read. I eagerly await the sequel
It’s been a while since a fantasy book has made me laugh, but this (mostly) lighthearted tale did just that. While there are some odd fast forwards it all bodes well for the developing story and I could barely put it down.. cannot wait to see what happens next.
The writing in this book was fantastic, the humor wasn't forced and felt very natural and all the characters had brilliant personalities. I cannot wait to continue Sebastián's story.
Enjoyable main character and supporting characters with a nice blend of humor and action. There is a hint of romance and it is nice to see that handled without the drama and angst which makes you wonder if the interested parties are brain dead idiots.
Good story I normally don't do reviews as I have being told how many words and letters To do the job. That being said this was a wonderful story so if you a sci-fi fantasy person this is great one to peruse eagerly be awaiting the next book(s)?
I quickly read this book. The story flowed seamlessly, and was very enjoyable. I can't wait to read what happens next for Sebastian and Sarah. Keep up the good work!
I really enjoyed reading this, it was fun! Entertaining and fluid writing is what I found here. I also liked how it referenced to the past as if it were something like things are now. Really cool! Read this!
This is one hell of a series starter. Sebastian is an amazing character and I really enjoyed seeing him change as his magic grew. The world building is top notch and it really drew me in. I am so looking forward to reading more in this series.
A good book and a fun read! Liked the characters especially the mc. Liked the magic what it could do and the connection to science. Looks to be a good series!
I truly enjoyed this book. I really appreciated the writing style as it held my interest from beginning to end, without skipping any big the middle like I usually do
A charming first entry to a new fantasy series. Although the Sebastian character suffers a bit from Mary Sue-ism (he's phenomenal at almost everything he does, the second he tries it), there are hints that he'll be paying the price for his success in the future.
Aside from that, the world-building is very good, the characters are interesting, and the plot is developing in some very interesting ways. Definitely give this one a try. It's on the light side, possibly even YA, but a good read.
