As a young Palestinian woman raised in Brooklyn, during the rise of crack and Hip Hop, Suheir developed her own ideas of what words such as "race" and "culture" meant to her. Drops of This Story is her young soul in words. Readers will feel the growing pains of this young woman as she tries to write herself into existence.
"Little kids wanted to grow up to be movie stars. acting out famous movies scenes on Brooklyn stoops. Too bad all Latina girls had to play sluts. Asia boys had to be grocers. Black boys, thieves and pimps. Someone a;ways had to play Indian. Too bad the slut was always shot, the grocer always robbed, the thief always lynched, and the red land was always stolen." page 87.
Beautiful, moving memoir in poetry. Fantastic use of language, gorgeous, haunting, fierce, and stories that so many children of immigrants, including myself, will relate to. But even beyond that, Suheir covers the sorrows, and joys of life with such grace, everyone will be able to grow through this book.
