The Second Evangelical Awakening

Rate this book
Originally published in 1955, this book by Dr. J. Edwin Orr combines and simpli es his two larger works on the great spiritual awakening in the United States in 1857-58 and in Great Britain in 1859-60. This history of this remarkable work of God can continue to instruct and inspire a present generation regarding real revival and spiritual awakening. J. Edwin Orr (1912-1987) was a renowned scholar, preacher, and participant in true Christian revival and spiritual awakening. The great scholar F.F. Bruce rightly said of Dr. “Some men read history, some write it, and others make it. So far as the history of religious revivals is concerned, J. Edwin Orr belongs to all three categories.”

Revival

America’s roots were watered with revivals. Our foundation was developed through the Reformation. The Great Awakening of the 1700s came and carried us through the Revolution. The Second Evangelical Awakening carried us through the Civil War and into the 20th Century. Yet few Christians know about it. This book is based on research and presents the power of the Spirit of God to move in the hearts of people. The author shows how some 2 million turned to Jesus in the 1850-60and this revival impacted the English speaking world for the next 50 years both in Britain and the US. In the current times, as tumultuous as they are, this book presents light in the darkness. Important read for both lay and pastors alike. Pray for a revival in our times.
