A former bookseller, he completed his Honours degree in creative writing at the University of Canberra in 2004, and now calls Sydney home. His debut novel, Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds, was the 2019 Australian Book Industry Award winner for Book of the Year for Older Children, and its sequel, Jane Doe and the Key of All Souls, was shortlisted for the same award in 2021, but both of those pale in comparison to the $100 he once took home in a karaoke competition. He came up with the idea for the Jane Doe Chronicles while lost in the Cairo Museum.

This was a super cute and entertaining read!! 🤩🤩 I used to read tons of middle grade but stopped a few months ago, so it was fun to read this! 💕
The Cradle of All Worlds follows Jane Doe, our adventurous mc. 14 years ago, she and her father arrived on the steps of the Manor, which is the entrance to a labyrinth connecting their island to many other worlds. Since then, Bluehaven has been plagued with earthquakes so Jane and her father are ostracised by the island's community. But when John disappears back into the Manor, Jane must embark on a dangerous mission to rescue him- but there is something sinister waiting for her in the Manor....
This was a really fun middle grade fantasy that I picked up on a whim but turned out to be quite enjoyable!! 🙌 It was a really nice way to pass the time ✨
The main things I enjoyed about it were definitely the plot and the worldbuilding 🤩🤩 The plot was super action-paced and entertaining and i rarely found myself getting bored. There were quite a few good twists and it was just super entertaining! The worldbuilding was also done really well, with a super unique and well-developed world. I really enjoyed exploring the Manor alongside Jane and seeing all the interesting creatures that dwelled within. It was really good! 💕
I had kinda mixed feelings on the writing- it was okay and pretty easy to read, but it did feel a little juvenile which i wasn't a fan of 😕 My biggest problem with the book was definitely the characters, as I never really connected to them. Jane was actually pretty irritating 😬🙈The rest of the characters were just bland tbh. The only slightly interesting one was Violet, who was pretty cool. But even she felt underdeveloped.
Also, I could feel that the author was trying to introduce a romance and it just felt... wrong. It was very out of place bc the mcs felt very young so i just wish it hadn't been included tbh 😒
Overall, this was very fun!! 💜💜 I would recommend if you want:

✔ Unique world
✔ Lots of action
✔ Entertaining story!

This is a fabulous debut YA novel by Jeremy Lachlan. I'd probably put it at the upper end of middle grade/primary or the young end of YA.
It's an action-packed adventure story about Jane Doe who enters the mysterious manor on a quest to find her father. The manor is a giant ever-changing labyrinth with traps, hazzards, bad guys and other dangers at every turn. It's more a character than a place. It's also what connects and supports all of the worlds. So when Jane discovers it's been invaded by the evil Roth, placing all worlds in danger, her plans morph into something bigger.
This book has great characters, dry humour, and lots of tricky situations Jane needs to escape from. It's non-stop action.
I don't think it crosses over that well to an adult audience, but kids will probably love it. And this is book 1 in the series, so there's more adventure to come.

Der Klappentext wird diesem außergewöhnlichen Buch nicht gerecht! Aber er hat mich neugierig genug auf das Buch gemacht, um mich auf dieses wirklich humorvolle und spannende Lese-Abenteuer einzulassen…

Doch vor vierzehn Jahren, in der Nacht des großen Bebens, hat das Schloss plötzlich John White und seine kleine Tochter Jane ausgespuckt. Seitdem ist das Tor verschlossen. Meine Tochter Emma würde jetzt rein beim Plot die Augen verdrehen und sagen: „Das ja so wie IMMER: Mädchen wächst ärmlich auf, entdeckt ihre besondere Gabe und Bestimmung und rettet die Welt“
Klischee? … aber neee!!!
Denn Jane ist wahrlich kein normales Mädchen. Sie ist der totale Antiheld! Respektlos, schlagfertig und so gar kein typisches Mädchen – sie war mir auf Anhieb mega sympathisch!
Jane lebt gerade so geduldet mit ihrem geistig verwirrten Vater in einem Keller. Alle glauben, sie wären verantwortlich für die zahlreichen Erdbeben in Bluehaven. Und dafür, dass sich das Schloss nicht mehr öffnen will seit sie damals hindurch gekommen sind.
„Wahrscheinlich gibt es in der ganzen Stadt keine einzige Fläche ohne Sprung – einer der Hauptgründe, weshalb die Stadtbewohner mich hier in etwa so willkommen heißen wie einen Furz in der Badewanne.“

Das Schloss ist eine Art Portal, die Abenteurern den Zugang zu tausenden Welten ermöglicht. Eine schöne, recht neue Fantasy Idee. Der Weltenaufbau von Wiege aller Welten ist somit kompakt und doch unendlich zugleich.
Nach 12 Jahren öffnet sich das Schloss erneut und im allgemeinen Tumult tritt Janes Vater durch das Tor. So nimmt ein unglaubliches Abenteuer seinen Lauf…
Die Helden der Geschichte – Jane, Violet und Hickory – sind eigentlich alles keine wahren Helden. Jeder der 3 ist im Schloss gefangen.
Jane weil sie anscheinend ihrer Bestimmung folgen soll. Doch sie will eigentlich nur ihren Vater wieder finden. Der Rest ist ihr schnuppe.
„Ich bin es gewohnt, mir über Hausarbeit Gedanken zu machen, über Fluchtwege und ruppige Fischer, nicht den Anbeginn allen Seins. Mir tut der Kopf weh.“

Interessant finde ich auch, wie selbstverständlich hier diverse Themen eingeflochten werden, die sonst noch sehr stiefmütterlich in unserer Gesellschaft behandelt werden. Super! So soll es sein.
Plot, Weltenbau, Spannungsbogen – alles super… was aber absolut hervor sticht, ist die Sprache! Moderne Sprache in Kombination mit einer durch und durch magischen Welt. Ein durchweg lockerer Tonfall überrascht immer wieder aufs Neue und hat mich mehr als einmal laut zum Lachen gebracht! Kompliment an den Autor, aber auch an die Übersetzerin Nadine Mannchen! Das bestimmt nicht leicht. Aber es hat sich gelohnt! Selbst wenn der Rest nicht so toll wäre wie er ist würde ich Euch das Buch ans Herz legen!
Das Ende? Das ist die Achillesferse… Weder der Klappentext noch die Werbung auf der Verlagsseite oder diversen Onlineshops lassen erkennen, dass es sich bei Die Wiege aller Welten um einen Zweiteiler handelt. Schade. Das weiß ich eigentlich immer gern im Voraus. Das Buch hat einen tollen Spannungsbogen, der in einem riesigen Ätsch endet. Genialer Plottwist – nur ist man so damit beschäftigt sich zu ärgern, dass man den im ersten Moment gar nicht würdigen kann.
Mit einem Tag Abstand jedoch, freue ich mich sehr auf die Fortsetzung. Jeremy Lachlan ist vom Humor her ein wenig mit Jonathan Stroud vergleichbar. Sprachlich setzt er jedoch nochmal eine Schippe drauf. Ich freue mich auf noch viele weitere Bücher dieses Autors!
Die Wiege aller Welten ist frisch, modern, komplex und humorvoll. Und ich liebe Jane!!! 5 von 5 Lieblingslesesessel.

Jeremy Lachlan is a wonderfully imaginative and ingenious voice in Australian young adult literature. Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds is breathtaking and delightfully captivating until the final page.
The island nation of Bluehaven is a picturesque community, a village permeated by earthquakes and immersed in mythology. For thousands of years, the residents of Bluehaven have apotheosised the remnants of the entrance to another world, a decrepit, monument representing adventure and heroism. The entrance dormant since John and infant daughter Jane Doe arrived on the cusp of destruction, the Night of All Catastrophes.
The Cursed Ones
Fifteen year old Jane Doe and her father are undesirables, contaminating the community of Bluehaven. Reluctantly imprisoned within the basement of Beatrice and Bertram Hollow where Jane cares for her father, incapacitated since his unexpected arrival on the island. Each tremor brings accusations of an abomination, Bluehaven remonstrating against John and Jane Doe until the annual Night of All Catastrophes celebration. During the commotion, John Doe is consumed by the labyrinth.
With gallantry and tenacity, Jane embarks on a adventure to recapture her father and return to Bluehaven. Accompanied by whispered words from the peculiar Winifred Robin and a mysterious brass key, Jane evades the vigilante community and enters the labyrinth. Alone. Abandoning Violet Hollow, her friend and coconspirator.
The Sidekicks
Jane must navigate through wintery wonderlands and arid, desolate conditions as each landscape challenges courageous, accomplished adventurers. Hickory Dawes continues to journey through the decrepit remnants, unable to escape. Hickory understands the extraordinary ecosystem of the labyrinths, entrances infringing upon the otherworld. Jane and Hickory agree on a tentative alliance, reluctantly, Jane still uncertain of his intentions and authenticity.
Violet Hollow is an incredible heroine. Although Jane has journeyed several days, Violet is now sixteen years old and no longer a pyromaniac child seeking adventure. When Jane disappeared, Violet immersed herself within the history of the Otherworld and beneath the instruction of Winifred Robin, will reunite with Jane to salvage the catacombs. Bringing her friend and companion home.
Violet has endured the antagonism and resentment of Bluehaven as she was ostracised by her parents, now residing within the library under the supervision of Winifred. Her journey is miraculous and incredible heroic, creating an inspirational character of determination and perseverance.
The Villian. Dun. Dun. Dun
Roth is man withered by disease, a decomposing illness throughout his decrepit world now infecting the labyrinths. Roth is determined to conquer each world, his artillery composing of soldiers bound in leather and enslaved humans. To escape the Otherworld, Roth must capture Jane and the brass key.
It's Just A Little Crush
Throughout literature written for the middle grade and young adolescent audience, friendships are at the forefront of the narrative. The friendship was beautifully compassionate but beneath the companionship, a wonderful attraction is flourishing. Jane is attracted to Violet, exploring unfamiliar feelings of her first infatuation. A wonderfully tender and delightful inclusion.
Absolutely Phenomenal
Incredibly atmospheric and intricately engineered. A phenomenal blend of fantastical and dystopian landscapes, meticulously illustrated and beautifully cinematic.

I read this to my kids a couple of chapters each night over a few weeks. We had a break where I went away for work and they were not best pleased. In fact, every time we read, the moment I said, ‘we’ll stop here’ the protests were loud and bitter!
Things I particularly loved: readability! I love reading aloud. I have a tremendous fondness for the sound and texture of words on the tongue. Reading Jane Doe aloud was a joy. I kept noticing it. I kept thinking, gosh this is so great to read aloud - what sorcery has Jeremy gotten up to, to make it so beautiful on the lips/teeth/tongue? I NEED THIS SPELL. Also, I think a big part of it was how much I connected with Jane’s voice. Such delicious snark.
The world of Bluehaven and the Manor. I was right in there living and breathing the details. The Manor is a wonder and a nightmare in one.
Violet: 100%
Unravelling mystery: 100%
Humour: I Am Here For This. Much like Joss Whedon says - make it tough, make it dark, make it grim but then for the love of sanity, crack a joke (paraphrased) Jeremy Lachlan is so good at this! Making many creepy bits palatable. However, there were parts that were too dark for my youngest (10 year old) girl, whose stomach isn’t quite a steely as her older sister’s (12) One particular part that is written with such immaculate detail I had to skip a few paragraphs to get her past the scene without inflicting nightmares. I will pop it in a spoiler below, so let your eyes glaze over for that bit if you don’t want anything ruined.
Mythology: I am here for the gods and the keys and Manor being a sentient being.
Evil: learherheads! Tinskins! Roth! The stakes are high!
Twists: I need a foam neck support to recover.
Demand for book 2: VERY HIGH!

Okay, you asked for it:
So there’s this scene where Jane and Hickory are lost in this forest where the pollen or something makes them a bit stoned (for lack of a better word) and they are slow to realize that the forest is carnivorous and then they spot half digested corpses in the branches and well needless to say, Jeremy does a really good job describing this with exquisite detail. I looked at my daughter’s face and said, is this too scary? She was hiding behind her pillow. She said ... um ... I don’t know. Ha! So desperate to be brave. I said, shall I just summarize this bit? Again she says ... um ... I don’t know. I took it as a yes. HA!
Happy to report: no nightmares! And much eagerness for more Jane Doe.

Humour: I Am Here For This. Much like Joss Whedon says - make it tough, make it dark, make it grim but then for the love of sanity, crack a joke (paraphrased) Jeremy Lachlan is so good at this! Making many creepy bits palatable. However, there were parts that were too dark for my youngest (10 year old) girl, whose stomach isn’t quite a steely as her older sister’s (12) One particular part that is written with such immaculate detail I had to skip a few paragraphs to get her past the scene without inflicting nightmares. I will pop it in a spoiler below, so let your eyes glaze over for that bit if you don’t want anything ruined.
Mythology: I am here for the gods and the keys and Manor being a sentient being.
Evil: learherheads! Tinskins! Roth! The stakes are high!
Twists: I need a foam neck support to recover.

So there’s this scene where Jane and Hickory are lost in this forest where the pollen or something makes them a bit stoned (for lack of a better word) and they are slow to realize that the forest is carnivorous and then they spot half digested corpses in the branches and well needless to say, Jeremy does a really good job describing this with exquisite detail. I looked at my daughter’s face and said, is this too scary? She was hiding behind her pillow. She said ... um ... I don’t know. Ha! So desperate to be brave. I said, shall I just summarize this bit? Again she says ... um ... I don’t know. I took it as a yes. HA!
Happy to report: no nightmares! And much eagerness for more Jane Doe.

Ah dit was een snelle aangename middle grade en hoewel het begin me wat te traag ging en ik wel wat opmerkingen heb, waren er ook heel veel elementen die ik wel heel tof vond en ik ben oprecht benieuwd naar hoe het verder gaat! Dit is het soort boeken dat ik als kind verslond en die nostalgie voelde ik volledig terug! Zalig gewoon.

"Simple minds fear what is different..."
Yes I am rating this 5 stars as this was one of the best adventures I have read this year. From the first page, right to the very end, this book was full of nothing but page turning, action packed adventure!! Something was always happening on every chapter - it was never a dull moment. What I also enjoyed were the mysteries that were within the underlying story. The biggest mystery of all - who is our protagonist Jane Doe? where did she come from? why is she here? why do people fear her? At only 14 years old she is burdened with a reputation she doesn't understand how she acquired, has had to take full time care of her ill father who appears to know more than he is letting on, they are both stuck in a basement they are forced to live in and she is denied the right of education. Yet with all this, Jane retains her determination to find the truth that will ultimately set her free and embarks on an adventure that can be life threatening. Throughout the book I read and loved how the plot had elements of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and to my delight, elements of my all time favourite TV show Grimm (yes Grimm - think keys). I would recommend this book to those who, like me, read and loved Nevermoor by Jessica Townsend. The action pace, the mystery, the intrigue, the magic and the wonder that holds you captive right to the very end that will leave you gaping and wanting to know more.. Toller Schreibstil, von Anfang an spannende Story, eine super syphatische und taffe Protagonistin, die sich rein gar nichts sagen lässt.
Ich mag Janes Art, ihr freches Mundwerk und wie ihr Gehirn tickt.
Die Story ist wirklich interessant und auch wenn das Buch ab 12 Jahren ist, sollte man sich davon nicht täuschen lassen. An manchen stellen wird es doch recht aufregend und blutig.

Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds is a fast paced gripping, adventure story, with a fantastic twist at the end!
The characters are fantastic, (I think my Violet is well on track to be a fan favourite!), the weird monsters are awesome, the manor comes to life in an amazing way and the villain is one of the creepiest, down right terrifying, bad guys out there!
This book kept me on the edge of my seat right up until the last page and now I already can't wait for the sequel!

What a great action adventure story for kids 12+!
There is a lot of humour, a little Indiana Jones and plenty of questions within this book.
Jane doesn't know a lot about herself or her dad but she loves him with all her heart. Everything she does is to protect him. When he one day disappears she begins a spooky, scary quest in to the heart of the labyrinth to find him before anyone else does.
Of course, you can't have an adventure without sidekicks...so watch out for them. I have to say, I LOVE Violet. She is one kick-ass character helping out where she can.
Secrets, twists, turns and betrayal are rife throughout this book. You never know what is going to happen or who it will happen to. You will love some characters and despise others. I would be very surprised, however, if you didn't laugh out loud at some moments in this book.
Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds is going to appeal to both boys and girls who are fans of the Narnia Chronicles, Maze Runner, Indiana Jones and any other action/adventure book you can think of!

This was a very good YA novel for younger readers. Cool world to explore, fun characters and I loved the first person narration. Being a bit older than target readers age, I found the main plot points a little predictable however for the younger readers I think they will love this. Their imagination and amazement will get caught up in the story. I feel like this could be a big seller and I hope it does as its an extremely fun read. My only complaint is that the 2nd half just felt like it direction hadnt been planned, like the story was made up as it was being written. Highly recommend to read to your kids or to buy for younger readers.

An awesome cliffhanger!
Action-packed with a sassy heroine and a very interesting plot. This reminds me very much of the His Dark Materials trilogy by Phillip Pullman.
This is the perfect book for middle-grade readers or just older kids wanting to get into reading.

A rip-roaring, breathless adventure, filled with thrilling action sequences, enormous world building and a terrific collection of witty and engaging characters, especially its title character. Almost impossible to put down. It puts its foot to the pedal and barely stops for breath, with genuine surprises at every turn. The next installment can’t come fast enough!

Warning, warning! Middle-aged lady review:
I picked this book up a few months ago and read the first section after hearing great things on social media - and, loved it.
I’d read reviews saying the book was ‘middle grade fiction’, and thought it would be fine for a primary school audience.
But, when I saw the book nominated for the 2019 ABIA Awards for the ‘13+ yrs older children’, I popped the book into my handbag and brought it home to read properly over the weekend.
While there were a few ‘iffy’ words (‘bloody’ and ‘damn’, etc), this has to be one of my favourite #LoveOzMG novels this year.
Within these pages I’ve met one of my favourite characters: Winifred. Librarian, adventurer & a kick-butt awesome, middle aged woman. Yes!
Author Jeremy Lachlan has created brilliant female characters in Jane Doe and Violet. I’ve not been this excited about a fantasy adventure story with a lead female character since ‘Lintang and the pirate queen’ by Tamara Moss. Bravo.
Who would I recommend this inter-world-travelling, adventure story too? Committed readers from 11 years upwards.
Younger readers will enjoy the Indiana Jones-style action, the banter and interactions between Violet, Hickory and Jane and the pace. But, with over 400 pages this is a big read! And, book 1 in a series.
Can’t believe we have to wait several months for the next book. More, please!

Die Wiege aller Welten konnte mich bereits vor einem Jahr richtig begeistern. Nun beim reread für Band 2 muss ich festellen das die Geschichte auch beim zweiten Lesen nichts von ihrer Magie verloren hat.
In Bluehaven steht ein magisches Schloss in dem jeder der sich hinein traut sensationelle Abenteuer erleben kann. Doch vor 14 Jahren stolperten John White und seine Tochter Jane durch den Eingang nach Bluehaven und seit dem ist das Tor geschlossen. Die beiden werden nun als Grund dafür angesehenund sind im Dorf geächtet. Als sich die Situation zuspitzt und ein Lynchmob Jane zur rechenschaft ziehen will gibt es ein großes Erdbeben, das Schloss öffnet sich kurz und Jane kann entkommen und damit beginnt das Abenteuer ihres Lebens...
Jeremy Lachlan hat mit Jane eine rotzfreche, starke und sympatische Protagonistin erschaffen die sich nichts gefallen lässt. Durch ihren trockenen Humor war ich mit ihr direkt auf einer Wellenlänge und ih hab sie gleich ins Herz geschlossen.
Der Autor hat eine unglaublich magische Fantasywelt erschaffen die einem mit jeder neuen Seite überrascht. Die ausgeklügelte Geschichte lässt einen nicht mehr los so das man sich gar nicht von den Seiten los reissen kann. Ich bin unheimlich gerne mit Jane durch die düsteren Gänge das Schlossen geirrt um seine Geheimnisse zu erkunden.
Der Mix aus Indianer Jones, Jumanji und Narnia konnte mich absolut überzeugen. Ich kann das Buch nur absolut empfehlen, die Geschichte kann jung und alt begeistern. Nun geht es weiter mit Band 2

Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds is a valiant effort by a local author, and one that will probably catch the minds of younger Young Adult readers. At times the book can't help feeling familiar - Jane is introduced living in the basement of an abusive household for reasons that are deemed "magically sound", the bulk of the novel's action consists of Running through a Maze - but Lachlan adds a few flourishes to make the story his own. Jane has an almost cute (albeit conveniently justified) crush, and there's a train chase that shows a good amount of imagination.
Unlike the current trend in mainstream YA fiction, Jane Doe and the Cradle of All Worlds does not tell a complete story. It would feel like it was on a cliffhanger to nowhere if Lachlan wasn't wise enough to have already inked a deal - and, presumably, already written the next instalment. There probably won't be much crossover with older readers, except those who pick it up in gay solidarity, but this is a meaty enough work for the mid-teens and below audience.

Ik ontving dit boek van uitgeverij Baeckens books, waarvoor heel veel dank. Het eerste wat me opviel aan het boek is de prachtige mysterieuze cover die direct mijn interesse wekte. Ik was dan ook heel nieuwsgierig naar het verhaal, en ik heb er oprecht van genoten! Dit verhaal bezit spanning, liefde, toffe personages en een unieke wereld om te ontdekken. Deze ingrediënten, in combinatie met een vlot lezende schrijfstijl, creëren een prachtig boek dat emoties los maakt en leest als een sneltrein.
Jane Doe is een hoofdpersonage om van te houden! Ze is bijzonder net zoals de wereld waarin het boek zich afspeelt. De plottwist op het einde had ik totaal niet zien aankomen! Ik ben dan ook zeer nieuwsgierig naar het vervolg want dit verhaal smaakt naar meer!

What darker, magical, thrilling, action-packed(definitely upper MG) story! Really enjoyed this. When a fierce quake strikes the remote island of Bluehaven, & her father disappears, Jane Doe is thrown headfirst into an epic quest to bring him home. But this is no ordinary rescue mission. Her father is lost in a place between worlds; a dangerous labyrinth of shifting rooms, infernal booby traps & secret gateways. & Jane has to find him fast, because someone else is searching for him, too. A man who knows her father's secrets. A man who has an army. With a pyromaniac named Violet & a trickster named Hickory by her side, Jane is about to discover that this adventure is even bigger on the inside than it looks.. Such a a complex, intricate, & creativity written world/story/characters. HIGHLY imaginative, & vividly detailed. Bluehaven itself is described so well in all its depressing, bitter glory. Then the manor?! Wow. It's like I was reading a movie instead of watching it. All the details with the mystery of Jane & her dad, the manor, Winifred, the Leatherheads, the Grip, the Cradle, the Tin-Skins, the Specters, Roth, the Makers, the key, & so much more make up this incredible tale. PHENOMENAL world/story building. Amazingly written characters-especially Jane, Hickory, & Violet. The villain (Roth)is even such a uniquely written character, just wow. So many twists & turns too. Wow - Every time I picked up this book I knew that my heart would be racing, I’d be skipping words and I’d be turning the page before I had even finished reading it.
It’s just one of those books that you shouldn’t read before bed if you need to relax!
Jane Doe and The Cradle of all Worlds is a cross between some of my favourite stories: Narnia, Indiana Jones, Nevermoor and Pan’s labyrinth.
It’s fast paced and action packed but the characters are so enchanting that it is not only the adventure you will want to read about, you’ll also want to get to know these character’s so much better.
The protagonist - Jane Doe is a young teenager who hates the town she lives in as the people have blamed her for anything bad that has happened for as long as she can remember.
Jane’s luck changes (well she might not see it that way!) when the largest earthquake to hit the town starts and her father, who has been bed bound and speechless since she was little opens the door to the mysterious manor and leaves without saying a word.
The manor is filled with rooms that change, rooms filled with traps and rooms that may haunt you forever. But all Jane knows is that she needs to save her father and bring him home - the only problem is that the doorway to home has been sealed and it is only through the help of an interesting character name Hickory and a mysterious girl that she may someday find her father and make it out of the manor - alive (and sane)
Jane is a character that all young readers will love, she speaks their language, thinks what they would be thinking but also shows courage and determination is the most difficult times. She will give those readers who aren’t into the bigger and longer fiction stories a reason to keep turning the pages with her sarcastic remarks and interesting thought bubbles.
Jane Doe and the Cradle of all worlds is only the first book in this series and it is one that readers will be waiting for!
It’s just one of those books that you shouldn’t read before bed if you need to relax!

There are so many mysteries in this book! As Jane Doe goes on the adventure to find her father she learns all sorts of secrets at the same time as the reader, which makes it really exciting and keeps you wanting to read on. I found the start of the story a little slow to get going, but once I was a third of the way through the book the excitement really started to kick in and then it became a real page turner.
I really enjoyed reading the parts set in the Manor where the rooms were shifting and one second there was one world and the next there was a completely different world to explore! This reminded me of when I read Harry Potter as there are so many corridors and all those moving stairs in that book but this is a very different kind of adventure! Overall this is an exciting, heart thumping, energetic book that will appeal to a lot of adventure readers.
There are some evil bad guy characters in the book but my favourite character has to be Jane Doe! Jane is such a strong and brave protagonist in the book. I love how she has amber eyes that really make her stand out more than usual when you picture her in your mind.
Jane has a tough life as she has to sleep in the basement of Violet’s house with her father and must look after him without any help. I feel real sympathy for her but I also admire her resilience to keep on living and to always be there for her dad. Jane has always felt so excluded by the villagers because they treated her and her father with no respect. I am amazed how Jane manages to block it all out and to keep on surviving. If I could be any person in this story it would have to be Jane!
I would recommend this to all mystery lovers who also like a bit of adventure. I would say this is for kids 12+ as I feel this book is aimed at pre-teens to teenagers. I thought it was a really exciting read!
If you read the book and love it as much as I do, I believe the second book is coming out in 2019. Can’t wait!

Jane must find a way to follow him, and a way to survive in a world far past her understanding.
I was so ticked off by having to count the swears in a book that is so obviously intended for middle grade! Jane’s journey is just starting and it is filled with both heroic characters, evil adversaries, imminent death at every turn, and the heartache of betrayal that this could have been a standout favorite for the year. It looks like the liberal application of swearing for the sake of swearing is trickling down in to #mglit now. I considered rating it NOT RECOMMENDED just to discourage this slippery slope.

Trigger warnings: bullying, violence, animal death, loss of a parent.
Eh. I think part of my problem with this is that I borrowed it from work almost a year ago and while I was excited to read it when I borrowed it, I put off reading it for so long that I basically stopped caring. So while this was very fast paced and very action-packed and had kind of an Indiana Jones but make it fantasy vibe to it, I struggled to actually give a shit.
I think in part I struggled because I'm honestly not sure who this is for. It reads very middle grade, but content-wise, it feels very YA. The main character is 15, but she doesn't really feel like it. Basically, this book + me = confused dog head tilt.
I wanted to love it, I really did. But I just sort of...nothing-ed it?
