If you wanted to stop here, you could.

description

I mean, it's not over, but this had that typical never-ending Archie Andrews/ Riverdale feel to it. And I say that without a hint of sarcasm. It's the perfect sort of ending.
But it's not.
Because Archie is designed not to end. This is a land of perpetual teenagers with a perpetual love triangle. And I'm personally very ok with that.
description
After the events of the last volume, I thought this one would focus more on whether or not Betty would recover from the accident, but that was resolved surprisingly quickly, and then we were moving on to the ramifications.
What does this mean for Reggie? What does this mean for Archie and Veronica? What does this mean for poor, sweet Dillon?

description

I'm not as in love with this title as I was at first, but this is still a fantastic reboot of the classic Archie storyline, and I'm sure I'll be reading the next one.

This fifth volume, which collects Archie comics #23-27, continues the drama following the car crash at the end of Vol 4 in which Betty is injured after the ill-fated drag race between Archie and Reggie. As always, the art work is great, the story a delicate balance of pathos and teen humor. I really like the Toni character and, of course, the Archie-Betty-Ronnie love triangle plus the ever-popular Jughead Jones. The classic Archie themes of friendship, loyalty, love and integrity are treated here in an even-handed fashion. The teaser for The Archies series about the band was also fun - can’t wait to grab that and for Archie Vol 6 to drop!

It took me a while to read this. I will admit that I have been gobbled up by my Netflix account lately and have been reading little, but I think its anxiety more than stories. I have been in the Crown, Queen's Gambit and Glee. Anyway.

I'm trying to get my reading groove back. I have Archie from last year. At the end of the last volume, Bettye was in a car accident and this volume is all about the town dealing with dear Bettye being out of commission. It is plain how much Bettye is important to the whole town of Riverdale and they all miss her.

Archie is dealing with Bettye and Roni and Bettye's dad wants to keep Archie out of Bettye's life forever. Reggie is in jail, which is fun, but he gets out at the end and it's too soap opera to be believable. Still, you can't keep Reggie down.

This was a great forward motion for the story and interesting, but Bettye is standing by the end of the volume and if you are going to do something like this with a character, it shouldn't be so quick to heal. Soap Opera's always do that and it's cheap writing I think.

Oh this is heartbreaking but seeing everyone work together, it's sweet! And all the drama...sheesh!

Choosing - that's always hard. Relationships ended. Relationships began.

Oh man, I thought that was the end of the series!!!! Sheesh, don't do that! But that prologue though, need more of the Blossom twins ❤! Can’t wait!

Mark Waid gets serious as Betty recovers from her injury. However, he does a wonderful job of dealing with some serious content while adding plenty of humor. Waid puts the characters through their paces, shakes up the status quo, and gives even minor characters like Dilton a chance to shine. This continue to be one of the best comics on the shelves (no matter how much I hate saying that about an Archie comic).

After the cliffhanger of the last volume, I liked how they handled the outcome of Betty’s injury. She wasn’t miraculously cured (even though it may have felt that way) and it took time for her to heal. I would not say I was a fan of going back to the whole Betty versus Veronica dilemma but when it comes down to it, that is the core of even the original Archie series.

This was an enjoyable and quick read and I enjoyed it more than the previous volume. There was a moment that I thought about how this would be a good concluding volume to this reboot of the series but that left me confused as I know that the series does continue.

I will continue to read these comics and volumes as they truly are fun, quick, and entertaining reads to mix in between the novels that I typically read. For those that love comics, I would recommend this series and for those looking for an introduction into comics, this rebooted series would be a good place to start.

Whew! What an emotional issue. Unlike the first 4 volumes, this is my first time reading this installment in the Mark Waid run of Archie and there was a lot that was tied into this volume. Without spoiling too much, this volume directly deals with the fall out from volume 5. So many lives have been changed from the drag race between Archie and Reggie. I'm not sure that even I realized how emotional this volume would be for all of the characters involved. Waid does an excellent job navigating the changing dynamics while also presenting a new future for everyone. I actually did enjoy the artwork in this one and thought it beautifully captured the many beautiful narratives crafted by Waid.

For some reason I thought this was the end of this creative team and I just about cried. This was my fav story arc of the series (been reading since day 1) and I was not ready for things to change. GAH I love this.

Volume five of Mark Waid's Archie is set in the aftermath of last volume's car crash. And, there are important repercussions here that produce good drama ... but honestly, we know they'll be mostly resolved by the end of this volume.

Fortunately, that's not the heart of Mark Waid's Archie. Instead, it's a book about characters, and volume five manages to continue with that strength. There are very moving moments for a variety of characters, some of which are so critical as to almost redefine who they are. (Veronica's story is particularly strong in that regard.)

Also, as before, we get Waid's great storytelling techniques and narrative.

Overall, this is another strong volume of what's been a shockingly strong comic.

I like that this cover makes it look like the characters are having joint gay weddings. But this felt like the weakest storyline yet. It's the continuation of the "Betty's accident" plot from the last collection, which is trite and annoying because you know she's not actually going to be permanently paralyzed. Then there's a bunch of the -- I suppose classic -- love triangle stuff, but just because it's "classic" doesn't make it good.

I really hope this series picks up again with the next volume.

VISUALS: 5 stars!

Yay: The artworks improve a lot. I like it more, than Volume 4. This is exactly the kind of colored artwork I expect. Every page looks bright and sharp.

The faces of each character have improved. In the previous volume, Betty is neglected. Her brand look disappears completely. Here, Betty returns as being Betty. She looks like the girl next door who have captivated the world with her charm and intelligence.

Nay: I dislike the choice for the front cover. There are plenty of beautiful artworks inside that could have made a stronger impact than these four lead characters inside a star filled with flowers. This front cover is too detached from the story.

STORY: 5 stars!

Yay: The stories are awesome. It evolves into something deep without totally deviating from the original themes of the Archie Comics.

This book contains Issue Numbers 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27. It continues where Volume 4 has stopped, wherein the first few pages made me cry a little. I admire the characters' unity and resilience. Then, the middle part returns to love triangle.

I strongly see myself in the story as the first time I fell in love with my version of Betty Cooper was also a love triangle. My logic tends to get lost whenever I am in love - just like Dilton Doiley. Lol.

Nay: It is hard to single out the flaw. The flow of the plot is natural, smooth and fun from start until end.

[Read as single issues]
After the harrowing events of Over The Edge, Betty Cooper's life will never be the same.

There's a reason this arc is subtitled as 'The Heart Of Riverdale', because this volume really examines what Betty means, not just to our core characters, but to everyone else around her. Seeing her friends cope with what happened to her, as well as Betty herself, is so pitch perfectly done that Mark Waid and Ian Flynn should get a round of applause.

There's also a few subplots in play too, as Archie attempts to work out his feelings for Veronica, and the Blossom Twins make themselves known to the rest of Riverdale proper. Meanwhile Reggie feels the consequences of his actions (about damn time) while Dilton finally plucks up the courage to tell someone he cares about what he truly thinks.

With the cancellation of Josie & The Pussycats (boooo), Audrey Mok is free to join the main Archie book (yaaaaay), and slots right in nicely. After a few volumes of constant change, it looks like Mok is sticking around for the foreseeable future, so some consistency is always appreciated. Plus her style suits Riverdale to a tee, and her comedic timing for Archie's misadventures is great.

The Heart Of Riverdale? More like rip my heart out and stomp on it. Bring tissues, this one's sad.

I to ukazuje co v sobě jednotlivé charaktery mají.

Druhá polovina spíše řeší love triangle, je to sice trochu silné narušení fajn první části ale skvělý humor a dialogy to napravují.

This particular Archie comic had a more modern feel to it compared to past ones I have read. The book starts with Archie being challenged by Reggie Mantle to a car race - think Grease and then we have our Sandy, I mean Betty Cooper trying to stop the race except Reggie pushes it too far and she ends up pushed off a cliff. Betty lands in a wheelchair with the frightening news that she may not be able to walk again. As Betty is the volunteer queen of Riverdale, the team decides to pick up the slack by helping out. Archie, of course, isn't as agile and quick as he is in the TV show - in fact, in this comic, he is a klutz but still has his big heart and wants to help Betty. Hal Cooper though blames Archie and bans him from seeing Betty. Veronica and Archie's relationship is on the rocks as Veronica starts to notice just how much he loves and cares for Betty. Though Archie has some competition as Dilton Dooley has eyes for Betty too. While Reggie is in jail, he meets a guy with red hair who turns out to be Jason and Cheryl Blossom's biological father - this is probably where Cheryl got her nastiness and bad side from. Also at the end of the book, we see a sneak peek of the band The Archies which contains Veronica, Betty, Archie and Jughead. Our awesome foursome. Even if you aren't a fan of the TV Show Riverdale, you need to read the Archie comics as this is a series everyone needs to get on board with as Archie is the epitome of Classic Graphic novels.

It's been quite a shock to go back to Mark Waid's Archie after having just watched the first season of Riverdale. Waid does so much better with these characters, investing them with so much life and humanity. His B-story with Dilton in this collection for example, giving him a moment to flesh out beyond the brainy stereotype he's always been (and his friendship with Moose is great). Waid's Archie is a natural disaster in motion, played to full effect here for several memorable laughs. But the center of this story is Betty and her recovery, and how the whole community bands together around her. There are moments here that are very emotional, and Waid plays them out unflinchingly in a few situations. I also like how he manages to flip a trope or two (the 'overhearing a conversation and misinterpreting it' scene comes to mind, with Archie's comprehending and defusing of it being very refreshing). This series is still going strong, telling powerful stories of idealized characters who are also very much human.

Oh, and the Drama continues (and I love it!).

Betty is going at recovery/rehabilitation all alone (kinda stubbornly), but all she's thinking is "where is Archie?" :'(

Side note, is Toni Dilton's Jughead? Is she Jughead's Jughead? Either way, she's awesome. I loved her involvement in both getting Archie to Betty and getting Dilton to Betty. (lol Moose scowling when Milton almost calls Toni his best friend.)
I loved the "choose" scene & I'm loving the Drama!

There's other crazy Drama happening at the exact same time with Reggie and the Blossom twins' real father (up to no good), but I'm way more into the love square (?) between Betty and Dilton, Archie and Veronica, and then back to Archie and Betty.

Betty is an absolute boss & deals with both boys in a surprising and strong (and kind) way. Ditto with Veronica. Boss ladies, the both of them.

I don't think Archie will ever be as magical as it was in the initial Waid/Staples run but this is a nice return to smaller, character-driven stories. I really like Mok on art duties.

Archie is still a putz, though.

Minor spoilers below!

It has been so long since I read volume four that I had completely forgotten what had happened. Then I read the intro in this and was immediately reminded, and from there I couldn’t stop turning the pages. We pick up right where we left off. Betty is in the hospital and can’t feel her legs. Everyone is devastated. Not just her friends and family, but all of Riverdale. While she recuperates everyone pitches in to help with all of her volunteer work for the town.

What I love the most about this run is that while it has plenty of the classic Archie humor (Jughead eating, Archie almost dying in the most bizarre way, etc.) they also tackle real-world problems and handle them appropriately. Betty’s paralysis isn’t glossed over. You see the big stuff like her struggle through physical therapy and the private break down she has, but there’s also the little things that are rarely thought about. Like how her parents had to renovate the house to make it wheelchair accessible, and the fact that her hands get super dirty from spinning the wheels. Waid took everything into account, and it was much appreciated. I can’t lie, it was hard reading this sometimes. Betty goes through so much in this and she puts up such a strong front, but it’s impossible to go through something like this and not feel devastated at some point.

Of course, this wouldn’t be Archie without the never-ending BVA triangle and other romantic drama. My girl Betty made the right decision though. Also almost everyone in town hates Reggie and I’m glad cause homie really fucked up. Plus, that ending! Shit is about to go down. Gonna have to buy the next volume soon,

I love the way this series is going. In this volume, we continued the story of what happens to Betty after the drag race turned bad. But there are hints of the subplots from earlier volumes, and I can tell from the Prologue teased at the end of this volume that we're going to pick up where we left off before the drag race and get back into some drama. Not that what happened to Betty wasn't dramatic, but the town comes together to help her, and even though there are conflicts, like annoying Mr. Cooper keeping Archie and Betty apart, and the double love triangle, for the most part, this is a "feel-good" volume. So, I'm looking forward to Volume Six and getting back into the Blossoms' story and Reggie being the villain again (on purpose) and, hopefully, something happening with Archie and Betty or Veronica.
I love the little "bones" Waid throws to the watchers of Riverdale, like the scene between Betty and Jughead, which was actually very sweet and brought tears to my eyes. I almost forget that Waid doesn't write Riverdale too, but I like the way that he and Roberto Aguire-Sacasa play off each other.
Of course, I recommend this volume, just like all the others. The artwork isn't bad. One of the artists draws more like the original comics than the others do, and the scenes with Mr. Lodge made me smile because he looks like the Hiram Lodge I grew up seeing. Nobody will ever top Fiona Staples for me, but Mok does a great job of modernizing the comics but of staying true to the nostalgic characters as well.
I can't wait to read Volume Six!!

I really liked this one, it was nice 1) to see how Betty impacts everyone in Riverdale, and 2) for the OG love triangle to be back. (I think that's my issue with the TV show Riverdale: everybody is too happy in their relationships and the Betty-Archie-Veronica love triangle that is the heart and soul of so many Archie comics doesn't really exist. I need Archie sharing a milkshake with his two favourite gals!)

Really excited to see what happens next, especially since there'll be a dance. Formal school dances are where it's at.

While I love this series, I have to say I found this volume to just be OK compared to previous volumes. Perhaps it has to do with the high suspense that Vol. 4 and the cliffhanger endings in that volume. This volume also seemed as if it was a season finale type of volume. I'm curious to see if they allow Archie and the gang to age throughout this series or not. As always looking forward to Volume 6 in a few months!

The covers of these issues are beautiful. The artwork is no Fiona Staples but it's gorgeous. I think this is an adventure worth taking. I like that it's lighter than the show even with no romance between Betty and Jughead. I even like this whole Veronica-Betty-Archie love triangle, but to be clear, I still hate Veronica for some reason.
