Kay Hooper (aka Kay Robbins) was born in California, in an air force base hospital since her father was stationed there at the time. The family moved back to North Carolina shortly afterward, so she was raised and went to school there.
The oldest of three children, Kay has a brother two years younger and a sister seven years younger. Her father and brother are builders who own a highly respected construction company, and her mother worked for many years in personnel management before becoming Kay's personal assistant, a position she held until her untimely death in March 2002. Kay's sister Linda works as her Business Manager, Events Coordinator, and is playing a major role in the creation and operation of The Kay Hooper Foundation.
Kay graduated from East Rutherford High School and attended Isothermal Community College — where she quickly discovered that business classes did not in any way enthrall her. Switching to more involving courses such as history and literature, she also began to concentrate on writing, which had been a longtime interest. Very quickly hooked, she asked for a Christmas typewriter and began seriously working on her first novel. That book, a Regency romance titled Lady Thief, sold to Dell Publishing in 1980. She has since published more than 60 novels and four novellas.
Kay is single and lives in a very small town in North Carolina, not far from her father and siblings. Deigning to live with her are a flock of cats — Bonnie, Ginger, Oscar, Tuffy, Felix, Renny, and Isabel — of various personalities who all like sleeping on manuscripts and whatever research happens to be spread across Kay's desk. And living amongst the many felines are two cheerfully tolerant dogs, a shelter rescue, Bandit, who looks rather like a small sheepdog, and a Sheltie named Lizzie.
He asked if she was celibate for the last 5-6 years but we never find out if he was.....i hate it when you don’t get straight answers about H’s celibacy or lack of during a separation!

"Aces High" is the story of Katrina and Skye. The conclusion to the Hagen saga, this tells the story of ex lovers Katrina and Skye, who were torn apart by betrayal and secrets 6 years ago. Why Skye immersed himself in recklessness, Katrina spent a year being tortured in prison and since then shields herself against all the hurt. When they join hands to eliminate a common enemy, past secrets are exposed and true feelings re-emerge- along with the pain of past faithlessness. Can these separated lovers reunite? I really enjoyed the angst and sex filled journey between the two MCs. The hero was foot-in-the-mouth, impulsive and reckless; the heroine was cautious, strong and forgiving, and when they decided to take the second chance with each other, there were sparks! A good conclusion to the series, where we see glimpses of HEA of all the members, and a surprising one for Hagen and Gigi. ADORED the epilogue (for all!) Safe 4.5/5
I normally love Kay Hooper’s books, whether they be her older series romance books or her newer full length romantic suspense books. However, I was very disappointed in this book. It had a great premise but the execution was problematic.
The hero was a little bit too macho and controlling for my tastes but he also acknowledged his faults and was trying to change his behaviour. The heroine seemed to lack a backbone much of the times, but like the hero, she was trying to change her behaviour and she did begin to assert herself a bit.
The plot seemed weak compared to some of Hooper’s other books. It wasn’t awful but it didn’t do justice to the synopsis, which seemed to signify that the story would be extremely engaging; unfortunately, I found that the story was boring and it didn’t hold my interest.
The main reason for the boredom was that instead of focusing more on character and plot developments, Hooper substituted sex scenes for substance. This was a relatively short book but a large portion was comprised of frequent long sexual encounters between the hero and heroine. I like sex scenes in books and I don’t mind if the scenes are even much more explicit than Ms. Hooper’s. The problem is when too much space is devoted to sex scenes, compared to the storyline. Everyone has his or her own tolerance for the length, frequency and explicitness of sex scenes, so some readers won’t find it to be the problem that I did.
I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone, except for dedicated Hooper fans who want to complete the series. This is not the book that someone new to Hooper’s writing should start with. Unfortunately, it doesn’t convey the way that Hooper’s romance and romantic suspense books usually grab readers and hold their interest with stories that resonate long after the book is read.
A Vysoká hra dostává krásnou jednu hvězdičku! Proboha, proč si nakladatelství nemůže zkontrolovat, kolikátý díl vydává? Vydat poslední díl ze série jako první? Ne, díky, předchozí díly si nepřečtu, už vím, jak to skončí.
FINAL DECISION: A romance about second changes with a sexy hero. Fun and adventure in the plot which wraps up the whole series neatly. For fans of the series, this is a satisfying conclusion.
THE STORY: Skye Prescott has taken the role of the agent in the dark for years. He had fallen in love with a women who he learned with a Soviet spy and it almost destroyed him. When he meets her again, he discovers that he might have been wrong about her role. He is then determined to get her back. Katrina Keller loved Skye all those years ago. Now, she is rebuilding her life and doesn't want to risk her heart again. The two are stuck together in a plot to bring down a terrorist and also teach a lesson to the man who has been manipulating so many for years.
OPINION: This was a book where I enjoyed both the romance and the plot. Skye and Katrina have a sad and difficult history. This story, however, is not filled with angst. Instead, the story stays lighter despite the difficult history. This is a story that lives on the surface which makes it an enjoyable and quick read. I especially liked how different Skye is from his twin brother and how Skye lacks concern for his own safety but will protect himself to protect those who care for him. For how much action is in this book, I was surprised at how much the romance was able to be developed. This book manages to wonderfully conclude the series storyline regarding Hagen (the head of the secret government agency) that has been manipulating the characters in the series. He finally gets his just desserts. Readers should know that this series is light and funny and the characters are larger than life and not realistic. But the story is satisfying and I was especially pleased with the epilogue that gives readers an update on most of the couples in the series (I'm still upset that there are couples who were left out!)
WORTH MENTIONING: The epilogue of this book gives readers a final glimpse at the lives of the various couples from the series.
CONNECTED BOOKS: ACES HIGH is the tenth and final book in the Hagen series. It really should only be read as the conclusion to the series because there are too many characters and assumptions made about the knowledge of the reader to truly be enjoyable to someone who has not read the prior books.
This book is decently well written, but the attitudes and cultural assumptions are so supremely outdated that I could not find it in myself to like the book at all.
Skye Prescott was tall, dark and dangerous, a man who'd never forgotten how Katrina Keller had betrayed him years before...and never stopped hating himself for wanting her still. In a world where survival depended on suspicion, he'd fallen in love--and it had broken him as violence never had. When the beautiful redheaded ghost from his past reappeared in his life, Skye was filled with fury, hurt, a desire for revenge...and an aching hunger to make Katrina burn for him again. Katrina had fought her memories, had tried to heal the pain of losing Skye by building walls around her heart, but once she was in his arms, she couldn't fight him--or her own prima! passion. Skye had marked her once as his, had branded her soul. She was his match, his mate--but belonging to him body and spirit gave him the power to destroy her. Now that Skye faced his most violent enemy, Trina knew the gamble. Could she help her beloved renegade come back alive? I enjoyed the story, and am glad I finally finished this series. The ending was nice.
I love to read series books. Most of the time, I hate to see the series end. When an author ties up all the loose ends, and the ending of a series makes sense, it is a good thing. This is the end of a series like that. Thank you Ms. Hooper for not leaving us hanging and wondering.
