Matthew Johnstone is a passionate mental health and wellbeing advocate. He's an author, illustrator, photographer, public speaker and is also the creative director at the Black Dog Institute. He lives in Sydney Australia with his wife and two daughters.
I took a seminar on resilience once and I remember buying this book when I was in a bad place a few years ago.
Reading it now, I must say it felt pretty 'empty'. The illustrations were cute but the content - not so. The book told you about the goals you should aim for but didnt tell you about the tools to actually get there.
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. For already depressed people someone telling them 'go outside and do 30 minutes of sports' feels pretty empty when 1. their whole issue is getting out of bed in the morning 2. they already know that most of the time. And for people without depression: they also already know (and do) that or think they don't need it.
And: I feel like I get 'more' from following any positivity blog on tumblr - for free!

I loved this self help book, I felt inspired and uplifted within just a few pages! It's ideas are simplistic and most are common sense BUT it never hurts to be reminded once in a while. The illustrations added a touch of humour that I found simply charming. Kudos.
A friend recommended this, and it's a good little book. I've probably covered most of it already and gone past the point it is aimed it, but still a nice resource.
Another nicely illustrated book about mental health by Matthew Johnstone. Unfortunately it never reaches the quality of his BLACK DOG books. While they were a help even in the darkest of places, this one might feel empty to someone in that position. Don't get me wrong, it offers valuable suggestions. It's just a book that is rather aimed at people who are in less trouble, offering a more generalized advice. So if you're already know the general outlines of resilience, you can skip this one. And if you're in a bad situation, you might rather find help in the BLACK DOG books.
Resilience can help us cope with life better, and may even help prevent depression. This short, nicely illustrated book outlines some of the strategies to become more resilient. Although it is very short, it is the kind of book that I like to read bit by bit over a couple of weeks.
It is truly helpful powered by completely useful photos. Can be read in one session and can help both students and adults who are struggling with communicating with people and who have low self-esteem.
I really enjoyed this little book with its humorous illustrations and helpful advice. It is quite short though and some of the advice was just common sense.

Ein wahnsinnig wichtiges Thema, das in diesem Büchlein anschaulich, liebevoll und wertschätzend behandelt wird. Ich kann es nur jedem, den diese Thematik beschäftigt, nur wärmstens ans Herz legen.
Ein super tolles Buch! Die Bilder sind anschaulich und so schön dargestellt. Jedes einzelne Bild hat mir gut gefallen. Ich konnte es an einem Tag lesen. Hier sind die Strategien auch total schön dargestellt und das Buch ist motivierend geschrieben.
This is a useful little book full of common sense, good advice and entertaining illustrations BUT I wish Mr Johnstone hadn't included dietary advice without consulting the experts. "Fresh and natural diet" sounds good. However, there is absolutely no basis in science for recommending a detox diet or cutting out the healthier dairy products. He recommends that the reader should "put some time into researching the best approach" but he could have saved us the trouble of wading through the masses of dietary misinformation that surrounds us with the simple instruction to avoid refined carbs and saturated fat and eat lots of vegetables, some fruit, healthy Omega-3 fats, probiotics, whole grains, lean protein and occasional small treats.
I absolutely love this book. The combination between the text and illustrations makes it not only an fun read, which you can adapt to your everyday life, but also a beautiful book to look at. I've read it a couple times over the last few months and it gives you not only some honest truths, but also great ways to cope with them.
Johnstone is a genius. I was pleasantly surprised to find so many original ideas and refreshing new ways to express well established ideas. His illustrations are witty and thought provoking. World class.
A charming little book that will uplift and inspire you. It was a pleasure to read, even though some of the ideas are common sense, it never hurts to be reminded. Kudos.
