Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .
I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
1st in The Forsaken Chronicles. Cliffhanger. Dark paranormal urban fantasy. Small bites of humor in the characters. Violence included but not overly detailed. A squeamish moment or two for sure. Definitely Not a romance.
Adara doesn’t know who she is and if she tries to remember her past she feels debilitating pain She dreams. “She would never escape her dreams of darkness.”
Two would be heroes try to save and protect her: Logan, the wolf pack alpha, and Titus, a vampire. She doesn’t understand why they want to help or even if she wants to live. As pieces of her memory return, the wolf and vampire work together against the zombies thrown in her path.
The world isn't ready to know about supernaturals but they exist regardless.
Logan, Alpha of the town's Lycan population, is always on guard making sure his pack is safe. On routine patrol, Logan scents out death, the type of death that only come from zombies. Resigned to the fact he will need to do a clean up of the zombie and it's victim, Logan is amazed that the intended victim is still alive. Disposing of the zombie is the easy part as Logan's inner wolf decides the female needs his personal protection on a more personal and permanent level.
Titus, Master Vampire, is walking back to his lair after a hunt only to hear mental cries of agony the likes of which he hasn't encountered before. Finding the source, Titus is puzzled as the female he finds is not quite human but something more. It's been too long since he's had a companion to share his life with and there's something about this female that gives him hope she may be the one. Comforting her nightmare and leaving her still sleeping, Titus returns to his lair as dawn is approaches. He'll use all his resources to find out everything he can about this female before coming back at sunset to officially begin his courtship.
Adara has no past, only the present. Total amnesia from a trauma that should have killed her but didn't. Long term inpatient treatment and medications are the only things that have been able to keep the terrors at bay though it's time for her to move on and live in the real world. With no finances and resources, Adara's only choice is a job in the worst part of town.
What these three people don't realize is that it's not random fate that placed Adara where she is. Entities are at work to progress with the next phase of Adara's life which neither Logan nor Titus are suppose to be a part of.
* * * * *
New series from one of my fav author who has crossed over to the dark side. That's right, Ms. Langlais has changed course from her usual writing style to take a walk on the wild side.
To be clear. This book/series is a departure from the author's norm in featuring a paranormal dark romance that doesn't include her usual humorous or lighthearted characters. She dug deep in premising a dark themed edgy story that factors in a mystery-suspense story line. Oh, and this story does end in a cliffhanger.
The main characters. Adara. Logan. Titus. It's a love triangle in a similar fashion as Twilight though that's only a reference example. Personally, I started out all the way on Team Logan..... but Titus showed his colors so Team Titus fan..... until Logan went and did what he did so back to Team Logan and then some ... but then Titus goes and did what HE did so Team Titus for the win. You get the drift. The author made it all but impossible to pick one guy over the other. I kept screaming "why does she have to choose, can't she have both?" more often than not. Yup. This is when I say you're going to have to read this book to find out which guy got the girl, maybe. lol. I say that because there are more installments to come. Things could change.
The secondary characters. The author made this a mystery-suspense read so I'm going to avoid naming names as it would be spoiler info. I couldn't help myself because one character really got my blood boiling and it's lucky I this fictional world wasn't a real place because I'd definitely be making a road trip to take care of the issue myself as it's obvious the men in this story suck when it comes to the whole Sherlock Holmes side of things.
While I detest cliffhangers that leave me waiting for the next release, this story was so damn awesome that I'm ok to impatiently wait - so not. I want the next installment Awake In Shadows, and I want it now. So need to find out what lies ahead for Adara.
This is a book that dark romance paranormal fans should check out. I do want to point out this book is a departure from the author's other works as it is dark (I know I'm repeating myself but fans of this author need to know this info) themed and does include subject matter that may push comfort zones. The other thing I want to include, for those who have a need to know regarding the actual romance level, this book does not include adult content intimacy/erotica. Any reviewer who says it does is lying. Doesn't mean future installments won't as this author does include graphic adult content, I'm just saying that the romance between whichever main characters hook up hasn't progressed to that level, yet.
This is the first of her books that I have ever actively disliked. Some spoilers - First of all it ends on a cliff hanger??? WHAT is the deal with that!!! I hate cliffhangers and I do not buy Kindle books except to read a complete story beginning, middle, and end and most important a HEA!!! Normally this would not be an issue because I don't buy those kinds of books but I have never read one of her books before that ended in this manner and I was NOT expecting it. Second, I can handle the potential love triangle although personally I would much rather each get their own girl, but like I said, that aspect is not that big a deal except again in the way this story just ends. like falling off a cliff and the screen goes blank. The writing was a good as ever, however, the story was a little too convoluted to follow easily. We the reader are as in the dark as the characters themselves and there are hints given that are never explained in the end so you are just left hanging.... again can you tell I have issues with cliffhangers lol. I feel like I became too invested in the story and characters only to be abandoned without any resolution or explanation and that actually made me a little annoyed. (First book since Nicolas Sparks that actually made me mad - he is evil personified to me).
Then there is the whole issue of how dark this story got. Holy cow that was dark and evil and too disturbing to even think about. And sorry, there is not book magic in the world that could heal/cure make the main character even partially sane after her experience so there is no way I can believe that this character can find any real resolution to her situation. Also, I assumed it was a were/vampire story, but there are elements that hint that this is more of a mockery of Christianity than a fairy tale romance. So, I am out. No more of these books for me. I hate that because I have all of her other books concerning space and weres. I love her writing, even though I always stayed away from the demon and hell stories, but now it seems like she is combining the two and I have no interest in reading that sort of thing. And I am very very sorry to have to write this because I love this author, but this is was way out of my comfort zone. So sorry Eve.
This was okay at best. The story was unoriginal. That would have been alright if the characters had been interesting. I never really connected with them although if I had to pick a favorite it would be Logan. It would have been better if more of it had been from Adara's POV. Most of it was from Logan and Titus's POV. Their thoughts were repetitive at times and focused too much on their feelings for Adara. IMO the focus should have been on the mystery of who and what Adara is.
Adara attracted attention from a variety of supernatural creatures. There wasn't anything special about her personality; it all had to do with her magic. It was boring that people were drawn to her for inexplicable reasons.
The love triangle irritated me. Logan and Titus were instantly attracted to Adara. She was somewhat interested in them but was afraid of them most of the time. All of them grew closer over the course of the book but never truly got the chance to know each other. Usually I prefer vampires to werewolves but that wasn't the case here. Logan was more interesting and more protective. Titus was boring. The only benefit to having him around was that he was better at gathering information. Quite frankly I don't care who she ends up with.
Also I don't know why this book came with a warning that it's dark. Horrible things happened to Adara in the past, but they weren't described in graphic detail. I've read dark books, and I don't consider this to be one. This disappointed me enough that I won't be reading the next one.
Great start to a new series. A dark urban fantasy, with Zombies, Lycans, Vampires, necromancers and demons. Adara is a frail women plagued by nightmares, black outs and amnesia. Logan is a lycan alpha, leader of his pack. He and his wolf are drawn to Adara, after saving her from a zombie attack. He doesn't know what she is, she's not human and not any other paranormal being that he knows. He is determined to protect her. Titus is an old and powerful vampire, master of the city. He is drawn to Adara through her nightmares. He doesn't know what she is, and like Logan, he has a need to protect her. Both Logan and Titus are falling for Adara, as they help her recover her memories. They have more questions than answers. It seems she is cursed, bound by powerful magic and powerful beings want to use her or destroy her. Adara is drawn to both Logan and Titus. She sees the danger she brings to them. To keep them safe she has to leave them behind. The story ends in a cliffhanger, and a betrayal. Can't wait for the next book.
Adara wakes in the hospital after having sustained horrible injuries but she has amnesia and doesn't remember who she is or how she got hurt. The doctor puts her in the mental hospital and somehow messes with her mind and puts her on medication. After a while the doctor sets her up in a run down apartment and a job in a bad neighborhood. He makes her call him all the time to check in and he keeps track of her but it's not because he cares.
Logan is a werewolf and the head of his pack. He's out patrolling one night when he realizes a zombie is attacking someone in a store so he steps in and dispatches with the zombie. He's not sure whether to kill the human girl or not but once he gets close to her, all thoughts of killing her go out the door. He helps her and follows her home to make sure she's alright. But more zombies attack her so he brings her to his house.
Titus is a vampire and the cabal leader. He can hear Adara's cries for help when she's asleep and having horrific nightmares. He rushes to Logan's house only to find that Logan has somehow been pulled into Adara's nightmare, literally. Once she's awake and they realize that she's suffered horrible pain at the hands of others they decide to work together to find out who and what Adara is because she's not entirely human.
I liked the premise of the story but it was a little slow to begin and there isn't much to this story. I can see there's going to be a love triangle between these three but there's really no spark between them. Titus and Logan don't like each other and are fighting to win her in their own ways like she's some trophy to win.
And then this book ends in a cliffhanger. This book might tell us what happened to her and by whom but not really why. I didn't like how it ended and it didn't keep me engaged enough to read the next book.
Adara is such an enigma. Beautiful but pitiful, strong, but terrified, broken but... not. This entire story help my attention from the first word and has me near begging for more. What happened to her? WHY is she forsaken? WHO is she really? And that epilogue! I’m dying to learn more! Very well written, creative, and different from all the others, Eve Langlais has delivered the first in a promising new series, and I’m already hooked!
Follow the golden light I am not usually one for serial books, but this is a growing story that can only get better. The author did a fantastic job of creating characters we have to see through to their HEA. Does Adara end up with the vampire, the wolf, both, alone? Will the nightmares never end? Who is the strong golden beauty in her dreams? Don’t ask me! I’m waiting for the next book to find out myself. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next!
I’ve been a huge fan of Eve Langlais for many years now, I think it goes back to like 2010 or so. I’ve read so many books by Eve (according to Goodreads, I’ve read 67 of her books, but some might be different editions of the same book, like print versus audiobook). Anyway, I really like Eve (and she’s even more fun in person. If you can go to a book con she’s at, please do look her up, you won’t regret it).
Eve Langlais is one of my top go-to authors when I want a laugh. Imagine my surprise when I go to Goodreads to add this book to my TBR list and I see a bold warning at the top of the blurb; “Warning: This dark urban fantasy contains scenes of violence. Reader discretion is advised.” This struck me as odd and made me even more interested in trying this book. I’m a big fan of dark stories (I seem to go from dark and depressing to hilarious stories. They seem to balance each other out). I couldn’t wait to see what my funny author would do with a dark story.
Adara has amnesia. She is recently out of the hospital and in living in a bad area and working in a worse one, during the evening shift closing the comic book by herself. It is almost as if someone is trying to get her killed. Then she gets attacked by zombies. Luckily, a certain alpha werewolf comes to clean up the zombie mess and saves her.
Logan, the above mentioned alpha werewolf, has an instant and strange attraction to Adara. His wolf is very interested. But he’s also very interested in finding out who she is. She doesn’t share much information. He is also very hesitant to show her what he is.
Titus is a master vampire. He hears Adara’s mental cries of agony when she’s sleeping and having nightmares. He knows she’s not fully human, but has no idea what she is. He also knows he can’t bear her mental cries.
There is also the hint of romance. Nothing has really started yet, as the first priority is to get Adara out of trouble. But there is definitely something there. The question becomes, which man will win her over (or will she end up with both. It wouldn’t be the first time for Eve to have more than two people in a relationship together). There is a strong battle between Logan and Titus and jealousy too.
So, this story is much darker than Eve’s normal stories (but not as dark as many of the other stories I’ve read, but I think the warning is good for people who are used to this author). She really has me intrigued with this story. We learn a lot about Adara throughout the book, but I think it ends with more questions than what we learn. I must learn more.
Narration This is my first book with Amy Melissa Bentley. I have to say she’s done a great job. The cast isn’t very large, but she did very well with the mostly male cast. She gave a good performance with the dark topics and really put the emotions of the characters in their voice. Her pace and tone were well done. I would listen to her again and will continue this series on audio.
**I like to thank the publisher for providing me with a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
Logan O'Conaill, the Alpha of his pack and a wold shifter found a badly injured a beautiful woman while he was out patrolling his city one night. He knew she was attacked by a zombie. He was also drawn to her in a way he had never been before. His inner animal claimed her as theirs.
Adara woke up to find herself with horrific injuries in the hospital with no recollection of what happened to her. She didn't know who she was or what she was, all she had were nightmares that gave her some clues.
But when she was awake, she forgot the horrific dreams. Not knowing about her past didn't stop danger from lurking around her. There were a werewolf and a vampire that kept coming around her. She didn't know what that meant but she was willing to find out.
Titus Damnounus, the Cabal leader and a Vampire who'd heard Adara's desperate cries for help along with Logan. Both men wondered what on the world was happening. They were intrigued by the enigma that was Adara. Together they worked to find out who their mystery woman was.
She found out about Logan's inner beast. She wasn't as scared as he thought she would be, she took things pretty well considering all she'd been through. She also found out about Titus, both men appointed themselves her protectors. They lost their hearts to her as well.
Someone was definitely after Adara but Logan and Tirus wasn't about to let the evildoer get his hands on her, come what may. She might be broken but she wasn't going to sit on the sideline.
Logan and Titus made a life changing decision that send her running away from. Not out of fear but because she wanted to keep them safe from her past.
DREAMS OF DARKNESS is the first book in Eve Langlais' THE FORSAKEN CHRONICLES series. It was mind-blowing, intriguing, fast-paced and one heck of a rollercoaster ride.
The author definitely has my attention! This book was such a tease.
That's the only way I can describe what I feel about this book. It was interesting in the way a prelude to a story is intriguing. Albeit, a very very long prelude, but a prelude, nonetheless.
Adara, the FMC has amnesia, and is plagued by nightmares. Her life began after she woke up in a hospital with injuries beyond anything a human could imagine. Then there was the psych ward before settling in a decrepit apartment with a horrible job. She meets the most boring vampire and werewolf who happen to be drawn to her. Love triangle ✅. Then danger plus mystery drives the quest to unravel Adara's past.
This was the entirety of the plot. Spanning the length of the book. I will admit that it got repetitive and boring, cause I kept waiting for the main story. Something to tie it all in or make me care, or someone to at least get vengeance on, or even a guy to root for.
I was waiting for the things we readers wait for... the who, the what, the why, and the implications of such a cover-up. The cruelty to Adara had to make sense.
And yes, I was waiting for the true danger, the real character development and more in-depth interaction with the characters, and the world. Necromancers, succubi, were wolves and demons. Give me more! Tell me about species interaction, politics and the catatonic implications of this darkness.
I called this a prelude because discovering her past and identity wasn't the main story. I got the impression it was setting the stage for a bigger plot of betrayal, love, action, and many many dangerous things, possibly the end of the world.
I'm guessing the next installment is where the real plot will begin.
The author better bring it because the true injustice to readers would be to read an overly long prelude to a plot that falls so flat.
A dark and gripping tale of a woman with no past, a werewolf who craves her, and a vampire who desires her. Adara is on her own, holding down a barely-getting-by job at night in a bad part of town; living in an apartment that should have been torn down years ago. She remembers the institution she was in, and she remembers the doctor who is still helping her – but is helping her to remember or to forget?
Logan keeps the streets safe in his town. He is the local wolf pack alpha, and the denizens of the street know better than to mess with him. One night, he happens upon a zombie about to take a bite out of Adara. From that point, he’s hooked. She smells so wonderful, but what is she? He needs to find out, but first he must keep her safe.
Titus can hear Adara screaming in her dreams, and he wants to help the beautiful woman. His vampiric nature allows him to help in a way that Logan can’t – but the two of them need to work together to keep her safe and unlock her memories. What is making her forget?
A departure from this author’s normal light-hearted romance novels, I wasn’t sure if I would like it or not. However, it does deliver on the promise of action-packed adventure. Dreams of Darkness takes us deep into Adara’s troubled past in order to prepare her for her future. It might be too dark for some readers, but there is that “light at the end of the tunnel” feeling; and you know that Adara will come out on top by the end of the series (at least she better!) There is no HEA just yet, but there is hope. And I still can’t wait for the next book to come out!
Adara has lost her memory, treated in an asylum and then allowed entrance into the world. Her mind tells her to forget the weird and unusual and every night she dreams of terror so great it leaves her mentally scared. Until a wolf and a vampire enter her life and change it completely, for better or worse is yet to be seen.
This book is darker than other books written Eve Langlais and discretion is advised for readers who can suffer triggers. However that being said I absolutely loved it. There’s angst and terror and zombies. It’s full on from the moment you open the book until the open ended ending. I was sucked in from the first chapter and wanted more at the ending.
Dreams of Darkness, wow what a book Not knowing who she is, Adara (a nurse named her) has amnesia. Nightly her sleep is filled with gruesome nightmares. She is timid and afraid of everything, constantly telling herself that every terrifying thing is not real, she imagine it. A must read for fantasy, action, and mystery lovers.👍
This is a very engrossing, very dark read. This is a great dark urban fantasy novel with a few bits of humor sprinkled throughout. This has the potential of a love triangle, but this book is not a romance. Heed the author warning, this is not for the light hearted.
I am voluntarily leaving an unbiased, honest review.
A brillant read by eve, fantastic characters that draw you into their story, a brillant storyline that keeps you hooked till the end with plenty of drama, action and romance and amazing world building

I’ll admit it, I didn’t read the blurb before starting this book, and part of me was happy about that. As the story unfolded, as the mysteries built, and the characters encountered new problems, I was right there with them. The seemingly omniscience of Titus is called into doubt by the end. The infallibility of Logan, flawed at pivotal points. Adara, we learn why she is, but not who, and her pain radiates at us, and is completely justified. Dark and evil things lurk and grab, and it is infiltrated deeper than expected, as we shockingly find out in the ending. But strength is there as well, because the pain doesn’t break, and forgetting doesn’t heal, and enough is enough, and it is time to fight back!
This book is definitely different from many of this author's light-hearted paranormal HEA's. It also ends on a cliff-hanger as it is only part 1, so if that is not your thing then wait until the series is complete. With that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the story drew me right in. There are so many questions as to what the heroine, Adara, actually is, but the sense of an innate formidable strength has me rooting for her just the same. There are things not right with her though and it all starts with her not knowing who she is or having any significant memory at all. Also, there are zombies after her and that is where her two sexy protectors come in. First, there is Logan, a wolf shifter who encounters her during her first zombie attack and is inexplicably drawn to her, the man as well as the wolf inside. Then, there is Titus, a centuries old vampire who is also drawn to her and vows to protect her despite not feeling attraction like this in many years, if ever. The two men must find a way to work together to protect her, despite each wanting her for themselves. But, there is much more at play then the potential for a menage between the three, because there are demonic and otherworldly forces that want Adara out of the way. And it appears that a minor character in this book has paved the way for that to happen in the next. I can't wait to see who, and what, Adara really is, but I hope she can find it in her heart to love both Logan and Titus despite their different natures. Looking forward to book 2!

I don't often write reviews but I keep thinking about this book so wanted to write something.
Overall I enjoyed the book but I won't know fully if I'll follow the series until the next book.
This one ended almost as a cliffhanger leaving "who" and "what" the main character Adara is unresolved. Not really a fan of that type of ending - but know it does happen so not the end of the world.
Characters are well written as always with Eve Langlais, however I'm slightly concerned about the love triangle we have emerging. I'm not particularly a fan of those - especially if they end up carrying from book to book - then it gets annoying as you will undoubtedly have a preference as to whom she should be with and want it sorted out. Also it's possible she'll end up involved with both men - and then that takes the story in a completely different direction - again not sure I'm interested in that.
So overall enjoyed the story and now have the long wait until March for the next chapter after which I'll know whether or not I'll want to continue with the series.
Nothing happens in this book. The main character, Adara, has amnesia. The book starts out with her meeting a werewolf and vampire. None of them know who or what Adara really is. They don’t know why people are after her, and they don’t know why they’re inexplicably attracted to her. The story ends with none of these questions answered. In the three hundred pages between nothing and nothing the two men try to protect her from the same incident happening four times in various locations. That’s the whole story. That’s what I did with 9 hours of my life.
Suffering from a horrendously tragic attack on her body and psyche, this young amnesiac seemed to be the target of every evil plot of the book. Half riddles are provided by each villain/champion amounting to only her faulty returning memory and an inner sense to determine who was friend or foe. Gotta get the next one in the series. Eve has done it again come up with a quirky combo in a new “worldscape”.
I thought this premise sounded interesting, and others might really enjoy the story but I didn't because 1) I found the characters & writing cliched 2) I thought the mention of sexual violence was gratuitous & 3) I don't have quite high enough an endearment tolerance to read "honey" and "dearest" so many damn times in one novel.
Wow!! Although this book didn't have this author's usual funny side to her story, it was so riveting and suspenseful. The strength of the characters and their personalities will draw you into the story and make you feel you are part of the scene. Great!! Loved it!!
