This was surprisingly good. I was drawn by the art style and the cat on the cover, but I just knew this would be an entertaining reading. And oh, man, this was sooo much better than expected!

Nyankees was HILARIOUS. Like I’m-laughing-out-loud-like-a-stupid-person HILARIOUS. And as a cat lover, it was so fun to see such an accurate representation of cats’ behavior. I was laughing and at the next moment I was doing those weird sounds when we see something really cute. Ryuu is fucking cute and I want to hug him! Mii-chan is utterly beautiful too!

Taiga is the boss of a stray cat-gang (?) called Nekonaki, and even though they talk and act like hoodlums, they have their own rules and codes. One day, Ryuusei comes into the picture and he beats Taiga down, just for his own survival, though he only came into the new town to find a calico male cat with a scar on his face.

Now, like I said, this is top shit comedy and I love how Taiga and Ryuu begin as enemies but end up as friends who kick ass together. Also, I really appreciate that characters do look different from each other not only when they ‘appear as humans’, but also as cats. They’re really fucking cute and hilarious, I’m telling you.

What can I say? If you’re a cat lover, you MUST read this.

My wife and I bought this volume for a friend because of her love of cats. After she read it she bought the following two volumes and gave a lot of praise. I had to see what all the fuss was about so I asked to borrow them and coming from a non-cat fan this...was pretty fun!

Basically it's the life of cats but in street gang type world. Think Wolf Rain but not so serious or depressing. So when our main character, Ryuusei, shows up in a new town he's not so welcomed. A adventure of fighting street gangs, finding a new family, and trying to get laid. Ryuusei is a cat in a world filled with dangers!

It's a pretty funny serious. Lots of good comedic moments, the fights are intense, and I like Ryuusei. The art is solid and the world building works. The sexual fan-service and such can be a bit much and watching Ryuusei wanting to basically fuck the shit out of the one female character is a bit much but he is a cat, and that's just how animals are.

Overall interesting and will read on. A 3.5 out of 5.

Another book I picked from the library shelf without knowing a single thing about it beyond the front cover. So when I hit page 7 and understood the conceit of the series -- -- I laughed my head off and just reveled in the ridiculousness of the rest of the book.

Alas, my joy was undercut by fan service upskirt shots and sequences of sexual harassment and sexual assault by the protagonist.

Hilarious and totally out there premise with a good flavor of characters. Story is kinda simple but doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it at all. This manga literally combines my two favorite things, cats and the Japanese delinquent trope 👍👍

This series stars a bunch of stray cats who are usually depicted as tough human thugs and gang members. Ryuusei is a newcomer in Nekonaki, the territory ruled by Taiga and his gang. He doesn't always think before getting into fights, but he's tough and has the scars to prove it. Taiga and the others think he might be looking to steal some territory, but in reality the only thing he's interested in is finding a mysterious calico tom with a scarred eye. There's a chance that the cat Ryuusei wants to find is the new leader of the Goblin Cat Tails, but in order to meet him he'll first have to fight his way through a bunch of cats trying to create a cat utopia.

The main reason I got this was because of the cats. And also, the "cats depicted as people" aspect reminded me a little of Hatoful Boyfriend (although I suppose that was "birds briefly depicted as people"). Based on what I've seen of the cat politics around my apartment building, depicting cats as thugs duking it out for pieces of territory seemed like something that would work well.

The art was decent: nice clean lines, cats that were usually drawn well (the legs were occasionally weird), and easy-to-follow action. I liked the way Okada worked aspects of each cats' fur pattern into their clothing design. For example, Taiga, an orange tabby, wore a jacket with tabby stripes on it. Design-wise, Madara was my favorite, both in his human and cat versions. As a cat, he was a tortoiseshell (which would probably be hell to draw consistently if Madara became a regular character). In his human form, his tortoiseshell pattern became a coat with a camo pattern.

The humor was so-so. A few crass moments, like when Ryuusei tried to hit on Mii, or when a panel focused on Ryuusei's jiggling feline balls (so many cat testicles in this). There was also the bit with Ryuusei and the box. Honestly, it's amazing he's survived this long.

The whole "cats depicted as people" thing seemed a little inconsistent. It wasn't quite that these were cats sometimes shown as people but still 100% cats - Okada occasionally drew them in poses that weren't natural for cats but were natural for their human depictions. But behavior-wise, they also weren't just cats with people's minds. It was a bit weird.

Unfortunately, the characters and story didn't capture my attention at all. The characters did a lot of shouting and posturing but didn't otherwise stand out much. The one moment Ryuusei really stood out, for example, was when he demonstrated a willingness to show his belly to humans in order to charm them into giving him food. Otherwise, though, he was mostly Main Tough Guy Who Shouts a Lot and Is Occasionally Silly. Taiga was Leader Tough Guy Who Shouts a Lot. Then there was Kinbi and Ginbi, aka Tough Villain Guys With Dreadlocks Who Shout a Lot. And Mii was The Girl. I assume this world has more than one female cat in it, but you wouldn't know it from what you saw in this volume. I liked that it was noted that the volume's male calico and tortoiseshell were both rare, but it would have been nice to see more female characters.

It was a little confusing, but it sounded like the male calico Ryuusei was looking for was maybe someone he looked up to at some point. Other than that, I have no idea why finding this particular cat was so important to him. I also don't know that I care enough to buy any more of this, although there's a possibility I might check out a library copy of the next volume one day.

Extras:

A page of translator's notes, which for some reason is included just before the final chapter in the volume, and a couple full-color illustrations.

A missed opportunity: the volume was peppered with cat-related terms that readers might not necessarily know, like clowder and molly, so a page devoted to those might have been a good idea.

This was hilarious. Love the idea of street cats portrayed by humans. Such a fun read and I'm definitely gonna pick up the next volume.

Edit: Rereading because I'm finally gonna continue this series :)

"Sure are a lot of cats fighting today."

"They're so cute even when they fight."
Well, I wasn't expecting a closeup of (erect?) cat genitals (or the most contrived poses ever to show panty shots), but this is where we are in the world.

This is about gangster cats, but they are portrayed as humans. Sometimes, I thought the flip-flopping from human to cat was a bit distracting. But other times it's really cute like when Ryuusei was stuck inside the cardboard box.
"Living free is why I'm on the street!"
I don't feel attached to Ryuusei, the main character. I just see him as a creepy, cliche hotheaded shounen hero. Y'know the "ask questions later" type. I usually don't mind that trope (I've read a bunch of manga/seen animes, so I'm not too burnt out), but these characters aren't interesting enough that I want to read the next volume.

Still, you might think differently, so read for yourself. Of course, there are cute cats too.

Simple, but well-observed, featuring some great cross-cutting between showing cats as backstreet gangs, and backstreet gangs as cats. Added bonus of some good cat artwork and additional, squeeingly clueless humans who can only see the cute li’l floofs

A cute little manga about street cats depicted as yakuza gangs. A little disappointing, in that the plot's pretty thin, and they more often act like yakuza who are occasionally drawn as cats -- most notably, there's only one woman, and she's the tiny token girlfriend rather than being the one who runs things while the boys hiss and swipe at each other. (My experience with barn cats has been that the ladies form a group together, with the boys being accepted or wandering off based on how well they can behave in the existing order.) Also, none of them are cuddly enough together; I really wanted to see yakuza grooming each other. So yeah, right now I probably won't buy the second volume, but I'll at least take a look at it when it comes out -- who knows, maybe they'll introduce a girl gang and redeem themselves.

I am not a strong graphic novel reader, let alone Manga, but this was really good! Loved the whole cat perspective and felt very West Side Story in a good way. It was nominated for a fourteen and up reading group I'm in, but to me it reads a bit more adult.

I appreciate the idea behind this 10000%, but the comedy ran out after chapter 1. The art is beautiful, but the action is boring, and there's not much to keep me coming back other than, you know, CATS. The one female cat is framed as an object when in the human panels.

Ryuusei is searching for someone, a man with a scar over his eye. He will fight all who stand in his way to survive until he finds that man, from rival gangs to small time hoodlums. Even if it means getting involved in gang wars.

Oh, and they're all cats by the way. Every single character.

This is a manga with its tongue planted firmly in its cheek. It acts as if it's taking itself seriously, raising the stakes and following a fairly conventional warring gangs story line, but then it undercuts it entirely because cats.

There will be a super serious scene one panel, and then in the next, it's reinterpreted with cats. One panel, they're throwing fists and in the next, two cats are swatting at each other. The gang will be running to save the molly Mii, but along the way, they'll get distracted by a lizard scuttling by or food.

Heck, Ryuusei gets himself stuck in a cardboard box. You are treated to a panel each of a rough-and-tumble cat squeezed into a box looking quite content and of a scary man doing exactly the same.

This is among the goofier manga I have read, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. It makes me think of all the other stories out there that could benefit from the cat treatment. I would love to read a cat version of Romeo and Juliet (or would it be Romeow?). How about Wizard of Pawz with a ruby collar? There are just so many options for stories told with cats.

I will warn you that this is not your typical cat manga if the synopsis I gave above did not make that clear. This cat manga has some adult content. It's ultimately a story about street gangs and so has a lot of fighting and some very intact tom cats. Chi's Sweet Home this is not. The first chapter will give you a pretty good idea of if this manga is for you.

I actually really enjoyed this work! It’s not among the best first volumes I’ve read but it was funny, entertaining and had a good pacing. I wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did.

The characters are, so far, very entertaining and likable. The cliffhanger at the end was a great way to get readers to continue on reading (without being too cheesy). I believe I’ll give this manga another volume!

Overall it wasn’t an above average read, but it was definitely a really entertaining read that I don’t regret picking up.

The best aspect however was definitely the art itself. Oftentimes, fight scenes in manga can be really confusing and drawn in a way that you don’t really understand what’s going on, but this manga had none of that and was very clear with the fight scenes, which made me like them a lot. The style of the art itself is also very nice and fits the theme of this manga perfectly, not to mention that the “human forms” of the cats fit them very well.

If you like your cats then this manga is definitely for you!

It’s not easy being a street thug—er, street cat!

Getting into fights, protecting your territory, finding the best grub spots—it’s all hard work.

When Ryuusei wanders into Nekonaki town on his search for a male calico with a scarred eye, he finds himself smack in the middle of a tense territory dispute between two rival cat gangs. His presence is only making tensions worse.

But, could this battle-worn brawler with a heart of gold have what it takes to turn the tides in this catty dispute?

OMG I absolutely love this silly little series so far!

This story is so wildly beyond what I expected and it’s so delightful! I appreciate stories that are doing experimental things and this one is certainly playing around with perspective and style. Plus, I just really enjoy stories that play around with stereotypes.

At its heart, this story is lighthearted and so wholesome. Especially for cat lovers, I think you’ll enjoy the funfocus of this story. But, also, fans of more shonen type stories may enjoy the action sequences in this one.

Definitely recommend~

A story of street cats switching between seeing them as cats and as human street-gang thugs (think Wolf's Rain but with a more light, silly bent) - rival stray cat gangs fighting for territory, individuals trying to get food and get girls.
The one major turn-off for me was the way the one female character is used for blatant horny fanservice (wearing a skirt so short you can see the bottom of her butt-cheeks when standing, and at one point the male lead actually squats down to look up at her crotch - okay they're cats, but did we REALY need to see that acted out in human-form? ...sit down & shush, horny fanboys -_-)
Take that part out, and it's an okay enjoyable story, with the new cat in town searching for a strange tomcat for some unknown reason rooted in his mysterious past, causing him to butt heads with the local boss-cat in comical ways, until a rival gang makes a move on the territory.
I'm not fangirling over this one, but I might pick up the second volume out of curiosity to see what direction it takes.

I LOVE the concept of this story. Street cats as hoodlums? I love it. I also love that we get to see the characters depicted as both human AND cat throughout the story. The more I read it the more I loved it and couldn't put it down. I will say the one thing I really didn't like in this was the dialogue. The story and illustrations were so good and I feel like the dialogue was cliche/corny and brought the story down a notch.

Disclaimer, I did receive a free copy of this book. And I'm super glad I did because I now have an awesome cat manga to add to my list. For real for real, the cat depictions and characters and story are so so great. I'm hoping the dialogue gets better but even if it doesn't this is still worth the read. Badass cats fighting each other??? Yes please.

Received a copy through First Reads.

This manga is about street cats and their fighting for their turf, their rules. On the cover is the main cat Ryuusei who is passing through Nekonaki town looking for a former cat boss. He crosses paths and claws with the clowder, which is what a cat gang is called here (and I recently learned this is an actual word for a group of cats), of the local and neighboring town. I won't tell all about the volume.
Definitely read it if you like cats and delinquents. if you like a story that you don't have to take too seriously. You'll learn cat facts while being entertained like male calicos and turtles are rare. When the cats are fighting or just shown in cat form I think they look so cute. I liked seeing the Nyankees drawn in cat and human forms. Don't really care for the cat genitalia or close up shot of underwear, but I can overlook it since it would not be the first manga to be guilty of the latter and the former is a bit surprising since most drawings/cartoons leave that out, but that is how animals look in real life (my young nephew even asked why animals in cartoons don't have their privates drawn in lol. ahem moving on).
Ryuusei seems like a good guy and I will be reading more of Nyankees to see what happens next.
