Burning for Him

A First Time Gay Romance.

JUSTIN

Before Tyler, it wasn’t like I wanted to die. I just didn’t really want to live.

All the crap I went through as a kid, then all the crap I went through in the Marines, now just making a living by beating the crap out of guys who owe my boss money? It’s like I’ve spent my entire life on a merry-go-round of trauma, PTSD and nightmares.

So yeah, sue me for wanting to get off.

But then along comes Tyler. Maybe there’s no such thing as fate, maybe its pure chance that keeps me bumping into him at just the right times. After the second or third time a scrawny little thing half your size accidentally saves your life, you kinda start reading into things, you know?

So maybe the universe did send him my way. If he’s some kinda apology for the hand I’ve been dealt until now…its not a bad one, gotta admit.

He makes me laugh. He lets me cry. He researches therapists and tells me I don’t need anyone to fight my battles, but he wants to fight them alongside me all the same.

He’s gonna have my baby.

And call me crazy, but for the first time in a long time, he’s got me believing that maybe I’ve got a life worth living after all.

TYLER

Out of my comfort zone doesn’t even begin to describe Justin. Try out of my comfort hemisphere. Now keep going.

I’m the next best thing to a virgin. I referee dungeons and dragons games for a living. He’s a tattooed, motorcycle-riding, ex-army badass. His muscles have muscles. His issues have issues.

And somehow, its like I’ve become his protector.

It sounds ridiculous even to me. Some cosmic joke, definitely. But its like I was put in his path for a reason. I can’t just walk away when I know I can help him.

And call me crazy, but he might be everything I’ve been looking for too.

He’s the furthest thing from the picture I had of my Mr. Right.

But now I can’t picture anyone else.

This 50,000 word novel features a lot of hurt, a road to recovery, mix in some mpreg and voila, a HEA. The sex scenes don’t have magical healing powers, but they sure don’t hurt…as long as you’re eighteen and up!

Tyler makes a living working in a comic book store. He referees Dungeon & Dragons tournaments for fun. His love for superheroes plays out in his life as he imagines scenarios where he plays the hero in the story. In the midst of a potential Armageddon from a blizzard in the south, he heads to the grocery store to stock up on necessities to ride out the storm. There he meets a tall, large and muscular stranger that he feels an instant connection to.

Justin is a former Marine who works as a repo man and for those who don’t pay, he roughs them up. This lifestyle is wearing on him and between his job, his childhood and his life in the Marines, he’s ready to give up on life because he seems to think it gave up on him a long time ago. As his last hoorah he plans to get drunk and end it all. He heads to the grocery store on his beer run and instead of leaving with the beer, the last case is taken by a skinny “geek”, and he leaves empty handed. He runs into this stranger again when he see the guy walking home. He doesn’t know what possesses him to stop and help the guy that ruined his plans but he does and helps the guy to his place.

Tyler doesn’t know what to make of this gorgeous stranger that keeps turning up but there’s no denying that there’s a definite connection there. Justin has this intensity to him and an inherent sadness in him that Tyler sees when he looks into his eyes. He’s convinced that Justin was brought into his life for Tyler to somehow save him. He doesn’t know how, all he knows is that he’s not giving up.

Justin keeps wondering why he keeps running into Tyler in the most random places. He’s never believed in coincidences, so he has to figure out the reason. It’s doesn’t take long to figure it out. Tyler is a balm to Justin’s troubled soul. He’s saved Justin’s life more than once and he’s the first person to accept Justin...the good and the bad. Justin doesn’t remember a time when he’s laughed the way he laughs with Tyler and Tyler lets him cry with no shame or need for apologies.

Tyler and Justin were just great together. I really loved how the author didn’t have Justin’s PTSD be an issue that was resolved overnight. The story showed Justin’s long arduous struggle to get a handle on it. I hope this gives people suffering from PTSD or someone who knows someone suffering from it, hope that there is a chance to having a full life and to not take the extreme measures Justin contemplated. This was a beautiful story that I believe needed to be told. Very well done.

I voluntarily reviewed an advanced copy of this book.

It felt too disconnected and unrealistic, nothing was explained. Yes it's an mpreg but what's the system? How does the baby pop out in this world? What's the background. I don't mind the insta-love but it didn't make sense and the events that happened were too easily resolved. Overall it just felt unrealistic

Out into the light.

Tyler bumps into handsome, tattooed man mountain Justin whilst in the grocery store, then again on the way home when he has to walk home with his shopping and Justin gives him a lift. Justin does repossession work for a criminal, is ex Marines and suffers everyday with PTSD and is soul deep tired of existing and just want it all to stop, permanently. How my heart ached and broke for Justin. Tyler is a sweet little nerd who works at a gaming store and often gets lost in his own imagination. After drinks together they end up back at Justin's where Tyler sees the chaos he's been living in, blown away by Tyler's kindness and compassion they end up intimate but wake up to a disaster happening that leads to Justin having to stay with Tyler, where he has a bad flashback nightmare and reveals everything to Tyler and Tyler admits to knowing about what Justin was planning to do. They both have very real feelings for each other and Tyler wants to help in any way he can and convinces Justin to see a therapist, both knowing Justin can't carry on as he is. Justin's first visit to the therapist whilst difficult was optimistically productive, him learning various coping techniques, Tyler supporting him unconditionally as the sessions progress building a strong bond of love and trust between them. Tyler starts to feel unwell and blood work reveals something they have both dreamed about making them happier than they've been in a long time as they begin ticking off their goals. Justin's criminal ex boss and enforcers make an appearance at his home making everything Justin's been worrying about for weeks become a reality but they aren't as smart as Tyler and Justin's paranoia for once pays off. Eventually they become the little family they all deserve to be and get a very well deserved HEA. I enjoyed this immensely and found it very emotional at times reading through tears. I felt so sorry for Justin's PTSD and for all of the real veterans who battle this everyday, I have nothing but awe for every one of them. Tyler's unwavering strength, compassion and never ending patience and commitment. Well written. I received a free advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I picked a sample of this book up with the intention of reading the first few pages to see if it merited inclusion on my wish list, and ended up buying it immediately and making it through to chapter 11 in one sitting. That's a rare enough occurrence for me, but the fact that it happened with a book that's lacking in several ways that would usually be deal-breakers for me is entirely unprecedented.

Part of that is likely due to the pairing. I have a weakness more prominent than Gohma's eye for the "handsome broody muscled soldier with PTSD" archetype, and damned if Justin didn't scratch that itch. Tyler was a good foil for him as well as a rather adorable character, but Justin was the main draw for me. Whatever else this book got wrong, it got him right... at least until the pregnancy, when his issues seemed to evaporate and he became the much-less-interesting "big strong alpha dad".

The pregnancy actually came out of left field for me. I got this as part of an Mpreg collection, so I was expecting it to some extent, but no one had mentioned it as a possibility, let alone done the whole "alpha/beta/omega" rundown that usually shows up in these novels. Tyler's just pregnant all of a sudden, and no one bats an eye. Is that a normal thing in this universe? Is Tyler special? Does it have something to do with the repeated mentions of how not-hairy he is? Why had no one considered that as a possibility for why he was feeling unwell before the blood test? Why was there never any question of using condoms? The novel never makes space for these questions to come up, let alone for them to be answered.

Really, that's not a surprise. The entire plot of this story is one ridiculous event after another, and I wish that the sudden unexplained male pregnancy was the worst of it. Usually I would have dropped this one at the third "chance meeting" (read: Deus ex Machina), but for the first time that I can remember, I found myself able to just sit back and enjoy the ride without needing anything to make sense.

Even more surprisingly, I wasn't driven to DNF by the frequent grammatical errors and awkward sentence structure, which is usually one of my berserk buttons. The author even committed the cardinal sin of mixing up the characters' names during Tyler's labour episode, which is particularly ridiculous when Tyler is the POV character- if his name shows up on the page outside of dialogue, that should be a red flag. And trust me, I did knock off a couple of stars for that. But I couldn't go lower than a 3 for a book that entertained me enough that I bought it instantly in defiance of my backlog and finished it within a few hours of starting it.

Don't misunderstand me: this is not a great book. It's nowhere near professional quality in any sense of the phrase. That said, though, I found it to be an enjoyable ride that didn't overstay its welcome.

This is a first time gay book in the Omegaverse. The interesting twist on this one is that it's usually the Omegas who are the experienced gay person in the relationship and the Alpha is the new one, but in this book, the reverse holds true. And the words Alpha and Omega don't really show up in the book, so it may not truly be an Omegaverse, but it is definitely a mpreg book.

Justin had a very bad war. He saw people that he cared deeply for die and lived through so many terrible things. Now that he's home, he just doesn't care anymore. He works as a kneebreaker and repo man, and he hates it, but he's good at it so he just does it. One night, a blizzard is about to hit, and he goes to the grocery store to buy some beer. However, there is a beautiful young man there who had his hands on the last case of his favorite beer. Justin let the guy have it and left, only to see the young man trying to walk through the cold and the beginnings of the blizzard. Justin decided that he'd pick him up and take him home. Then he will go home and kill himself.

Tyler is a lovely geekboy. He works at a game store, DMs games, and then goes home to his little apartment that is covered in all kinds of toys, games, and geek paraphernalia, including Star Wars sheets. He's always thought that he was straight, until he ran into a huge and gorgeous man at the grocery store who ended up taking him home from the grocery store when the weather turned horrible. Tyler knew that he would never see Justin again, right until Justin rushes into the game store where Tyler works and punches out one of the guys playing a game in the back.

I love Tyler and Justin together. There is a lot that goes on in this book, and some of it is truly heart-breaking. Justin does have serious PTSD and really just doesn't give a flying fig about anything. Tyler gets Justin to start taking care of himself and to do what he needs to do in order to get better.

One of the things that I love about this book is that it doesn't make Justin getting better seem like it happens overnight. You get the sense of time and you see some of the information about how much work it takes to get better. Justin has to train himself out of old habits and into new ones, which can be really hard to do. They truly are a beautiful couple together.

Goodness this was not good.

So it starts off with an instant connection/love moment where the main characters touch doing something innocent (like reach for the same 6 pack of beer) and it's given an inflated importance. Like sparks, or some feeling that draws them to each other. Which is total bullshit. And its then used to justify abnormal, or even weird creepy/stalker behavior, like following someone home or getting into the car with a virtual stranger, or protecting someone who ran into your place of employment and randomly punches one of your customers.

But seriously. Can we talk about the getting into a car with a stranger thing for a second? Tyler gets into a car with a man he doesn't know, who has followed him home, and then proceeds to not only give the strange man his address but also allow the man to walk him to his door. This is how you get serial killed, Tyler.

Aside from that, I had problems with the characterizations of both Tyler and Justin. Tyler doesn't have any career ambitions because....his ex broke up with him? Both of them "don't think [they] can go back to women after having a man", or some nonsense like that? Tyler just ignoring Justin's violent outburst in the game store and bringing him to game night like an idiot. How do Tyler and Justin have enough money to buy a 3+ bedroom house and a top of the line alarm system with Justin's salary? No talk of condoms or birth control, even though it appears in this reality men can get pregnant?

On that note - what was up with that? Apparently its no surprise that men can get pregnant in this universe, because no one is shocked when one ends up in the family way. But this is also not an A/B/O story. There is no discussion of it, it just happens. And it only happens 75% of the way through even though it's brought up in the blurb like its going to be important.

The reason this was rounded up and not down was because I appreciated that there was no magical love cure for Justin's problems. Tyler talked him into counseling, and only then (and after a lot of work) did he start to get better.

i read this book as part of an arc program. In this romance between Tyler and Justin, Tyler always thought he was straight , until he met Justin and realized he was attracted to him. Tyler had left New York for the south to follow a girl to college, but they broke up and he stayed. Tyler was a nerd and enjoyed playing games and he worked in a game store. When a storm was coming, he went to the grocery store to stock up and he met Justin when they both reached for the last case of beer. Justin told Tyler to take it and then he left the store. Tyler was instantly attracted to the tall, tattooed guy, but there was something about him that called to Tyler to talk to him, but he was gone. When Tyler was walking home, he was followed by Justin and Justin offered him a drive. When Justin left, he went home with the intention of killing himself, but without the beer, he lost the courage to do it. Justin was a former soldier and was haunted by things that happened in the war. When Tyler and Justin keep meeting, Tyler knows there is something about Justin that makes him want to get to know him more. When Tyler sees how Justin is living, he takes control and cleans up. Justin is shocked that someone cares enough to help him and they form a connection. When Justin learns Tyler has never been with a man, he wants him more. They begin a relationship, but Tyler wants Justin to get help and Justin agrees. I loved this story. Parts of it were heartbreaking about Justin's past. Tyler and Justin met at the right time for both of them. I love their connection and thought their chemistry was great. I love how Tyler knew Justin needed help and knew he couldn't help on his own. Well done.

This was a more emotionally heavy book than a lot of mpreg. Justin is a former marine who lost his lover to a land mine. He has a lot of issues and the day he meets Tyler, he’s planning on taking his own life. Meeting Tyler upends those plans and fate keeps pushing the two men together. I really liked that Tyler, once he realized Justin’s issues, made Justin getting help an important part of them being together. He doesn’t blackmail him, he just makes it clear he wants to go forward and he wants Justin to be there to. I’ve forward with. Something that can’t happen if he takes his own life. I enjoyed this book a lot. There are some coincidences, and some things that could have been delved into more, but it’s a category-length book, not a 90,000 word single-title so there’s only so many depths that could be plumbed. I read a lot of mpreg, so I was please with the honest to goodness black moment, which so many mpregs lack. I will say, I knew it was an mpreg because it was in the blurb, but Austin Bates’ world is so like our own, with no mention of Alphas or Omegas, that I’ve been taken by surprise by the sudden male pregnancy in the past and that threw me out. This time I was expecting it, so I ate up every baby name discussion, and the eventual labor scene. The epilogue was very satisfying. i’m Glad it takes place after several years have passed, since we needed to see Justin in a much healthier place emotionally and that wouldn’t have been believable if it had occurred earlier.

Tyler was out getting in supplies ahead of the predicted blizzard when reaching for the last pack of his favorite beer he encounters Justin.
With a blizzard forecast for the next day Tyler heads to the supermarket to stock up on supplies and find the place a nightmare with people grabbing whatever they can. Spotting the last pack of his favorite beer he grabs for it only to encounter a large hand and looking up a large muscular man who looks at him then rushes out of the shop. When Tyler get outside he find that his Uber car has been cancelled and no more are available so he starts walking and soon notices he is being followed by a black pickup truck. The man from the shop is driving and offers to give him a lift home. Justin is a troubled ex-marine and meeting Tyler will change his life. A ex-marine romance to relax and enjoy.

Tyler runs into Justin at the supermarket while trying to by the same beer. Tyler puts Justin’s hand on the door and walks out the store, in which Justin attempts to chase him down only to realize he still has his unpaid items with him. At this point Justin purchase his things and leaves only to find out he can’t get an Uber ride home, so he proceeds to walk. Tyler just so happens to be following him and only introduces himself when Justin’s bag breaks and his items go spilling in the street. From here a very sweet relationship starts to unfold. Justin has PTSD and was buying the beer to commit suicide, for some this maybe a bit much however, this book is very well written and the situation was handled very tastefully. Justin ended up reaching out for help in his own way and Tyler was listening. This was a very emotional read for me but also very enjoyable.

Each of these five books is a story of finding not only your partner but also your place in the world. The main characters are well drawn, allowing the reader to experience the emotions they are going through. None of the characters are 'the perfect match' but each put in the time and effort of becoming better men, even those who started out in a fairly good place. The action in the stories is swift and moves the plot, but the emphasis is on the emotional and psychological stresses of life. The first story sets the tone of the bundle but each story is a full read with Bates' usual grasp of the difficulties faced by men in today's society. These are not your candy floss escapist stories but I feel they are timely, inspiring, and hopeful. I am voluntarily reviewing this free ARC boxset of books without bias or compensation. I do not know the author, publisher, or have any connection with them except as a book reader.

Justin is an ex military man haunted by his past, at the point where ending his life looks like a valid option. He works a dangerous job in repossession for a creepy employer. He lost his lover in the service and the nightmares plague his sleep and flashbacks plague his days. On the day he decides to take his life, he meets Tyler...And changed his mind. And Tyler keeps saving him time and again.
Tyler never was attracted to men, but the pull he feels for Justin is unlike any he has ever known and he feels that he should explore the new desires he has for this man.... And also help save his life.

Burning For Him by Austin Bates is a great love story with interesting characters and a very satisfying HEA. I received an Advanced Readers Copy and am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

It was a pleasure reading how Justin acknowledged and sought help for his PTSD. This author tackled a sensitive topic with insight, depth and Grace. Tyler is fierce for a little guy. It was a pleasure reading how these two men of opposite personalities found each other. Justin's relationshiip with Wright added a dramatic touch to the story. While I usually love Austin's stories, I couldn't connect with this one. The characters' relationship made jumps that made me feel I missed a few chapters. There was no angst. It was a relationship by default. Tyler didn't experience any angst switching from women. What was it about Sheila's mind that Justin loved? I know Justin and Tyler loved each other, but I didn't feel the passion. It was an okay story. I received an ARC from Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review

It was super sweet love story. I loved the cute nerdy d&d player typer and ex Marine Justin's vibe. It was super touchy and the back story of Justin falling in love with the girl and her dying was so sad. I was confused I know Austin usually writes mpreg stories. So this is no surprise. I thought this was in this instance because, there was no mention of it being even possible with unprotected intercourse...odd. did Tyler he not know he was a Omega? Did he assume he was alpha because of his past relationships only been with wome. Are these set roles in the world. or can all have children. ?Was it a genetic annomaly for them? I was confused.

An enjoyable, emotional, and sometimes heartbreaking with just enough humor of the story of Tyler and Justins romance and some of their time together. It has a interesting and enjoyable storyline with just enough suspense and action to keep me turning the pages. Justin is damaged from PTSD and was just about to end it all when he meets Tyler. He lets him go ahead and take the last case of beer, then sees him walking and gives him a ride home in the blizzard. Tyler not realizing he was gay assists Justin in getting better. I liked that it was more realistic in it happened thru time but didn't drag out. I especially enjoyed the ending and epilogue very worth the read.

I loved this emotional and poignant love story. Justin has so many past issues and so much internal pain he's decided life's not worth living. Enter Tyler, a kind-hearted geek. They keep running into each other. Is it coincidence or fate. Tyler reaches out to Justin and slowly helps him change his perspective and gives him a reason to live. I really liked the way change didn't happen overnight for Justin, which made the story more realistic and believable. There is a lot of emotion, angst, hurt and comfort in this beautiful story. Warning, there are some dark themes like PTSD and thoughts of suicide that may be triggers for some people, but there is a fantastic HEA.

Justin is in a downwards spiral and doesn't know how to drag himself out of it, ever since he was discharged from the Marines, his life just seems to chug along, slowly getting worse, until he meets Tyler. Tyler's meeting with Justin puts him so out of his comfort zone, but he also feels safe with Justin. Tyler becomes a protector of sorts for Justin and helping him to fight his demons, while Justin makes Tyler feel something he wasn't ever sure he would find.

Justin had some serious issues and while they are just barely touched on in the book, you are still able to see him grow as a character. Tyler didn't have the same type of issues, but he was stuck in a rut and Justin was able to shake him out of it and into a whole new world.

What a wonderful story and such an unexpected love story. Tyler, a true nerd and proud of it. A gamer and proud of who he is. Justin meets Lance over the last of the beer in the grocery store awaiting a winter storm. Lance is a marine verteran with a bad case of PTSD. Tyler feels a connection to Lance, a need to help him. Tyler senses the inner turmoil in Justin, and not even realizes it, he has saved Justin's life a couple times. Their connection and love builds and such a great story about how Tyler works to help Justin to become whole again. How much work goes into their relationship, and how opposites truly do attract and balance each other. Love the HEA. I read this as an ARC as part of a bundle for my honest review

Burning for Him tells the story of Justin and Tyler. Justin is just barely making it day to day while struggling with PTSD. Tyler is a lonely game store employee. They meet at the grocery store while getting ready for a blizzard. Their story is filled with struggles, a fire, brutal bosses (both mental and physical) and in the end love and family. This a full circle kind of story with lots of love and a very very HEA.

This is a well written book with a heartbreaking story line. The author brings strong characters in Tyler and Justin and deals with some heavy issues. This story was interesting with all the different subjects it covered. PTSD, suicidal thoughts, pregnancy and ultimately falling in love. Some very heavy issues but I liked how it he brought counseling and coping mechanisms in so smoothly. They say good things come in small packages. Tyler definitely fit the bill.

He did not have anything to live for but he also did not want to die. All he seemed to do was fight. He never ever expected someone to come along to save him. Then they did. He was nothing like he had expected. They knew he needed saving and they knew it seemed to be up to them to save them. Could this be the start of a wonderful new relationship? Follow their journey

Chance encounters

From the first time Tyler met Justin he's been saving his life. Tyler is a nerdy guy who has more strength in him then he gave himself credit for. I liked him the best because he showed more sides of himself when it called for. Justin grew as a person when he realized he can be loved. Once he started working on his PTSD he thrived. I was happy he was portrayed that way, that disease can't be cure, however it can be managed. Thanks for writing this.

This book was different but still same what i mean is it is mpreg but there was no alpha or omega term used at all so it was just normal book if you get what i mean beside the Mpreg.

This book is the most intense story I have read by this author since the SEALed series books. My heart was pounding reading Justin’s issues, the pain, the heartbreak, and it I could almost feel it as if happened to myself. This one is highly recommended.

This book was heartwarming. PTSD is real, it's doesn't just go away. The characters went through some struggles and had some emotional conflicts to deal with. It was well written and worth reading. In all it ended with a happy ending.
