The dead are gone but yet they speak... Five years before I ever met Trent Lemend, before what happened to me in the house on County Road 118, I did a horrible thing. On one hand, it was mostly an accident. On the other, I didn't have a choice, and I acted as anyone would have. Or did I? I'm still not one hundred percent sure about that part. I thought I'd buried the past, but after all these years my actions are coming back to bite me. A stranger is stalking me, threatening me at work - and not only me, but one of my real estate clients - and the police can't identify him. Even Trent, the man who saved me from certain death last winter, is acting strangely like he knows more than he's saying. Just when I think I may have put a few pieces together, there's another fire. And I think it might be connected to the terrible thing I did.
J. writes because she loves the universal resonance of stories and the lessons they teach us about human nature. She thinks it’s amazing that people from all over the world can relate to the fictional characters in books written by authors they’ve never met. It’s something she never gets tired of creating for others or experiencing herself. When J.’s not dreaming up new problems to throw at her unsuspecting characters, she disappears on long walks, animal watches, or finds new books to read. She lives in the southern US with her brilliant husband and a cat who eats too many lizards.
A wonderful story that has me captivated and turned into a real page turner. The story revolves around Aria, who breaks up with her boyfriend but then get paid a visit from his older brother claiming she was sleeping around and decides to rape her, but that doesn't end well for him as Aria kills him. Aria is great stricken and end up dating her for a few years. After breaking up with her boyfriend again, he snaps and kidnaps her and her step mom, where he beats, rapes and torture her. All this happens within the first few chapters! The story has many twists and turns as well as secrets that has Aria questioning her own sanity as the ghosts of her past seem to be haunting her in different ways, many will keep you guessing as well. I highly recommend this one
This is a pumping page turner. Aria has had some horrific things happen to her and his constantly dogged by her own role in them, whether real or imagined. It’s made it hard for her to move on. When a sinister figure approaches her at her job, she immediately connects him to her past, but she can’t figure out how he could know the things he says he knows. Aria has a burgeoning relationship with Trent but they both find it difficult to get past the things that have happened to them.
I flew threw this book, really wanting to find out what was going on. I found Aria’s attempts to make sense of a brutal world really compelling. I was gut wrenched from the start when she went against her own instincts in going back with her ex-boyfriend and I really enjoyed how her sense of self evolved through the story.
Another excellent read. This book was as equally gripping as the first one. This time the story is told through Aria’s eyes and much is explained about what occurred on County Road 118. The beginning grabs you and pulls you into this page-turner. It is harrowing but necessary. Then we’re back with Trent and Aria having to solve a number of other mysteries, all of which are interconnected. I was kept wondering who were the good guys and who were bad until the last few chapters and then came the unexpected twist. I was wondering if the author is planning more books with the two main characters. I will be keeping watch. I don’t want to say too much in case I drop a spoiler and ruin it for future readers. You will just have to find out for yourselves. A highly recommended page-turner.
Excellent story telling by J Conrad - a gripping thriller. Ok, from the off set I have to say I don't normally read thrillers or horrors, and for good reason, they scare me and I can't sleep. I only picked this up because it was recommended to me, as soon as it started I was like 'Oh no, this isn't for me' this is not a story for the faint-hearted. But... what makes an excellent story teller? I believe it is the ability to keep the reader turning the pages no matter what, and that is certainly what this author accomplished in this book. I had to keep reading despite my initial dismay, nay shock. Bravo, and hats off to J Conrad for making this gripping thriller un-put-downable! ps I was very glad I stayed to the end, very satisfying ending.
I was absolutely taped to the pages of this book. I rarely read these kinds of stories as I simply prefer Fantasy, but something about this one caught my interest and maybe it was the utterly saturating style of this book or maybe the twisting of stories within the story that appealed to me, but I thoroughly enjoyed it! Aria is so plausible. She is both a victim and a hero, and so well-written that I felt like I knew her fears and hopes like my own. This book is vivid in every respect, it has gutwrenching suspense, mystery and murder - and even if you don't usually read this sort of thing, I urge you to give it a go. Someone should make this into a film.
Almost Dead is a page-turning thrill ride from the get go. The writing is powerful, detailed and intense. I started the series with this book, and so was unaware of the events in the previous book. This book reviews those events for the first couple chapters, and it gets a little rocky for a bit, especially for someone new to the series. But it works itself out after a while. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed it, and didn't see the ending coming. As soon as I finished it, I actually immediately bought the first book, and was just as sucked in. Fun story, I totally recommend it.
Not for the faint hearted, this brilliant read has graphic scenes from the outset, all which set up the atmosphere for the rest of this startling thriller. Loved how the story went back before going forwards but without revealing any more than necessary. Great scene descriptions as well as an excellent insight into the mind of a victim...The self doubt, the fear, the insecurity, and ultimately the triumph! Good, gritty writing that holds nothing back and keeps the reader turning the pages. An excellent read!
If you like gritty thrillers, this is for you. The opening chapters are compelling, setting the scene extremely well, giving a background and purpose for Aria's story and growth. The author describes the tiniest of details about her characters and scenes in such a way as to give extra depth and realism to the plot. There are a number of detailed descriptions of violence in the book, so be warned, but I felt these were essential to the plot and development of the characters, and the book would have been weaker without them.
Not just a thriller This is one read I thoroughly enjoyed immensely. Aria’s story captured my attention from the first line and held it until the last word. I was fascinated as her personality transformed and grew out of her fears. Aria and Trent were both intriguing and complex. The author did a remarkable job describing them. This book is not only a very well-written thriller that keeps the reader glued to the page, but it’s also full of human emotions that are beautifully written. This is a definite five stars must-read book that I’d highly recommend.
I thought the first book was really good, and couldn't wait to read this one. Well, this one I couldn't put down. It was simply fantastic. There were so many levels to it, and I'm normally pretty good at figuring out the 'who' pretty early on then I just have to sit back and watch the story unfold, but that didn't happen this time. I was kept guessing almost all the way through. Well written, well edited, and a simply fantastic read.
Characters are acting strangely in this 2nd book of a series. If you can guess who the villain is, give yourself a pat on your back. Short book for a quick read when you ront want to dive into a long book with. Deeply explained characters. Please read the 1st book before reading this one.
