This biography of a movement and the teen activists behind it delves into the quest for gun safety legislation in light of the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
A nonfiction book is a piece of writing about a real event or fact that has happened to somebody. Many people like to read nonfiction books because you can gain more knowledge on what has happened. The book #Never Again by David and Lauren Hogg is a nonfiction book about an up-close view of a school shooting. These two siblings in high school survived the attack. The events are brought up to bring more attention to gun violence.
The book #Never Again was very inspiring and had a great structure. This story is an autobiography that has a powerful impact on many lives. With both points of view from the siblings, they had great confidence in telling the story. David was a senior in high school, after the shooting he went back to the school to tell the reporters what happened. Lauren was just a freshman, she felt so much grief for all of her friends who died. “Our first job now is to remember. Our second job is to act. Remember, act, repeat”(Hogg, 2018, p.3). Numerous details made you feel like you were there for the shooting. It brings attention to being more aware of gun violence.
There are a few lousy aspects of the book. The tone would often come across as too heavy. A tone can set the whole mood for the story. When reading it, I thought there were some points where there would be more depth at one spot, and then not at much depth at other parts. One spot that stood out that could have had more depth was when they talked about their feelings. The fear, grief, and anger that they felt would have been a great touch to add. “So we stood up and tried to make our voices heard”(Hogg, 2018, p. 128).
“We had to make the world a better place now”(Hogg, 2018, p. 128). This story wants you to be aware of gun violence. They take a stance in making people know they have a voice and can change the world. If you want to take a stance in making the world a better place, this book is perfect for you. It helps you learn to be more aware of gun violence
