"You spent so long creating villains and demons and nightmares in your head that you eventually became one."
This book sounded so intriguing. I absolutely adored the idea and couldn't wait to read about this messed up mystery. I had heard such amazing things about this on Wattpad, so you could say I was really excited to read this book.
It really started with a bang. Strong, mysterious and confronting. The loss of a best friend is a topic that is really close to me, so it really hit me as well. I thought the way Elliot felt was written really well and I had to wipe away some tears.
After a while, that excitement began to fade away. It was still interesting, but not as page-turning as I'd hoped it would be. The book didn't read as a mystery at some times, which was a bit disappointing. I still enjoyed reading it though; Olivia Harvard has a nice writing style.
The thing I missed a bit in this book, was some more depth to the characters. This definitely reads like a plot-driven book and personally, I tend to enjoy character-driven books more. I didn't feel attached to any of the characters and they just didn't have that many character traits I could name right now. It wasn't done badly, but I would've really enjoyed some more attachment to them.
At that point, this book was feeling like a 3.5 star read. But, I was getting closer to the end. I had a lot of theories and I was invested in the mystery, especially since I'd heard about an amazing plot twist coming up! I'll have to admit that I was expecting something mind-blowing, but I've never felt this led down before.
I literally dropped my phone when I read the chapter of the plot twists (plural!) and that was not a positive thing in this case. Maybe it was something personal because a lot of people seem to think it actually was mind-blowing, but I felt...betrayed? It was like such a low thing to do in my opinion and I was really, really frustrated!
So yeah, that took a while to get over. While reading, I was just screaming to the book: 'Are you serious?!' I was, in fact, that frustrated with it that I considered giving it only 1.5 stars, but I got a little more realistic and eventually (kinda) forgave the book for doing this to me.
Confessions about Colton is a bit of a disappointment, but I'm still glad I picked it up. It was well written, had a strong beginning and a lot of potential throughout the book. The plot twist just wasn't something I was very happy with (oops). I think I will eventually pick up a physical copy and reread this book, but for now I really need to calm down.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with this e-arc.
Extending my deepest gratitude to NetGalley and Wattpad Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. However, this does not affect any opinions or feedback stated concerning the book whatsoever.
"Words are weapons, utilized to inflict the most excruciating pain and present the most beautiful of pleasures."
This book surely packs in a lot of heat, permeates a deliciously foreboding undertone, holds anyone captive to its winding yet simplistic beauty.
To think that this was outlined, pieced together and rendered a life of its own by a 14-year old (I believe so at the time) spurs a mark of vast admiration from my humdrum 22 years of drawing breath on earth. Although this book has its ups and downs and few inconsistencies, it still managed to put together a high-stakes thriller that never for once paused or faltered at a certain point nor swayed from what it promises to be, just by looking at what it is all about.
"That was the thing about destroying something: you couldn’t piece it back together perfectly."
Ms. Harvard surely knows how to deliver an explosive ending yet I still cannot help but feel like it was done ever so forcibly. For one, I had to suspend my disbelief just to fully wrap my head around the huge reveal and come to terms with it as it is. In all honesty, I think that is where the story lacked. Aside from it being impractical, the settings, events and characters, as much as I loved them and cheered for them, fell meager in depth in terms of vigor, personality and flavor.
Then there are also those segments that are disjointed, jumping from one scene to the next without so much as a tip-off. In line with this, the writing can be seriously off-putting at times due to excessive usage of lightweight gestures and fiddling sentiments such as shrugging, constantly having a lump in the throat, heart beating madly, stomach knotting and the likes whenever caught in dire situations plus the handling of unvarying terms like the word 'deeming' was not properly overseen and modified. I am merely saying this book could have been so much more than what it is, like it was just completely abandoned by its editor and the whole task of publishing was solely entrusted to the author herself.
"Happiness should be treasured, especially when you’re going through a tough time."
Though it is to my utter comprehension this is not the published edition, I have no doubt in my mind these matters will be overlooked just as the first time and will end up exactly like the same. Had such texts and certain sections gone emended and passed through the more polishing process, the overall impact of the narrative could have gone smoothly and way differently so much so it ought to come off as memorable and the storytelling as natural and plush as it could be.
"The sentiments of a cleverly crafted speech have the potential to get tattooed to our memories, and sometimes that kind of trauma is harder to heal from than a mere bullet wound."
But in spite of all those concerns, the prose cannot be held in such contempt for what it lacks in zeal and iridescence in writing, it makes up in its number of daring action scenes. Wild as they are, the riskier the more rousing the book gets to be and as far as I am concerned, that is how one can decipher a potentially sterling novel from that of the abysmal one, if it is tight in keeping ahold of one's interest and producing insurmountably extensive feelings and emotions that one feels they are already part of the story. That is how I look at my experience with this particular piece of writing.
"We place our trust in the ones we love, and sometimes those circumstances have the most hurtful outcomes."
Finally after spacing out for a while to give the book much thought, I arrive to the inference that I neither am disappointed nor exhilarated by the book in general. If anything, it is just another one of those stories I have had the liberty to enjoy while it lasted as well as the fun experience that went with it.
If you are looking for a young adult mystery with just the right amount of rush and riddles to pass the time during this season, go on, pick this up and finally have a taste of what you are craving for.
"The last stage of grief was acceptance, and I was on the road to recovery."
“They only had one size,” Colton said, grinning. He lowered his leg back down. “Now my favorite people are with me wherever I go.” “We’re already with you wherever you go,” Lydia pointed out. “It’s true. This relationship is a tricycle now, what with all my third-wheeling all the time,” I teased. I had discovered this book a while back when I had first joined Wattpad. It came back to me while I was looking through another book on Goodreads. I liked the little of it I read and so I decided to give it a chance now. Well, where do I begin? It was a good read. It had its fair share of glory. But the characters felt kinda flat. Especially, Eliot. It seemed he had nothing better to do other than sneaking out & try to catch a killer. But the plot. It was gold. The plot saved the story. It reminded me why I am always drawn to crime, thriller & mystery fictions. It was intricate & well-delivered. As said, well developed characters & well-written plot don’t go hand in hand. I suppose this was one of those.
I liked the main character but the mystery got boring to me at about 50% of the way through. The concept sounded interesting but I don't think it was executed very well.
Edit: 4-20-20 (kinda spoiler-y) I only have three things to say. (2.5 stars rounded down).
1. The main plot did not change: it is still about Colton. However, in the Wattpad version, they don’t outright say he was murdered. I loved that aspect of it. And they don’t have the weird main character part where he knew Colton wouldn’t kill himself and such.
There were more changes, but I don’t want to outright make a spoiler review. You do learn this within a reasonable amount of the beginning.
2. While I have read this book on Wattpad, it was when I was a young teen, and it hadn’t had an ending so I never got to the middle of it, waiting hopefully until it did so I wouldn’t be stuck waiting chapter-by-chapter. That’s how good the writing and mystery was and still sort of is.
3. The ending hurt. After so many years and this to reminisce with, I didn’t like the changes and perhaps that is why the ending didn’t stick well with me. It felt rushed and like a soap opera twist: too much excitement and thus too much to believe. No one is that meticulous, that ‘perfect,’ and things don’t just work in people’s favor to that extent where the ending happens. I did really like the book, but I think the past story was full of youth and I was full of awe for the website and authors telling people anything they wanted. I still hold this to my Wattpad heart, but this version, it wasn’t for me.
You guys. Wattpad books is a publishing company and from my teen times on there years ago, this picture represents my Wattpad times.
There was no difference between the copyright page and the writing itself. I know it’s an ebook and I love that books can be so readily available, but it just reminds me of the time I had on the site. Ahhhh, good times. Honestly, the writing was so good though. It was mysterious, not too detailed when slow, and detailed when faster paced. I loved how colloquial it could be for a mystery novel. I honestly am stoked for this.
YOU GUYS! I completely forgot about this being a Wattpad book and when I requested this one Netgalley, I knew it sounded familiar! I never finished this on Wattpad, so I am ready to finish this one after my exams!
I was gifted an ebook copy of this book in advance in exchange for a review. These are my honest feelings. Thank you Netgalley, Colourlessness and Olivia, and Wattpad (because I do not believe I would have been as interested because the writing as I remember it was really good, but the blurb sounds like a typical mystery).
This was my third time reading CAC and I still found myself with chills in parts. This story is just always incredible. The twists and depth of the plot is one of my favourite things, and the intricacies of the details to the mystery are something that I am so in awe of. I recommend this book to everyone who says they read, and my best friend is currently reading it, and loving it just as much as I do. I can guarantee I will read this again in the future and pass it on to anyone I can!
it took me almost a month to read this book but it was so damn worth it! i always feel proud when i buy a book which was first published on wattpad and honestly, this one is so good! and what a plot-twist actually, i never though of this! anyway, i gonna start the third boon of PJO because i really need something more joyful and PJO never failed for making me laugh!
I think this book has some of the best dialogue I have read in a while, I found myself smirking as I was turning pages and it made me feel a part of the mystery. Olivia is the Australian Karen Mcmanus, I am calling it now!
This book is so hard to rate because I was loving it up until the reveal.
“Confessions About Colton” weaves together a story that fans of Pretty Little Liars can enjoy as Elliot finds himself on a scavenger hunt to uncover his best friend’s killer and with each new letter he finds himself questioning everything and with the killer inching closer to home he has to unravel the mystery before it’s too late.
Okay so this book had a lot of fun elements like clever misdirects and an intriguing way of dealing with the grief of losing someone only to realize they weren’t who you thought they were and the fallout of that but once we got to the big moment I couldn’t help but deflate which was only made worse by the fact that everything that followed was well written enough to tie everything up in a satisfying way.
I just genuinely do not understand the motive. The whole argument seems pointless when the person who was supposed to be in the dark was the one who has known the truth for years and it didn’t make sense that the threat of it coming out would push the killer to those extremes. It’s hard not to spoil to fully go into my problems with that decision but there were way too many for it to work for me.
This is a book that manages to be a good mystery but just falls short on delivering the final blow to make it something great.
**special thanks to the publishers and netgalley for providing an arc in exchange for a fair and honest review!**
This was one of the books that I've loved on wattpad and it is great too see it being published. I've loved the story and the killer chase and that remains intact. That said, I don't think much changed in the published version. It was all the same. The thrill was in point although at times it did get boring. Some instances made very little sense and it did seem silly at times. Nevertheless, I think this is one of those good thrillers that has a good start but not a good ending. The ending was sloppy and sad, and just didn't make sense. I feel like there could've been so many alternatives but the author chose a very silly way to end the goose chase. It is well written though, and will surely interest some people. Except the ending, I really enjoy this book!
the story? astounding for wattpad. but the end? what the fuck.
the author def got bored of writing w the kind of ending she wrote (or scribbled bc literally it gave nothing). after allllllllll that buildup, olivia harvard left me very dry
Elliot, 18-years-old, has been friends with Colton for forever, and Elliot knows that Colton is keeping secrets about what happened when Colton disappeared for a while. With Colton back, Elliot hopes that things will go back to normal. But then Elliot finds Colton dead. And the murderer is giving Elliot clues to learn all the secrets Colton was hiding.
The suspense grates on the reader as much as it does on Elliot -- everyone on edge to see how all the clues will come together. However, all the secrets and intrigue were unsatisfying to me in the end because there was no way for the reader to figure out what happened without the explicit confession of the killer. Yes, the identity of the killer lends understanding to the hows and whys, but I was disappointed that the ending felt so abrupt. The mature content rating is for underage drinking as well as mentions of drugs and sex, and the violence rating is for murder, gun use, and mention of abuse.
Vraiment top
A very thrilling book. Simple, easy to understand language. Lots of complications and imaginative twists in the middle. A very heartbreaking ending though, I felt. But enticing definitely. A must read for all mystery lovers.
This book has an amazing plot but I’m really disappointed by the end like ok it was unexpected but idk i feel like it doesn’t really make sense even after everything is explained… and I felt so betrayed!! But the book was great and still got me excited until the end!
This book had a very promising start. The narration was well done, and it was really fast-paced. It built up to a crescendo and then just fizzled into a bizarre ending. I will step back and explain from the beginning. Our narrator Elliot is an intriguing person. He is very realistically portrayed, and it is easy to empathize with him for the most part.
This story, however, is about his friend Colton. Colton vanished in his final school year for a while, and no one knew where. After his untimely death, Elliot gets one letter after another urging him with confessions about Colton's truths and declaring him/herself the killer. What follows is a very tension wrought time with Elliot trying to solve the puzzle without getting into trouble, and things start to get both more apparent and murkier in equal measure. All of this was done very well and increased my expectation of the result because I could not imagine who the culprit could be! Then the ending and the revelations happen, and however, I tried to get my mind around it, I just could not find the train of thought and action believable. In the simple non-spoiler format, I would have to say the killer defeated the purpose of killing Colton by doing what he/she did. This last bit did not let me enjoy the book, but I would still recommend it to others (who are not as picky as me) because the writing and pacing stay consistently good throughout.
I received an ARC of the book in its latest version thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
I received an eARC in exchange for a honest review.
Elliott Parker is Colton Crest, Hampton High's Golden Boy best friend and on the day of his funeral he finds a letter that leads to six other clues that Colton's killer left for him in a twisted game to figure out his identity and his motives. Elliott embark on a mission to get justice for his friend but he has to be careful because his life is also on the line...
The story was original, the ending was totally unexpected and the characters were very well-outlined. I could really feel the suspence and the tension that Elliott felt while trying to uncover Colton's murderer.
I would definitely recommend this book to people who love a good mistery YA novel!
just found this book on my feed but i actually read it 2 years ago. fun story: i started it in like 2019 but dnfed it cause i just couldnt read it bc it was too boring sry lol but then in 2020 i had to pick it up again bc it was a reading for my french class 💀 so i ended up finishing it. the end was legit and i was surprised but i just think it dragged on for too long, it did not need to be that long. but yeah this is a 2020 read
Another one of my wattpad favorites. Cannot believe it's not been published yet. A fantastic thriller with numerous twists and turns to keep you hooked.
