In the edges of the Earth every decision can signify life or death. Lieutenant Jasper Hobson and a detachment of soldiers undertake a journey to the northernmost parts of the world to establish a new fur factory where hunting is still plentiful. The intrepid Pauline Barnett joins just for the adventure and the experience of living in the most north latitudes of the earth. Astronomer Thomas Black tags along to observe an astronomical phenomenon of great worldwide importance. The inclement weather of a hostile land, the freezing mortal cold and other unknown dangers will test their resolve to the extreme.

An incredible journey to northern Canada, nearing the arctic ocean, where nature is displayed like a marvelous wonder as beautiful as deadly; with frozen terrains from horizon to horizon, icebergs as big as mountains, nights that last six months, and more. Forgetting the fact of the horrible hunting of innocent wildlife, leaving that aside, or at least trying to… an excellent classical adventure, with a very unexpected ending. None of the characters are very memorable, although the story is, even nearly a decade after reading it. You can always count on good old Verne to tell you a fantastic story in some remote forgotten place of the world.

It’s public domain. You can find it HERE.

Friolento.

In the far frigid north of Canada where the bitter cold encompasses the white environment of frozen ice, snow falling in blizzard winds, gigantic icebergs floating in the desolate Arctic Ocean, lonely Eskimos sheltered in igloos, ferocious Polar Bears roaming to find meat of any kind, temperatures not rising above- 20 degrees Fahrenheit, a small group of people walk and travel in dog sleds as their bones are chilled. Where are they going you may ask? In 1859 this is not unusual for the Hudson Bay Company that had a monopoly here, to establish a post for gathering animal furs which women then desired. Things happily are different now however customs were barbaric in the distant past, or maybe not. Let's get back to the novel after all this is a Jules Verne novel, and my 31st book of his I read, almost half of his career total he wrote...wow. The 19 Stalwarts both men and women building a fort on the shores of a sea near the North Pole are either foolish or fearless either way that can make you quite dead. These mostly acquaintances of virtual strangers become close friends, they need to be or else but... Lt. Jasper Hobson is the intrepid leader and at the 70th parallel north it is above the Arctic circle...brr. Greatly assisted by the indomitable Mrs.Barnett a rich, attractive widow, her loyal maid Madge, Sergeant Long the able Lieutenant's always stout subordinate and the last and least key member of the entourage the weakling astronomer Mr. Black who journeys to the inhospitable north to view an eclipse of the Moon and Sun. However big mistakes are made, land which isn't that, volcanoes erupt ice mountains tumble and the fort floats in a sea of ice while the brave becomes less so. The ice island slowly melts in salt water and the inhabitants fear the southerly course when the Sun rays reappears as the isle gets smaller every day, no conceivable escape, the freezing seas will kill. Disasters test the courageous and this is not one of Verne's better known works but should be. An excellent never less than absorbing account of survival when nothing can deter the daring. This novel is for anyone who seeks a pleasant (safe ) trip into an improbable adventure and why after 160 years of the author's first published volume he is still widely read... P.S. if you get this remember to wear a warm coat and turn up the heat while consuming the agreeable words.

When I was younger, I was a Jules Verne junkie. I read most of my library system's rather extensive collection of Verne's works and loved most of them (I still consider Mysterious Island to be half the reason (with Lord of the Rings) that I grew to love reading). The Fur Country, however, was problematic. If you've read any unabridged Verne, you'll know that he LOVES to describe things even rocks (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and fish (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea). Well, in Fur Country, the book depicts a long trip north into the wilds of Canada's arctic and unlike Verne's brilliant Adventures of Captain Hatteras, the trip is both dull and uneventful for the first hundred or so pages. I tried to read the Fur Country twice and both times I didn't make it past the Great Slave Lake, as I just couldn't take any more of the book's atrocious pacing. Eventually, from the illustrations, it appears the characters get stuck on some manner of floating island drifting through the Arctic Ocean, but I can't really comment on that since I never got anywhere near it. Possibly with some editing this could be a better book, but there are many better Verne stories out there, so I'd not bother.

Another great Jules Verne classic, set in 1859, Lt. Jasper Hobson and some other members of the Hudson's Bay Fur Company travel through Canada to Cape Bathurst on the Arctic Ocean to found a fort at 70 degrees, north of the polar circle. Then due to an earthquake they eventually realise that they are on an iceberg separated from land...

Another adventure in the icy areas of the north. This time we are following a much larger group trying to create a base for fur animals hunting. Of course, this is enough to create a problem for the modern reader, with the endless descriptions of a hunt that nowadays is reprehensible. Most likely, however, this should be considered not very important in the face of the excellent and very detailed narration of a trip to unexplored areas, with the many dangers for which they receive great compensation from the beautiful landscape they cross. This detail gives a historical value in the first part of the book. Of course, to be honest, this is not enough to create an interesting book and certainly, after a while, all these descriptions become tedious and repetitive.

From this repetition comes to save us an incredible event that puts our heroes in great adventures and they need to mobilize all their courage and ingenuity to be able to survive. This adventure fills the whole second part and its detailed recording by the author which includes the psychology of our heroes in the face of all that nature throws against them makes things very better. So the second part becomes very exciting, until the end and it is able to compensate the reader for the simple first part. So this book takes its place in the good moments of the author.

This book is rather special to me, as it takes place for the most part in northern Canada, and features a total solar eclipse.

As in "The Adventures of Captain Hatteras," the behavior of polar bears is the most annoying error in Verne's description. I want to write letters of criticism to a long-dead author:

1. Polar bears are very intelligent. You got that right.
2. They are not gregarious, and do not lay siege to fortifications.
3. Even when they are not hungry, adult polar bears do not act in a friendly, indifferent, or benevolent manner towards human beings. Ever.

I liked this book. There were plenty of plot twists and cliffhangers.

A group of English people, led by commander Jasper, try to survive in Northern West Canada. Their mission is to establish an outpost for furs trade. Amongst them goes an old astronomer called Thomas Black who wants to observe a solar eclipse meant to happen in the year 1861.

The group ends up drifting in the ocean, on board a piece of ice... with a sail. They are rescued by Aleutian fishermen.

It all started with a little settlement they built and called Victory. Victory turned into an island. They got puzzled by the change in the geographical coordinates....

Their astronomer didn’t manage to watch the astronomical event but he still hopes that within 26 years they will gather again, to watch another eclipse.

Great adventure with tragic moments happening especially in the midst of the winter season. Icy moments approached. A study on cold (ness) and human survival in spite of the odds. A very down to earth (snow, often times) narrative.

This is definitely a book of two halves. The first is a bit of a slog, detailing an expedition into the Arctic region by mostly nondescript characters: an astronomer, a lady scientist, trappers, soldiers, etc. As usual, Verne goes to town on the scientific factoids while paying scant regard to the actual people involved. It's all vaguely interesting, if dated, and I found myself wondering if the story was ever going to kick up a gear and enter that rarefied Vernian adventure mode.

It does. And then some.

The second half is nail-biting stuff. I won't spoil what happens, but the entire plot hinges on an extraordinary occurrence that pitches the expedition a startling survival curve-ball. It's one of Verne's wildest and most imaginative "semi-fantasy" scenarios. If he'd worked harder on the characterizations, this could have been an all-timer sequence. I could picture the whole thing unfolding in front of me, with all its terrifying implications. It makes the first half seem like a weekend at the lodge. Unfortunately, with the exception of perhaps Mrs Barnett, we're left to experience it through the eyes of several interchangeable and indistinct protagonists, and it robs the story of any memorable human dimension. That ultimately hurts the story insofar as emotion, crucial when you're rooting for individuals in a survival plight, is almost entirely missing in the most critical life-or-death moments here.

Verne fans will enjoy this. But the adventure ultimately rings a little hollow, despite all the hard work the author put into bringing his scenario to life.

I literally had this one pegged as a two-star Verne with too many characters in the same vein as In Search of the Castaways . Then, the last twenty-five percent gets really good, like From the Earth to the Moon good with its characters springing to life under the extreme dangers that crop up and making everything else before it look very trite. Unfortunately, it still takes forever to get to the good stuff with way too much frontloading of history and nature, so The Adventures of Captain Hatteras is still my pick for an Arctic Verne adventure, but if you can get through the fist half, the end of this book is actually pretty worth it.

I’m trying to go through all Verne’s work. This was the tenth book in the “Extraordinary Voyages” series I read. I couldn’t find a proper edition in Spanish to read, so I searched and found this English public edition with Kindle. The translation is by N. d’Anvers, pseudonym for Mrs. Nancy Bell. Since my English is at medium level, I found kind of difficult to do a fast reading. It took a lot of tie to finish it, I left the book unfinished two times.

A nice adventure that takes us to northern America. We’ll follow lieutenant Hobson and a group of soldiers, hunters, carpenter, explorer and female companions. There’s an astronomer too. Ached in the book well have some esquimaux. The hunting topic, in such scale, is something I felt disgusting. The figure of female main character is presented with such an importance, not seen like this before in previous Verne’s books. The faith of many of the characters is shown as a very important value, another thing I’ve never seen before in previous books of the series The story has a lot of dramatic events that challenge the characters, more than the usual in previous Verne’s stories. You can be feeling some hope and then suddenly misfortune comes again to make things worse. The book gets better in the second part.

Interesting novel, where Verne not only takes us to remote and exotic places, but also takes the places out of their geographical position and sends them rowing around!
The characters in this tale build a fort in cape Bathurst, in North Canada, but during an earthquake the whole cape separates from the continent and starts travelling northwards.
The poor twenty-one persons on the floating "island" (including a baby born there) must fight against circumstances, while their situation gets steadily worse.
Fortunately, there is a happy end.
=================================================

I was surprised at how well Jules Verne can construct a story almost solely based on numbers. Throughout the book, Verne gives numbers, and numbers, and more numbers describing their location, the weather, and several other things. Surprisingly though, it doesn't get dull, and the numbers are explained well enough to actually make the story interesting. I found myself drawn into the plot and the characters. I think that this one is worthy of being put up there with Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea and Journey to the Center of the Earth in quality. It doesn't have as good a plot, but the numbers aren't dull, and you can actually read it comfortably.

Verne should have called this novel 'Off on an Iceberg', it's far catchier than the title he came up with. An assortment of soldiers, hunters, an astronomer and an eccentric British explorer (recurring theme of Verne's this) suddenly discover that a piece of Canadian terra firma that they had built a stockade on turns about to be an ice shelf, which floats off into the wild blue yonder complete with it's own eco-system of vegetation and wild animals (an early version of Silent Running as it were). It's reasonably interesting but any suspense in the plot is vitiated by an A-Teamesque ability of the group to survive any disaster which is thrown at them. Not one of Verne's best, but passes the time.

Outpost travel adventures with the Hudson's Bay Fur Company in the Northwest Territories. We learn of trapping Siberian squirrels, muskrats, polar bears, polecats, lynxes, foxes, badgers and beavers, sables and ermines, wolves and wolverines, as we encounter the aurora borealis, a solar eclipse and endless Arctic perils. Even Captain Hatteras gets a token mention.
